Sold out in the UK already, nice work Hibbert
Just bought mine through the US link! Can't wait to put all kind of wild automations in my husband's zones without him knowing 🤣
Love this product they sold out a few times in the US. Got a few of these in my house now.
Another great episode, sir!! I managed to get one a couple of months ago and have it in our kitchen to trigger the separate lights in there at either end.
Couple of things though:
Firstly is the firmware upgrade to 1.1.7_0002 was the biggest mistake I’ve made 😂 I constantly have ghosts everywhere, and have to constantly reset the absence status. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 that Aqara will bring out the next upgrade soon as this one has been out about a month or so now.
Secondly, I wasn’t been able to get the light sensor to show in Alexa when I set it up, to be able to trigger the lights only coming on when the lux levels are low and had to resort to just setting them to come on between certain times of day. We’re your routines created in Alexa or HA for the lux levels?
Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Hi Paul, sounds like a tremendous addition to any smart home! Although it is implicit in this being a presence sensor, I do think you should point another advantage: being a presence sensor rather than a movement sensor it will remain triggered also when I am reading a book, or watching TV!
This was the reason I cannot use motion sensors in areas wehre I do not sit still for a while, this thing would also work properly in my living room and bedroom!
But is for switching the heating with such sensors: I suppose you can - provided you do not mind getting back to a room and discover it being bloody cold. Light triggers immediately, heating does not. If the kettle is switched off, it would be hours before your room is heated properly again.
That was the best use of "It just woooooooooorks!" in ages! 🤣
It just werrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrks! ❤️
What a great bit of kit.
A waterproof outdoor version would be good. You could set up zones so the lights outside your house get brighter when somebody gets closer!
I love that!!
Yeah, lots of external possibilities to explore.
Perhaps the aqara sensor could be housed in a plastic watertight housing? I'm guessing that plastic in front of it wouldn't affect the sensor as it is microwave?
Dispensing with infrared pir's would be genius and most welcomed as presumably there would be considerably less if not no false alarms.
I wonder what effect wind or rain would have?
Maybe a good project for Mr Hibbert ?
Outdoor cameras are pretty good for zone detections and recognising people and animals. Perhaps they could use with extra features, but biggest caveat is the price.
FP2 early adopter here with a word of caution. Aqara can be absolute derps with firmware! They all but bricked some people's FP2s in May and it took them until THIS WEEK to release a fix. My sensor was unable to show anyone in live view and thus, was a glorified paperweight for over a month. That wasn't very cool.
What fix? I have no fix
@@Chesterflaps The latest app update they pushed a few days ago fixed it for me
This thing is bloody fantastic!!! You've sold me, Paul!
As have you and everyone else I pay attention to, I have been quite intrigued by the FP2. I've got just the use case you mentioned (two people, separate desks) and I'm looking forward to getting that automation working.
"Works locally and without a need for a bridge": Well done, Aqara. Well done indeed. All you folks that require a bridge, pay attention.
Directly advertising the zone presences and light sensor: This is the kind of thing that makes those of us who actually program Home Automation sigh in relief because, as you say, it's almost unprecedented. I can hope it's the start of a trend.
Mains powered: Agreed. I dislike changing batteries. As much as I dislike cords hanging off things, I like changing batteries less.
Doesn't work with Matter: Odd. I can't think of why one would bring out a device these days without Matter integration. Not a problem for me (being one of those Home Assistant, using HomeKit without any iThings) but I can see this could be an issue.
80 quid ($82.99): Yes, it's a bit steep except that the zone functionality can do the work of many individual devices. It would pose a limit on such things as "just getting one for fall sensing and another for zone sensing."
Great review as always with all kinds of data I can use. Thanks.
My main exercise these is doing hip thrusts whenever Paul mentions Home Assistant! Home Assistant!
*Humps the air in perfect unison.
I have 6 of the FP2s and they all have issues with ghosting, where multiple people show up when only one is in the room. Also many times when no one is present. I've done all the smart calibration stuff, no dice. No fans or weird equipment to trip them up in most scenarios.
They're not quite ready for mainstream.
