- This is so cool, and my wife hates it 😂. The Abode smart alarm system and sensors do some really cool Smart home stuff with Alexa, Apple Homekit and Home Assistant.
This video is sponsored by Abode, all opinions are my own.
This is a review of everything from the keypad, to the motion sensors, to the contact sensors, to the camera system. Some proper good Smart Home gadgets in this kit!

I have a quick question paul. What smart button would you recommend with Amazon alexa?
Switchbot is one of the tidiest solutions but very expensive. If you can do the whole home assistant thing then an aqara button connected to a conbee stick works great for me!
Abode sound like a dyslexic graphics software company.
U N S U B S C R I B E D ... Not a single bit of hibbert music... and not a sex joke either.....wtf.. maybe try again next week ?
I have an Abode alarm and use Home Assistant. I can't figure out how to make a card that has away, home and standby for it's setting. Did you do anything like that with your set up I can copy?
Thanks Paul. Now my son is running around the house screaming "It Just Wooooooooorks!" 😂
And that just made my day 🤣
Your fault Hibbert. 😂😂😂
It just wooooooorks!
And that's the risk of letting your son watch Paul! lol
Two bonus things to note regarding the Keypad and the Keyfob - they both have a programmable button that is exposed to HomeKit for use in scenes and automations. “Goood-uh, goood-uh”.
😳 can't believe I missed that! Thanks dude! Hope you're well ❤️
At this point I like smugly mentioning that my home alarm (a DSC Power 832) was installed 26 years ago and it is still working! It has 14 wired zones across 2 partitions (house and garage/outbuildings). The house PIRs are "pet proof" and detect the difference very well. A few years ago I added an Envisalink card which gave me online/app access to it then earlier this year I added it into Home Assistant (even allowing me to use the individual zones as entities) meaning the system is now more flexible than it has ever been. Now I have said this of course, I bet it conks out tomorrow 🙃
I've been using Abode with Home Assistant for a while, and the multisensors work just fine for me. They report temperature, light level, and humidity in addition to motion. They appear in HA as two different devices, one for motion and one for the environment sensors, so it can be easy to miss that it's all there.
A lot of the time Paul reviews things I either have no interest in or can't afford ... Or the juice just isn't worth the squeeze for me. That's OK, I never miss one of his videos anyway. This is the first thing I do on Saturday morning while having my morning coffee and Paul never disappoints.
This time he reviewed something I'm interested in and can afford. If you need more coverage (meaning more gizmos) than I do the price of the extra gear could add up pretty fast. In my situation the price is quite reasonable. I "built" the system I need on the Abode website and it comes in at a tiny bit less than $100. So this video review is very useful to me.
When it comes to Paul's videos it's worth sifting through the coal to wait for the occasional diamond.
TLDR:
I don't want or need geofencing. I have no problem with just telling the system to disarm as I walk in. With geofencing I'm never quite confident that everything worked as it should so I prefer the more positive control of arming and disarming the system directly. I've been using "smart home" gear for years and in my experience -- Smart Homes aren't very smart and Artificial Intelligence isn't all that intelligent. The steady advantages when things work as they should just barely outweigh the headaches and frustrations when something quits working.
I don't want or need professional monitoring. I live in a semi-rural area where there is literally no significant crime. This is rural AMERICA and the bad guys know that if they don't want to be perforated and their juices vented to the atmosphere then it's best to stay away from this sort of area. Seriously, the biggest crime within 5 miles of my home in the last few years was mailbox vandalism. Seriously, if you're up to no good, then you'd be very wise to do your thing somewhere else. Seriously, people here only call 911 after you bleed out and it's too late to do anything to save you. The police services here are also *_very_* understanding about this sort of thing. I don't need professional monitoring, I have neighbors and they have me. Professional monitoring would simply be a waste of a monthly fee.
What I do want is something not ridiculously expensive that will do what this system does without a monthly fee. This Abode gear looks pretty good to me and at the risk of sounding like an asskisser I'm very confident in Paul's reviews. I yank his chain for fun sometimes but he's very thorough and honest in his reviews. Apparently he's figured out that quality is more important than quantity. By which I mean that he will get and keep more viewers if he avoids the temptation to post glowing reviews of utter garbage just to soak up all the product sponsorships he can glom onto.
