📚 Description: The La Tosca Exclusive double cut is actually a pretty important piece of Gibson history. It paved the way for fancier double-cut Les Paul models such as the cult-classic Spirit model and was an exclusive, USA-made guitar for the Canadian market by La Tosca music. The specs are quite unique to this guitar so I hope you enjoy getting to learn more about this model that hasn't been well documented for the public to see - until now!

Love those TP6 tails… like a top hat on a tuxedo!
Hey Austin I was very inspired by that video with the DC bass/baritone conversion and ended up doing a similar conversion to an Epiphone Thunderbird Goth bass. Set it up with active 7 string bar magnet pickups. When I get the fit and finish done I’ll send in some pics. I bet some of your viewers would rock it.
Thank you for the video.
@@house-o-twang 👀
This is my favorite kind of episode where Trogly talks about and demos a special guitar from the past. That's how his channel began and I think these are the most interesting kinds of videos he does.
Agreed!
Those tp tailpiece are hot trash man. Abe Wechter and Marv Lamb saw the writing on the wall by 1980. The guys who stayed at heritage were stuck with piles of that awful Schaller hardware. Good news swap and it fits a tailpiece that doesn't look like 😬😳
Agreed!!!!
Then he tries to sell it for 30k 😂
Reason I watch the channel !
Hey Trogly! I am from Montreal, Quebec and have been a customer of La Tosca, a mythical guitar store which sadly closed
in the late 90's.. Guy was a salesman there and was also a member of TheBox, a popular canadian band in the 80's and 90's. Guy is a great guy and was a salesman in that store. Beautiful axe!!
My eyes nearly popped out of my head when you pulled that beauty out of the case! I went into salivating mode when I realized it was a double cut away. Oh, if I could only taste it.
I seen BB King do that in his act. What I mean is he changed his e string after he purposely broke it while playing on a bend. He whipped out another string. Casually applied it to his guitar before the second solo.
He was amazing!
Awesome ❤️
Rly
Why did BB purposely break strings?
La Tosca was right where I live! They were huge in Montreal!
Bought my first guitar at LA Tosca when I was 11 at the time it was located on st Hubert in mtl . By the time I was 17 we saw these guitars on stages all over mtl. Cool part of guitar history
Sell it to Norman's so we can hear Lemmo play it. Love this one! P90s FTW.
🤟
This is a Very Nice Guitar, one of the Last ones Probably, From Kalamazoo, Norlin, Before they moved to Stashville, and started cutting corners, My Uncle worked in the Original Factory in Kalamazoo, for 25 years, he did Not want to move to Stashville, so he stayed at the now Heritage Guitar Factory in the Original Building, He still works there, and i go see him at work and bring him Lunch, I Get to go and see Heritage Build Guitars all the time, This is Great to see,, The SMELL OF THE OLD FACTORY IS IN MY BLOOD, Rock on, Cousin Figel
What a beautiful guitar ! ..those 1970s P-90s sound great !
At first I thought that case was hideous now I’m starting to want one
COUNT TROGULA
I really like this guitar... By the way, I´m a Hamer fan.
I own a epiphone tak matsumoto double cut away! I believe epiphone made them 2014 only! Ebony board, Gibson pickups, great tuners. Blk with gold hardware! Very nice!!
That’s one of the coolest Gibsons you’ve had in a while. Wow that thing is beautiful a double cut with p90s that sound amazing and that beautiful top. 😮😍
Models like this one always remind me of Chris Hayes, former guitarist of Huey Lewis & the News, who had several different Gibson Spirits, including that XPL with a Kahler and Eplorer headstock 🙂 And great to see a bit of Hamer content! I once owned a 'Steve Stevens' model (very much inspired by the Gibson Melody Maker, with Floyd Rose and HSS pick-up configuration) and an Explorer-shaped 'Blitz' bass. They made some nice stuff, when it comes to US-made 🙂
Stunning guitar! Reminds me of the Yamaha SGs in the 70s. Trogly should definitely try the Revstar 502T: dark green with P90s, mahogany body with a thin maple top, rosewood fingerboard. Think he'd like it!
bam
You know, I’ve owned a lot of guitars in my life. Not all the guitars, I’m not an expert, but I’ve owned Carvin, LTD (EC256, EC1000, PC-2V), Paul Reed Smith (custom 24-08), Ibanez Premium, Fender USA, Fender Mexico, Taylor, Chapman, Aria Pro, Bc Rich, Yamaha, but my Gibsons have always been my favorites. I can’t get past the feel of a Gibson. The sound, they feel like a true electric guitar. No other guitar compares to me. I’ve currently got 3. Gibson Les Paul Traditional, Gibson Flying V faded, Gibson Firebird V, and a 70’s Explorer on the way. Used to own a 2015 Studio I wish I kept. All amazing guitars, not perfect, but better than the rest.
