  • How to be a Historian - WWII Fake History
    With Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse
    Part of an ongoing series about Historians, Museums, Projects and Content Creators
    • Historians, Museums, P...
    In this show we talk to Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse about how she became a historian, her Fake History book and the phenomenon of myths and fake history becoming accepted as true. We will use a few false facts from WWII, along with some from other eras as examples.
    Did Hugo Boss design the Nazi uniforms?
    Did medieval people think the world was flat?
    Did Napoleon shoot the nose off the Sphinx?
    Spoiler Alert The answer to all those questions is no.
    Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse, better known as The Fake History Hunter, is a widely-recognised historical authority for her work on social media debunking historical 'facts'. For over 20 years, Jo has studied, taught and researched history and is an expert in the daily life of Medieval Europe, life in the 1930s and 1940s, and the history of crime. She has worked as a historical consultant teaching in museums, advising on documentaries and carrying out research for films.

    Excellent talk. The myths of the Luftwaffe drove my research toward exposing its strategic involvement in the Holocaust while also confronting serious resistance from academics and writers who wanted the myths to stand.

    Sure needed this. I wrote a world history textbook when I taught for a homeschool organization. Then when I got my Master's degree I was shocked in realizing I needed to rewrite my book because so much of what I was taught in high school and in my bachelor's degree about history were total BS. Learning so much on this channel. Very grateful. (Yes, regarding WW2 I was duped by Robert Stinnett, Harry Elmer Barnes, Charles Beard, etc. etc.)

      Isn't it more annoying when you realise that your teachers are being taught to teach rubbish, the government body that writes the syllabus tells them to teach it, the exam bodies punish people for thinking differently and the press (looking at you, Daily Mail!) demands that teachers do a better job of teaching that rubbish?
      Don't get me wrong - I'm not a conspiracy theorist - but there's a fine line between historiography and dogma

    Regarding tour guides, they often earn tips based upon *how entertaining* their stories are ... not how historically accurate they are. I usually keep that in mind when evaluating the accuracy of their "history."

    Woody/Jo, What an interesting thought provoking chat. It has been said that the first casualty in any war is truth! That true with today’s conflicts and remains after the cessation of hostilities! Thank you both. Bob

    This is so good because so many people think History is a fixed subject matter and we just have to memorize the facts and we know History. Good to remind people History is fluid because we learn new things which changes what we know and that's exciting. It also is a good intro into sources and that whole can of worms.

      That is revisionism. A word hated by myth perpetrators.
      If new evidence comes to light, then revision of that history is needed.

    Nice to see this show with THE (one and only) fake history hunter -- always like her posts on the socials.
    Another era that has my interest, the later Stuart period (Glorious Revolution, Spanish Succession etc) is also decorated with myths and erroneous gossips held as truth that keep resonating into our era.

    Inspiring discussion. It was a reminder to me to ensure that the sources I may use in the writing of my own book are verified for correctness, not only the textual ones, but the photographic as well. I think there is nothing wrong with using an image that is representational of the subject one is writing about. I must be stated as so in the credits that it is, so that the reader is told the truth.

    Really love your channel. I learned a lot from your Normandy and Italy videos.
    A subject I would like to see discuss would be La División Azul, because they are honestly a very interesting foreign volunteers unit of the German army. There are good books and videos, tho for us spanish speakers, while barely anything good in English language discuss publicly unless you search on the internet.

    This was superb. I frequently come across things related to the occupation of the Channel Islands which are just wrong so I can totally identify with a lot of what was said. Particularly when you point out on social media that something is not quite what it was made out to be and is untrue. Often the author of the original post becomes very defensive and says what do you know about it. Pointing out I live there and I have the documents from the archive often leads to being blocked!

    Thanks for this presentation, it should almost be compulsory for high school history students, people who comment on history on the internet, tour guides, and some very well-established authors!
    I think we in the Anglosphere have the especial problem of British propaganda, as discussed here. Short Napoleon, Galland wanting a squadron of Spitfires, James Cook discovering Australia.... these are 'headline' myths. But there are much more insidious lies: the English 'take' on the French Revolution goes something like "it started off with good intentions but got out of hand and became an out-of-control bloodbath" (subtext: peasants and workers, suck it up because your desire for basic rights will only lead to hell on earth).
    As a colonial, SO MUCH English history about Europe is basically in service of the class system, that about the world in service of justifying Empire. Even today, these foundations have enormous influence (I suspect but cannot prove French and German history is better-placed because the class system is weaker there, though they of course have other baggage). I would suggest this greatly influences First World War history and the barrage of books debunking again and again certain specific criticism of the BEF high command.

    • @johnburns4017
      @johnburns4017 Місяць тому +2

      As kids we were told that only a handful of Oxbridge graduates/rich private school kids flying Spitfires stood between us and and a German invasion, so we should all be grateful to them and the system which gave them privilege. As many know that this was bunkum. It was used to reinforce the class system in the UK which in the 1940s was very strong.
      In the 1960s Tory cabinets were exclusively men from private schools/Oxbridge, yet only around 6% of pupils went to private schools. Harold Wilson came to power in 1964 who went to Wirral Grammar school, an excellent state school. There was ridicule from the Tory media, as he was socially unsuitable at least. Times change and a new cabinet just formed having around 6% privately educated, which happens to be around the percentage of private school kids.
      So will all this cascade how to how we view history?

    Who on the earth in history actually believed that the world was flat? From one online source, "By the 5th century B.C., it was widely accepted that the Earth is a sphere." Is that not true?

    • @WW2TV
      @WW2TV  Місяць тому +3

      Given there is still a Flat Earth society and hundreds of videos on UA-cam by people "proving" the earth is flat, it has not even gone away in 2024. But yes, you are correct that the ancient Greeks were already on board with the sphere concert by the 5th Century. But given humans have been around for 190,000 years or so, people believed the earth was flat, or at least had no concept of it being a ball in space for about 180,000 years.

    How does an amateur historian deal with the situation where the official record conflicts with several eyewitness accounts? At some point do you just have to decide what you believe?

    • @WW2TV
      @WW2TV  Місяць тому +3

      That is a constant problem

    • @dirtdevil70
      @dirtdevil70 Місяць тому +4

      Eye witness accounts aren’t necessarily accurate either. Memories fade, tunnel vision, lack of general awareness of the situation etc can all lead to inaccuracies in eye witness accounts. I witnessed a simple crime, a drunk breaking a window. As luck would have it as I turned the next corner a police officer was there. I gave my description of the baddie , told him what I saw and off I went. 10 minutes later I drove by again and the baddy was standing across the street watching the police inspect the damage…the funny part…the description I had given less than 5minutes prior, and likely 2 minutes after the incident was completely wrong. I personally the baddie, so I was sure it was the same person… from own experience, I’m very hesitant to 100% trust first hand accounts of events. Now if 5 or 100s have similar accounts then the “history” carries more weight.

    I fear this will only increase with AI. I am horrified at the number of "history" sites that are just the robot voice repeating something they stole or copied from some other AI site. There needs to be a green check or verification to show what came from a real historian and what came from a robot!
