Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (T3.1) lens review with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)

- Here's a lens that I've been asked to review many times, a lens that helped make Samyang famous. It's a quarter of the price of Canon and Nikon's alternative 14mm lenses. Does it live up to its reputation, and really hit the mark in image quality?

Gosh, I love it when I am looking at a lens and come across a review you've done. Thankyou for the work you do, you're great at presenting pros and cons very well for us amateurs.
Your channel is easily the most important channel for me. Great continuity from video to video is great for me to compare lenses side by side from each of your videos... Thanks!
Your reviews are excellent and concise! You cut right to the chase on what really matters without the endless blah, blah of many other reviewers. Subscribed!
Your evaluation of Samyang 14mm was spot-on.. I bought it after seeing your review. It was truely a sharp lens, well constructed, and the mechanial movement was smooth, but there was one problem for some of us Canon users. Those aperature numbers were partially covered by the flash and the big Canon name. I need to make a little effort to see those tiny numbers from the side; my dad had to wear his glasses and I had to take mine off to see them. Overall, it was such a bargain at $250 USD for this quality that I would not dare to ask for more from Samyang. With much appreciation!
The barrel distortion is very easily corrected in post processing . This is one of my favourite lenses , its almost a must for astrophotographers .i love this lens
Awesome review, I was looking for a wide lens to film my fitness videos in my small living room and I think this is it
Hello. Are happy now with this lens for filming fitness videos? Is the background also blurry?
Love your vids
No matter what lens i put in the search-bar here on yt your videos always come up! They are great!
Great review, love all of the deep details you gave, this seems like a great lens to have especially for the price.
I use mine exclusively for architecture photography.. Vignetting and sharpness are not a problem at F5.6 and F8. Distortion is corrected automagically in Lightroom. Making this the perfect and cheapest way to get 14mm.
Albert Yang is the lens hood replaceable? I am looking to buy one but the lens hood is chipped.
anyone else get Wes Anderson vibes when he's doing the video demonstration and then zooms in? lol love it
Chris you should sign up for a BH Photo affiliate account so you can link to their site for lenses and make a little extra income at the same time.
I guess that he is not interested.
Fantastic Review as always! I recently purchased the Samyang 14mm RF mount with auto focus and it has pretty much lived on my EOS R for the last 3 weeks on all my architectural shoots. I ended up reviewing it in real world scenario on my channel. Keep up the great work Chris!
I truly enjoy wahtching your reviews Christopher: Very well made: Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the consistent and thorough effort with your reviews, Christopher. This is the second lens I've purchased after seeing what you had to say (the first was the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS - love that lens) and I've really been enjoy the Samyang 14mm. You have also mentioned from time to time that people request certain lenses for review, and I have a couple for consideration: Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS II, Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG OS Sport, and either the Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX DG OS Macro or the Sigma 150mm f2.8 EX DG OS Macro. I realize you can't get to every request, and you need to do what keeps you interested as well, but I thought I'd at least put it out there. Thanks again and keep up the outstanding work!
the world's best channel =)
Hello Chris; I just want to say that I love your reviews; have bought a lot of equipment because of your awesome comparisons. Keep up the great work!
Chris you are a legend, was looking for a review that was indepth and got to the point. So Thanks
Thanks Chris, your reviews are always to the point, thorough and useful!
This was a beautiful review, Chris. I am a new subscriber from not long ago and fairly caught up with some many of reviews because they are fantastic! So informative.
Thank you for being my to-go-to for lens reviews!
Keep up the good work!
At 1:18 looks like an eye in th sky :)
illuminati eye
Yeah, an eye
I watch Christopher's videos just to be serenaded by his voice.
Use this regularly on my Canon 6d. Absolutely love it. Is a difficult lens to focus, but you can get the handle of it and it is a lot of fun to use.
This lens was the best solution with my problem on fuji. I bought this cine version combined with the fotodiox shift adapter and i have a 21mm focal shift lens with low distortion because im using the middle part of the image. Excellent
This is exactly the purpose that I'm looking this lens for - searching for the best lens for tilt shift adapter on the SONY e APS-C sensor!
Another first rate review. After seeing this I have decided to go for the 16mm for astro and landscape on my 700D the first lens I have bought. Got the twin lens kit 18-55 and 55-250mm which has served me very well. Loved your review on the later by the way. Great job thanks for all the info you have shared like your style dude.
I got this lens and love it!!Loved seeing a Korean hymn book at 6:46
This is my go-to lens on my A7R. Amazing lens: great sharpness, cheap, and very solid. I also like the focus ring it's smooth and have nice moment dampening.
One thing I noticed is that this Samyang Lens compresses little bit more than other 14mm lenses. Also, barrel distortion is reasonably consistent and editing it away in lightroom is pretty easy.