Hit the nail on the head.
Definitely one of the better sounding guitars I've heard in a while.
All sounds the same through UA-cam compression
P90’s are the top.
@@andy_182 😔😔😔
3:09 OMG Top KEKQ moment there with Mark in red shaking like crazy. 😂
That bring me good memories...La Tosca was a music store base in Montréal,sadly they close...This guitar have a great tone!
TP6 tailpiece is not a bridge but you already know that so it's all good!
One of my favorite guitars is my Hammer dc. Sounds and plays amazing for a early 2000s inexpensive guitar
I love double cuts especially the Les Paul 120 Anniversary with Les Paul style horns with bindings. Ocean blue heavily quilted, hmmmm.
Go to middle position, drop both volumes to about 6 1/2, and drop the tone on the bridge position to around 5, and the tone on the neck to approx 6 1/2. It’s now set up perfectly for some funky blues riffs!! With P-90’s you can get the greatest variety of sounds. ALL GREAT TONES!! Great guitar. I want one, but it has to be the tobacco sunburst.
One of the nicest double cuts I've seen.
I LOVE WHEN TROGLY REVIEWS DOUBLE CUT SPECIALS❤️❤️❤️
I’m not a big fan of the clear guitar bodies but those pickups look soooo cool without the covers. Seymour Duncan should make clear hot rails.🎸
As a French Canadian, I have to admit, I'm rather impressed with your pronunciation of the name Guy Brossard. Fun fact, Musique La Tosca has since closed its doors in Montreal, Perhaps losing out to Steve's music shop which is located not very far away from where Musique La Tosca was located, but worst, there was a Big box music store called Archambault Music, which opened up a few blocks away and that was probably the last nail in the coffin, however, Steve's music shop is very very well known which is probably why its doors are still open today.
at least steve's is a good store though
@@Weaselboy Indeed, it is where I bought my first guitar, still has that old general store feel to it, creeping floorboards and all lol
I always thought Steve's Music was in Toronto? Do they have multiple stores?
@@martb8022 Possibly, it's been in Montreal for as far back as I can remember though.
@@martb8022 - Steve's was started in Montreal but has had a Toronto store for ages. Their Ottawa store has been around for a while, too. They now also have a store on the South Shore, specifically in Greenfield Park, and another in the West Island, specifically Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
You got me laughing Trogly!! The Mark Agnesi overlay when talking about Hamer guitars!! Didn’t see that coming lol
A 78 DC like this would be a bucketlist item for me. Birth year..
Thx Trogly!! Great guitar, great episode. Truly love the Gibson history lessons, always informative and entertaining. That guitar sounded great too!!🎸🤘
Absolutely stunning! I love how the maple top is almost holographic when you move it in the light. I would buy this DC in a heart beat.
Gorgeous guitar! Sounds like it coaxed Edgar Winter Group riffs from Austin, although he changed it up before the video got blocked.
My favorite show!
Didn’t expect the Johnny Thunders shoutout, super cool!!
Love when you find something obscure and not-so-well-known to show us. Love learning about stuff I didn't know existed.
this absolutely has killer specs. the brass nut. The p90s. The clear bobbins. The bridge. The ebony fret board. The mother of pearl. lotta cool stuff here even with a thin veneer.
I love Gibson dc’s and p90s. Wish I had that one right now. Been playing my LP with p90s and love it, but that sucker is 10.5 lbs
I've got an R-6 LP custom shop with P-90s and a SG special with P-90s and a DC with P-90s. I'm hooked.
Love that board... gotta be oh so smooth.
Some cool axe this one is...I absolutely dig it.
