- These are the top pros and cons of the Fujifilm system in general. The most film like camera system. Today we're filming a wildlife episode on the Fuji XT4 with 70-300mm f4-5.6. We'll talk about autofocus woes, stabilization, the fuji look with film simulations etc. Is Fuji worth buying in 2022?

Love about fujifilm camera: Flagship and normal camera's spec is similiar.
Hate about fujifilm camera: Flagship and normal camera's spec is similiar.
So this is a photo camera. I am confused.
It takes real talent to show this much out-of-focus video and make it entertaining. 👍🏿
Casey's talent is amazing indeed.
I thought so many times during this video: when will Casey switch to manual focus, - just get it sharp. My fingers were so itchy.
funny thing is, these reviews help in a more useful way than most of the "serious" reviewers
Most of the "serious" ones are bought out or protecting their relationship with the company
I watched so many reviews of cameras before I bought and it was this channel and the 400 videos I watched that made me realize that all the cameras are terrible.
And that's why variety is a good thing.
Pretty much sure I'm not getting a fuji after watching this 😂😂
@@noisefekt Interestingly I totally went with Fuji. Yeah, the AF is kinda not great but the color science is so good. I mostly use jpeg straight out of the camera with fuji and rarely use for video.
I love the autofocus on my XT30, i always enjoyed full frame for that shallow depth of field but my Fuji easily exceeds that by throwing everything out of focus.
:-)
LOL :)
Same here. Happy xt20 user. Fortunately I mainly photograph landscapes 😅
Yeah especially if someone told you that sensor size has nothing to do with depth of field.
@@eagleeyephoto8715 Oh, feeling the need to act smart on the internet? Poor boy.
Kasey's attempts at wildlife videos make me appreciate how incredibly difficult it is to make those BBC shows.
Having just switched from the xt4 to an a74, I showed my wife some pictures I took and the first thing she said was "why doesn't it look as good as your old camera?" Fuji color science for stills straight out-of-the-box is incredible. Nothing some tweaking to the picture profile in my a74 won't fix!
That's gotta sting lol.
@@cameraconspiracies not gonna lie... it definitely did lol. I then started to go on a long monologue about focus tracking and received a nice eyeroll.
It means you just gotta use the gfx.
Are you using capture one or Lightroom to process the raw files?
@@jerrengrimes3708 oh this was just straight out of camera jpeg. I'm sure the raws will edit nicely.
11 minutes of out of focus sticks. Well done I stayed until the end
Love those dreamy out-of-focus shots that only Fuji and Panasonic seem to have mastered.....
When you did hit focus though, these are some of the most cinematic shots I've seen you make! Color science for nature shots, fuji just reins supreme imo.
I do lots of birding with my X-S10 and XC 50-230. On a sunny day like this you should set the exposure dial to -1 right off the bat. Set your single focus box large enough to fit the whole bird in it, DR400, and set white balance with a gray card and you’re golden. Then it’s just choosing different film sims for the shot you’re trying to make. I also have an A7III and any wildlife photography I try to do with it comes out looking like iPhone 6 color science. My Sony is great for my actual work (product photography and automotive video) but I always grab my X-E3, X-T2, and X-S10 for any personal work where I can be creative and really capture the beauty of what’s in front of me. Oddly enough, the X-E3 and XC 15-45 is my best combo for landscape and nature shots. It’s so small and light that it’s no problem to just carry it in my hand when I’m hiking. All my best nature shots have been from that combo resting on some rock or pressed against the side of a tree.
There is a setting for autofocus range. It fixes all the problems you are having. Especially good for vloging cause you can just limit the range to be inside your hands range instead of infinity.
What’s this dark magic you speak of? Is it true?
@@1StepTooFar ua-cam.com/video/h3jIy62WipU/v-deo.html
The UA-cam world needs more videos of you responding to peoples questions AND more Amazon questions please! Thank you 🙏
The music you made that rolls in around the 8 minute mark,, is just excellent. I love the chord progression! 😎👍
That telezoom was amazingly stable. But the focus... oh, my itchy fingers! I wanted so to switch to manual. I really admire you Casey, that you had the nerve to just give it chance after chance to find focus. Very entertaining stuff as usual. All thumbs up!