Same here , the ghosting issues are a real pain in the .. hope a update will fix it
@@leonsneeuw3865 some people argued that I should not update the firmware but I tried both versions with similar results. When it works, it's neat, but all these possibly-'sponsored' videos don't talk about the long term pain points.
Same here, lots of ghosting issues. This sensor was a waste of money.
@@ankitduseja1856 it's pretty much garbage yeah
Bro you have ghosts in your house
One small annoyance is the missing ability to rotate the map in Aqara's app so the device can be installed in a corner, say between living and dining room areas that meet up at the corner of the house. Apparently there was mention of this feature coming on their website a while back, but it was removed.
LoL... Sometimes I call my dog "boo-boo"... So when I come home and say "hey boo-boo!" My Google says, "hi Rob. How are you today?" 🤣🤣🤣
another great video. Do enjoy your presentation. I saw these after Smart Home Solver reviewed and grabbed two of them. Having used for a few months now I can confirm these things are awesome. Working with an electrician to ceiling mount some in bathrooms for fall detection. Highly recommend
This instantly replaces the motion sensors I have on my stairs. Wish I'd had access to this a few years ago.
Happy Saturday Paul. Thanks.
Thanks for another awesome video. I got this before launch and it was a huge disappointment at first as I had issues with ghosting and my lanky grey cat would trigger it all the time. Including tuning the tv on at 5am. Or as I would be cooking my kitchen lights would switch off as it thinks I’m not here but I am!
I then paired my HomeKit routines /automations with a bunch of homebridge virtual switch so I had a bit more fine control. Ie if cooking switch on on and no presence detected, after I had entered the zone to do nothing
Glad you made this video, I needed one last push to buy a few. Thanks
You are a strange strange little man. And I'm here for it. Found you yesterday and subbed immediately 😂
Love your personality man keep the content coming…. 😂😂😂
I want honesty here...who else thought that the pan-down shot of the Aqara senor was Paul's bald head? Just for a second my brain wondered what the square was on his head. Lmao, I'm getting old.
Sounds amazing! Would this work if housed in a plastic bag for waterproofing and installed in an open air area? Like a balcony or roof top? Cheers!
Ooooh, this is gonna fix my “stumbling through the dark” issues without leaving lights on!
Cheers Paul happy Saturday. Love the FP2 but they are hard to get hold of.
Fantastic video Paul - I'm proud to be a patreon 😁👍😁.
Another excellent entertaining and informative presentation. I look forward to every single one a lot and TBH, most times I just don't get UK type humor. You I can understand just fine. On an unrelated subject, many are also shifting to Rumble since YT has been messing with their presentations.
I like these presence sensors but are they only a series circuit or can they work in parallel with traditional controls? Do they need to be removed and the device plugged in directly in case the sensor fails in other words for those who don't understand?
I do miss the bait and fish slapping humor but you are still pretty funny so I'll continue watching.
great video! just bought it and I can't wait to install it on my Home Assistant, thanks :D
By the way... where did you buy the amazing posters that you have on the wall ? thanks again! ;)
I will use it also as Alarm detection, far better than standard alarm motion sensors. A whole new level of security
I have40+ devices with aqara and my cat triggers the alarm on this when using presence detected on co2 as trigger. and since then have a eve shortcut that sync the alarms on aqara homehub and my HomePods to play an alarm on the HomePods and switch all lights red
It's useful and amusing
Great review, triggered impulse buying and I get it the same day!
Please make use of your return policy.
The current batch on sale, has been semi bricked by a shit firmware update, that Aqara have said they'll address at some unknown point in the future. No time frames given.
Currently, ALL Reddit threads on the FP2, are about them being non usable.
I just received mine today, will be using them for fall detection since I have ALS/MND. Now, I just need to get someone to mount them to the ceiling for me.
"I Sense Something....a Presence.....One I've not Felt since...."
This is great. Although I would of preferred a rechargeable option.
Finally something innovative
we all look forward to Paul's words of wisdome. This product realy looks interesting.
Stu really should have had a Paul mask on that doll!
