What I love about your videos and instruction Doug is that you’re not just showing how to carve the caricature, but providing a “method” or “guide” for overall carving. That’s what most of us need. An approach that lets us go off in many directions. In this one, using the “finger” measuring method just shows how flexible and arbitrary a carver can be and still get great results. Thank you so much for this one ☝️
You Sir are a Very Gifted individual , not only with talent as a Carver , but the ability to teach others in visual an verbal quality that is second to none , there is just no comparison between any Written article or pictures to your work Thank You very much for these videos .
Doug, Just want to say I'm really enjoying taking 10-12 hours to screw up what you can do perfectly in about an hour and 15 minutes. Thanks for your videos, big time!
You talking us through the entire craving is the way a how-to video should be, I just wish everyone who does how-to/DIY videos would do the same. I subscribed to you for that simple fact. I have learned so much from your videos and I am glad you talk us through exactly what you are doing. I know we would watch these videos of your's even if they were 3 or 4 hours long.
THANK YOU, I LOVE THAT GUY, MR.MUSTACHE! I also loved your show, very good! I was 81 on the 14th and I enjoyed watching and listening while you work and I was carving my wife a ring from our red maple that was cut down from our front yard. THANKS AGAIN
i've watched four of your videos back to back so length is no problem , you have a very pleasent way of speaking which is very easy to listen to. and another great job , cant for the sun to come up so i can get some branches , i have woods full of good ones , little man looks like an irish mine supeviser from the 1800's . once again thank you for the upload ,,, great stuff

Thanks Doug, love all your carving videos. Favs are moose , bear, and the lil guys. Loved the supply run, watch it often, so peaceful . God Bless you and family, they are so lovely, you are a Blessed man. How bout carving a sitting caricature , moose , bear, lil men and ladies. “Long version please, we just enjoy your company and uplifting spirit”. Please,Please,Please.
Oh my goodness, it worked! I have carved the cutest little man named Walter!! I am strangely attached to him! Thank you so much Doug! Your instructions are amazing!!! I wish I could figure out how to share my picture of him!!!
So I started with dremel & was curious about the knife. I finally broke down & bought a knife. I very much enjoyed making my 1st lil dude. I have to say thank u bc u r the 1 who peaked my interest of the knife! I wish I cold show u my lil dude he's very flat lol but I'm still proud 😁🤪Thanks again love watching ur videos!!!!
This guy must hand extremely strong hands. It took me 20-30 cuts to his one cut. I finished the project in 25 hours with one cut finger and two blisters and my carving looked nothing like the one he did. I have new respect for knife carvers.
Hi Doug. Thank you so much, you an inspiration to me. I copied your work and sold several carvings to help fund repairs to our village church. Best wishes to you and your family. Colin Bowen (UK)
I really enjoy watching your videos, it reminds me of my dad, every time he sat down when we were in the fish farm. He will grab a piece of wood and start curving. he passed away in 2012.You make curving so easy. Thanks for sharing your videos!!
So I’m not the only one who loves to listen to you explain carving as you go, So calming it’s a beautiful thing, A meditation relaxation 😇🙏 Thank you🥰 Doug!
I dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost the account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me
@Benton Leroy Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Thanks for the tutorial Doug, all these little men have such great personality. You give a lot of inspiration to carve and I enjoyed making this man a lot.
Doug, each of your videos is better than the last. So are your carvings. It's like watching you grow as a whittler. Been watching you since the beginning. Can only hope I've grown half as much. Thank you so much!
Brilliant! I'm on a little holiday in North Carolina. When I'd had enough of the beach, this was the PERFECT way to relax and enjoy a cigar. Thank you.
First..You are who i watch to learn how to carve and I greatly appreciate that you put your videos out.. At a certain point you say to thin the head down all the way around.. So i do.. Then when i start the video back up you say.. OK we have the three sides done.. doh ! Scrap that piece..Keep up the good work.. I look foward to each and every video..
Thank you Doug for ur constant projects. My nephew's kids just love the projects I've learned from u and gene. I have lots more to do again. I couldn't without your videos 💕
Thank you for your videos. I started carving about a year and a half ago and it has changed my life and your videos have been a big part of that. I find carving to be one of the most relaxing things I've ever done. Your videos have influenced all most all of the characters I carve in one form or another and I have enjoyed carving each one of them. Someday I hope to meet you in person and shake your hand and let you know how much your simple videos have helped me. God Bless and thank you.
I just started whittling couple weeks ago thanks to stumbling on your channel. Did your wood spirit today while 'working' during conference calls, easier than I expected thanks to your great instruction. Tempted to try this one...but seems intimidating and maybe I need to crawl more before trying to run (with a knife in hand no less!)
