This is a brand new discovery - the existence of the fabled 'Super Standard.' To fully understand this guitar and it's condition, please watch the video on this guitar. I will briefly describe it here as well. If you enjoy the finer things in life - these are for you. Functional pieces of art...and History!
A 'The Les Paul' is the fanciest Les Paul to ever walk this earth. The flame is crazy on these guitars - on the top, back, sides and on the neck. However, the key thing to know is that they still had mahogany cores. Towards the end of the run of TLPs, they started running out of the wooden appointments so there were a few 'left overs' that Gibson needed to do something special with.
In steps the super custom! The Super Custom (official name Les Paul 'Limited Edition') was Gibson's answer... or so we thought. There were around 31 super customs made. They are just like a TLP, but they don't have wooden parts (except the first one made had wooden binding.) They have the flame maple surrounding the mahogany core and they had necks from left over 25/50s. These are spectacular guitars are nearly impossible to find for sale. Neal Schon of Journey played one of these extensively and can be seen in the 'Anyway You Want It' music video. They were made in late 1979 and 1980. There was also a second run (less than 100 made) in 1984 due to Journey's popularity. This was a Japan market exclusive. The specs are a bit different, but the 'mahogany core' concept remains the same.
Now, I've spoken with the currently owner of the first super custom made... and I know it's serial. This guitar I'm calling the 'Super Standard' predates the first Super Custom by 3 months! This was likely a prototype for the Super Custom. However, once finished, they saw that with all the binding they might as well made it a full blown 'custom' model. This is my theory. I've never seen another Super Standard, yet so I'm inclined to believe - if there are anymore out there- that the numbers of these produced are very low.
This guitar has a 5 piece maple neck with wickedly wide flame - a body surrounded in crazy flame and the same mahogany core as the Super Custom and The Les Pauls - this 'mahogany core, surrounded by flamed maple' is the key characteristic that sets them apart from all other Les Pauls. The Super Custom and Super Standard were 'leftover' parts guitars. The Super Standard has the same pickups, TP-6 Tailpiece and neck as a 25/50. This means it has Series VII "Super Humbucking" pickups. These are coil splittable with a factory coil split switch (the same type of switch found on the Les Paul Artist.) The bridge is a rare-for-this-time-period Gibson ABR-1. The fretboard is ebony and the inlays appear to be abalone. The headstock veneer is the same type used for the crazily expensive L5 Citation models with Abalone Gibson logo and Flower Pot Inlay.
This is a spectacular piece. It shows wear and tear from being played and the condition can be seen in the video. The worst of it is a small ding on the volute and at the top of the headstock. Other than that, you just have light polishing scratches and finger smudges as well as a few dings on the back. If you collect rare guitars, this is the one for you.
The case for this one is extra special too. It is styled after a 50s/60s Lifton case. This is the first Gibson case I've seen from this time period with a yellow interior. It compliments this finish very well. The outside of the case looks just like any other 70s/80s Gibson case.

Others have said it before, but man, I love how thorough you are on the Gibson lore. It really makes these videos special.
It makes me angry im poor :( ugh i better become a rockstar. Idc about fame or living the lush life. I just want a 59 burst. 51 goldtop. 61 les paul(first sg) 66 princeton. 60s plexi. Bluebreaker. Super. Deluxe reverb. A 64 strat. An esquire. And i want one of the first martin d28 made. Ugh. I NEED IT ALL. Plus a billion other amps and guitars and pedals
Hey Trog
Im proud of you. Your playing is getting better.
Congratulations!
Love your show.
TAKE CARE
Why not get ahold of the guys at Heritage Guitar and ask them. Never seen anything like that anywhere. Another great video. Thanks!
Since I first started watching this show, your playing is getting better and better
I am so envious of you, man. I have had a few Gibson LP's but I'm starting to buy late 80's Japanese Burny's because they are way more affordable. And honestly the craftsmanship is amazing.
The flame on that Super Custom is insane!! Thank you Austin, you always find us the best guitars to look at ;)
Wonderful video. Gorgeous guitar, and I enjoy your in-depth breakdown on these rare Gibsons. Coil tap aside, looks and sounds great!
