18 Cacti That Will Blow Your Mind! | Rare Cactus Unboxing

- G'day, guys! In today's video, I chat with you about my recent deep dive into the unfathomably deep rabbit hole that is cacti... I unbox 18 rare and strange cacti that I purchased from Spine City and Succerland recently.
Many of these cacti are on graft, which is a really interesting way to speed up the growth of your cactus collection, after all, it can take decades for cacti to size up when hard grown.
Some of the genera of cactus include:
- Copiapoa
- Gymnocalycium
- Astrophytum
- Ariocarpus
- Thelocephala
- Neochilenia
- Stenocactus
- Turbinicarpus
- Mammillaria
- Eriosyce
- and more!

Loving the Cacti content 👌🏻👏🏼
:D
Normally don’t watch hour long planty videos cause I get bored. However you young man are very charismatic and could watch all day. And before anyone jumps to any conclusions I’m old enough to be your mother 😜😂
Great video as always Pete actually liked all the Cacti you purchased. Was the root stock all the same cactus apart from the long one?
Me as well,im 62 and retired and I love watching and listening to Pete as well.He could talk about almost anything and I would watch.
Thanks Kathy and Alice. I really appreciate the kind words and support you've both shown me and the channel :D Definitely obsessed with learning new things and then sharing what I've learnt. So glad it's interesting enough to watch an hour of haha
If I may be so shameless, if you want to hear me rant and rave about stuff related to Australia and the news, I sit down with my father and do podcast episodes on my English podcast. The series is called 'The Goss'. You can find it on the Aussie English Podcast here - podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/aussie-english/id1089059076 and on my website, you'll see the back catalog of Goss episodes here - aussieenglish.com.au/the-goss/
This is my day job lol So, I've been talking people's heads off for a while now haha. The only warning is I'm pretty much an open book in these episodes re: my opinion on everything, so you might end up learning too much about me and not agree with certain things. haha
Omg I didn't know this-I STARTED LISTENING--YAY!!!!!!
@@alicelarez4311 me too Alice lol
haha hope you guys enjoy it! My dad's a riot lol
Peaches is just smacking mice while you gab on about plants!
Great video! I'm midway through... Twenty years ago, I started with succulents, which were hard to find in my small town area. I had a ton though and very quickly migrated into cacti instead. They were my main jam for quite awhile. Cacti are still high on my list even though I got into houseplants about 15 years ago. I will still snatch up a unique one if I find one! Most of the Cacti I have are the same ones I got long ago. Unique ones are still hard to find around here unfortunately. My pride and joy one (unknown species) is big enough, he wears a human size Santa hat for Christmas! 😆 Anyway, super enjoying your videos, definitely including this unboxing!
I never tire of “ learning” about different plants…I never want to limit my knowledge
True that!
I started out collecting cacti and succulents but kinda lost interest when I got into hoya and aroids. I think it’s about the growth rate.
But I’ve bern thinking about getting an Euphorbia obesa or a Pachypodium again.
.
Yeah, I can definitely see that being a factor. The flowers are amazing though... It'll be interesting to see how I go re: my interest considering the slow growth rate. There's definitely something to be said about aroids and new leaf appreciation haha
@@petevsplants7516 Let us hear how it goes 🤩
You remind me of when I first discovered Tillandsias. I was so intrigued that I have close to 50 in my collection. I have 3 cacti & 6 succulents. However, aroids are still my first love. I just find that plants are so different…even in the same species; there’s always interest in watching them grow…even if they’re slow & prickly. Congrats & good luck on your new found love.
Haha yeah, I just go where the wind blows me I guess :P Tillandsias are amazing :D Thanks mate!
Love my cacti, my favorite are peyote, so adorable with their little tuffs. Toothpicks are fantastic for pollenating, currently have over 100 babies growing up in my window.
Oh man, I just got a package today with 5 different species in it. They're gorgeous, but I hear like Ariocarpus, slow as hell to grow.
Mate! I’m with you, I have over 500 plants and it’s 50/50 cacti and aroids! I’ll post a video soon Of my collection but I like what I like. 😂
Haha it's a bit like that
Hi Pete, do you like lithops?