Now I know where Rick Beato's got inspiiration for his own DC Signature model...
🤟Rick B. Is awesome
I love this guitar, the moment I heard that cleans. This ones a keeper.
I came across one of these with one of the most beautiful tops I’ve ever seen for $950. Shame it was sold already 😢
Gibson should make a model called “The Fluke”
Lol 😅
8:06
Dang, that's a really nice looking guitar and I love the big volute. I wish Gibson had kept putting them on their guitars, would've saved players a lot of teardrops, headaches and money, plus they're very attractive attributes to the guitar's overall aesthetics.
I'm a big fan of the Washburn Wing Series, very similar to all the double-cuts like the Hamer.
Thanks for doing this! Good command of facts. You convey informed appreciation of unique era.
The funny thing about that guitar was when you were running through the clean tones the sound of music from the 1970,s was pouring out of that guitar Chicago, Steely Dan ect. not sure why but that's what my ears picked up love those Norlin headstocks 👍🤘
Thank for the information, again. I’m totally ignorant, I thought the DC Special and Hamer were different guitars. I thought the Hamer Sunburst was the first in ‘77, and the Spirit after that and then the Santana. But looking at the actual shape of the guitars, you’re right. it’s just a Les Paul DC Special with humbuckers. the reason I and maybe others think otherwise is because of the pickguard and P90’s?Hamer’s claim to fame wasn’t that shape though. when Hamer released their version nobody was making the Explorer (Hamer Standard) with a flame maple top. Apparently back then a lot of people wanted a V or Explorer but the Korina ones were super rare and Gibson hadn’t made any with maple tops yet. So Hamer built the Standard (1976) and the Sunburst (DC shape) with flame maple tops to really fill that gap in the market that their builders saw. It’s not a coincidence that the Explorer II with flame maple tops on Mahogany bodies came out in 1976 as well. Hamer had been showing their guitar for years before they launched it…. There weren’t that many guys at NAMM back in those days, everyone kind of knew each other. so Hamer kind of changed the scene during that time. Seems pretty obvious they inspired the Explorer II, and, they seem to be the First successful company to make it using exclusively Legacy Brand Models (Gibson or Fender Shapes). I think Pensa didn’t start selling until ‘82. G&L ‘80.
Super cool guitar. The main difference about the double cut or Sprit of the 70 is that the neck joint is at 20th fret instead of 22th as the historic or current double cuts
Loving that clean tone.
thats the guitar clean sound ive been looking for all my life
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
I think the neck is amazing. Top looks amazing. P90s are awesome. Sounds great. I love the whole guitar.
Those pickups sound great!
Those pickups... wow! Sounds amazing!
Hey, you must learn part of your opening riff, it would sound amazing on this guitar. I have the Hamer version of this guitar that you pictured, with the P90s in transparent red, it's an 83 lefty. Fantastic guitar!
Man, this thing kinda looks like a PRS Custom 24, a Yamaha Revstar, and a Les Paul got together in a motel room and this thing popped out nine months later.
Clear bobbins rule!! Cool seeing the copper windings. That thing sounds great, the bridge not as thin as some. OD, killer!! Ü
Yeah, I love it too....that part of the video came up as I came across your comment....I was gonna comment the same thing, good stuff!🤟👍
La Tosca Music 1853 rue Atateken Montreal, stores gone , its a small art gallery now.
God damn that finish with the flame maple is amazing!! What would you call that, Tobacco burst? Well it's a very classy finish.
Now this is my kinda guitar. I love this little beauty. P90's & an ebony board... what's not to love?
This is an awesome guitar, one of the best sounding ones you have demo
Greatest test in awhile. Loved tech for many bands: you're awesome
Wow! Love it. Really sounds alive.
I love the rare ones. You forgot about the 2008 Gibson Longhorn. I have one. Number 57 in the cherry sunburst.
I really enjoyed this video it seemed you spent more time with this guitar than you normally do I also have a Les Paul double cut mine's a double cut plus but these guitars that were made back then they hold up they sound great and keep up the good work
I love that one! I have alway's been partial to the special.
