[Obsolete] Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2: Answer - Combos and Setups

    Take this as the revision of my first Answer video (on Rev 2 Demo).
    I guess one big difference between Answer and other set-up characters is that Answer is the actual one attacking, which could put him in very dangerous position once something goes wrong because he will be in close proximity with the opponent. He doesn't seem to have powerful normals to rely upon either.
    Anyway, I still really like this character and had much fun with his combos.

    Combo Notations:
    It may seem a bit messy because of the types of inputs Answer has...

    ↙ ↓ ↘ = 1 2 3
    - = gattling (e.g. P-K-S means pressing P, K and S consecutively)
    xx = (special) cancel
    jc = jump cancel
    j. = jump/in air
    sj. = super jump
    ad = air dash
    iad = instant air dash
    ~ = cling onto scroll
    { - } = Savvy Ninpo / press button when on scroll
    For example:
    - If a sequence reads “ j.H~{9D}~H ”, it means: after j.H connects, cling onto scroll, hold direction 9 and perform the {D} attack, and end with the follow-up H attack;
    - If a sequence reads “ {6D}~{6D} ”, it means clinging onto the next scroll right after the first {6D} attack and do another {6D}.
    Note:
    - As long as Answer is in the midst of a Savvy Ninpo attack, the directions within the curly brackets are ALWAYS the actual directions and NOT the directions relative to where Player 1 character faces. This is because there could be a lot of side-switching in air.

    Remarks:
    For command throw mixup, if you as Answer do not know which side you are on, you can choose to input 2K as →↓↘K or ←↓↙K and press 5S/2S at your usual gatling rhythm. Say, if you input →↓↘K and the opponent appears on your right, the game would recognize the command throw; if the opponent appears on your left, it would simply be 2K-5S and such.

      His design concept is dope. I wish they'd enhance his dash attacks off the scrolls a bit.

      Thanks for watching. I think his IAD ground combo got changed in Rev 2.1
      The others should(?) stay the same

      Oh, and yes I agree he hasn't seem to be good or easy to use... Unfortunately. I really like his character design tho

    I picked up ggxrd w answer and honestly that’s the main reason I’ve stuck with it. Still, these combos are way beyond my expertise

      Answer allows for a lot of creativity. Keep working on it! This video is way too dated btw

    Why did they nerf Answer he was even that good to begin with?

      Its a mystery. They were trying to make him more "consistent" I guess by buffing scroll combos and getting rid of his IAD loop but instead what happened as a result is his scroll combos are as good as they should've been to begin with while still being somewhat hard to confirm and he has absolutely no grounded combos. Then they abandoned REV2 to work on other projects and so here is Answer's rather sad state

      You can still use them but I think there are better ones. Say, check out those Yabu uses in matches: keeponrock.in/#/?p1=Yabu&page=1

    Is he friendly for a beginner? I think he is relying on his cards to do good combos? he needs to set up those cards first before doing a combo right?

      By "cards", are you referring to the floating scrolls or the business card he throws out (at about 00:24)? If the scrolls, you can always set them up amid a combo after 6K. Character weight will affect the follow-ups, but the combos at 00:01, 01:43 and 00:55 pretty much have the general ideas covered .
      If you mean the special move 236S/H where he shoot a business card onto the ground and can summon a bunshin out of it later, that's more often used as a confirm into RC and follow-ups.
      Other than that, he can also do ground IAD combos.
      I don't think Answer is beginner friendly (I would recommend Sol or Sin), but there's always a grinding process when picking up a new game with a bunch of mechanics, so I'd say just stick to a couple characters that you find interesting as you improve.

      His only reliable combo option without scrolls or cards is probably IAD ground combos, which can end with a 2D for hard knockdown and scroll setups.
      Sin does not have complicated mechanics, and he is a very strong character.

      Y. Xiao Nice thanks. I got last one request may I know whats the annotation of the first part on 0:11? It seems close range S but there something more and how u do the IAD on the ground? Im sorry im newbie

      That's first hit of close 5S canceled by 6P canceled by close 5S again (first hit) and canceled by 6P again, and then far 5S into 5H. (5S-6P-5S-6P-5S-5H)
      IAD is normally entered as 2956 or 956.
      2956 is slightly faster because you are doing a super jump. Your character can start air dashing being closer to the ground, allowing some of the tighter IAD ground combos to work. You can do it by inputting a tiger knee motion (2369), go neutral, and input 6. Doing it this way would also have the 236 motion embedded, making it easier for moves like Baiken's IAD Tatami Gaeshi.
      956 is slightly slower, but it still works for a few characters' IAD ground combos. Also since you can't do a super jump for a double jump, 956 would be enough for air combos (like most of Millia's).

      Y. Xiao Aww man, that sucks. I spent hours trying to do them.
      Oh well, not gonna drop him. He is my first main in Xrd, I love him so much. The scroll combos are so much fun

      Yea that nerf is super unnecessary considering Answer was not a strong character to begin with.
      The scroll combos and mixups are indeed very fun!

    In the 2nd combo do you have to super jump cancel the 5H into IAD?

      Super jump cancel into IAD is definitely faster than normal jump IAD. You probably do not need to super jump if it's still in the early part of a combo (with more hitstun)

      Super IAD is way too hard for me to handle. Is it an absolute to essential to learn in order to play answer effectively? BTW thanks for the quick reply.

      The trick is to slightly delay the super jump input when 5H connects off a gatling string. That may be his only meterless ground combo option without using Savvy Scrolls.
      But then again, Savvy Scroll is a good enough combo option if you find IAD a bit inconsistent. I think Answer is more about mix-ups after one knock-down instead of massive damage off one combo.

      I'm primarily a tekken player and this is my first guilty gear(in fact this is my first 2d fighting game that I want to get good at).There is hardly any beginner level data available for any character other than maybe sol.Anything I look at is some crazy option select character specific stuff.I really like this character and I have no idea where to begin.Just did all of his trials and practiced the combos in this video(except the two against ky and zato).

      Tekken! I probably should pick up Tekken someday. I have zero experience in 3D fighting game lol.
      You will be more comfortable with the movements in this game as you play along.
      In this game different characters have different weight class, so certain juggle/aerial combos may only work on a part of the roster. But if you are comfortable with the other combos I have here, I think you'd do fine. It would be learning the mechanics and match-up from there onward.