Yeah, definitely keen to learn more about them. They seem so strange. The old and large clumps look amazing!
You must’ve needed the sleep.
lol I always need sleep... :P
I've got my eye on a Echinocereus rigidissimus, the Arizona Rainbow Hedgehog. I was never that into cacti but that one is really cool looking and has beautiful flowers.
Oh man, i've been hunting one of those for a while now too!
And the trouble begins… you’re gonna be telling us you’re adding on greenhouses to “accommodate your plants”. 🍿time *goes to watch for more chuckling fun*
Lol yeah... about that!
As you get into the cacti just a suggestion, I use regular surgical gloves when handling mine to re pot. They don’t jab through them and it allows for better dexterity without having bulky gloves on.Can you give any suggestions on how often and how you go about watering your cacti?
Oh very clever! I'll have to give that a try int he future. Thanks! At the moment I'm watering them about once a week-10 days. I'm still learning what works for the plants I've got, but the good thing is if you err on the side of underwatering, they tend to bounce back quickly as it's what they've evolved to do. Overwatering on the other hand is a quick way to kill them.
i really love cacti, but really only for their aesthetic. They aren't super rewarding since they take soooo long to grow. Also you dont have to do muchj to care for them, which i guess for a plant helicopter parent that gets boring lol. Although, when speaking about being rewarding, one of the best things about cacti is when they flower, sooooo amazing! but has only happened for me once or twice.
Hehe yeah it's definitely the plant hobby at a different pace
I'm for sure more invested in aroids but I live in a high altitude desert like climate so I've collected some cacti and succulents because...dry climate! Our capital city Botanical Garden has a spring sale every spring that I've gotten some nice specimens from
Yeah I'm so jealous of the north American climate for cacti, not to mention the fact that they're native there!
Tongs work well with cactus , just means you will have to raid wives kitchen...opps
Lol may have already done that...
Next hoya or the non vegan carniverous plants ? Next to aroids and succulents (i love lithops ) those are ones I am getting into as well. I dont like the grafted look though, would it work if you burried the bottom part totally? Also you wouldnt be able to see if the grafted one was poached because the roots are cut of. I need a loads bigger house ;)
Good question, re: buried the root stock. I think I've heard people saying eventually if you leave the scion on the top for long enough it'll just grow all over it / push out pups that surround it or you end up just raising the soil level. It'd be interesting to see what on earth goes on root wise if that happens. Like do roots just pop out of all the areoles (equivalent to nodes in aroids) on the cacti? The grafted plants definitely look dumb lol but I guess it's a means to an end.
Thanks dude, for pushing me down a rabbit hole 😂😂😂
Hehe you're welcome :D
I'm here primarily for the cacti & succulents, appreciate the aroids though
Yay! Welcome, mate :D
Took me 3 days to finish this video lol. Never been into cacti but they're very interesting indeed u're making me wanna go read lots about them.
Hehe glad to hear it. Which of the ones you saw in the vid tickled your fancy?
omg you are describing my life. i'll just lie down for a few minutes, i have work to do, and then next thing i know 4 hours are gone.
Yeah, I know... brutal
Love the long form stuff! Keep talking and we’ll keep listening!Just turned 50 last week and at midnight I’m drinking a beer and listening to you! So just so you know 20 years from now you can be doing the same thing. Only I’ll be 70, drinking a beer and listening to you at midnight!!!
lol 14 years... haha :D happy bday mate!
Welcome to the world of succulents. I’ve been collecting and growing them for over 20 years. I am just getting into aroids and I have stayed away from Anthuriums and Alocasias because I have been so spoiled with the care required of succulents. I know their limits and it matches my personality. They thrive on neglect. Anthuriums and Alocasias scare me haha
Lol yeah, I know what you mean. I'm probably going to kill loads of cacti and succulents from over-care because of aroids...
Some other really cool cacti: Eulychnia castanea, Lophocereus schotti f. monstrosus, Tephrocactus geometricus, Astrophytum capricorne niveum, Hylocalycium chimera, Ferocactus histrix!