What was the Pat Travers double cut Les Paul? I'm pretty sure one of the big US dealers had 25 made,
I blame Trogly for making guitars vintage guitars more expensive 😂 love you Trogly
Just for all your information. You should not use steel wool on any guitar parts use only a brass brush, or stainless steel wool period or a nylon scruffy like you use in the kitchen
What makes stainless steel wool ok and regular steel wool not? I've used regular 0000 steel wool on frets for 30 years with no issues at all.
This reminds me of my 3 79 to 81 epiphone genesis double cuts. Wish they came with p90s
I had never heard of those! As a Spirit and Hamer lover I'm hooked! Wish I had the cash to get one right now because I have a feeling the price is gonna shoot up after this video.
I own an exclusive guitar. It was put out by Long & McQuade in Canada. Mid to late 2000s, Epiphone Explorer Negative series. I don't know how many they made, but I know they made Les Pauls, SGs, and Flying Vs as well as the Explorer. All were white with maple fret boards. Maybe you could find out about them for an episode?
That is a cool run!
Oh yeah
Oah ya
Guess what
You just won the most fabulous Wallmart award for the very first comment wooohooo you are absolutely amazing 🍪
This guitar, to me, reminds me of a 70's SG. I played quite a few of them. :)
Very similar to Washburn Eagle/Falcon/Hawk series.
Always liked this body style !
Nice, light instrument yeah. A lot of sustain. Apart from Hamer, Gene Baker has made some very nice double cuts in the hand-made B3 series. So do Gordon Smith in the UK, with a brass nut as well. The slim taper is a deal-breaker forme... I had a 69' Norlin Les Paul I ended up parting with: too slim and heavy !
4:16, anybody know the make, model, & year if that sweet-looking red PRS?
This thing is some kinda GORGEOUS, AND IS MY FAVE 'pAUL-LIKE' BODY STYLE BAR none! Esp. the weight-relieved ones like my LH Goldie D/C. Love the TP-6 too! Wish they had a belly bevel though.....would take off a few ounces on this anchor!
Love these models.
There's just something about the sound of P90s and add something unique as this guitar. It's a shame it didnt have its original case . I don't currently own one guitar that has P90s but if this guitar or even the spirit would be reproduced in original specs I'd sure be looking at it. That is if I didn't come across one of the two first. I have always been a fan of the Telecaster for its sound and I just like its looks. I recently bought and Ibanez zippered padded case from a guy and he had a Melancon T style which he let me try out. It has an awesome pale blue gloss finish and plays like no Telecasters I've ever tried. Basically would be like playing a high end Tele. When the owner picked up that guitar being that he was friends with the luthier he was shown a guitar that was special ordered by John Oats. Being the guy was friends with the luthier he let him play it before shipping it. If you ever see a Melancon guitar you might want to look into it. They're usually a bit more expensive but from what I experienced and everyone I know that has played one they are well worth the price.
That's one excellent guitar. Those P-90's are so sweet! Are you listening Gibson?
Hamer, yes, but I was thinking older PRS… I would love to see PRS’s take on the TP-6. 😂
It would be nice to see an old Hamer Sunburst demoed. At the time they were highly regarded but lost reputation as they expanded from a small custom shop. I have a New Hartford built Hamer Artist Custom from the mid 2000s which is immaculate but isn't a guitar I love.
Now that is a beautiful guitar.
Wow! That Guitar sounds amazing! One of the coolest Gibson's I've ever seen! I would be proud to own that one!
Have you ever documented an Ibanez Artist 100 ? From my understanding Gibson hit Ibanez hard in a law suite. I have an AR100 and fits perfectly in a Les Paul case. They made in the early 80’s too
Sounds great. Def brass you can hear
HA!! My first thought was is that a Gibson Spirit? 😄 I use to have one between 1991-1997. It was actually a great guitar. I bought it used at a local mom and pop music store for $250! I threw a DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup in the bridge position.
That neck is stunning
I fell in love with that guitar
I really like this. It’s a real stage friendly players instrument.
Trog, any chance of some more Hamer guitars being featured?
Congrats on 200k subs
I remember Yamaha selling double cutaways back in the 70’s that looked a little like this. I believe Santana used to use them.
Dealer exclusives weren’t “birthed” in the ‘70s. Rose Morris and Rickenbacker go back to the early ‘60s.
What a nice sound!!!