Love the wildlife vlogs 👍
I found that having the smallest single point AF box was too small. It didn’t give the system enough data points for the AF. Next two sizes up were the sweet spot for me. Ironically, there were a lot of times my single point AF on my X-T4 outperformed my A7SIII single point AF. True story. The Sony can still hunt a lot. Frustrating. I miss Fuji.
Brilliant episode (in the perfectly valid search for the perfect camera).
Amazing woodpecker shots. Very cinematic. 😍😍
So good as always, just those birds in the intro, they (it) messed you up as usual. Happy new year buddy.
Woodpecker slo mo was cool. That little bird hits hard.
What is needed in the Fuji is improved Stabilization for hand held shooting. It's just okay now. Bring it up the Panasonic S5 or S1H level and with the superior fuji peaking you've got the ultimate run and gun combination.
Been watching since well before you went to Thailand, but you have this wonderful schtick. We just loved to see and hear what the problems are. Oft-times the problems are you're own, but you are THE strong man! (Monkey Strength). All of it is entertaining to me.
The infamous "Bigfoot with Red Pants in Toronto Park" footage!!!!
I love my X-T4 for stills, but video is behind everyone else. Loved the woodpecker footage though.
With some practice Fuji X-T4 its a great piece of hardware and allows to create amazing photos/videos :) Imho, of course :)
This video definitely cured my GAS, especially for the 70-300 lens. Thanks!! 🫡
As a Fuji fanboy. I am really a Still shooter. Fuji has taught me not to take pictures of moving objects. I don't know why anyone uses a Mirrorless fuji as a Movie rig. When you get the shot right, I love it.
I photographed a kite surfer yesterday with my x100v and it did a fantastic job. You either have an older body, or don't know how to use your camera.
Nice video. You need to do a moire test in HD. I bought the XT4 last week and may return it because of the problem, the output is unusable. 4k is lovely, but I can deal with the files yet.
I just got the cheap RF100-400 that just came out… omg, it’s my fave lens, it’s LIGHT. I got fancy tele lens too, but 100-400 gets use cuz of weight. Stabe is amazing. That lens plus 4k crop in EOS R. I think that’s your lens dude. Don’t buy anything til you try it!! It turns into like 700mm on the R. It’s the FUNNEST lens I got. And it’s cheap too!
If only he didn’t hate Canon. 😂
Despite all of the lifehack Fuji failures you experienced, the slo-mo footage of the woodpecker is great. But I hope that you gave the woodpecker some Tylenol!
Woodpeckers are amazing. They subject their brains to up to 1200 Gs of deceleration with every strike. Scientists are still studying how they do it without knocking themselves out, in hopes of developing tech to prevent head trauma in people.
I used to be a Fuji fan boy but I had to return the Xt30… that thing froze ALL THE TIME… had to pop the battery out to reset it, a huge pain when using a tripod plate 😅
I feel your pain. I try to go out when weather permits and end up with loads of people around no matter how far down a trail I go! That autofocus is not good at all.
For wildlife it seems that you can only go for full frame that also only for the Big three Canon, Sony and Nikon. The other option probably is Olympus with that super telephoto zoom lens.
When the Fooj is on par it takes some of the best vids/photos I’ve seen.
hello mr. camera guy, what music did you use at 8:30 in this lovely video? I would love to know.. keep making videos!
New song I'm working on.
I liked the look of Provia a lot!
1.4x teleconverter is often recommended. :) Maybe there's something funky with the tracking settings, hopefully Fuji will simplify it with their next camera.
the Vlogs outdoors are truly the best!
For vlogging would you choose the xt4, s10, ex4, or the xt200.
I really want to see these Canadian Shouting Dogs.
I have this same set up and I've loved it. Granted I've literally never shot any video with it. I do agree with you that it feels like it needs more reach. That dumb 100-400 is just stupid expensive though.
I was planning on getting the 100-400 but the $600 off holiday sale didn't materialize this year, glad I got the 50-140 when it was on sale though.
You can use Fuji’s teleconverters with the 70-300. They should work well on sunny days.
I've shot a little video with the 70-300 on the XT4 and its phenomenal IMO. But yeah the lens does not reach out far enough.
hello i have a a7riii with a tamaron 28-75 2.8 g2, tokina 85 1.8 and a sigma 14-24 2.8 what should i upgrade to for mukbang videos thank you kindly
Kasey, I currently shoot with a canon RP and am debating selling it for a Fuji xh1. I know the xh1 is older, but it can be found used for pretty cheap and would be a good way to get my foot in the Fuji door for a reasonable price and leave me some money left over for a decent lens. My problems with the RP is that the RF lenses are way too expensive, and I’m tired of having the worst dynamic range in the universe. I fell for the full frame trap and bought a budget full frame, but still can’t afford decent full frame glass. Do you think I am making a good choice with switching to Fuji?
