You've been Rick Rolled. 😆
That's really his voice.
He Rick Rolled himself :).
They didn’t make the video until after the song was number one and no one knew what he looked like. Speaking for myself, I was shocked. He talks about it now in interviews and gets a kick out of how people reacted. At one club they didn’t let him in because they were expecting a black man.
Rick was 21 when this came out in 1987. It was his first song, he had 8 top ten hits in the next 5 years. He became disenchanted with the music business and retired at 27.
He has started gigging again and has released several albums including one just last year.
He had a fantastic year last year at some legendary festivals and ended up hosting the BBCs New Years Eve program this year.
Sorry my friend. It's his real voice. Not only that, he's European.
@Missy-mb3fq England is in Europe...?
@@SweetKandi European means ''continental'' ( French, German etc), not British.
@@malingor7042 Great Britain is the in the continent of Europe, no?
@@SweetKandi In the same way America means all of America , Canada , USA and South American , its all America , But if I said American , You'd think of the states I Imagine..
@@chrissharp6733 Oh I see. Do people really differentiate England from Europe? In the states they don't. Interesting
He’s such a nice guy IRL. There’s a rule in music not to talk to the talent, he came right up & was like “Hi, I’m Rick Astley”. Put his hand right out. Such a gentleman. ❤
Welcome to "Rick Rolling" yourself.
But honestly, it is a genuinely a good song with a good meaning behind it. Yes, that is him and his real voice.
Kinda amazing this came out a long time ago and then resurged during the internet days of "Rick Roll".
I can’t believe you NEVER hear this song 😱 it’s so iconic 😅
I never mind Rick rolls or the memes because at least people latched onto a good song/singer.
Rick's still making music and performing...sounds great :)
The best angels on my side, pray with me, and im a giant. Stf up.
Rick is still around performing, a really great guy, was in competition for a # 1 album in the UK last year, but he lost to Ren, who really deserved it a lot. Rick can really do rock music, too, not just pop. He was amazing with the Foo Fighters (I think at the Glastonbury festival in the UK?), rocking out. Good guy and great artist who's lasted over the years.
Back in the day it wasnt about hearing a black, white or brown voice. It was about the talent, we didnt care about skin color. We just loved the music.
AMEN!!!!! I was getting ready to post the exact same thing!!!!
Yep massive international hit. His voice with his looks of course stunned us. But dam he’s amazing live. He was originally a drummer in a band that played covers and well known locally. But when their lead vocalist left and Rick took over. That’s when he was noticed by the record producers of this song.
I'd heard the song on the radio when it came out before seeing the video on MTV. Was astonished at his voice - that face doesn't match that voice. Though a great singer, I think this song would've been another footnote in the 1980s. UNTIL the "Rick Rolling" thing started it for a whole new generation. Rick Rolling started on 4Chan in 2007. With the promise of a sneak peak trailer to a game, they posted a link that went to this song. Was called Rick Rolling almost right away. Just glad his voice remains a part of communal memory.
No way this reactor has never heard this song before. He’s playing us. This is the best song in all of music history.
Absolute banger. You need to go down the Rick Astley catalogue. So many rippers! Whenever You Need Somebody, Don;t Say Goodbye Girl. She Wants to Dance With Me and My Arms Keep Missing You just some of them. So many great tracks. His debut album Whenever You Need Somebody was wall to wall hits. No filler at all.
*ICONIC song from 1987. When you look like Howdy Doody but sound like Luther Vandross!*
😂
Rick is still awesome and still performing and recording today. Since you liked this one so much I highly suggest his "Together Forever", my second favorite song of his.
Lol another amazing British ginger with insane vocal chops is Simply
Red. Check out Holding Back the Years, or If You Don't Know Me by Now.
Check out you will be shocked
Band is called SimplyRed
Song : If You Don't Know Me By Now
Their first hit ‘Holding Back the Years’ was the one that shocked me
Not sure how old I was when I heard this when I was younger. But even then I liked this song. It didn't even faze me the way his voice sounded. I just knew he has a great voice.