May I ask what y meant by " compress more?
Ahh you got Cine version. I got the 14mm also.. Love it.. But hey on the non-cine (photo) version the focus ring still has about a 270 degree through on it. But most of that is for close focusing.
SOLD!
And THANK YOU so very much for your very thorough and thoughtful reviews! Good luck with your upcoming nuptial.
Another great review, Christopher.
I'm thinking of buying this lens as I'm a student on a tight budget. Looks like it's gonna do the job on my 550d.
God bless and thank you. Keep up the good work.
I found a lens correction profile to add to LightRoom and it takes care of the distortion issues quite well
+Larry L Well could you link it please?
Ended up in the unhelpful part of UA-cam again
Did you see the eye in the sky? 01:17. Amazing
Thanks for the review, now I have this lens and I've used it a lot. Thank you for making your videos, I have found it very useful for introducing me to the world of photography.
Greetings from Chile!
Excellent review. The distortion can easily be fixed in post.
There seems to be a strange sort of 'double' distortion on a full frame camera, giving the effect of making straight lines wavy at top and bottom of the image. Davon from Lavikka mentions the problem in HIS review of this lens, but you manage to 'show it off' better than he does. So, it looks like an amazing option, as long as you don't need to shoot buildings 'square on'. Another informative review. Well done.
I'd love to get my hands on a wide angle lens, and this one just so happened to pop up for auction. Bookmarking it now, wish me luck!
Hi Chris! What's your thoughts about using this lens for home vlogging? Where you have your gear on the tripod and stand close to the camera able to zoom in without moving from the shot?
+Dobrodziej It could be quite good :-) I believe that's how vloggers do things
I've owned the Rokinon 85mm, 35mm and this 14mm. The 14mm is the only one I've sold due to performance issues. The barrel distortion became a real issue for me. I really wanted to like this lens.
Thats a BangBus lens right? Make those flat booties look curviest.
+Gannon Flint I mean, you're probably not wrong.
Q Bahahaha!
Thank you. Excellent review.
Cool and very detailed review! Thank you so much for your job! Very helpful!
I only buy lenses after watch your videos. I did it with my previous 2 lenses. Great job!!
I had this lens for a while for my eos m3. I liked doing long exposure shots of the stars with it and for candid portraits of family members. The huge convex front lens always got remarks haha
I've been waiting for that review
Congrats on your wedding!
I received mine a couple of days ago - mounted on my Sony SLT-A57 its very sharp across the frame for me, so it seems I got a good one - whether it is sharp at the edges on full frame remains to be seen but on APS-C for me it works very well despite the loss of some outright width compared to full frame - I'm happy enough with the width, and will add a full frame body to the kit one day to make use of the full width. One thing took me a while to figure out, and that is the focus ring scale - from 0.28m to 0.35m it seems pretty accurate, but to get to actual infinity from 0.35m I only have to turn the ring to around the 0.7m mark - thats where actual infinity focus is! Any further than 1.0m on the ring and it starts to blur - at the infinity mark its a mush! Using the focus peaking on my Sony even doesn't help that much unless I use digital zoom to hone in on the subject. I can live with the focus scale quirk now that I know where perfect infinity focus is - I cant live with the cloudy nights however, as I've not had a chance to shoot the night sky since I received the lens! :)
HI Chris I just got my lens but when is on foucus I can't see the green light is normal? I guess is only because is manual thirst any sound too
this review has made me just ordering this lense!
SamYang should be very thankfull to you
+christopher frost photography I really love your videos! probably the best lens reveiwer on youtube in my opinon!:) The only thing is the fact that you dont reveiw many nikon lenses it seems like, and i would love to see more nikon!:)
I like how you put the crop sensor pictures!
I keep coming back to your Videos, I noticed that you were at St fagens when i saw the lakes near the Castle, as someone from cardiff i'm subscribing
I just received mine today
So is this lens the best lens for astrophotography and star-scape timelapses, as well as general landscape photography?
The lens I have, the kit 35-55mm, is too blurry for starscape photography (I think), and doesn't capture a wide enough angle when I am up close to the mountains. Many times I hike right up to the base of large mountains and glaciers and can't capture the entire image in one frame.
thanks mate, this is a good brand for a price, I'm a beginner, but I think this will be my first wide angel lens
So would you say that it's best used with a crop sensor camera?
I just bought this lens. Maybe I should have gotten the 10mm f/2.8. I hope you make a review of that one soon.
I have requested this review as well, many thanks sir. though I would have liked to maybe hear more about the profile correction for the distortion. While that topic is outside the scope of its optical qualities, which you have covered very well and extensively, I still remain curious about how the images look once corrected for distortion. THanks again, greatly appreciated as always.
Christopher I have always liked your reviews..Many thanks
Thanks!
