Lynette Silver is one of Australia's most renowned historians and writers, her main interest being investigating various aspects of Australian history. In 2019 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours for "significant service to the community through historical battlefield tours and commemorative services". lynettesilver.com/
On 2nd September 1943, the 68 ton Kofuku Maru, a Chinese made junk crewed by men of the Services Reconnaissance Department, the parent organisation of the famed Z Special Unit left Australia bound for Singapore, deep inside Japanese controlled waters. By the time they returned nearly seven weeks later, the crew of 14 had carried out one of the most famous clandestine raids in Australian history.
Much has been written about this raid - codenamed Operation Jaywick and its follow up called Operation Rimau. There was even a mini-series shown around the World in 1989. Much of the information shared about these Singapore raids is either exaggerated or plain wrong. Lynette is here to set the record straight.

Superbly researched episode which does credit to some very brave men .
Wonderful show. Thank you Paul and Lynette. Many myths busted
A privilege to listen to the esteemed Lynette Silver.; great respect and admiration. Appreciate her research and the truth and accuracy that she brings forth.
Excellent show! I was not familiar with this raid but the presentation really makes me want to learn more. I love that Lynette has gone back to the source material and has busted many myths around this raid. I hope Lynette comes back soon to talk about the follow up raid.
This is fascinating stuff given I have just finished reading a book on the SBS whose were among the most successful users of canoes in WW2.
Really excellent. I'm a trainee guide at Changi Museum and we cover this. Moving to hear Lynette's comment on the cost to the civilians. It was grim.
Thanks Liz. You'll have to come on as a guest yourself one day
@@WW2TV Would love to.
My father was on Jaywick's crew Ron Morris he met Lyon at the SOE training school in Singapore. My father was awarded the MM for Jaywick.
Wow, that for sharing
Remembering my Great Grandfather, Claude Armstrong of the Singapore Harbour Board. Died after being tortured to death by the Japanese Kempei Tai in relation to Operation Jaywick at Outram Road Prison. Thanks for the wonderful work.
Thanks for sharing the story and your nice comments
I just commented on another Jaywick video about the local people who suffered torture and execution because of the Japanese belief the sabotage was undertaken by local people
There's a book you might be interested in called "Return From A Dark Age" written by Bill Young a former POW who was imprisoned at Outram Road

We had a family friend who I knew since the 1960s who was a member of "Z Force" and I've met other "Z Force" members
My father would often march on our ANZAC Day behind the "Z Force" banner with his "Z Force" mates
I wouldn't be here without "Z Force"
Silver inaccurately plagiarizes the good work of others
Thank you, WW2TV.
Absolutely cracking! Thanks very much.
Always fascinating. Thank you as ever
Totally new for me Excellent presentation about clandestine missions in the pacific Great show Paul and Lynette
What a superb show. Just managed to catch up with this fascinating tale.
Thankyou for your knowledge and enthusiasm, both of you
Played the last Post at Remembrance Day today (11/11) on the deck of the Krait for the Australian Commando Association - PS Lyn Silver was my Primary School Teacher!!!!!
There’s a plaque at Harbour Front Singapore to commemorate operation Jaywick.
Probably more well known to the English and Australian audience, as an American again one I had not heard about. Brilliant raid, great plan and well executed. Thanks for Paul and Lynette for sharing this story.
Glad you enjoyed it
Z special unit is now australian special air service regiment in Swanbourne perth Australia and my father Dave Roberts was a long distance sniper with the Australian special air service regiment in Swanbourne perth Australia and he was a Sargent and army reservist from 1975 to 1984
Having been to the starting point of this Operation, this has been an absolute revelation! I have always thought of them as "Z Force" but now I know otherwise. Lynette without any shadow of a doubt, knows the facts and her presentation is impeccable. I commend both of you for a great show! Gary/Perth WA
Thanks Gary
We had a family friend a big Dutch fella William "Bill" Shino who I knew since the 1960s who was a member of "Z Force"
I've met a few fellas who were members of "Z Force" including John "Lofty" Hodges
My father would sometimes march in the Sydney ANZAC Day March behind the "Z Force" banner with his "Z Force" mates
My father was one of the six survivors form more than two thousand four hundred British and Australian POWs originally held at the camp at Sandakan, at wars end he was in hiding and close to death in the jungle in Japanese occupied central North Borneo having survived the "Sandakan Death March" and escaping from the extermination camp at Ranau
He was recovered by "Z" Special Force operatives
I wouldn't be here without "Z Force"
Whenever or whoever came up with the name "Z Force" it's what they referred to themselves by and they wore a "Z" association badge and they marched behind a "Z Force" banner on ANZAC Day
When’s the Rimal 1 coming out?
Not sure, quite possibly next year to tie in with the 80th
