Man, Austin your work ethic and ability to produce interesting videos are second to none. I don’t even play guitar (just bass) but I never miss your show. I hope Gibson and Fender appreciate how you showcase their products, even the odd and unusual ones. Keep up the great work!
I agree. It's weird but the really opulent Epiphone Jazz guitars from the pre Gibson days were the same . I even had a Japanese Epiphone EA-250 from '74 that was plain red all over except the back that was subtly flamed . Never seen anything as glorious as this one though , definitely back to front lol 😂
What a great looking Gibson, not surprising that most got ordered overseas. Really glad we got to see the breakdown. Probably wouldn't ever get to do that! Thanks Trogman.
Turn automatic English subtitles on. Go to 3:10 and pay attention. 3:22 How? Is UA-cam animating subtitles depending on your tone? Edit: I'm an idiot, UA-cam's subtitles were over Trogly's subtitles. It was a nice confusion.
@@keithadams812... Actually, you can take a little bit of isopropyl alcohol or even water, and see what the grain is going to look like. Although, I will say you don't know how stunning a top may be until you get stain and other things that help bring it out. But you can tell basically what it's going to look like. My problem with Gibson is half the time they're offset. Book matching should look like a mirror image.
I like it when the say it is what it is. If I bought an advertised fake, I'd have it marked as such. I'd want it burned inside the pick-up or electronics cavity and somehow stamped in black light ink all in caps, " FAKE " . Just in case a unscrupulous seller tried to remove the inside marks.
Notice that the tailpiece is off center. You can see that the strings "dress left" from the bridge to the tailpiece. The reason.... it compensates for the fact that the neck is not aligned with the center seam in the maple cap. Many Les Pauls have had this problem over the years.
Looks straight too me. Think the angled bridge is buggin you out. “Many of these have had this problem over the years”? Have any pics of yours that have this problem? None of mine do.
I went to your reverb link on this one. Man you really have a great presentation, between here, and there, I have to say hi 5 congrats on all that you do. It truly is amazing and a lot of work to do things as you do. You 'respect' the fact that your dealing with pro guitars, and a certain caliber of clientele, I hope that your influence raises the standards of other sellers, I am sure you do. I would certainly purchase through you before anyone else now, just because of the knowledge/experiance you have gained. But also because of trust factor, that you have built on here (yt). Blessings and thanks for all that you do.
A month or so back I left a comment suggesting looking into getting one of those endoscope camera's and this guitar is a perfect example why! haha it would be so sick to see inside some of these things. Still a great video tho the figuring in these are beautiful
I have another tale to add. The fretboard inlays are called double diamonds. In 2014 Gibson was planning a run of limited edition 120th anniversary (hence double diamond, 60x2) models. In preparation they made a couple hundred ebony fretboards with the double diamond inlays, and a 120th Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. In the 11th hour, good ole Henry J decided that he wanted the 120th Anniversary 12th fret inlay on almost all models. History bears this out. Now they had a couple hundred ebony boards with the diamond inlays that didn't get used in 2014. Five years later they decided to use these boards on the 125th. They removed the 120th inlay and replaced them with a 125th inlay. The run was cut short at 31 by two things. Bankruptcy, and the inability to source anymore of the amazing quilted maple found on these. They still have quite a few unused ebony boards with double diamonds.
You mention an endoscope. I'm thinking for the last few month now, Trogly should finally get an endoscopic camera, it's about time! They are not that expensive any more!
BC Rich used abalone diamond shaped inlays in some of the 1970’s - 1980’s MIA models (they used Brazilian rosewood fretboards as well). I love my 1983 Mockingbird Standard. Gibson did a “one up” by using MOP for the outer edges of the abalone. Those are rad AF! Good episode Austin, you snag all the cool Gibson USA rarities.
I really enjoy your show and was wondering if you've ever done an episode about Gibson venues in Nashville over the years. The receipt at 4:46 that says Gibson Showcase / Opry Mills is what reminded me. My dates & facts may be slightly off...but here's what I remember: Opry Mills was Gibson's combination guitar store and "factory in a mall". Seems like they assembled banjos and did finishing touches on mandolins (scraped bindings etc) down one side of the store under glass. I believe it closed as a result of the 2010 Nashville flood. Gibson Cafe Milano: an upscale jazz venue on 3rd Ave (not far from Lower Broadway) in the late 1990's/early 2000's. Gibson Guitar Cafe: their Lower Broadway singer/songwriter venue...roughly same period as Cafe Milano. It had guitar shaped tables and was located same side of street a block or 2 from Tootsies. You've probably got some subscribers who worked at the above or can offer more details.
@ThatsRaidillonActually i just think that quilt tops are a bit much and doesn't look like wood to me. To gimmicky I never cared for the sunburst SGs of the 70s then those naked SGs from a few years ago looked terrible without pickguards. Something about the SG body shape just shows contours better on solid colors to me. And a carved top on an SG is a no go the body shape doesn't complement a carved top well. We all like what we like but if I made the rules them would be the rules. Oh and no blue les Paul's not so sure why but it bugs me.
I'm a moderator at the Gibson Supreme Owners Club on F/B. We have two members that have these. #18 and #24. Your theory about production being halted prior to 125 units just became more plausible. Our research indicates that Australia got 1,2,22,23,24 and 25. #18 is in the USA.
I always thought they were custom shops too! I guess the little fancy inlays on the headstock fooled me pretty good, I have seen them modified though, Matt Heafy from Trivium used a white one with EMG pickups on it, probably knocked a hole on the back for the battery thingie.