Is 14 mm wide enough for aps c? Or do i need 10mm? I'm having a hard time picking on 14mm and 10mm
10mm will be a lot wider. Depends on what you want to do.
I bought the 10mm f/2.8 for my Pentax after seeing a lot of reviews of the 14mm, it would be nice to see how you like the 10mm as it is a 15mm equivalent on APSC. The version I bought from B&H controlled aperture and had electronics, so focus confirmation works, which makes it a little more useful.
Hi Cristopher, would you recommend this lens over tokina 11-16 f2.8? I use an aps-c camera and looking for the best in the terms of sharpness and video quality. Thanks!
Chris - just wanted to say thanks for all these great reviews. You've helped me buy (and be happy with) 3 Canon lenses! One question - as a fellow UA-camr, was wondering what kind of mic you use for your voiceovers? It has a great full-sound. Keep up the great work!
At the moment I'm using the audiotechnica at2020 usb
Ok cool, I'm familiar with that one. Any compression or other audio processing?
Thanks for your advice! That's quite useful. I have a much better, new microphone nowadays which is really helping.
Thanks for this review! I've been going through a lot of your reviews in the search for a new wide-angle lens.
Btw, Can I suggest that you add just a light grain to your test grid's white parts? Particular to this lens, there is some blurring in the corners (when wide open), which might not be so apparent when looking at the picture of the house. A little grain in the grid might bring that out more easily.
I've noticed the blurring from other ppl's images and first thought it was due to using an adapter with the lens, but it seems it's present even without one. Anyway, keep up the good work! :]
This turned out to be a big favorite of mine. I use this a lot.
You can get em for 200$ that is just amazing for 14mm f/2.8, the value for money is indeed very good
i am using long exposure with this lens but lamps looking very bad why i dont know
Terrific review as always. Thanks!
I find myself using this lens, or the stills version, more and more with 35mm analogue and less with digital, somehow it seems more suited to Delta 100 as it "fits" better with the look of the film. When you first get it you use it at every opportunity for digital but then it seems to be in your bag and fewer opportunities to use it with 'pure' landscape photography. I find I use the 16-35 f4 much more and then usually at 18mm or narrower. However, with B&W film it's not pure landscape and you're not photographing big vistas with foreground interest, it's more likely to be shots of much smaller areas where a lens this wide works.
Love your reviews! Thanks!
Hey, please review the Lens Turbo mk2 , it's cheap and it should be very usefull for all APS-C users.
I hope you will be reviewing the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 AF soon!
I am purchasing the normal manual version for my D7500.😅
Its so good at the price point.
great review. Thanks. I am about to elevate my film works with this sense. I am a budding videographer who was having great difficulty in finding a good light sense. Was using a canon bfs 15- 85
Awesome review I have the fisheye 8mm and that lens is great too.
Do you know of this samyang lense will fit or be suitable on a Canon 2000D at all. Thank you. ?
you going to try and get your hands on a samyang 10mm f2.8 next? looks like a pretty fantastic ultra wide for an apsc camera so far
What a cute accent :D Where did you pick it up? Sounds quite exotic ;-) Btw, thanks for the video!
I think he's actually from Wales.
Wouldn't it make sense to have the cine lenses have short focus throws and the photo versions have longer focus throws? Since having tact sharp focus is more important in a photo and much less noticeable in video, especially at 1080p...
+Obox It's generally considered better to be the other way round, then the cinematography can track the subject more easily and smoothly
How would this compare to the 10mm
+Evan Reyes Haven't tried it
+Evan Reyes I'm owning the 10mm mounting on EOS 60D, the only thing I can tell is that it's razor sharp even at wide open. Color, distortion and Chromatic aberration are like the 14mm. Contrast is higher a little bit. I bought it NEW on eBay at 350 USD and it creates the pictures that can be found only on expensive Canon L lens. Totally satisfied.
+Christopher Frost Photography I would like to hear your opinion on a review about this lens (10mm). I own one, I can borrow you if you are interested! ;)
+Christopher Frost Photography I'd be pretty interested in seeing a review of the 10mm as well actually. Your reviews are so methodical! I wish more people did reviews this way
hi chris when you are using this on a full frame camera a7s (mine is adapted lens from a mount to emount), i am experiencing obstruction of the hood on the frame (i thought earlier it was a vignetting for using a an apsc lens or full frame, and gets resolved if i switch to apsc mode), i realize that it was too wide and the vignette was actually coming from the hood obstructing the field of view ( as when slide my finger to the hood i can actuall see it near the vignette, how do you resolve this?
Chris... for Wide angle Landscapes and Cityscapes would you reccommend the 'Samyang 14mm F2.8' or the 'Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6' that you've also reviewed? I'm OK with the manual focus of the lens and I usually shoot landscapes at F9-11 anyway. So which has the best optic quality and which gives you more of the wow factor on the final images?