Unfortunately I've had a lot of trouble with mine. Multiple ghosts. I have found that mostly its leaving a zone that sometimes it will leave ghosts and not only going out of the sensor view and when I had a guest it was just got ridiculous. I have had to reset the absence status at least once per day. I have another but with how much one gives me trouble I don't even want to set the other up
Try adjusting the sensitivity in the settings and make sure it's firmware is up to date, and most importantly, once you've adjusted the settings reset the absence status. I had a ghost or two, but doing those three things got rid of the ghosts entirely. I had to try different sensitivity to get it to work, and I think I landed on the lowest setting in the end, but it works perfectly now!
It’s been out of stock for 2 months on Amazon now, seems to have the same availability struggles as the FP1. It’s a real bummer seeing all of these reviews and no availability.
@@ToniHintonnot any more they don’t lol.
@@davidrunacres Amazon app says they are. They appear to have a stash in a warehouse in Texas somewhere because it says I just missed the window to have it delivered tomorrow.
I just looked up my order from May and see they're currently in stock and available for delivery (for me) tomorrow morning. (In the US)
Hey Paul, Love watching your videos. Have you managed to get your hands on Aqara's smart door lock as yet? I might have missed it if you do. Thats something I would be very interested in seeing a review on. Especially the HA integration side of it? Greetings from Sunny South Africa!
Nice vid as always. Does anyone have a link to step by steps for setting up the scenes and automations, i want to give one to my inlaws and want my spare daughter to be able to set it up for them.
The FP2 is an amazing upgrade over the the first FP1 version. Aqara have just made leaps and bounds in millimetre wave technology.
I can't help but wonder what they might come up with next. The mains powered is good and bad. Sometimes it can be hard to put the sensor where you need to and hide the power cord going to it, but I can't think of any other device that does what the FP2 does. What is the delay between entering a zone and it triggering? Sorry if I missed it in the video.
Zero delay. If you watch me move to Neeshas desk in the first part of the video you'll see I don't even get to sit down before it triggers, I was kind of waiting to react in a comical way and it genuinely caught me off guard before I got chance because it reacted faster than I could possibly expect, and that's using a cloud connection to an Amazon routine!!
@@paulhibbert That is good to know. The original FP1 did have some delay. Thanks for answering :)
dude YES, you could review the universal remotes id still watch.... It Just Works!!!
Not available to buy in the Uk. Sold out. Thanks Paul
Does it still work in Home Assistant with the Homekit integration if your internet goes down?
4:00 APPEASE THE ALGORITHMS!
I just got one on a prime day deal to use in a similar way to you
thinking it wouldn't pick up my cats...if they're on the floor it doesn't but the second they jump on the sofa or there cat tree it sees them as people. It's so annoying because the sofa was a huge part of my routine planning. Of course my misses thinks it's great that she knows Luna is sat fast asleep on her side of the sofa all day but I can't setup any routines involving the sofa or the cats going to trigger them. They need to get it to work out what's a person and what's a tiny little cat having a kip.
Sadly I'm sending mine back to Amazon... I'd love to say this works well... But if I brush past my tall plants, all of a sudden another human presence is detected. They are in an interference zone, but this makes no difference. I'm also detected in the doorway after leaving the room. Both off these issues stay for at least 5mins after which no detection... Nice idea... But only practical for a reasonably sterile room!
I guess this is an older video .. not so NOT greedy .. aqara now is adding features that are temporary, showing they are working towards a subscription so I guess the high price isn't enough. It worries me that they may decide to make the zone presence behind a paywall. The issue with ghosts is not with detection its with after detection. My kitchen has one of these sensors and I constantly have to go into the app and "ai train" it for the room to get the overhead light to shut off. It works well to turn the light on but it doesn't turn off because it seems to "keep" a presence in the room. I may have to try to reset the kitchen sensor because this is about 90% of the time and I actually decided to make a switch to turn off the automation. The presence sensor is not 100% on detecting presence if you aren't moving as it is advertised. I cant use it for my nightly routine because it will trigger the morning routine several times during the night because the bedroom sensor thinks I left the "bed" zone. I think the longest time it kept me "in bed" was 3 hours then there would be a clear for some amount of minutes and then the presence is detected again. Aqara says they are working on position sensing to identify if a person is lying down, sitting or standing but that will probably be a monthly pay to have that since they did add sleep monitoring (which I'm assuming works like crap due to the fact it cant even accurately tell that a person is still in an area) and that is listed as "limited free". I have 4 of these sensors because I thought they were going to be great but am now worried because it seems like they are too busy trying to make subscription based service and not fixing the bugs in the already overpriced product
Nice. Have you looked at espresense for a more diy type experience, or even Lewis' sensor?