Paul doesn't know me and if he did he probably wouldn't like me. I'm a crusty old curmudgeon and not overly likeable. But I think of Paul as my "friend" and have followed his work for years. He's my go-to guy for keeping up on this sort of thing. Watching his video is literally the first thing I do on Saturday morning.
Thanks so much for this man. Means a lot.
Loving it. Amazing mate.
Thanks! You crack me up!! Always great in-depth brilliant videos and reviews. You are the BEST.
Thanks so much man. I needed that this morning. ❤️
We’ve had abode for years now and have been very happy with it, you do need a subscription now for the geofence but like you said there are work arounds. and yes it is indeed very loud
That price isn’t terrible, especially with 20% off and the camera that doesn’t work with HomeKit is “free” with the kit so get an Aqara G2 Pro for like $60 (or less!) and you’re good to go! It’s a a solid option, even with the subscription fees because, any alarm system worth buying off the shelf will have them. Excellent review!
Judging by the look that the very lovely Mrs. Hibbert gave at the beginning of the video, I would caution Paul to tread lightly with the Star Trek themes 😂
Happy Tuesday Paul.
Happy Hibbertday 😁
❤️ right back atcha dude!
This is fantastic, I’m in the market for a security system because I’m buying my first house and I really like the Star Trek voice activated feature
That is so freaking cool! I am going to build it my self. ASAP
Happy Saturday Paul. Thank you sir.
Happy Saturday Ron!
😂😂😂Perfect review!
Mrs H hacks the arming sequence to " Paul is an idiot!" 😅🖖
lol. Even though I am interested in all these gadgets you managed to make me laugh with all these funny faces and acting. “On the fly “ 🤣🤣👍🏽 never gets old. Thx
Happy Saturday 🎉
Take a look at Alarmo for your setup
I realised while watching this that your videos give me the same feeling I used to get when I was a kid and really looked forward to my favourite tv shows with excitement. You should be on TV
Thanks man. I’ve had a rough week with UA-cam and I needed to hear this 💕
@-RealPaulHibbert 😎😎
I tried implementing a home security system with Alarmo for Home Assistant. It works, but only sort-of. And no monitoring option. This Adobe system, however, seems like it checks all the boxes and the $20/month monitoring rate is very reasonable. I will be looking into this. (And probably purchasing it).
Thanks again for a great video 😊 how come you never talk about homey?
Pauls wife leaving work "Right, best get home then and hope pauls not replaced me with a sex robot"
Paul taking a shit in 4:07 lol
It does sound a bit like that these days. 😬
The only thing that bests this is Ajax - integration tho is so~so and local I am not 100% sure about.
But it's got a lot more sensors/devices available.
6:12 😂 at Google.
I stopped using Google stuff because of what you said, Paul.
Best thing I could’ve done.
Ajax alarms has HomeKit compatibility I think
Hi , thanks for great videos . I am getting galaxy watch 6 which supports bixby or Google assistant, my whole house is alexa , can bix or Google assistant be made to control all my devices? Thanks . Ken
My little daughter used to round around on Saturdays saying whos the zigbe, then she went on to say Homeeee Assistant especially when i went down the rabbit hole, and now she keep saying it just worksssss 🤦🏾♂️🤣🤣 cheers Paul 👊🏾 😂
This is the best. 🤣 ❤️❤️❤️
I have that similar motion/time light setup in my basement with an aqara plug and an aqara motion sensor. The only downside? A friggin’ squirrel found a way down there and was having a weeklong rave until I trapped the lil’ bastard and took it for a long car ride! So many motion alerts… it got into our Halloween decorations at one point and was just flinging them around! Lucky I let it live frankly. 8:10
The cloud reliance for features I've already paid for makes this a non-starter - the same as for so much of the smart home industry.
The Eufy security solution I've had for about 2 years now does most if not all of this, at a lesser price (on amazon sales) and without subscription fees.