Pictures of the chambering are available on the interweb witha simple search. The gold fretwire is (alledgedly) harder than normal fretwire. And yes, I have a 2011 with Ebony board, 400 inlays and chevron pinstripe top and back in Trans black...It's rather nice.
I have a supreme in desert burst… It’s fantastic and incredibly light. One of my favorites off all time, and I’ve got (and gone through) a lot of Les Paul’s!
Mr Trogly, i love your show but i would love to see some Gibson Firebird on your show, especially the 2015 limited edition Non-reverse model for the japanese market. I read somewhere that those, under the pickguard, have the possibility to be converted to a 3 p90s version
I really hope that you sent the buyer the guitar with the quilted top. It was beautiful, and for somebody to spend that much money he deserves to pick of the litter I know you're a good guy Austin and I know you would do that
I absolutely love the 490R 498T pickups! In my humble opinion they’re better sounding pickups than that of the custom BurstBuckers they’ve been making for their 50’s & 60’s runs. I had traded the only guitar I had with them an Ebony Les Paul Custom from 2001 for a 2007 Custom Shop Custom in Vivid Cherry Sunburst w/black back & neck with BurstBucker Pros (I put a 57 Classic-plus in the bridge) and Sprague Black Beauty/Bumblebee paper-in-oil capacitors. But, I just picked up a 2021 Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White & it has the 400R & 498T pickups in it & I LOVE IT!
Trogs, you need some tats on those meat hooks, bro! Some nice quilt figuring, maybe a nice artists rendition of the Steve Howe guitar right on the forearm? Maybe? Perhaps?
Love my 2007 LP Supreme in Desert Burst! Had my luthier install 50’s Emerson wiring kit with Lollar Low Wind Imperial Humbuckers. It’s been my #1 for over 10 years!
I have a 2010 and I’d like you to add to your collectible list. Gibson Factory was raided (as I’m sure you know) for having sourced ebony wood without meeting the law/standards of import. After that, Gibson Les Paul supreme switched to the Richlite fretboard, making any made with the original (and technically illegal) ebony wood more sought after. :)
More than likely these Gibsons were wired prior to the top going on the guitar. This way there is really no issue or delay in the assembly process. Trying to wire through the hole would be very time consuming. I'm sure the jack hole was made bigger to accommodate future possible repairs or upgrades. Thats just a guess though. Of course now that I think of it, doing the wires prior to the top going on may make it easier, but then you would expect to see the paint spray in the area of the knob posts and switch, unless they cover them somehow. Which I suppose would be easy. If it was something they used all the time they could manufacture something to just go over the knob posts and switch post, prior to spraying, like some sort of premade, prefitted cap.
I really wish the valutes would make a come back. I have 1 guitar with a valute and it isn't a Gibson. A Dean Chicago series ML. I really don't know why I like them, but I do
The volute saved my 80 custom the other night. Had it on the stand next to my chair I fell asleep and at some point bumped it it went face down it woke me up. But it was fine. I never use stands I hang them and ill be damn if the one time I left it on the stand it fell. But its why I bought a nonlin era for the volute. I think 80 was last year for it and 77 to 83 are solid not pancake or weight relief
I died a little when he put the bridge back, the wrong way around. haha The Black and white is 1 purfling, so you have the outer binding, and all the black and whites inner circles, are combined in pairs of 2. So 7 ply binding, is actually 4. 1 outer, 3 black and whites.
I spoke to one of the biggest dealers in Europe and it seems that US manufacturers are about 6 months behind their normal production due to the pandemic. That might be one of the reasons why there is such a gap in the dates between the two guitars. 🤔
I'm sure it doesn't make any difference but I think the first one with the white switch tip was made on the 9th of August not the 19th. At least that's the way I'm reading it.
Super beautiful guitars but that 125 anniversary model is something else again. This Les Paul is absolutely gorgeous. Yeah nice case however a black interior is a let down in my opinion, a nice red or brown etc would have been a better option. Anyway great information regarding this guitar extremely interesting. Thank you 🙏
The binding is a little much. looking at it close up it just kinda makes it look cheaper? Especially on the back where there's a standout black line. Cool guitar though!
Could Gibson have installed all of the electronics before the maple top was glued on? That wrap-around tailpiece high E side is sure alot closer than the low E side...I'm not very familiar with things like this...just asking. Thanks for the video!
I don’t know why this guitar is so attractive, I think it’s the thicker body and the arch back, it’s not even the flame that attracts me! I wish I could have a standard with a back like that! I’m weird hahahahaha

Yeah nice case however a black interior is a let down in my opinion, a nice red or brown etc would have been a better option. Anyway great information regarding this guitar extremely interesting. Thank you 🙏
hey I have a F hole 2014 supreme , do you have any idea how meanly were made ? thanks
I always expect a “Doug Score” at the end of these videos.
I oft confuse engine, guitar and CPU/GPU performance haha. Need a score!
Here are some of the 'quirks and features' of this guitar!
Love long episodes w Gibson history
Ive got a 2007 model love it. AAAA wood is beautiful.
Yeah, that sustain is probably why Matt Pike from Sleep uses Les Paul Supreme guitars. Pretty awesome tone!
That back is out of this world
Holy
498T is one of my favorites...
It's the sound of a Les Paul. Why anyone would swap it for a spikey JB is beyond me.
I don’t know why this guitar is so attractive, I think it’s the thicker body and the arch back, it’s not even the flame that attracts me!
I wish I could have a standard with a back like that!
I’m weird hahahahaha