Lewis said he would send me one, but I think he ran out! 😮 His sensor must be amazing!!
These have such great potential, the reports of ghosting do haunt me a little though
That looks cool. Does it only work in one room or can it see through walls (or indeed floors)?
The floor plan of my 3-bed house is probably smaller than that guy’s lounge, but it’s not open plan. Of course it would be nice to cover both upstairs and downstairs with as few sensors as possible, too!
P.S. I’ve already seen the comments saying that the current FW has problems. I don’t need telling again! 😉
My dear good sir you have now gone from my favourite smart home youtuber to just purely a god for your looking into its pet capabilities, you could say your have become my Tom Baker of tech. If I was not on UC I would buy you not one but a nights worth of beer :)
Would it be possible to program so many zones in a DIY mm wave sensor connected to an ESP32 and HA? And maybe detecting more than one person?
Can the FP2 be used with the Aqara E1 hub ?
So, Paul, how would one go about on a budget setting up a no internet required or CLOUD system for lights today? (about 7 lights and fans. PC toggling would be cool too)
I have Sengled wifi bulbs now and Alexa that is useless in outages. Also "invested BIGLY" years ago into INSTEON and all those devices died just after limited warrantee expired. So, yeah learning the hard way is a skill of itself.
Thank you for any attention and time you can spare.
Tuya zigbee, alexa & google, a second hand Hubitat Cx and either a fingerbot or enabling voice wake on lan or buy one of the little remote PC start half length cards.
Looks good, but Amazon UK sold out and don't know when it will return. Also running off the Mains when the most likely placement is near the ceiling is not ideal, long trailing wires etc
Aqara: because you already have a yacht.
Hey Paul, great video, but I have 2 questions?
1) your video is showing the app where you're mapping your room out like an above view. Where are you placing the sensor where it can recognize a similar layout? Is it mounted up high or sitting on a bookshelf somewhere on a wall?
2) why does Lord Vader have the voice of C-3PO?
Love the content bud, thanks for the awesome videos!
If you have tuya/smartlife platform how to connect this sensor?
Sadly, I’m a victim of UA-cam tease. I’ve been wanting one of these since release and seen loads of UA-cam videos recommending it. Annoyingly, I’ve not seen them in stock once.
They're always in stock when I check, probably because I'm too broke to afford it. I just checked and it's in stock on Amazon US right now.
@@ToniHinton Thanks, Sadly it’s Amazon UK that remains out of stock.
Athom has just released an ESPHome equivalent, that IS in stock and is quite cheap.
Currently, most FP2s are unusable, due to a shit firmware update.
Does it work with Hubitat?
Be careful Paul, if Aqara ever want to be rid of you they might ask you to review their smoke alarms. Don't fall for it!
Will these work in smartlife app and set scenes please
like quite a few other people i've got problems with ghosts .... it worked quite well in the beginning but since the firmware update to 1.1.7 it has become rather unreliable :-( if it works then it's great - if it doesn't - it sucks!
Does it work with IFTTT or is there a way to integrate it with Smartthings?
0:59 Never disappointed😂
5:00 And.......why does Stu have a blow up Paul Hibbert doll???🤔
Aqara sensor: Finally a SMART device! So far everything is just dump sensors, invented many years ago, just used in a new way.
The problem is: "Aqara Presence Sensor FP2: Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock." :(:(:(:(:(
Saaattuurrrdaaayyy paaaulll daaayyy! 🎉This is so ooo freekin cool
Thanks dude! ❤️
Am I the only one that’s disappointed that this vid has a thumbnail of a game controller, but there aren’t any jokes about Bezos needing a submersible to go with all his yachts. 😜
Despite the missed opportunity, this is super exciting tech! Not only for what it does now, but for what it means for where smart homes are heading in the near future. I hope Aqara pairs this tech with a smart light bulb. Would make for an expensive light bulb, but would mean that it could be mains powered by the power supply for our light fittings, while being in a prime location to cover a room. 🤩
Is it compatible with tuya?