I am watching your older videos!!! Awesome!! Love this Guitar!! Super Flames!! Thanks Trogly1
Beautiful figuring on the top.
The coil split was unique.
That thing is just gorgeous. Wouldn't have thought that Norlin would have something so nice slip out the door.
Thank you for presenting this guitar Mr Trogly
Very cool guitar Austin.
Thanks.
I need this guitar in my life. ..
"These eyes...cry every night..." Nice. Always love a Guess Who reference.
You should make a book of all the guitars you have own or review, all the models of Gisbon would be so cool
I saw Neil Schon use that in an old video when I was in high school back in 2006. I’ve wanted one of those ever since.
That flame looks epic as you move the guitar in front of the camera. The difference between a good flame and otherwise is how it moves in the light and so many guitars meet an injustice with stills instead of moving B-roll
Man this is an incredible guitar! I absolutely love it
A great find my friend. Very nice indeed
I'd rock it! 15:02 Too Late For Love. I think I'm gonna go watch some old Def Leppard videos now.
Its a shame that guitars are so expensive on Brazil, our national guitars arent that good. I love Les Pauls guitars and im looking forward to getting one. Keep showing us great Guitars, great job man, this Super Standard is beautiful, would love to get one, guess i'll start saving up money for one of these.
Beautiful guitar. How do you find these? Btw, could the case be for a 70's SG? I remember seeing a guy with the same case but he had an SG. Great show. : )
Best sounding guitar yet. Idk if its your improved playing or what, but very very good
Definitely a AAAAA flame top! This has to be the best-looking Les Paul I've seen next to the purple Bats In Flight LP Custom. I'll take this single-ply binding over the multi-ply on this axe!
What a cool guitar! Nice job educating us on these. I noticed that you are leaving your SNARK tuner on the head of the guitar. I just bought one of these and actually read the little manual that came with it. They say NOT TO LEAVE them on the guitar as you can damage the finish.... I don't think they would include that if it had not happened.... Great channel. Keep it up I love the guitars you dig up and share.
I got the supersnark ss. Love the little bugger. What is the battery? One of those lil roundy one's they use in wrist watches? My lighting is getting low, imagine I could be due for a change.
Good video. Good work.
The natural color on THE Gibson! Beautiful!
That is one gorgeous git fiddle!
Beautiful guitar... Yea.. 3 pieces of maple and 2 strips of walnut..thats 5 when I went to school!😄
What a BEAUTIFUL guitar!
Norlin were sure fond of raiding the parts bin ... but wow ,when they did good stuff, they sure did ! Beautiful guitar but I don't like that vile mini toggle that looks like it fell off an 80's Japanese Westone ,and with it engaged it sounds horrible ! Great video as always , thanks 👍😀🎸
I loved the fact that they had volutes. I wish Gibson was still putting them on their guitars today.
That's the switch I was trying to describe on your ES-347 video ... those were used as coil split switches on the later ES-347s, positioned near the pickup selector ... :)
Kieren Moore ...Yes, you’re correct. They also used them on my ‘87 and 2013 Les Paul Lite models... :)
Flamey goodness! That is one beautiful guitar and probably my favorite of all the guitars you've shown in your videos recently. Serious case of GAS ensues...Thanks Austin!
Gorgeous finish
Bozz Scaggs played one of the super custom in the late 70s early 80s on the album, the one after silk degree
Long live Steve Clark. A musical genious.
These are some beautiful Les Paul guitars! And yep, it's a coil split. I love coil splits!
I really dig that coil split sound! It's so thin and crappy - but fits that Zepplin tone for sure, and I could see Jack White rocking out some Raconteur riffs with that tone!
Her strut is an awesome riff.
Trog, I don't even like Gibsons that much,,, more of a Fender strat guy... But I gotta tell you that I absolutely appreciate your knowledge and the vids you put up. Thank you for your burning love of Gibson and Les pauls. Your videos are fantastic and i watch them all. Very much appreciated. I kinda like that larger block of binding on the lower horn used to hide the laminated maple. . OH and why is that bridge so fricken high. Is it set up right. Just looks extra high to me... May just be the way I saw it. That 5 piece neck is gorgeous as are the fret markers.
it's a wonderful day in the neighborhood!
Excellent review !
beautiful.
