The picture of a young Lennox and Mike just goes to show they were both destined for greatness. They could both have had that picture taken with so many other fighters who have long fell by the wayside or simply didn’t make the grade.
He didn't fight Mike in his prime but let me tell you Mike did a solid job against him. Lennox used great strategy to beat Mike. When Mike would hit him hard he would lean on Mike with his size and weight then wrap him up. Mike fought a good fight. Lennox is great at strategy. It definitely would be different with a younger Tyson because his defense and movement was way sharper in the 80s to early 90s.
@@CenkHoca Lennox Lewis himself said that Tyson was a early bloomer and he himself was better later on. He also said that he was older than Tyson when he became a professional. @@BazIrvine Nothing to do with age, but motivation & self discipline. Tyson's only opponent in life, & especially in boxing, has only ever been himself. He was lost as a child, & lost for most of his adulthood. When Cus was alive, Mike briefly felt that he was worth something, & felt the approval from Cus that was worth fighting & winning for. The Jesuits have had a saying for hundreds of years. 'Show me a boy of 7, & I will show you the man.' Self worth is instilled early in life, & people have spent entire lifetimes trying to rise from the ashes of their childhood years.
@Cryer24597 Coulda, woulda, shoulda. We can all speculate about what COULD have happened, - but none of us, not even the boxing professionals, know what WOULD have happened. You could just as easily speculate, - who did Ali ever meet who was remotely the equal of a prime 19 - 21 year old Tyson? Frazier came closest in size, work rate & style, & Frazier believed rightly or wrongly that he won all 3 fights, & floored Ali in one. & Frazier was completely blind in one eye in all 3 fights. In style, speed, knockout punch in both hands, Tyson could have won easily. But that doesn't mean that he WOULD have won, because Ali had far more heart, & didn't become frustrated & disheartened when he couldn't knock his opponent out. Same with Lewis & Holyfield. Tyson absolutely had the power, speed, & defense to have destroyed both in his prime skill years. That still doesn't mean that he WOULD have. Lewis, Holyfield & Ali, all had a measured, calm skilled style that gets better with age & wisdom. Tyson, on the other hand, because he was only 5'11" at best & 15 & a half stone, had to rely on Frazier's style of speed, defense, body movement, & multi punch complex combinations, with a very aggressive high work rate. This only suits youth & hyper fitness, along with highly disciplined training. Lose any one of those aspects, & Tyson becomes vulnerable to 6'5"" big hitters & shrewd defenders. As we saw in the Douglas fight, looking for single shots instead of combinations, & a very low work rate, simply didn't work for an undisciplined, complacent, lazy Tyson, & he paid the price against a man he should have beaten inside the first round. But Douglas, as Mike acknowledged, trained specifically & fought the best fight of his entire career. For Douglas, they met at precisely the right time in their careers. Douglas in the ascendant of his career, Tyson spiralling downwards out of control. & that is my point here. Early on, Lewis lost against Tyson when they were both young, but Tyson lost to Lewis & Holyfield later in his career, when he had lost skill, speed, & combinations, & they had gained in experience & defense. Everyone has a moment in time when they are the best they are ever going to be. Tyson's came early, Lewis, & Holyfield's came late career.
@Cryer24597 If you watch back all Tyson's victories, you notice that not one of his knockout victories was a straight arms length punch. Every single one was either a right or left hook, or an upper cut. He was the little guy against every single one of his opponents, which meant that they all had a considerable reach advantage over him. This means that straight punching at distance made him extremely vulnerable to long ranged big hitters! He HAD to get inside & up close where his opponents reach held no advantage. That requires a very elusive quick moving defense, an extremely forward aggressive high work rate, & multiple punch combinations to work the body to bring the hands down to leave the head open. A low work rate & just waiting for an opening for a single punch to the head would only work for a very tall long reach big straight hitter like Wilder, or Lewis. For a little guy like Tyson or Frazier, it would be catastrophic. & it was, as we saw before the Douglas fight even happened. Tyson was becoming lazy & complacent 3 fights before the Douglas farce.
marek falk Tyson still has his boxing ability when fighting Lewis tbh he looked more bigger in fat when he was younger he was jacked asf I feel he was faster

Lennox is the most underrated boxer of all time. I was in college when he was the champ, for some reason in the US everyone bet against him, but not me. Dude made me a small fortune (for a college kid which is like $800).
I grew up in Canada watching Lewis and when he fought Tyson I was in Australia. The fight was at 6am but the pubs in the casino were open. It was madness. The guy beside me said he put $600 on Tyson and it was the easiest money he was ever going to make. I told him he was nuts and Lewis would destroy him. The guy was so devastated when he lost.
Lennox was always likeable, class, intelligent, and well spoken. Salute to you Lennox.

I agree...but a win is a win....I think lewis ...Holyfield always relied on skill and Discipline where Tyson lost those after he lost Cus...relied on power and strength which wont get you far in Professional Boxing.
The amount of pain that Mike Tyson went through gives me chills

AeroClasher if you think Tyson was faster when he fough Lewis than when he was in his 20’s... I don’t know what to tell you.
who knew russell was such fighting buff
He has spoken about it in his shows several times.
he needs to learn to stop interupting
@@AGCcachanilla exactly my thoughts. correcting lenox lewis on facts about lenox's own life.
shut the fk off.
@Vantum Noir lmao.. damn, you got triggered bad. didn't know you were in love with Russell. didn't mean to offend your religion.
but you're an idiot if you don't recognize how annoying he is here. while you watched this for russell, everyone watched for lenox and Russell's encyclopedia interruption was fkin annoying.
He said Tyson lost in January 1989, not true it was Feb 1990 against Douglas.
My Respect for Lennox.
Greetings from Durango Mexico 🇲🇽
What a great interview. Class act for sure. So calm and level headed
Am I the only one to think Mike's vocabulary was great! I thought he was witty and smart yet honest in his response.
He is a genius... People don't want to admit it.
The things that defeated Tyson were Don King, Robin Given, and all the entertainment sideshows that come with boxing. These elements used him and abused him more than any of his in-ring opponents ever did. Glad he found a better way today.
Glad he never beat anyone to death😐
Douglas, Lewis Holyfield all beat than ass too
How bout the rape charge? You dumbass
Spoken like a TRUE boxing historian. Exactly bro he was beaten outside of ring NEVER in it! And I can name many fighters called the Greatest of All time who were beaten inside ring & given credit for victories they never had??? 🙈
@@rivafussball6719 mike tyson is given credit for victories he never had, like holmes as if holmes was something in the late 80s, against holyfield in his "prime" but he ran from holyfield saying that he had rib injury, lennox wich he ran from in 1996 and any other fighter that people say "oh mike tyson would have beaten him if it wasnt for that and for that" stop making excuses mike tyson's downfall is his own fault.
I never really liked Lewis until I saw this, Lennox is a wise man. Young men need to listen to older men. That's what is missing, you can't buy it, you can't sell it.... it's natural, and the young people need it now more than ever!
Tyson was never the same after Cus passed away. Nobody could ever get to him like that again and gain his trust.
I knew Lennox was a bad man when Bowe three the belts in the trash and retired. What a great time in boxing. We had Mike, Evander, Bowe, Bruno, Big George Foreman come out of retirement, Tommy the Duke Morrison and more. Now the heavyweight division is getting back to it again and I love it. Congratulations to Andy Ruiz Jr. That was an eye opener for me.