I would like to see a square version and it powered by 240 v ac so it could be permanently hardwired, but at £36 not a bad price
ROFL! At first, I was like, "who the heck is that blonde?"... Then I busted out laughing when I realized "she" was about to turn around and say "it just works!" 🤣🤣🤣
With such a low power consumption it’s odd that they didn’t add a rechargeable battery inside like some pir motion sensors do, they last a while before needing to charge
best longstanding jokes on youtube
I know these are sold out everywhere, but how much were they when they were in stock please?
Hadn't really heard about this one before...for those of us who don't use an Aqara Hub at all, how would you set up zones only in home assistant?
Don't bother with this, at this point in time.
Most sensors sold, so far, are duds and the Aqara Reddit is full of reports of nonfunctional FP2s.
If you can wait, then please do.
If you really need a presence sensor, then Athom have just released an ESPhome version, that actually works.
On the one hand this being powered through USB is great, as there's nothing more annoying than having something like this that you're probably going to want to position somewhere a bit hard to reach to cover the space properly running out of battery every 5 minutes and needing to be changed.
On the other hand, if you want to put it in a room you've not long decorated, having the option to battery power it would be great so you don't have to either have to pay to get a plug installed somewhere to plug a USB power into to run this thing, or end up with cables running up the walls...
Also, this does presence and light but not temperature?
Subscribed just because i seen Destiny 2
I sam 8:56 that you have issues with xiaomi (roborock) integration… is it since last upgrade? I have it too…
Oh a missed opportunity in that blooper.
'Good, Good, Exactly as intended, come youngling to the dark side'
Vader sounded more like C3PO
Currently unavailable on amazon, sad times....
Mid-July they reckon. Keep your eyes peeled!
saying not available on amazon :-(
regarding Google stuff worthy of the bin... I would if Jeff 'not enough yachts' Besoz would recognise Dutch is a language too... Sadly it still isn't available in Echo stuff... and my missus (bless her heart) still isn't sold on the whole automation, let alone having to speak English to a device.
Just got one. Will have to try
Prepare for a major disappointment.
A shit firmware update has rendered most FP2s unusable and there's no timeframe for a fix, outside of china.
@@user-xu2pi6vx7o it's working decently right now. Main issue is the light sensor seems to not be working properly at all. A lot of times it just sits at 47 lux.
Also this reminded me how scummy IFTTT is with their pricing model. Going to have to get myself a Home Assistant to properly utilize this thing
Who has some good ideas to hide the wire if we are mounting it high
I would say a cupboard with shelves in it, just drill a hole in the cupboard to run the cable to a socket behind the unit. Or on top of a cabinet is probably even easier.
@@paulhibbert if only, but there will be a door there haha, need a good wire that will be long enough and thin enough
Not selfless, wallet enhancing. The more it can work with, the more value it has and the more they'll sell. Something Cr-apple will never understand. In other news, cancer necrosis/thrombosis is fun...
I have an interesting new little gadget set up. A bank of x large PSU fans can be found for "cryptomining machines". I have a bank of three that are jammed into a window (using the central latch as a support) so they act as an air pump controlled by a smart socket.. Makes a lot of difference. The fan speed is adjustable by controller too.
PS will be testing the new zigbee fingerbot they've just bought out. Hopefully this one will last more than 11 months (all the insides on the previous one being plastic that's edam with delusions of grandeur) . It's going to be having hugs with my tuya astromech. 😂
Do you think it would work with Hubitat?
Hmm, good question! The FP1 had a driver written specifically for it by the community, so I strongly suspect one will be written for this if the FP1 driver doesn't already work. This is a lot more popular than the FP1 was
😊
@@paulhibbert Good point, the community is thriving on Hubitat!
I'm glad the screenshot wasn't the video. I was in two minds whether I wanted to even watch it.
Better late than never to review this.
No one has used this outside. I think it would be great to sense people approaching your front door from 8 meters away and start streaming your camera to a smart display.
With Google you can trigger routines when a light or plug is turned on.
