@BlueyBloke i really hope you didn't host a vpn meant to be used by other people (like a tor node). the whole point of the vpn is to re-route traffic as if you were coming from your home network. your isp has no way of detecting that you're hosting a vpn if you're the only person using it.
Its pretty easy to do actually. I setup my own OpenVPN server on Vultr (but you can do that with any VPS site) and routed my traffic through that. Follow this guide and you can set it up within 10 mins: ua-cam.com/video/IneAGgh9hQg/v-deo.html Also download the config file as that I think is the only way to get it working.
@BlueyBloke Hah lol... Horrible ISP! What type of VPN, OpenVPN, SSTP, IPSec, etc...? They can detect port usage, and if they log traffic they might be able to flag a few VPN types with horrible security. You can always run an OpenVPN server on a non-default port. It doesn't matter if you're the only one logging into it or if you have multiple friends using it as well. An ISP shouldn't flag you for spam or whatever, unless they've clearly stated that you should not be hosting anything. And in that case I'd just find another ISP!
Not really, they knew exactly what they're getting into if many people follow their guide. I installed it last night. It doesn't seem to block all UA-cam ads on my Sony Blueray player though. AdBlock Plus on my PC seems to be fool proof. Pi-Hole isn't as good, but, I guess it helps a little. I think UA-cam serves the ads from the same servers that serve the main content
@@idmhead0160 UA-cam ads come from the same servers and aren't 'served' by an external URL. They won't be blocked. They aren't the same as 'ads' in the traditional sense. Well, youtube changes ads servers too mutch, and even uses the same server that streams the video for your computer... it may seem that worked for a while, then it starts spitting ads again
UA-cam actually forbids creators from using "ads" other than theirs. They have to call them sponsors or UA-cam could prevent any of their future videos from being monetized.
Don't expect PiHole to block in-video ads. I know it's demonstrated in the video, but it does not work nowadays. It's still useful to setup a DNS Sinkhole in my opinion, just don't expect it to block in-video ads.
You can block YT adds by routing all YT traffic trough a VPN tunnel on a a server in a US sanctioned country like for example Iran. Try it just by using a vpn server located in Iran and all adds are gone, poof!

Little bit confused. First, in a techquickie video 6 years ago, you take a stance against AdBlock. In this video, you show us how to set up lan adblock and request that if we use this technique, we should buy some of your merch (presumably to offset the lost revenue from ads). Then, on twitter, you say that adblock == piracy. You also go on to say that buying merch does not offset the lost revenue from blocking ads (ethically). So what is your *actual* stance on adblock? If you support it, why make a video and a tweet saying you're against it? And if you don't, why did you make this video, instructing viewers how to "pirate content" (in your own words)?
Linus is a fucking shill who will say whatever makes him money. This isn't the first thing he's flip-flopped his opinion on based on whether or not he's making a video about it, and it certainly won't be the last.

@CRINGY Idc. UA-cam is great, but it has to supply some healthy amount of commercials otherwise it becomes trash. And I'm not paying for Premium cause this is what they want to achieve. They gain users, everyone becomes dependent on the platform and then they squeeze money.
In general, no, since it works as a DNS sink. As far as the website knows, they just screwed up the URL for the ad that they're trying to serve and the domain never resolved. They can't tell that you're blocking it because you never made a DNS lookup to that domain in the first place. (Well, you actually did, but the pihole just blackholed it and didn't forward it on to i.e. google's DNS).

Em Parker that would be cool! My school successfully did that
@BlueyBloke i really hope you didn't host a vpn meant to be used by other people (like a tor node). the whole point of the vpn is to re-route traffic as if you were coming from your home network. your isp has no way of detecting that you're hosting a vpn if you're the only person using it.
@@setheaster3991 BluezBloke : hmmm mooving on
Its pretty easy to do actually.

@@idmhead0160 UA-cam ads come from the same servers and aren't 'served' by an external URL. They won't be blocked. They aren't the same as 'ads' in the traditional sense. Wow, Pandora on Android has played for over an hour without ads or long pauses. Thanks Linus!
“How to block ads”
Immediately proceeds to show ads
gotta love how all the tech tubers did these vids the moment youtube found a way around sinkholes
after watching this video and checking out the instructions on the forum, i ordered Pi Zero W and a case . It's true that Pi Zero costs 5$ (in the US) but without a network adapter which costs double that and will make your Pi bulky , it's useless . Pi Zero W(ireless) would be a much better choice as it costs 10$, has the exact same size of the Zero and you can do headless install on Wifi quite easily without having to use any adapter.
Also, no need to buy official power adapter for the Pi, as the zero runs fine on 1AMP USB charger - I measured the highest current it was drawing, it was about 0.15A
what about latency introduced because its wireless?
@@lordswaggity1213 3 weeks using it, no issues. the Pi sits near my router , 4ms average ping on it from a wired client on my network
@@lordswaggity1213 WiFi doesn't introduce any measurable latency. Not unless you have hundreds of devices connected to it. So unless you're running a convention center in your house, you should be fine.
It actually does because it's running at half duplex, but everyone to there own
My preferred solution is blocking by default, and allowing non-intrusive ads on sites I support. In the case of LTT, I'd say their most dedicated viewers (and therefore money makers) already use an ad-blocker anyway. So, in a way, the sponsors could be seen as targeted advertising to this group anyway.
Also, Adguard Home looks pretty good. When I have something like this set up, I'll be likely to use that as my solution
Well.. multiple download buttons are now gone...

Unbound + pi-hole + pivpn wireguard & pikvm : absolutely sublime