Not trying to be "That guy", just offering an alternative :)
Ha Paul I think I have worked out that you are the meaning of life, the universe and everything! 😮
I am honoured 🤣🌍
I can only imagine my wife hating this as much as yours, and she's a Trekkie. Should have made the shutdown code 1-1 A or zero-zero-zero-destruct-zero, if it's good enough for Kirk to use as hist default blow up the ship password for 30 years, it's good enough for us now 🙂
Upvoted for the 'on the fly' jokes.......
My favorite one. 😂
Still looking for a local keypad to use in HA 😢
Have you heard of Konnected? It works with Apple Home kit too and you can also hook up wired sensors and switches to it too so you don't have to worry about batteries.
I had seen this before and almost did a video for them but the installation just like it was way beyond my expertise as it involved rewiring my existing alarm. Talks broke down after I said I would need some one to come install it. I'm just not smart enough !
It works with Home Assistant too, so no need for CrApple.
@@paulhibbert a video for them? I thought these videos were for us, the viewers!! I demand a refund!
Hey Paul! I'd be really interested to see you review Konnected! It's supposed to be a local focused home alarm that also allows you to connect your existing wired sensors and stuff! Would be interested to see your take on it. All the best!
I'd love to but you've seen my DIY skills right? 🤣
Oh man, it'll just make the video 100x better honestly!@@paulhibbert
It's your favourite "elephant in the room" lover here... After seeing how you are after a few cups of coffee, can you do the next video after taking some crack? This way we can really assess the problem!
Great video as always matey.
Thanks dude! The elephant thanks you.
1234...thats the same as my luggage
the fly jokes makes me laugh every time
Hey Paul the Multi sensor does show the lux sensor and temperature in HomeKit and I am pretty sure it does in Home Assistant. I love my Abode system, been using it sense 2019. I would only tell people to stay away from the cameras they just suck. I would also tell this that want it just for HomeKit to go with the Iota version that was the first Abode system to work with HomeKit so the firmware is a bit more solid.
When I added it the Information wasn't there and when I asked them they said that data would only appear in their app 🤔
@@paulhibbert it shows up in the room you have it set in HomeKit for example I have one in my pantry room. I select that room and up top you should see the lux temperature and occupancy tile. Oh btw welcome to Apple Home we have been waiting for you. 😀
I await my shift on the death star !
Rings V2 keypad has a motion sensor. I use it to turn lights on at a low level in the hall via HA.
Nice! I've heard good things about rings alarm system. Reed from smart home solver raves about it.
@@paulhibbert it’s great but to fully work with apple needs homebridge. Handy for you to know now you’re an apple fanboy! 😀
This system would be perfect if they did vibration sensors as well, I’d buy one
They do! 🙂
Where is the bait Mr Master? Did it fly away?😂
The lack of bait baited you into this comment. The real bait was inside you all along!
@@paulhibbertvoice of a master!
Wasnt this video already released previously? Did I hallucinate an entire paul hibbert saturday video? Travel forwards then back in time? Likely no.
I'm not sure what the price of a beer is these days if I send you 2 quid that will get you a pint in spoons how about £3.99 that will get you a burger and a burger!😂
When any company says, “We are in a financially secure position” I automatically think of football clubs who say, “We have complete faith in the manager”, who then promptly gets fired. I’m sure the people at Woolworths, Comet and BHS thought much the same thing before plummeting headlong into receivership. Seriously, these companies need to make this cloud stuff optional, so we can spend our money without fear of ending up with an expensive paperweight. Or in this case, a dumb alarm with a couple of function-free doodads.
It’s a shame, really, because this was looking like a serious option for replacing my existing dumb alarm which is ancient and needs a replacement back-up battery (which looks like a proprietary one and therefore expensive or unavailable). If someone much cleverer than I can find a way into the API and decouple it from the cloud, I’d be very interested
3:08 Paul, that is now called a ‘GRUMPY’. 😊 3:08
Knacker your grumpy has a strange ring to it 🤣
Sounds great, and finally a smoke detector which can easily be part of a one stop smart home solution. Everyone seems to ignore smart smoke detectors??? What happens with the geofencing when at night my mobile phone battery runs out and it goes off will this then switch on the Alarm because it thinks I am not at home? Nice surprise in the morning when you get up I think.
I think geofencing normally relies on more than one factor, though I have to admit I didn't get round to testing this!