Oh the pain of tracking small birds in trees! I live on the ground floor in my old apartment building and I'm lucky to have a tiny backyard with some greenery. I use the Sigma 100-400 sometimes, but I always end up just manual focusing and craning my neck up till it breaks..lol. Jokes aside, I will say the lens performed quite a bit better l, which I guess shouldn't be surprising as it's a Canon mount version, but given that trying to find small birds up high through tons of branches is quite extreme for any camera, it was good to see it's performance as compared to my XH1 and even XT3. But again, this stuff needs tons of testing à la Philip Bloom to find the right balance amidst myriad variables. At that point, I'd rather just manual focus.
OMG.... "you should have stayed at home in your SITS bath you piece of sh*t" LOL! It's interesting to me... I have the X-T3 and haven't experienced as many of the issues that you mentioned here. I haven't done any wildlife shooting with it though. Hopefully the new generation of stacked sensor will make a difference. Pretty sure that the engineers at Fuji weren't thinking at about vlogging when they made the X-T4. They were definitely still photography focused more that video. Fantastic video today!
isn’t there some adjustment to focusing speed…. was yours on slow? Feeling i get is that you couldn’t get this crispness on the xs10…. and that quality is the fuji esp….
There's a twenty-something UA-camr Isabel Paige, who uses a Fuji or two with adapted Zeiss Contax lenses from the film days. Every shot is manual focus, manual exposure, manual white balance and no IBIS because it is shot from on top of a tripod. At first, I thought every shot was being done by an instagram boyfriend, but no -- all tripod selfies by her. She also uses a drone. She has 584,000 subscribers, and her latest video from three days ago has 524,000 views.
Reverend Al - do you happen to have a link? I've watch many of her videos, and I've not seen where she talks about her camera gear. I'd be interested in how she describes it and which drone she is using.
@@gympoole I found a Q & A on her Instagram page. She never said anything about her drone, as far as I remember.
Back-litten (another awesome Canadian word!) -- doesn't the Fuji have an exposure compensation dial somewhere with all of those dials? Just up the exposure 2 stops with a flick of the finger -- no touch-screen menu needed!!!
It does.
Yeah, it's in the same spot as Sony.
Dear professional: I'm currently on an Canon EOS M3 (with kit 18-55, 28mm and 56 sigma), I'd like something pocketable to bring around more often and take precious moment of my family to look at when I'm old and bitter. Do I just sink more money into the M system with the 22mm toneh 2 or just go all out with the Fuji 100v? I like that the Fuj makes me look like hipster and I only shoot jpgs to begin with (and short videos), but on the other hand I'm not feeling the autofocus is a major improvement on the M3...I'll buy I t-shirt for your help, do you ship to Italy?
nikon z fc ….
My lil G9 would track those creatures no problem, they might pulse like a heart beat but they will be tracked. Cheers 🍻📸.
Hate is such a strong word. I was watching this video while enjoying a nice refreshing sitz bath, feel so much cleaner now. My XT-3 suits me fine for wildlfe and moving aircraft stills, using the 100-400mm or the 55-200mm lens. I dont shoot video much at all, if I did i suppose I would buy a camcorder! In the three Fooj cameras I have owned, I have never had one card or lens error, I must be doing something wrong?
I'm on A7c but I still have fuji f30, about 8 years old, the battery lasts a long time, the photos are much better than with the phone camera .. only video is vga.
Great lens :)
I’ve always loved the look of Fuji cameras, but that’s really the only good thing they’ve got going. I guess that’s the most important thing in the end, but if you have a hard time getting a finished product it just might not be worth it. Ryan Booth is probably my favorite regular Fuji user and I’m always impressed, but I dunno how he does it. He must be exceptionally patient.
I know the wildlife conspiracies channel is already out there on UA-cam somewhere. It better be.
Camera Conspiracies GONE WILD! 👍🏻
5:07 your nailed it. There really isn't enough reach
When do we get "Wildlife Conspiracies"?