Admittedly, whenever I killed a cactus, I killed it within a few days 😂 Especially with overwatering they turn into mush very quickly. Somehow I also managed to underwater a cactus once and it literally started deflating. It was hilarious to look at but luckily I was able to bring it back with a good watering. Cacti are great and in my experience pretty fast growers as well given the right care!
Lol don't do it dude... Alright, added to the wishlist. lol. Lol it's interesting you mention the deflating thing. Apparently, it's something quite a few cacti do during winter to bring them closer to the ground (stay warmer) and obviously manage water loss. Pretty interesting.
@@petevsplants7516 That's fascinating, actually! Mine did it in summer, so it probably wasn't that, but I should start checking if any of my cacti do it during the cold months. 🧐
I'm a big fan of succulents but I avoid cacti because I don't like getting poked. The only one I own is a variegated prickly pear that doesn't have the prickles. I like touching my plants
I like having a big variety in my plant collection. That's probably why Hoya is my favorite genus. But I try to have a little bit of everything because it's fun to experience new plants
Haha yeah focus on the inermis ones (no spines). Turns out there're loads of mutant cacti species with no spines hehe
@@petevsplants7516 cool! I had no idea! I think you've just caused a new problem for my wallet 🙃
haha you're welcome :D
Have you ever mentioned you have adhd? Because you are just like me 😂
Lol could have...
I’m into it! Any weirdo plants, I’m all about it.
Hehe yeah pretty much. Weirdoes are winners.
Love that S. lancifer. Now I want to buy some cacti 😳
Check out Roraima Nursery in Lara if you're nearby.
You should get the roadkill cactus,it's pretty cool
I'll have to google that :P and chuck it on the wishlist haha
Too funny. “I’ll be watching you” really is a stalker song. I always laughed when ppl dedicated it as a romantic song back in the old days on the radio. 😂
Pencil is great tip. Co-sign on that. Markers failed me for years. I’ve stepped my label game up. Aluminum tags for outside plants/trees. Print vinyl labels from maker on the pots for indoors.
Why did I think Thanos! When you rocked that glove? All you needed was a snap!
Yeah, I never realised either as it's normally in a major chord pattern and sounds so happy, but the minor version is creepy as. And respect re: aluminium (you misspelled it :P) tags. Do you do the full hammering out of the letters on them?
😂That was a life epiphany for me. I'm a Realtor IRL. I had a client from the UK looking at investment properties. We had a good 10 min debate as to how each of us (US vs UK) said the word wrong. I was on the "where the hell do you get the extra letters?" and he was team "Americans don't use all of them". Hillarious once we realized our countries spell it differently.
Unfortunately, no don’t stamp. I use a pen and just print on them. They are very soft and easy to write on. Crazy, before I never cared so much about labels until I started getting different blueberries 🫐. I couldn’t look like an idiot when friends wanted to trade cuttings. Saying “yummy big blueberry” just doesn’t cut it. 🤪
I am currently obsessed with cacti and succulents and have added a ton of them to my collection as of late so this video was right up my alley!
Wow! Nice work. Which ones tickle your fancy?
I’m obsessed with Astrophytum and mammilaria in particular but I also love any cactus that looks furry or unusual!
Dammit Pete. Just when I stop spending money on plants, now I drop $75 on a variegated euphorbia just to get a ticket on the crazy train.
Bahaha... Yeah those variegated Euphorbia ammaks are so nice. Assuming that's what you got?
It’s the lactea I believe. A nice foot tall one with a couple of the classic cactus arms
Omg peaches has so much personality 😍
Yeah, she's a massive handful lol feisty as!
Can we please get an aeroponics update soon😅😅
Hehe about that. I took everything out recently as it was overrun with algae. Potted everything up or put it into prop boxes, and bleached the crap out of the system to hopefully start fresh with no algae soon. Will try to update on things soon, but they're all going well once out.
With no offense Pete but we are not here for cacti but rare aroids 🙈
Hahahaha better skip this video then mate
Another Aussie I can follow ! 🙂 Do you know Sydney Plant Guy ? I follow him and Kylie and Bruno who are card makers, another hobby of mine. I was bitten by cacti back in the early 1970s when still in high school. Most of the plants I have now were newly purchased last year. Have gotten through the winter with only one casualty (a Dykia). I have several starting to flower now and others coming out of winter dormancy. I live in Wisconsin USA near lake Michigan. Happy growing !!!