Hi just wondering if you've ever come across a 1980 Les Paul Deluxe natural finish. I unfortunately lost one at a show I was playing on Halloween of 2005 it was my first guitar I loved it I planned on keeping it forever but little too much to drink that night. Somebody ended up leaving with it and I was never able to figure out where it was and the rest is history. It would be nice to just have a look at one again thanks
Do you think the TP/6 tailpiece improves tuning stability? My nephew had one installed on his ‘04 Gibson SG Special. And I have never noticed any tuning issues, where as lots of people complain about it? That’s the only thing difference
Nice guitar..these super standards & Customs ..I now see where Gibson got the idea for those early Supreme models from..
Gorgeous !!!
It sounds like heaven!
Can you do a Howard Roberts Fusion? My very fav Gibson. It too had the TP6 tailpiece.. but. man what a great instrument.
my epiphone has the same kind of flames as this one but the color on this one is so much better
What’s your opinions on ESP LTD branded guitars? If you like Gibson SG series guitars than I may have something interesting for you. The ESP LTD Viper series. It’s basically an SG with a full scale neck and EMG-HZ pickups. I dunno may be interesting for a “Would you rock or not” vid. Anyways keep up the good content.
This "Standard" is probably my favorite "Super"...except for Steve's wine red Super. That wine red really makes that one stand out. Although, one thing I'm not sure I care for on ANY guitar ; the wood hardware. It always just looks clunky to me.
Beautiful guitar, but you're correct, Austin, about the split coil sound. I used to own a '79 ES-335 (dark walnut finish) with a coil split switch on the treble horn, and I never used it, because the sound was anorexic.
Man. That must have been a beautiful guitar. Im on my second LP now. First is a deluxe goldtop. And now a bfg. Surprisngly its one of my favorite LP ive EVER played sounds incredible and plays amazinggg. Need the fret ends files. Bit sharp but thats it. But im getting a es 345 next and a es les paul. I love the 335/345s. And i just found out the es les paul is a real thing ans boy its sexy in a bourbon burst
Stunning!!! I have an ice tea Les Paul it's a fantastic finish
That's a beautiful guitar!
Now that's a purdy geetar! Why are you selling it if you have your own personal collection? If it truly is a one off wouldn't that make it THE most unique guitar in your collection? I don't believe I would part with it...nope no way... Another great video!
What a beauty, it is a shame the tuners placement are not equal, i have seen Gibson do this mis-hap a lot in older guitars. Just look at the b-string washer on the headstock, it is nearly into the binding, not the worst i have seen.
You mention the volute saving the headstock and that reminds me of a question I have: Have you, or any other collector/owner of several guitars, come across many/any Gibsons with broken headstocks that had *maple* necks?
I've seen a few - definitely not as common though!
3 piece neck & on headstock 2 wings glued on. 😊
While true... then we'd call all necks 3 piece haha
Correct me if I'm wrong, that would be a 5 piece maple neck including extra wings on the headstock.
Wow that neck!
Wicked Nice Guitars !
these super models are so much nicer to look at than 59 pauls.
The coil split sounds awful.
Terrible in fact !
Series VII pickups, while coil tapped, are an 'acquired' taste haha
sounds as there nothing in, clearly waste of money ,still a nice guitar and not that powerful .as expected
Tbh I think the switch just looks good.
@@Trog I can't believe it survived intact. 16 year old Me would have torn it out or replaced the pickups.
I absolutely love that headstock inlay. I thought they only put it on the L series jazz boxes. How much? I don’t know why. But I’ve fallen in love with that guitar. It’s even got coil split. Is your website the same name as the channel
reverb.grsm.io/79SuperStandard
hi any info on a custom deluxe les paul wine red ?
What a beauty
Such an AMAZING guitar...but honestly for $20k, this guitar is just waaaaaay way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range. =(
Would it be worth the investment to get TP6 Tail Pieces for my Les Paul Tribute and SG Faded and if I did should I also get locking tuners for it or would it be ok with the standard Klusons on it? My guitars play pretty well in tune and have good tone but would this give me an upgrade in reliability, tone etc...