That woodpecker is money
It says a lot about how much I trust it but I’d rather film an event or paid job than vlog myself with the fuji. Between bad af, focus breathing, even when sitting still in my office just put it on manual lol sitting still is too difficult for it.
This years XH2 is make or break for fooj. Even as a loser photographer I’ll admit the AF is just okay at best. Definitely unusable for consistent vlogging and video.
And the manual focus peaking is terrible. You can’t see what it’s telling you is in focus.
I'll wait xh2 and the others (xt5, etc) so you'll sing another song.
I remember your Fuji (hate/love) journey, from Fuji ninja assassin then you get xt4 yourself, sing the heaven song onto it, then you sell it after the AF lets you down.
I tried once to to vlog with a jurassic Fuji X-T1 and 23mm f2...it was impossible, then I switched to the 15-45mm plastic Fuji toy and was a bit tiny slightly better, but I had the worse nightmare of my entire life!
After that vlog I sold all my Fuji gear to buy some Sony stuff and now I have way so nice dreams at night, definitely Fuji is not for vlog at all...
I like the Velvia for nature and wildlife, very strong colours, (but if you use capture one you can change it in the edit to whatever film sim you like). The autofocus is a bit risky, so I rarely use it, but if you do it's best to set a range limiter for a window of focus to stop it jumping to the background or if you don't want it to focus on branches or grass etc that's close.
Nikon get the phase-detect autofocus quickly because a few Nikon 1 series cameras had on chip phase detection auto focus... way back the last one was the J5 and they officially killed the line in 2017.
I'm a Sony monkey and recently had the opportunity to use a fooj and I agree, the image looks great and I'd argue they have some of the best looking camera bodies in the game, but what a clunky bag of dicks all those dials are.
Love your videos, have a good one mate 👍
As a fooj lover I’ll have to agree my dials just sit pretty on the top while I use the regular command dials. If I’m feeling spicy I’ll switch the iso dial to the base iso in good light.
I have a same feeling with Sony, bad ergonomics, poor weather sealing and build, alse colors and horrible service keep me away from it.
What drives me nuts about fuji:
When you completely manual expose, and then zoom in/out ...you'll still get that horrible exposure stepping.
And for video, that's unforgivable on mirrorless. It reminds me of how Nikon DSLRs did Manual video...
That’s a big one. Of all the lenses I’ve tested only the 50-140 doesn’t behave like that. The 18-55, 16-55 and 10-24 do that.
@@MelvinGarcia Yes! Exactly what I found as well.
I thought there was something wrong with my 16-55 and brought it back to the store because it was doing that. The fact it wasn't doing it with the 50-140 was what lead me to believe something was wrong with it.
Amazingly, the guy at the store told me to shoot everything at 16, then just zoom in/out with keyframes in post. What a disgrace. And, as you know, that's one of their premium lenses.
ugh.
Yeah that is bad. There is one work around for it:
- set your aperture (F) to the AUTO
- set shutter speed and iso to manual
- click the AE-L button to lock the exposure
- then you can change the aperture with the ”exposure compensation” wheel but it does not change it automatically
- don’t set aperture fully open but f3.2 and more works with f2.8 lens
- Now if you zoom the problem does not exists 🙂
Btw. I would recommend to program the AE-L to some function button. Also helps if you set the AE-LOCK mode to ”switch” to the settings. Then need to click it only once.
@@mitrihakkinen6498 ah neat. yeah, that does work. thx.
Is that all shot hands held?
Yes.
That autofocus would drive me NUTS.
The Fuj standard LUT is same as provia, but just provia
I'm not leaving flat when it's below zero degrees Celcius, especially with my camera gear...
Woo hoo!
I can see why you became a vlogger instead of a wildlife photographer....
I once had a old guy get on my case that I didn't buy a Fooj and I just looked at him and said Why? Sony a7iii was the greatest first camera of all time
Yep manual for Fuji video.
I still have trouble coping with how to interact with random people who walk up and see me with a camera in hand aiming at a bird and ask “Are ya filming son?”.
“Clearly, sir”
Just wear the largest pair of headphones you can find. ;) You can even cut the cord off because people will think they're bluetooth. LOL
If the new AF technology is not improved significantly on the next gen of cameras, then Fuji won't be able to capture the young public ever.
For sure.
Their lane really does seem to be hipsters taking street photos.
