One of the best British made films ever. If I may quote Granpa Simpson, talking about Casablanca. "I've seen this movie countless times. And I never get tired of that ending". And this has to be the best intripretation of Jerusalem I have ever herd.
I ran into a former college track teammate of mine, he ran the 400, I, the 100/200. A few of our colleagues are dead, some we haven't heard from in years. When he left, I thought of this song, and scene, how we were once the age of the movie characters, strong, energetic and damn fast. When I am old and decrepit, I will remember this one chance meeting, and this movie....
I'm not a religious person but I love this hymn so much that I would spend hours at the church just to listen to it. I like a lot how in the soundtrack by Vangelis, "100 metres" and "Jerusalem" are joined. The ominous (yet beautiful) theme of "100 metres" then transitions into this wonderful hymn. Blessed be England 😘
This is my best film from all. This last scene is a remembrance of what should be our last minutes in live, when we all are doing a final run to eternity.
My dad showed me this film as a child, and it has stuck with me since, only getting more beautiful with time. If I ever have kids, they'll need to see it too.
Isaiah 40.31-for those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; the shall mount up with wings as eagles ; they shall run and not be weary and they shall walk and not be faint. I was saved with this verse in 1984. Praise the Lord Jesus
im from Italy i think is one of the best British made films ever :) i watched 1st time at age of 7 and still watch now still feeling true deep good emotions :)
Eric Liddell was a true hero of the faith. Watch the pureflix cartoon (the torchlighters series) on him. Yes its a cartoon, but in half an hour gives much of his life. He was Christ first
He was truly an angel among us. The first hand accounts of how he led those young people in the internment camp to Christ and the spirit of forgiveness, which got them through it.
Thank you for uploading this! I prefer this version of "Jerusalem" over the one on the CD soundtrack. I wish they wouldn't change versions when they go from movie to soundtrack.
I love the symbolism of this. Both the Jewish athlete and the Christian athlete believe in the Chariot of Fire miracle of Elijah..... Perfect Hymn to pick to make this clear.
The locomotive is livery green... which I believe means British Rail. I'd look to Britains National Railway Museum for an answer. It's a beautiful train, isn't it?
@Songsmirth i guess you're asking for the name of that tune near the end of the movie right before they do the main theme. the tune is "jerusalem". it's used in a bunch of things dealing with england. i like the tune, and yet the lyrics are kind of odd. it's based on a legend in which Christ was in england back during Christ's earthly life. the poem encourages people to make england like jerusalem was. before i saw the lyrics, i often wondered why the tune isn't much used here in the u.s.
@xy47402 This version is beautiful. I expected it to be in the CD but what I heard was pretty standard. In the movie we hear, as they begin "Bring me my bow of burning gold...", the men sing the standard arrangement while the boys' choir sings a -what?- counter harmony. I don't know the language of music, but the movie, alone, may hold this arrangement.
@@willnichlas6317 That high-note harmony of a hymn is usually called a descant. And I agree, I would have loved to have that version of the song on soundtrack. Ah, well.
As luck would have it, I'm reading about another Liddle - Rod Liddle's column in The Sun newspaper (Thursday 11th July) On a more serious note, in the summer of 1990, I shared a house owned by a 25-year-old female who worked in London during the week. She was the PA to Lord Puttnam.
@ElThain69 If you find out please let me know! I have been trying to find this harmonised version for a long time. It is not the version on the soundtrack album.

I can't watch this scene without crying. The music is simply so powerful.
DisasterOnline me too friend😢😭
Beautiful movie. I saw it as a teenager in the 80s and always have remembered it with deep emotion.
I am not an Englishman, but listening to this Oh, Lord what a beautiful song to draw inspiration from!

lucky you old boy!

The last 15 minutes of this film is among the most moving I've seen. I named one of my sons Eric partially from this film.

Play this song at my funeral 😭
The Descant & Harmonies on the 2nd verse make all the difference over other versions as it gets more power at the end.

The best sports movie of all time!
I love the way "Jerusalem" segues into the theme song in this film.
The last 15 minutes of this movie, and the last about 15 minutes of "Backdraft" sure send you through a variety of emotions.
when I watch this, all time stands still. absolutely timeless.
England when we was a proud country
It makes me think of my grandmother whom lived around the time the story really happened
best ending ever to a movie or song wow
I cry when I watch this 😭
Till we have built Jerusalem, in England's green and pleasant land...
ERIC LIDELL, Missionary, died in occupied China at the end of WW11. All of Scotland mourned.
Which of you men has 100 sheep and leaves 99 in the wilderness to save the 1?
Every soul matters.
I love this four-voice version... it's agreat arrangement, even if Parry never arranged it as such.
All glory to God.
It makes me shiver!!
William Blake brought us here...

You are by no means the only one.
+Paul Nattress Well Old boy..you are not by any means alone for sure as this shores shall remain free!
+datCubanGuy Life is what you make off!...life is what we make of this Life!
I'm afraid I'll never be able to watch that scene on the beach again without imagining Mr. Bean (Rowen Atkinson) in there as well.
I love the symbolism of this. Both the Jewish athlete and the Christian athlete believe in the Chariot of Fire miracle of Elijah.....

Tout simplement splendide !!

Great Movie!
what a great ending...
beautiful, charming, nice. i like the music very much
The irony, of course, being that Harry was "of the tribe."
Brilliant stuff.
England at its best!
Frederick, William--well said gentlemen, well said...
Ineffable.

We were soldiers once, and young....
and so was I!
This segment contains one of the best versions of the hymn "Jerusalem" that I've ever heard. Who sings it?

The boys in the film. It was recorded by the same choir....

well spoken!!

This is the only place where I have heard a descant on the second verse (at 1:20)
I love it!
@uncd2000 Descant. Thank you for a new word. If it's what I think it is I may report back.
@jizydorczak Thanks a lot for the info. I'll keep searching for the Ambrosian Singers and see if I can find it.
I like the sign in the upper left: 33
Yes, but.... "He is and Englishman." There was a lot of meaning behind that particular scene.
@taragruber22 I quite agree!
this is different form the album version. anyone have this version?
@savvyscottyboy Have you seen Secretariat? The music is not as good, but I think it would also qualify as a family friendly feel good movie.
Years ago, I've seen this film, but I don't remember the German title.
is this SnT Paul Church?
too small
not a big fan of this movie generally.....but this scene is propper good
"We ran them off their feet!"
Wrong. He said "He ran them off their feet"