I think he had another hit called together Forever.
I watched a documentary type thing about him and when they were making the video, he asked "what do you want me to do"? They said just move around....and there ya have it.
❤️🔥Please react to: Bobby Caldwell -What You Won't Do for Love - Micheal McDonald -I Keep Forgetting - Simply Red -Holding Back the Years
He was between 19 & 24. At the time.
Now check out Lisa Stansfiekd, ‘All around the world’.
Or better yet, Annie Lennox, considered the greatest white soul singer.
The British singers of the 80s were amazing.
Dusty Springfield was and always be the greatest white soul singer. Annie is great but very different
That's definitely his voice!
Hubby STILL Rickrolls people in his lines of code to other coders. Its the realization that they got rolled in unique ways are bonding moments.
🤣
I enjoy your reactions…. Looking forward to more!
Thank you!
That’s him. 😉
You been Rick Rolled
You have to remember (oh you weren't there) lol...this was the 80s and most of this music came out on music video channels, so we saw Rick Astly most likely on one of those before we heard him elsewhere. And, yeah, everyone agrees about the voice/and him..lol
Listen to A Cry for Help
I had the same reaction. I already loved the song but the first time I saw him sing it I was floored. Now it just seems normal but I still remember how different the picture in my head was from reality.
"He invited to the cookout." YEAH BABY
Home Free (an a capella group) does a hilarious cover of this! If you've never heard of being "Rick Rolled," you need to look it up!
It's adorable that you Rick rolled yourself, just over the voice. It's his.
Secondary note? The black bartender dancing? Gus in Psych.
Sorry NOT Gus in Psych! He’s 20 years older minimum and was actually a successful dancer and back up singer in Britain in the 80’s.
the best! disco of the early 80's
Love the reactions of his voice hehe yeah is his true voice and love this music, greetings from perú, ah you right the old music is the best
Suggestion: for the peak of musicianship from the 1970s you must try the Eagles. Each member wrote, sang and played instruments. Songs: Hotel California, One of these nights, I can't tell you why. Each is different.
You're right, we all were blown away by The Man Behind the voice. He put out hit after hit and to a large degree owed to the production team Stock Aitken Waterman who pioneered That Bouncy effervescent pop sound (also boosted Bananarama, Laura Branigan, Kylie Minogue among others)
Now you have to react to Rick's nemesis Ren, lol. Seriously, they went head to head, releasing albums the same week last year. Rick was all over the place promoting his album on tv and radio. Ren wasn't even in the country. He promoted his album, Sick Boi, on UA-cam and Twitch. Ren got to number one in the UK charts and Rick was number two. An extraordinary talent, well worth a check. Try "Hi Ren" to start.
loved both songs of his and went right out and bought the album 1987
Summer of 69 by Brian Adams
Oh it's his voice!
Its all rick. Listen to him even talk. Deep voice
You're cracking me up. It really is his voice.
He's from Newton-Le-Willows, near Manchester UK.
Also he was like 16 or 17 when he recorded this. It's hard to believe that his voice was already that rich at a couple years into puberty.
Yes, it's his voice. LoL. And, he's still putting out albums . Home Free did a fun cover of this one if you would like to check it out.
Yes, that is him singing!!! Most people doubt it. LOL I knew would say that!!
yes at nineteen I was in awe as well for such a young-un
You've been Rick Rolled homie.
Have a look at him doing Highway To Hell at Glastonbury last year. Who knew he was a drummer as well?
I was 9 or 10 when this came out in the UK. Loved it then, love it now. And he can rock out with Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters. ❤
Never Judge a Book by the Cover .... Never Judge a Voice by the Colour!
He has a really good live version of this at Glastonbury festival
The soul singing is basically church singing or choir singing. Everyone can learn it and every race have for years. Back when whites where alot in church they be singing like this all the time. But offcourse genre must allow for it too. ❤
Ha!
Watch Bobby Caldwell “What You Won’t Do For Love “. Your parents probably played it . THAT is gonna get you!