Hi!!!! I just came across your vid even tho its a year old. The whole reason i clicked on it cuz I saw the magic word - "Cactus"❗❗❗ Cactuses are the ONLY plants i do. I have about 300 of them & steadily growing! I dont do aroids & monsteras & all that other fancy stuff like everyone else seems to be into. I got into cactuses just about 2 years ago, before then i didnt think plants just wernt my cup of tea. But cactuses have a whole different appeal about them! They are a symbol of strength & endurance! They also teach us that no matter how tough life may get-- the desert storms, the rain for days & days, the predators trying to devour us or a cacti, the cacti just keeps on pushing through! They only get tougher through the hard times! Heck, they can be beheaded & they can grow back not just 1 extra head but sometimes 5 extra & more!!! When i grow up i want to be a Cactus!!!!
I enjoyed watching your video, but i probably never seen u b4 before because u do all those fancy pants plants. The foo-foo plants lol, but i personally would LOVE to see you do more videos about cactuses!! You seem like a very intelligent man, getting to study biology in the past, was that what u said?!! Very intresting. But regardless, whatever u decide to do or other vids to make, i wish u the best of luck, Loads of subcribers & have lots of FUN!!! Thanks again for the fun vid! Was nice to "meet" ya😊
Sincerely, Anita
If you like “alien rocks” you’ve got to check out lithops. They’re known as split rock plants but my 4 year old calls them butt plants 😂
Oh yeah, they seem epic. Another rabbit hole...
Lol prolapse plants
@@petevsplants7516 😂
🐈 + 🌵 + 🍺 = ❤
Hehe my kind of person :D
Potted cactus without there pots are surprisingly pretty light. My big ones outside in the ground are just the opposite, it’s hard to believe how heavy they are. There’s a popular post card from here in Arizona of a Saguaro that fell and crushed a car.
Maybe you’re allergic to beer 😂
lol good god I hope not
Great video! I love my Hoyas and philodendron, but cacti have been my recent obsession lately as well. They are so weird and unique.
Hi Pete from Dublin Ohio.. I too love cactus .. Use to live in Phoenix Arizona and fell in love.. Now I have some of AZ. in my home ..
Also love euphorbias. Good luck on your cactus venture.
Man I get serious envy with you guys over in the US and your cacti, nurseries, and natural environment! Cactus Quest is a great channel that tours these places and is so nice to live through vicariously haha
The desert is a beautiful place. Very beautiful when cactus are in bloom and you get to see all the beautiful flowers which doesn’t happen very often. But living there I was blessed with seeing it. Love your videos long or short. Learn lots of stuff from you.
My plant collection actually started with cacti and succulents! I’m obsessed with the rare versions that have unique colors and shapes.
Hi thank you so much your video just help me a lot because I just got a lovely cactus by mail and was wondering if plant and water or just let him heal for some tine thank you your video it’s great!
Hi i have just come across your UA-cam channel i am in tasmania and i grow my cactus from seeds i am in to astrophytum and gymnocalycium from and ferocactus and mammillaria i love seeing what come from seeds its new year eve
Cool plants! The containers are looking a bit large for some plants though, maybe?
I can confirm this, don’t water straight away, if you can avoid having the soil in contact with the flesh of the cactus this is a good way to prevent rot, this can be done by putting a 1cm layer of grit on the top of the soil
Easy to get sucked in to other plant varieties.
Those cactus look interesting, but spikes are not for me.
Air plants on the other hand.....
lol yeah, wait until you find the cacti with no spines...
@@petevsplants7516 don't tempt me 😂
Come on....
@@petevsplants7516 🤔😂
That “ nap” was needed!
Sing it sister...!
Crystal fairy and the magical cactus
Cacti sucked me into aroids. Lol look into Pereskias ;)
Hehe guess we've had the opposite journeys then :D
@Pete vs Plants I started out with temperate trees and garden plants. I was an avid naturalist and birder. Had a few of the basic houseplants, but didn't really get much into them, Christmas cactus, spiderplant..that's about it. Did my horticulture studies and it at least opened my eyes but, I still preferred trees and such . Worked in garden centres and ground crew for an arborist.