I would expect this type of answer from a Philips hue user@@paulhibbert
Why do I have the exact opposite experience with Google and Alexa? Google talks only to HA and the only problems I have are ZigBee sensors not penetrating the thick walls in my old house.
Are you a minion of Bezos, Hibbert? 😂
(mostly commenting each week for your algo Paul, love the channel)
Thanks dude! ❤️ good of you.
Love the channel and details.
I made the jump to Home Assistant after seeing this channel to see what it is like and it is amazing.
As I have this I started last week looking at Alarmo, and as I have a tablet on the wall this seems ideal.
What do you use that "breaks"?
Eurgh, don't get me started 🤣 right now I'm working out in the dark because I can't be arsed to turn the gym on since the ZIGBEE motion sensor stopped triggering following a change to my WiFi details. How are those two things even linked?? 🤣
@@paulhibbert should not be. I used to use WiFi only but started to swap out to Zigbee....
Ooohhh the zigbee
Hey Paul, why is this video 'unlisted' yet still visible on your channel homepage?
Because UA-cam is demented 🤣. If I put something in a playlist it sticks it straight onto my home screen even if it's unlisted. I complained to youtube years ago and they chuckled like they normally do and carried on as if no complaint had been made. 600 people saw this video before its intended release.
@@paulhibbert I see I've struck a nerve 😊
Have you tried scheduling a Premiere ?
I haven't tried that! If I set it to the normal scheduled mode then it stops this issue, but then the sponsor can't check the video out before release which a lot of them insist on. Annoying really. I could set it to private but then it's more awkward to share with someone I'm just communicating with by email as I THINK it requires their UA-cam handle. I could be wrong.
I did something similar with Home assistant and my partner thought I was crazy.. Last night we had someone snooping around in the garden and they triggered my alarm automatons... The would be thief ran a mile and my partner no longer thinks i'm crazy.. Great success! Though im sure my neighbors now hate me heh
i do love this idia it sounds amazing. however a year or so ago i watched your video on the boundery home alarm and brought it. they have now gone bust so i am essentially left with a rather expensive paper weight. if i was to buy into this would it be possible to use my existing boundery sensors and pair them up with this alarm?
Sadly not man, and I'm so sorry about boundary. They are the reason this video has a hefty warning at the end.
However your boundary sensors are zwave and one of my patrons has confirmed they will pair to home assistant via a zwave dongle!
Fair play. I will have to have a look on how to do this then. Thankyou for the content. I always loveing your vids :))
Booo, no HKSV.
Excellent video as usual Mr H!
Thanks brother!
They have another version that works with zwave and zigbee. Would that keep it local?
It is likely that the zwave and zigbee sensors could be repurposed for use on a zigbee or zwave system such as smart things hubitat or home assistant if abode went bust, but it's not a given.
You'll probably find forum entire out in the wider world if its possible as home assistant users especially like to take stuff like this and try to get it working with their internal system.
Funny 😂
Looks like a great product but I would be surprised if it was of interest to HomeAssistant users given that they probably already have motion detection, door/window sensor/indoor cameras etc and can use their smart speakers as a siren so they already have all the elements of a security system.
I guess some folks might like the idea of home assistant tie in but also having the 3rd party monitoring.
This is what I do. I have ring because I want that professional monitoring, but can also use all the sensors in home assistant.
Google have got a lot better automations / routines now via their new interface, which allows a lot of programming to be done. It's in public preview at the moment, but so far it looks to be more powerful than Alexa routines.
Alarmo in Home Assistant is probably one of the easiest if you want to go DIY instead of off the shelf.
Good to hear man! They better release it soon before they lose all their customers!
@@paulhibbert Tried to post you instructions on how to get to the public preview, but youtube seems pretty good at finding what it thinks are URL's, even ones to it's owner.
Anyway there is a public preview of the automations available via the web only at this stage
Thanks Brendan, I'll check it out!
Morning (well, afternoon now) dude.
Happy Saturday brother!
What frequency is used on those devices?
ZigBee, Rf433, Z wave, WiFi?
RF
My biggest concern that would stop me buying is the risk of them going bust. Boundary was a promising company where that happened earlier this year.
Also not a fan of monthly subscriptions
And if somebody comes at your place with a signal jammer... They will create many false alarms causing you to disable and then goodbye.
