  • On this John Ashton Interview: The rise and fall of the Psychedelic Furs and how things might have been different, the serendipitous (and also scary) events that occurred in John's life that brought him to music and to the Furs… hie less than idyllic childhood and how he managed to create a life for himself in spite of this, watching Free, Bowie, and The Clash in concert. John also shows us some of his many cool guitars, Tokyo, doing things at least twice, origins of Satellite Paradiso and TONS of other cool stuff. Awesome, sincere and lots of fun and laughs on this one!

John’s most well-known as the guitarist for The Psychedelic Furs. He was with the band from 1978-2007, playing and writing on all their LPs during this time. Originally from London, John has also worked as a side man and producer, working with artists like Marianne Faithfull, The Sisters of Mercy, Red Betty, and Seven Color Sky. John has a solo project called Satellite Paradiso. The band was touring regularly before Covid and they have one LP out, which is phenomenal. It’s a great example of killer songs, mixed with amazing guitar riffs in the psychedelic / alternative genre

This guy right here is exactly why when I see those pointless “greatest guitarist” lists, I never pay attention to them
    Why?
    Because he’s never on them
John Ashton is criminally underrated and way under appreciated for his ability on the guitar
More people should know his work, he’s phenomenal

I saw the Furs in my hometown of Portland, Oregon in the summer of 1984 on the Mirror Moves tour. Richard Butler was great, and the whole band was great. But the best part of the concert was John Ashton BY FAR. Two things struck me about John that night: First, his guitar playing was a constant flow of creativity. Even when he was playing a "simple" rhythm, he was always bringing something new into the song; Second, he was absolutely BEAMING positivity. Smiling constantly and communicating is love of playing and just being there! Love you John and thank you for all the great music - thinking of you lots during this difficult time.
NOTE: If anyone wants to help out with John's medical expenses, there's a link to a Go Fund me page on is Wikipedia page, click on #8 in the References section.

What a treat of an interview! Been a fan of The Furs for decades now. I've always wanted to hear his point of view on things but, I've only heard him speak less than a handful of times and nowhere near as in-depth as this!
Awesome interview with great questions and insights into his history as a great musician and a person as well. I'm primarily a bass player myself and I have my bass playing heroes but, I do have musical heroes that play other instruments and John Ashton has been right up there with the likes of Paul Reynolds, John McGeoch, Philippe Planchon, Ric Ocasek/Elliot Easton, Reg Smithies/Dave Fielding, Peter Koppes/Marty Wilson Piper, Robert Smith/Paul Thompson and many, many others for me.
Thanks for this interview! Great job! Nod in your direction... 👌👍✌️

I first heard Psychedelic Furs on the bbc radio 1 rock programme on a Saturday afternoon called Rock On . I think they were interviewed re their first album being released and the same show also featured Steve Hackett talking about his new album Spectral Mornings which I’d actually gone there for . I was enchanted by their sound one day in 83 when on a building site the electrician had passed me a joint ...” Heaven “ was played on radio 1 and that gorgeous swirling guitar break along with the smoke took me up & away from the grim cold surroundings in Queen Katherine Rd . 😃I’ll def check out Johns’ solo stuff because your description sounds like my thing for sure. Thankyou Craig for bringing John to us and giving us all such insight from the horses’ mouth and giving the bloke the time he deserves . ❤️😇🏴❤️ from Wilverley Enclosure phoney Witches (ps we saw the Furs at Poole Arts Centre years later during their Midnight to Midnight tour which was a bit flashy like the record but I guess the mid / late 80s had got that way in rock music. although “ Brand New Dream “ is more like their earlier more rugged & trippy stuff )

He said all music seemed to be more homogenius and aimless, but I recall myself thinkin of 2 last records -book of days, world outside that they were kind of culmination too, as my thinkin was that no other could tell what is english winter rain like they, it just not stop, and there is not much what is happening in your soul watching outside. The beauty of 100 shades of that grey. If had to pinpoint some, it would not be the hits but the "Should god forget" -perhaps too tight drumming to desribe the rain like I just did, but...

What a detailed interview! Especially interesting stuff at circa 24:00, about use of an ARP guitar synthesizer on the intro of India. The first two albums have a lot of guitar work that souns like a synthesizer.. played with a guitar, or something. Such otherworldly sounds, no wonder John Ashton was so interested in sitting through the mix of the first album since he clearly has a lot of talent in creating interesting sounds. Not to mention his guitar playing, it can vary between right at the edge of cacophony and a punk-like racket to more restrained and ambient work, but there's usually several, sometimes even beautiful, melodies in many songs and interesting chord changes. And then there's some songs like India that have 'less expensive' chord changes and just loop the same general structure and a couple of chords, with variation added by different guitar parts. And liberal use of effects.
But anyway, thanks for uploading, great video.