These young folks need to know when it is best to go manual focus^^
@@ralfjansen9118 haha, in the immediate gratification world we are living, well I highly doubt, that's the reason I'm pointing out for them
@@ryanhoviolin i agree that people are getting lazier and expect the gear to make everything for them, i don't like that, but autofocus is a must. I create a lot of videos, commercial, fashion, food & product, also cinema. When you are doing paid work, with models, big teams, every extra hour costs money, so you cannot risc bad focus. Yeah we also have AC from time to time, but not every client has budget for a focus puller, so you need to make sure the autofocus is spot on. It's ok to use manual focus when you are passionate about photography and take shots in your leisure time, but professionals need good reliable machines. One friend shot weddings with only manual focus lenses a whole year, and he destroyed his eyesight because of this. I did not think that is possible, but it something to think about. And congrats to you if you can accurately focus a 1.4 lens, my favourite lens used to be a manual 35 f1.4 lens as well
does a vlog about Fuji's colors, goes to a place with only brown things...
Damn it, this lens so unparafocal. It hurts
Cons: No interesting full-frame lineup between aps-c/gfx and bad autofocus. Pros: everything else!
8:00 is that a new song?
Yea, still working on it.
Hey I know this is somewhat random, but I was hit up by someone in a canon group saying you might be interested in a canon eos r w/ 35 1.4. I have one, so if you are interested please let me know if you would be interested!
Do you live in Canada? How much?
@@cameraconspiracies I’m in Michigan. $2000 USD for a EOS R, Canon Battery Grip, LPE6NH + LPE6N, Canon ef-rf adapter, Tamron 35 1.4, and 1/4 tiffen BPM.
Ouch! Watching that woodpecker gives me a headache!
I got the XT4 to Vlog… curses!
My Olympus fanboi friend says you are wrong about Olympus at telephoto lengths. He insists it’s superior to Fuji. He’s very upset that you slighted his system.
And now I'm afraid of bald eagles.
95% user error, but entertaining video.
Fuji won't release luts, it would be releasing their recipe and giving away for free the thing they are known for. You have to BUY a fuji to get fuji JPGs. People copy t hem but they don't have the exact recipe.
4:44 a proof that Fuji cameras are good for filming censored content.
Also the rolling shutter is bad, seeing wavy branch footage is weird and distracting.
“…the cinema was ours.”
Dude, I'm pleased you are getting more into wildlife videography / photography. May I make a suggestion regarding gear?. Get another G9 with a Panasonic Leica 100-400 lens, you will be impressed by the reach, you will never feel inadequate again in the woods or elsewhere. Vlogs are possible from at least 500m away, but I'd recommend something a bit more wide angle for that like the DJI Osmo Action 1.
It’s very jittery, is there no ibis?
They ought to put a big knob on the lens to let you adjust the focus…
Sorry. I love my X-T4 despite the spotty AF. Never had a lens error or ANY errors or freezes of any kind. Maybe I’m just lucky…
I think it's OK to admit that you made a mistake in selling that X-T4. Come back Kasey. Your Fuji-loving fans will forgive your transgression.
After a long battle in the worst AF competition, most of which had Panasonic in the lead, Fuji has finally pulled ahead and has now won the worst prize. Fuji needs to hang its head in shame now that they have now become the standard that makes Panasonic AF look good.
& this is explains perfectly why my Fuji kit sits in a bag in the corner. Well done showing it.
Yes, 70-300 is not a vlogging lens I suppose 😂
i hear the 2022 look is going to be a macro shot of vloggers' left nostril
My man...the best wildlife setup is - Pany G9 or GH5 with Leica 50-200 2.8-4. Dual IBIS and IS lock. Are you kidding me? Just came back from vacation with the most ridiculous monkey and sloth footage.
Don't forget the worst Auto function of Fujifilm: Auto white balance. Everything else I can kind of forgive, but AWB ruins every image.
Dial in that kelvin like the film days. You've got to choose like it's Daylight, Fluorescent, or Tungsten balanced.
Sure but it takes 10 seconds to set custom WB with a gray card. The camera can store 3 custom WB settings so when I’m hiking I just keep a card in my back pocket and set WB for bright (out in the sun), dark (under the tree canopy), and save the third for anything in between where I’ll set the WB right before the shot.
Ohh my, the Angry Photographer will be pissed by this video. Fuji autofocus sucks. Comm'on Fuj!
