This is a brand new discovery - the existence of the fabled 'Super Standard.' To fully understand this guitar and it's condition, please watch the video on this guitar. I will briefly describe it here as well. If you enjoy the finer things in life - these are for you. Functional pieces of art...and History!
A 'The Les Paul' is the fanciest Les Paul to ever walk this earth. The flame is crazy on these guitars - on the top, back, sides and on the neck. However, the key thing to know is that they still had mahogany cores. Towards the end of the run of TLPs, they started running out of the wooden appointments so there were a few 'left overs' that Gibson needed to do something special with.
In steps the super custom! The Super Custom (official name Les Paul 'Limited Edition') was Gibson's answer... or so we thought. There were around 31 super customs made. They are just like a TLP, but they don't have wooden parts (except the first one made had wooden binding.) They have the flame maple surrounding the mahogany core and they had necks from left over 25/50s. These are spectacular guitars are nearly impossible to find for sale. Neal Schon of Journey played one of these extensively and can be seen in the 'Anyway You Want It' music video. They were made in late 1979 and 1980. There was also a second run (less than 100 made) in 1984 due to Journey's popularity. This was a Japan market exclusive. The specs are a bit different, but the 'mahogany core' concept remains the same.
Now, I've spoken with the currently owner of the first super custom made... and I know it's serial. This guitar I'm calling the 'Super Standard' predates the first Super Custom by 3 months! This was likely a prototype for the Super Custom. However, once finished, they saw that with all the binding they might as well made it a full blown 'custom' model. This is my theory. I've never seen another Super Standard, yet so I'm inclined to believe - if there are anymore out there- that the numbers of these produced are very low.
This guitar has a 5 piece maple neck with wickedly wide flame - a body surrounded in crazy flame and the same mahogany core as the Super Custom and The Les Pauls - this 'mahogany core, surrounded by flamed maple' is the key characteristic that sets them apart from all other Les Pauls. The Super Custom and Super Standard were 'leftover' parts guitars. The Super Standard has the same pickups, TP-6 Tailpiece and neck as a 25/50. This means it has Series VII "Super Humbucking" pickups. These are coil splittable with a factory coil split switch (the same type of switch found on the Les Paul Artist.) The bridge is a rare-for-this-time-period Gibson ABR-1. The fretboard is ebony and the inlays appear to be abalone. The headstock veneer is the same type used for the crazily expensive L5 Citation models with Abalone Gibson logo and Flower Pot Inlay.
This is a spectacular piece. It shows wear and tear from being played and the condition can be seen in the video. The worst of it is a small ding on the volute and at the top of the headstock. Other than that, you just have light polishing scratches and finger smudges as well as a few dings on the back. If you collect rare guitars, this is the one for you.
The case for this one is extra special too. It is styled after a 50s/60s Lifton case. This is the first Gibson case I've seen from this time period with a yellow interior. It compliments this finish very well. The outside of the case looks just like any other 70s/80s Gibson case.

That flame looks epic as you move the guitar in front of the camera. The difference between a good flame and otherwise is how it moves in the light and so many guitars meet an injustice with stills instead of moving B-roll

What a cool guitar! Nice job educating us on these. I noticed that you are leaving your SNARK tuner on the head of the guitar. I just bought one of these and actually read the little manual that came with it. They say NOT TO LEAVE them on the guitar as you can damage the finish.... I don't think they would include that if it had not happened.... Great channel. Keep it up I love the guitars you dig up and share.

Thank you for your burning love of Gibson and Les pauls. Your videos are fantastic and i watch them all. Very much appreciated. I kinda like that larger block of binding on the lower horn used to hide the laminated maple. . OH and why is that bridge so fricken high. Is it set up right. Just looks extra high to me... May just be the way I saw it. That 5 piece neck is gorgeous as are the fret markers.

Hi just wondering if you've ever come across a 1980 Les Paul Deluxe natural finish. I unfortunately lost one at a show I was playing on Halloween of 2005 it was my first guitar I loved it I planned on keeping it forever but little too much to drink that night. Somebody ended up leaving with it and I was never able to figure out where it was and the rest is history. It would be nice to just have a look at one again thanks

It’s basically an SG with a full scale neck and EMG-HZ pickups. I dunno may be interesting for a “Would you rock or not” vid. Anyways keep up the good content.

This "Standard" is probably my favorite "Super"...except for Steve's wine red Super. That wine red really makes that one stand out. Although, one thing I'm not sure I care for on ANY guitar ; the wood hardware. It always just looks clunky to me.

Beautiful guitar, but you're correct, Austin, about the split coil sound. I used to own a '79 ES-335 (dark walnut finish) with a coil split switch on the treble horn, and I never used it, because the sound was anorexic.

What a beauty, it is a shame the tuners placement are not equal, i have seen Gibson do this mis-hap a lot in older guitars. Just look at the b-string washer on the headstock, it is nearly into the binding, not the worst i have seen.

Would it be worth the investment to get TP6 Tail Pieces for my Les Paul Tribute and SG Faded and if I did should I also get locking tuners for it or would it be ok with the standard Klusons on it? My guitars play pretty well in tune and have good tone but would this give me an upgrade in reliability, tone etc...

    • @Trog
      @Trog  5 років тому

The TP6 is a waste of time, but is pretty. It’s the same as a regular bridge except you can “fine tune.” It will do nothing to improve tuning stability nor would locking tuners be needed

So late 79- early 80, definitely Nashville factory? Was the KM Les Paul the last LP built in Kalamazoo?
Also, please do the world a favor and disable that coil split switch! Hahaha!
Beautiful guitar! Had an Electra decades ago that was almost the same color!

No, the KM was far from the last LP built in Kalamazoo - that is just misinformation that was spread. KZ made Les Pauls do get more rare in 1980-1984 though. This is a KZ made guitar

    I must be weird - I'm not really a fan of stripe-y bursts. A bit like the abalone, I find it 'a bit much'/busy ... ?
I still appreciate them as beautiful instruments/objects, but have never sough them out to buy/play ... maybe on some level, I think they're too nice to play?! :P

they can be pretty but are they practical. i prefer my plain top burst gibson les paul it is at least different from the norm

Exist - I prefer more 'plain' burst tops, too ... but I can't see how the striped tops are any less practical? :) Just different 'flavours' ...

5:32 Duuuuuuude, you just answered your own question. How much is 3+2? It’s 5 - thus the 5 piece neck... :) ...onwards...
15:20 Def Leppard? “Tooooooo late.....toooo late....toooo late. Too late for loooove!,” .... solid.... \m/, ,\m/
24:00 Ohhhh ohhhh .....EDIT that’s a 7 piece neck Trogly.. The head stock has ‘wings’ .... LOL (but they still call them 5 piece, as wings are standard on all ‘Standards’) :)

      It’s referred to as a 5-piece “maple” when it’s only 3-piece maple, and 2 walnut, that’s what he’s saying