This whole system is RF and ethernet so the signal jam thing is not relevant here.
My thoughts exactly on the Boundary system. Always thought it looked ok but has left a lot of people high and dry since going bust.
@peterhanlon5303 You’d have every right to be concerned. I bought into the Boundary system and it was absolutely plagued with bugs. Eventually, although somewhat begrudgingly, they agreed to give me a refund if I returned the hardware. I did so then had to chase them for my refund which never arrived because they went into administration, then folded. A costly experience at £450 plus the ten months of subscription fees they happily took. I watched all the reviews (as we do, right?) before taking the plunge and nobody had a bad word to say about it. Strangely, none of the same reviewers I watched have ever had a bad word to say about it since. I’m sure there are many people that buy into these type of things on the strengths of their favourite reviewers comments without understanding the reviewer got paid and probably never actually used the item in a real life environment. I went back to basics and installed a Yale alarm. Not a single false alarm, push notifications and no subscription fees.
Yes, better to go with a known brand like Google.. er... maybe not Google
What about EUFY? Don't they have a security system with keypad and sensors? No monthly charges either.
Oooh, I'll have to check that out!
They do... but it relies on WIFI... not such a good idea when it comes to a security system imho.
Hey Paul, that iPhone suits you sir 👍
Suits you sir! Ogh!
I would love the Alexa app to have built-in password protected routines, so if I said "Deactivate shields" it would ask for a password just like it did at the beginning of this video. A poor man's workaround is to name the routine something like "Deactivate shields Picard Alpha 5 6 Delta".
Does it work with hubitat?
Looks like there is an unofficial integration...community.hubitat.com/t/using-abode-sensors/85661
If something works with homekit, them all it's capabilities in homekit remain local-based and it doesn't matter if the company that made that product dies out. So at least you always have that
When I connected the alarm system to homekit and then pulled the Internet cable homekit lost visibility of all sensors and could no longer set the alarm 😬
@@paulhibbert shoot… oh well,, then it was supposed to be like that 😂. They have been letting many more companies in their “walled garden” lately so they are probably letting everyone’s cloud apis do the work.
Wish they weren't. It's nice to see more compatability but, seeing cloud stuff creep in to what has always been a local solution is a shame.
It looks good but that full plan subscription monthly fee is very steep!
Yeah, I will definitely be using this system via home assistant or homekit.
So in our house you are now apparently allowed to wake a sleeping wife if a celebrity has died, it’s snowing or Paul Hibbert has bought an I phone!! Well they are my husbands new rules I found out last weekend after your post about your new phone!!
🤣 it is a kind of dieing.
I miss the dancing wife:(
couldn’t you use the apple homekit controller integration to add this system to home assistant offline
Homekit relies on the cloud for this system too sadly
@@paulhibbertthat’s weird i didn’t even know a homekit device could relay on the cloud
@@ryanhakalmazian I know right! I was surprised too, but as soon as I pull the Internet homekit no longer has control or visibility despite still being connected to the same WiFi router
@@paulhibbert corporate greed

*Hits the like button then presses play*
I was sold untill the cloud reliance... what a shame home assistant dosent work locally
The dedicated home assistant integration doesn't work locally.
HOWEVER, home assistant also supports this alarm system through its own homekit integration which IS local.
When I connected the alarm system to homekit and then pulled the Internet cable homekit lost visibility of all sensors and could no longer set the alarm 😬
Is it as good as the boundary doorstop I currently have 🤔🤣. I've gone full HA with alarmo, a keypad and a shed load of aqara sensors. There's no subscription and it won't curl up and die on me.
😢 Boundary is exactly the reason I focused so heavily at the end on the cloud aspect and the risks therein.
Your boundary sensors all work with HA though BTW via any zwave dongle. Not a total loss thankfully!
Does the system have a facility built in for when Alexa replies I'm sorry, I don't know that and then sets the alarm off? 😂
I'm sorry I can't do that Dave. 😬
😂😂😂😂😂😂@@paulhibbert
Am I really the first one to point out that Home Assistant can also connect to this alarm through its own Homekit integration, which IS COMPLETELY LOCAL?