I didn't really know how to approach houseplants because they were all assorted tropicals or cacti. 8 years ago, I moved to the Northwest Territories, but just before I did, I got the cactus bug with some Rhipsalis, an opuntia and some aloe. My plant addiction had started. Then I moved and had nothing for a bit. I overwintered a few peppers for the fun of it. Chilies got me wanting houseplants again, so I started watching planttubers and thought about getting some cacti. Desert Plants of Avalon and Cactus Caffine were my definite favorites and showed me the basics. Started ordering seeds from ebay and online. Carnivorous plants came in there too and that's how I got hooked on aroids. I wanted something other than a green pothos, a rhipsalis and Thanksgiving Cactus. Now 3 years in, I've got about 150 plants, 37 cacti and succulents, 19 carnivorous ( pinguicula and nepenthes) ll, 17 Hoyas and the rest are tropicals
Wow what an amazing journey. It's always interesting to hear how others got into their plants. Lol to be honest, the first thing to hook me was something you're not allowed to grow (or smoke) in most of Australia... After I started growing my own supply I kind of lost interest in smoking and just wanted to grow out the different types of plants and watch them flower. Fast forward a bit and I got the house plant and now cactus and succulent bug lol
You're going to have fun with cacti and succulents, especially when you start to grow some from seed.
I have a more of a scientific appreciation to my collection as well. I was/still am that little science geek, the natural world still fascinates me in my 40s. I actually got hooked into some aussie natives for a bit. I got curious about the cold hardy gums and bottlebrushes and just how cold hardy are they during lockdown, lol. Lol, forgot about my little stint running the town indoor garden for a season to try to bring some fresh produce options for the community. Now it's just little plots
Great thing about being Canadian, it's legal here *puff puff pass*, lmao
Great video Pete, glad to see the love of cacti on your channel. They're just amazing forces of nature, true survivors.
You need to get a booby cactus next, or there are 🍆 cacti as well 🤣 somehow I think you'd appreciate those 😆
Have a look at aloe as well, so many colour combos, shapes, and sizes. As always, a fun and informative watch.
Sending well wishes from the 🇬🇧
Lol... I've seen those a few times and the little eye on them really freaks me out! Yeah, some crazy Aloes too... gah so much to learn about :D
Lots of cool Cacti 😍💚
Hehe cheers, Sherry! You a cacti lover too?
@@petevsplants7516 Yep!
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii looks beautiful especially with the little blotches of pink red. When it comes to plants with me I really don't care what it is so long as I can propagate it. The propagation of plants has always been so freaking fascinating to me.
Yeah definitely one of the most intriguing parts about the plant hobby for sure!
💚🌵💚
:D
The paint brush to clean them off is the best idea!!!!
🐸🧦
Great video Pete!
Cacti have some of the most unexpectedly beautiful flowers
Thanks, mate. Yeah, I definitely had no idea prior to diving in.
Hopefully you're not allergic to the new plants! Not interested in growing cacti myself but they are fascinating!
Hehe yeah, it's the dust in the soil mix that got me. Did it again tonight... dammit! And they are definitely interesting :D
❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Watching you un-wrap your new haul...... I get the cacti thing, I recently purchased a blue torch cactus. It is super stunning. I desperately want a spiral cacti. The more the freaky the better. Enjoy.... So avoided any kind of prick joke. ❤️🌵❤️
Oh man, those are gorgeous cacti. I'd love a spiral one too, but they're insanely expensive here.
@@petevsplants7516 expensive here in the UK to... A must for summer though. Just started carnivorous plants from seeds. Third week in the fridge another 2 weeks to go and starting some others from gemmae. Loved the vid..
Oh wow, they start off in the fridge?
@@petevsplants7516 yep. Forced winter conditions to rid the seed of external wax, in moss in an zip lock in fridge. Kids think I've lost it, new dinner dish lol. 🤞🤞 I'll have a decent sarracenia in about 2 years. Another waiting game.😴🙄
they all look the same 👀
Haha it's a bit like that
War of the Worlds..! A favorite ❤😁
Yeah I need to go back and rewatch it.