(Then, Righteous Brothers to finish your head spinning!)
You should look up his Glastonbury performance of this song from a couple years ago. Looks and sounds just as good now.
Yeah, I heard him when it first came out. I was utterly shocked--but not that he was white, I was shocked that he wasn't 40! I was in middle school when it came out, and he looked like he was a freshman in high school--absolutely staggered me when I saw him. But in hindsight, if he'd been a black kid with that voice, that looked that ridiculously young, I'd probably have been a tiny bit less staggered. Still staggered, though.
And 1987 (the year this came out) reminds me of Heavy D, whose first album came out then. We need a whole lot more Heavy D reactions!
He still sounds incredible. And I love that he’s just kind of vibed with the whole “Rick Rolling” meme that was popular 10-15 years ago.
There's nothing quite like someone young getting rick rolled.
Good selection from 1987.
1:54 im deaddd lol :D
First time I heard it was on MTV.
You've got to hear "Bee Gees - Too Much Heaven". if you have not heard them as a foolow up to supprising voices.
Together Forever❤
This is where the term being "Rick rolled" came from
Back in the day his voice was a lot more raw and strong. As he got older, it became smoother and more controlled.
❤ this song!!!
Such a FUN reaction.
Please do some Kylie Minogue. She started out around the same time as Rick (with the same producers) and to this day is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet.
How about "Can't Get You Out of My Head" for starters?
Will be happy to check it out!
Yep his voice! British artist in 80’s
that is his real voice:)
Listen to Holding Back the Years by Simply Red for more blue-eyed ginger soul.
Always Been the Greatest
🔥
A band called Suicidal Tendencies! Songs such as Nobody Hears and You can't bring me down! You gotta trust me on this! Its the type of rock you will dig!
You might enjoy R.E.M. I recommend them singing Man On The Moon.
Subbed.
PLEASE DO PLAYER "BABY COME BACK"!! You'll love it!!❤
Rick rolled!!!!
LOL!! Yeah, I think we all thought he was a black man. Of course, I think a lot of people thought that about Taylor Dayne when she first came out too. Sometimes, you'd hear the song on the radio first and then turn on MTV and see the video and think.....OH WOW!! They look NOTHING like I pictured lol!! Listen to Rick's "Together Forever" song or "It Would Take a Strong Man."
For sure lol😭
Not sure if you reacted to Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music White Boy, if not you may want to.
Please listen to 'Like to get to know you well" by Howard Jones. You'll be blown away yet again.
Yeah It's hard to believe, bruh. but that voice is actually him at the age of 21.
Please check out Imminence with their song “Continuum.”
Lead singer plays violin at same time sings and screams. You will love it guaranteed you.
Oh man, sorry to cuss but I fucking love this song lol haha
He’s British or Australian. He has some other good songs.
He's British, married to a film producer from Denmark (Lene Bausager) and they have a daughter named Emilie. He's also still making music
Dig the channel Nat! Try one of my fav bands 311- Down!
Peace
Will do💪🏽
🎼Please react to The Righteous Brothers -Unchained Melody
Hey he is a brother, Skin is still skin bro.
Way, check out Michael McDonald and Bobby Caldwell (RIP my dear brother) for more white boy PURE SOUL. You definitely need to be learning some more...I'm not even going to be telling you to check my man Chaz Jankel, Boz Scaggs or my "son" Mayer Hawthorne (Tuxedo) repping the latest gen of pure soulness... and they all white as driven snow..
When are ya'll gonna quit saying he sounds like a brother.
yes but not that short. he v. tiny man
Yup a him and still sings the same
Snow - informer
Talent knows no skin color...
Listen to Simply Red…….same reaction
His real voice? Of course, not. For starters, he sounds American. Indeed, the majority of UK sing with an American accent. Very weird.
I dont believe you should be trashing a singer that ha 100,000,00 million fans all over the world. Tune to mortal technique thats more like.your era.
Yes that's his voice! lol