Ring version 2 keypad does all of that, plus it's Z-wave which opens endless possibilities. The Ring keypad also has 3 other buttons that can be single, double, and held for 9 other automations of your choice. There's a countdown light bar built in signaling when the alarm will go off and so much more.
Is this the keypad if used standalone in HA? Or can you trigger those automations within the wider ring ecosystem?
@robbalderstone Actually, I'm using it with Samsung Smartthings since it's Z-wave. I have various automation based on the keypad's built-in motion sensor as well as the police, medical, and fire keys on the keypad that can be remapped for what ever you want.
So, to answer your question, yes, this is the keypad.
Nice!!
#RespectThePeel
Not sure I’d want to pay a subscription for a feature that disarms the system when my geofenced stolen phone comes to my house, however unlikely.
* Furiously typing*
Aaaaaacturallllyyyyy Aqara has a security system, so there!

No keypad though 😢
Sorry to burst your bubble Paul but your SIM backup can be nobbled by a cheep SIM blocker. I won't go into this online but take it from a person who works in the security industry I have seen it done. Also if you kick in your front door you will also have ample time to take the magnetized keypad off the wall and dance on it so no more system. And just remember your system is online so it's only as secure as your WiFi password (password123). Love your Chanel do keep it up.
Thanks for the warning dude. however dancing on the keypad won't stop the base station from informing me of the break in and I'd like to think the vast majority of crack heads aren't going to be blocking the sim that they don't know is there 😉
Now you are “not” an Apple Fan boy. “Now your journey to the Dark side is complete”. Get ready for Homebridge and other great stuff on your Home Kit journey. “We will watch your career with great interest”
Yes those were both Star Wars lines and I am a big Nerd
It's a pity it RF and not ZigBee or Thread
Abode say they're going from strength to strength, well they would say that wouldn't they.........................................................
Aye, but they backed it up with talk about their recent expansion.
I somewhat disappointed that the code to deactivate shields wasn’t 16309 …..

Stop it! I'm 47, time is going so fast, I feel like I was in my 20's last week!
Terrifying right??
I thought I watched this last week...
You probably did. UA-cam just leaks your stuff to your homepage if you put it into a playlist even if you set it to unlisted. Genius! 🤣
I found this episode, a bit alarming !!!! :)
Dad jokes! 🤣
As an embedded software engineer, with a focus on security, products like these always make me suspicious. Many similar systems have been found to have some huge security flaws, and none of the newer systems seem to address them. I'm not really aware of people going around and testing them, and I personally don't have nearly enough money to buy these systems and test them myself. I hope one day manufacturers will actually put effort into securing the systems they build
Objection your honour, calls for speculation.
@@paulhibbert I'm not saying it's not secure. But enough competitors (and smart home products in general) have been proven to be insecure, that as a consumer I don't really feel safe without proof claiming the contrary 🤷 I'd love to see report/article saying I'm wrong, I'll happily eat my words
Objection your honour my client is innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.
@@paulhibbert 😂 Unfortunately for you I have different moral standards when it comes to my personal money 🤷
But if you send me one, I'll evaluate it 😉
Arg, forgive me for being negative here but with so many things that don't work and you need a third party for, why pay for it? + Philips Hue is fiscally safe too but that didn't stop them removing support for an old device There should be no excuse for a cloud requirement (optional maybe, but not a requirement)
I would personally prefer a non cloud based system too, but that is their whole thing, a system that they primarily take care of for you. They have a security company that will monitor your alarm if you want them to.
How on earth you made Alexa ask you for password and react to that?
It's just built in. You create the pin as part of setting up the device with Alexa 😊
Ok..... I'm 1.5min into the vid and I have to ask..........Do you have a giant Darth Vader helmet, or is it just the camera perspective? And if you have a giant Darth Vader helmet......WHERE DID YOU GET IT?!?!?!?
I just have a tiny head. 🤣
My first smart phone was an Apple. After a friend show'd my how much better his Android phone was i switched and will never go back
There are advantages to both. I do keep finding new reasons I might want to go back, but we'll see
@@paulhibbert don't do it!!!
We all know your access code is really "Omicron, Omicron, Alpha, Yellow, Daystar , 2, 7" 😉