Thanks so much. I was hoping you would update this carving. You remain the master teacher. I can't think of anyone who does more for this craft than you. Very much appreciated.
Your videos have inspired me to try whittling. I’ve got a couple little projects under my belt now and I’m hooked. Thanks for sharing such a great hobby with the world.
Thank you sir, I'm new to whittling, you got me hooked on this hobby after I cut down 3 small password trees and recognized what they were, so I went out and bought a couple knives, I haven't stayed up this late since my honeymoon, if I may suggest just one thing, you know there's always just one thing, but if you could show the finished product all the way around you would certainly help me to know where I'm going before I start, just a little better, thank you again so much!
"It's such a happy little mustache..." The Bob Ross of carving. The peaceful artist that can portage for miles then frame a house. Lol. Great video. Whatever you did with the lighting showed a lot more of the wood grain. Really liked this one.
@@anitarussum4590 I'd say that's a little bit erroneous. There will never be enough happy clouds and trees. Thank you so much for the reply. You honestly are my first ever youtube reply. I've only commented a few times, so I understand it's not a milestone. I love this freedom of disagreement. I can't figure out how to do the emojis on a computer, so two emoji smiley faces to you. If you know Doug, let him know we need more videos.
Thank you so much for sharing these tutorials Doug! For a beginner they are so well done and informative, they have made learning so much more fun and exciting. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to share your talents and teach the next generation of carvers! Keep up the great work!
I like the tutorial videos. Seeing you carve out an arm isn’t the same without you telling us why. Your dimensions in metric finger widths are so easy to follow. 😂 I love to carve, but I need practice and confidence. Your videos inspire me to at least give it a try. I carved an old wizard looking face on a walking stick last week. It’s probably not all that good, but I’m very proud of it. Thank you and keep making the great videos (with talking). 😉
Doug, great video. Thank you. Some perspective, I know as an educational or how to video it is not necessary to make a video of each variety, but... I work long hours and rarely get a lot of time to carve. I do however take a few minutes here and there to watch you carve. It lowers my stress and scratches the carving itch a little. Anyway, I just lime watching you carve, an hour plus video is fine with me. Thanks again, you serve as more than as a teacher. Just my 2cents.
Thank you for another great tutorial. Of the many available online, I find myself seeking yours out for their ease to follow, and consistent results. Thank you!
You always inspire me to improve Doug. Repurposed my old desktop computer hutch into a dedicated carving hutch this week. Waiting on the Amazon truck to deliver an under cabinet LED light. A good thing that came out of the stay at home quarantine is I believe my carving is improving due to more practice at it. Thanks !!!
Dear sir! You looked much better with your medium size beard! It looked like a big live gnome was sitting and thoughtfully carving figures of his many relatives and friends as he remembered their faces in his long underground past life. GL and thanks very much for a teaching.
Great video. I prefer the long videos with you talking too. I can work out what you're doing more easily and you explain what you're doing and why. Keep them coming please!!
You do a fantastic job in your carving and explain everything well for us beginners. One suggestion would be to let us see the results of each step a little longer. It is difficult to stop a video exactly when you stop whittling and show where you are at in the process. A Beginner who loves your work.

Excellent work my friend. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I am fairly new to carving but began a chess set last january. I am definitely looking to improve my skill set. Thanks so much for sharing your talents.
Hi Doug, you mentioned that you are trying to improve the lighting for your videos. I studied photography at Uni for a while and one cheap trick is to enclose a lamp in a box with a white interior and use that semi transparent cooking paper at the open end (one or two layers as required), I don't know what it's called - maybe baking sheet or something - greaseproof seems to ring a bell to me. It diffuses the light from the bulb to give an even 'ambience' or glow, rather than coming from a sharp point of light. Theoretically, you are looking for what is called, as I seem to remember, 5,500 Kelvin (tech name for natural daylight 'warmth' or colour cast), which is neutral, rather than the orange or blue cast associated with various home lighting bulb types. Hope it helps. By the way, what I'm learning is that carving - whittling - starts with big blocky cuts and finishes with shavings, pare cuts and tiny little detail refinements. A bit like carpentry, really. And yeah, I get the 'I watched it all' badge and what you're saying is that it's all about taking each component - or feature - and treating it to fit as the figure develops. Follow some basic guidelines but don't start with a plan, just finish with a character!
I was not bored at all with this video! I am just starting to learn so watching a lot of your videos before I begin. I do think the knife I chose has to long of a blade, but it was cheaper so I will get something different. Thank you for your videos! 👍🏼😉