Watched the entire video. I'm confused... Can you use multiple of these sensors with overlapping coverage areas?
... or one per room?
At this point in time, you should stay away from these, as they've been semi bricked by a shit firmware update.
Currently, every single Reddit thread on the FP2, is about them being more or less nonfunctional.
How did you get your Xbox integrated in your smart home?
1:13: good thing you’re not in Florida, or you’d be illegal
To anyone impressed by this video, the running joke in the Aqara community is that UA-camrs got all the functioning ones.
And I agree. I have one that has between 1 to 5 seconds of lag on detection, 30 seconds of lag on clearing detection, it consistently fails to detect 2 people sitting a meter Infront of it and when it does detect, it detects me as 5 people at the same time.
So yeah, not a functional product, if you're not a famous UA-camr.
If you want a functional product, get either the Everything Presence One, or Athom's version of the EPO design. They both use ESPHome and actually work.
I'm so curious about that chair on the left. 😮Where did you find that one please?
In case some others wonder the same thing, it's a Kinnls Cameron chair. ^^
Do you need the Aqara hub for the initial zone set up?
No
To my knowledge the answer to this is yes! I can't see how else you would do it.
The Akara FP2 Presence Sensor is a game-changer in smart home technology. This device has been lauded by many tech enthusiasts, including Stu from Stu's Reviews, Brian from Automate Your Life, and Reed from Smart Home Solver, but it's the unique features and capabilities of the Akara FP2 that truly make it stand out.
The FP2 is not just a motion sensor; it's a radar. It can detect the presence of up to five separate people in up to 30 separate zones, meaning it can cater to individual preferences in a shared space. For instance, when you sit at your desk, your lights can come on, and when your partner sits at their desk, their lights can come on - all from one sensor.
But the Akara FP2 goes beyond just detecting presence. It's a significant development in smart homes in a rather unexpected way. The device works with Amazon Alexa and Apple Homekit, and soon, it will fully work with Google Home too. It operates via Wi-Fi and entirely locally without cloud connectivity or a separately purchased Akara bridge. This means that even if your internet goes down, it will still work.
What's more, the Akara FP2 is incredibly open. It stores every piece of information that you set up in the app directly to the device, not in the cloud. This means that your data is yours and yours alone. It's up to you what you do with that information. This kind of functionality is rarely seen in third-party devices, making this a truly selfless move on Akara's part.
The sensor is mainly powered, consuming between one and two watts, which equates to about five pounds of electricity per year. The savings you can make by having a device that turns off when you leave the room can be exponential. Plus, the sensor's range is impressive, with a range of 26 feet working perfectly.
The Akara FP2 also has three individual modes: it can just detect motion, detect separate zones, or detect if someone has fallen down. This is particularly useful for elderly relatives, as you don't need a camera to know if they've fallen over.
At 82 pounds on Amazon, the Akara FP2 is not a cheap sensor, but there is nothing to compete with this level of accuracy. It's worth every penny because there are 30 presence sensors in one housing. Akara plans to take this even further by pairing multiple sensors together to make one single map.
In conclusion, the Akara FP2 Presence Sensor is a revolutionary device set to transform the smart home industry. It's a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to enhance their home automation system.
This is pretty cool, I'm guessing chatgpt summarised it, but how did you source the original script dialogue?
@@paulhibbert- the auto transcript in UA-cam is usually good enough. Expand the description, and scroll all the way down.
@@eric_has_no_idea thanks mate! Never spotted that before!
Hi Guys, does anyone know if the FP2 can trigger routines based upon how many people are in a zone at any one time? For example, if more than two people sit at the dining table, can specific routines can be triggered? Romantic lights and music perhaps? Or more practically, setting the lighting just right for eating dinner with the family? I can see this having some amusing results lol!
I watched the Smart home solver video recently. Eerily simular to my post! It does what I hoped it would.
£82 😮. I'd like one if they were available, but I'll wait until they are £20 on AliExpress.
6:00 five actually..
If it has to be ceiling mounted and powered... someone needs to 3D print / wire a ceiling rose power connector?
I mean... if you're using smart-bulbs then you already leave power to the rose turned on anyways...