The TP6 is a waste of time, but is pretty. It’s the same as a regular bridge except you can “fine tune.” It will do nothing to improve tuning stability nor would locking tuners be needed
Thanks...I'm glad you clarified that...I would like something that helps me to tune less not just change where I tune...
You are a Les Paul library fascinating stuff.
I Love this review you are amazing I thank you very much ! I have a question that Gibson amp could you give the name of it ! I wish you would do a review on that amp !
Gibson Super Goldtone GA-30RV
Somebody needs to explain that tailpiece to me. I've seen it on a few 70s-80s Gibsons, but never really understood why they chose it over the usual stopbar. Does it have finetuners like a Floyd Rose or what are the black knobs for?
Yes, they are fine tuners. While, yes, they do work, they are more so for a fancy aesthetic
They actually work very well. I know a few guys with tuning OCD and they swear by TP6s and have them on all of their Gibsons. They're not cheap either.
5pc neck , including the wings on the headstock, .... and is this thing rattle, sizzle sound ,,, like fret attention may be order or the bridge is LOW ??
can somebody help me about a certain les paul im looking for?
What is binding made of?
Kosztowal w NY 330$. Obecnie cena to 2500$,
It's really 5 pieces
3 pieces of maple and 2 pieces of ebony (or rooswood).
Walnut
The super standard actually has 5 pieces of maple in the neck. You can see a slim wing of maple at each side of the Headstock
If we're being picky, those are technically on the headstock... not the neck, and then every gibson would be called at least a 3 piece neck haha
The Trogly's Guitar Show yes I agree, but I think that’s where the name comes from. Nice guitar in any case. Cheers
Would look better as a basic custom model blocks on neck
Ah, 1979, the year I turned down a '59 paul. Yea, I know...but I wanted a maple neck like that...never got one.
TheDogpa Doh ! 😫
Ouch
Wish I could afford that bad boy!!!
So late 79- early 80, definitely Nashville factory? Was the KM Les Paul the last LP built in Kalamazoo?
Also, please do the world a favor and disable that coil split switch! Hahaha!
Beautiful guitar! Had an Electra decades ago that was almost the same color!
No, the KM was far from the last LP built in Kalamazoo - that is just misinformation that was spread. KZ made Les Pauls do get more rare in 1980-1984 though. This is a KZ made guitar
She's gorgeous.
15:02 anyone know what song that is?
so much flame if your house was burning down you wouldn't be able to see it to save it :D
I have the exact same guitar only different
Use the bridge PU in single coil mode with a beefy greasy FUZZ pedal!
A les Paul I actually like very nice.
Dang I want it
For $15,000 you can
no price. or should i say did you profit? that guitar sounds and looks like a piece of art.
Who are you and how do you have some many holy Grail guitars? I'm new to your channel.
I must be weird - I'm not really a fan of stripe-y bursts. A bit like the abalone, I find it 'a bit much'/busy ... ?
I still appreciate them as beautiful instruments/objects, but have never sough them out to buy/play ... maybe on some level, I think they're too nice to play?! :P
they can be pretty but are they practical. i prefer my plain top burst gibson les paul it is at least different from the norm
Exist - I prefer more 'plain' burst tops, too ... but I can't see how the striped tops are any less practical? :) Just different 'flavours' ...
Kieren Moore me too
Best looking I've seen.
5:32 Duuuuuuude, you just answered your own question. How much is 3+2? It’s 5 - thus the 5 piece neck... :) ...onwards...
15:20 Def Leppard? “Tooooooo late.....toooo late....toooo late. Too late for loooove!,” .... solid.... \m/, ,\m/
24:00 Ohhhh ohhhh .....EDIT that’s a 7 piece neck Trogly.. The head stock has ‘wings’ .... LOL (but they still call them 5 piece, as wings are standard on all ‘Standards’) :)
It’s referred to as a 5-piece “maple” when it’s only 3-piece maple, and 2 walnut, that’s what he’s saying
Where's the dot in the i in the yellow The Les Paul
this is nice..how much is worth?
you need a fender twin to do that thing proper my man
needs EMGs and a floyd rose :P
How much would the bridge and tailpiece sell for on their own?
70s ABR-1 ~$150
TP-6 Tailpiece ~$100
The Trogly's Guitar Show Thanks!