Hello,
What do you think about Samyang 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS Lens (Canon EF Mount) in comparation with other ultra wide angle lens for APS-C camera zoom or prime? I found very litle coverage for the Samyang 10mm lens. Thanks in advance.
+Pop Eduard I'm planning to review that...one day in the future...
I just ordered one one of these, under £300 quid it feels like stealing! Cheers for the review very helpful as ever.
Chris, you have turned me onto the samyang/rokinon/bower lenses, and I thank you for this. I am glad you have posted reviews of their incredibly sharp lens offerings. I do have one question for you however. I imagine that you have had these lenses for some time and I am curious if you have encountered any quality issues with the lens coatings. I have heard/read that they used to have problems with spotting and even peeling. I have no first hand experience and would greatly appreciate your take on this. Thanks.
Hiya - no, never come across any problems like that :-)
I have this lens. and I really dont understand why, but it feels like every time I use it the infinity focus is littlebit different, I have made 2 marks on it from when it was at that point but next time it might be little bit different. and still it seems to be way off from factory markings, its around 0.6 to 1.2 meters.
im searching for Samyang 16mm f2 and no good review been found. how is it.
You haven't searched very hard then - there's one on my channel! :-)
I own this lens. It's ok. I will keep it. But I wouldn't rave about it as much as you.
It's a bit "fuzzy" and the focus seems to not quite go to infinity.
thanks
Chris, you are the best!
in terms of sharpness and image quality which one you would recommend sigma 17-50mm f2.8 or Samyang 14mm f2.8?
(For landscape photography)
i just returned my copy of this lens and am waiting for a replacement. the problem with my copy was the corners on the left hand side never get sharp even i stop down to f8 or smaller. right hand side corners can get reasonably sharp.not sure if anyone else has experienced this issue.
I have a Panasonic G7 with a speedbooster for Nikon mount. I'm wondering if I should go with this lens or with the 16mm? It seems that the 16 has much less distortion, correct?
I'd go for the 16mm
hey Christopher...I am a really beginner in photography. I have a nikon d3300 and I want to buy this lens. does these two work good together...I think my nikon has a "Formatfaktor" (Cropfactor) 1.5....what do u think?
If you want a 21mm equivalent lens, then go for it
Have looked at the10mm rokinon, I'm thinking of getting one but I'm torn between the Samyang 16mm f2. I'm using a Nikon aps-c d7000 for low light and astro photography. I have a 24mm f2.8 witch gives me great light but just not wide enough. You thoughts please thank you, Carey
+Carey Furman I haven't tried the 10mm I'm afraid. The 16mm is really excellent though
do the samyang 10mm 2.8!
A lens review about the samyang f2.8 would be very nice, specially in dark situations !
Charles Miele thats the non fish eye version right
I have this lens for my Sonys, and it's awesome!
after watching your review sir 2 hours ago, i order the lens by online :) .... thanks for the info sir CHRIS
Chris I wanted to thank you very much for having this you tube page and for giving us such amazing and informative videos that are extremely helpful. I also wanted to wish you a happy Easter over in the UK, god bless your Family, and may they be happy and healthy. :). I did have one question about Samyang Lens, I'm going to buy my first one I'm very excited, but I'd like to get your input on which is the right one. I'm trying to do low light and night shooting with the Canon 70D. Maybe even astrophotography, would you recommend the Samyang 14mm f2.8 or the 16mm f2.0? i know one is designed for APS-C and other for full frame but I want to get the bench image quality, for camera and camera sensor. Also I would love it if someday you could review the sigma 105 macro or the Tamron 90 mm macro. Have been some recent very interesting mackerel reviews but those are the two that I think are the most interesting for me right now, and also very popular. Anyways I know I've been typing for too long have a wonderful day and thank you again
+Erick Barron Thanks! I'd recommend the 16mm f/2 for you
Holy distortion! Very noticeable in the image of the house.
I just watched your Tokina 11-16 mm 2.8 and I felt this review was much more positive. I plan to buy a lens for landscape or Astro photography, which do you prefer and why ?
Currently using a d3200 w both 18-55 55-200 vr ii kit lens and a 35 mm 1.8.
The 11-16mm will be far more versatile
I had this lens but my copy was nowhere near sharp on corners at 2.8. More like 5.6 at least. Much happier with my FE 16-35 now
So it's likely more problematic to focus on this cine lens compared to the 14mm photography lens? Would the image quality, colour, contrast be the same on both lenses?
As I said in the review, they are optically the same
Ah yes you did. I would imagine they're more difficult to use as a photography lens generally with getting focus.
Hmm, well I think the video version is actually slightly more precise (I can't remember, to be honest)
