Some DSLR's have focus peaking. In fact, using magic lantern can add focus peaking to a 70D (which I've tried and it's awesome). Also, I could be wrong, but as long as you have exposure simulation enabled, you shouldn't run into the issue you explain around 6:20 . I use my Rokinon 85mm on my 80D all the time and never run into that issue.

Mine focuses at infinity at 10ft or 3M like mot of them I think. No big deal, just do some test shots and/or magnify the image in LV and mark the lens where it focuses at infinity to make it quick to find when out shooting. Also stop down to f8 for sharpness and also it makes focusing less critical as its extreme wide angle. The results are awesome for the money. Martyn UK.

Fantastically articulated with many nuances here that I was unaware of, despite this being the 8th or 9th video I watched about this lens. It's obvious that you actually use this equipment and you have great communication skills. These types of more nuanced videos that are actually mapped onto reality are so refreshing in the current 'hikack the algorithm' crisis of UA-cam. Keep up the good work!

I have a PENTAX dslr and this lens. I do have focus peaking and even with this lens if I hold down af and manually focus it does beep to confirm focus. It doesn't use a chip to confirm focus, it uses the af sensor in camera to confirm.

Unfortunately mine just died after 6 years. I loved this lens for landscape and Astro. Worked great on my Nikon and adapted to my Sonys, but something came loose inside and the barrel shifts back and forth. Camera shop advised that this lens is sealed and isn't manufactured to be able to repair internally. I am about to buy another one though. Still cheaper than $2k for the Nikon version.

Hello! thanks for the video. A couple of coments: 1.- DLSR do have focus peaking in live view. 2.- Nikon and Pentax version of rokinong/samyang do have contacts, so you can change aperture from camera, use all metering modes, and have aperture info on the exif. 3.- With Pentax you have focus confirmation with any kind of lens, even with no contacts and old lenses. 4. -Live view on DLSR is not as the mirror less cameras, usually won't represent the picture you are going to take. Cheers!

    • @01eg

not every DLSR have a focus peaking in live view, and you still may find this lens without contact

    • @awichiwou
      @awichiwou 3 роки тому +2

@@01eg off course, not all have, my comment could sound categoric, but I was only saying that focus peaking is not exclusively in mirror less, as many DSLR form middle to top range have too :D SAMYANG only have contacts for nikon and pentax mounts, all other mounts don't have contacts...

Helpful! Even 3 years later. Here's the deal - Panasonic L-Mount came out with the 18mm F1.8 prime about a year ago. That's still about as wide as I can get on an affordable L-Mount prime lens (if affordable means < $1,000 US). Unfortunately, for real estate videos where I mount my S5 camera on a gimbal, I still need to apply some stabilization in my editor, which crops in a bit. This makes even an 18mm lens too narrow, A 14mm lens is perfect. I'll find infinite focus and mark it. Also, on the S5, I can set the ISO to 4,000 and still get a sharp image, so F2.8 is fine and I can even set aperture to F8 most of the time to keep everything sharp. This looks like a good lens for me with an L-Mount adapter!! Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the very informative video, even after the long winded merch-plug. One piece of advice though, "GET THE CHIPPED VERSION!!!!" It's not horrendously more expensive and not only will it make shooting easier with focus confirmation, but also enables shooting modes on your camera. It also saves EXIF info to your images and most of all, it identifies the lens to your editing software. Both Photoshop and Lightroom have lens correction preloaded for this lens that you can easily access with one click if you have the chipped version.

What you’re saying about the aperture value doesn’t apply to mirrorless. My Fujis, for example, will give no aperture value in the EXIF, but they expose based on the light, not the F value, which reads 1 or 0. But every wide Samyinon lens I’ve used has had inaccurate infinity markings. 😕 Not their 35mm 1.2, though. That thing is amazing.

There is an AE version of this lens (at least for Nikon), it will give you focus confirmation as well as correct exposure metering. While reviewing this lens, you say nothing about the distortion this lens is infamous for. The Samyang XP 14mm f/2,4 manual focus, is supposed to be a very good lens, although at a much higher price.

I bought one for astro-time-lapse and discovered on my first night out that the camera's interferometer (Nikon D5300) doesn't work with a manual lens, even with the AE chip. So you will need an external Interferometer (not expensive). Also, if you have a Nikon APS-C this will be a 21mm focal length. It's still a good lens though and you can't beat the price.

You may or may not benefit from this lens, since this lens is made for larger, full frame sensor cameras. This lens will actually look like a 21mm lens if you were to attach it to your a6000. In terms of aperture, this lens on your camera will have an effective aperture of about 4.28 and not 2.8, so also bear that in mind. Not everyone is in a financial position to purchase other brands. I have the Rokinon 14mm F2.8 and I recently purchased an used D810 Nikon and I love the astrophotography results shooting the Milky Way. A genuine Nikon lens to do the same job is around $2500AU and I just don't have that money as a pensioner.
My first copy wouldn't achieve infinity focus but it was quickly swapped over by the seller and other than being a case of play for a while to get focus (I originally had it on an older Nikon D80 without live view) I'm impressed with the results.
One mention Josh, you said something about removing the rubber focus ring and adjusting screws to correct focus, apparently that works on the Rokinon 135mm, I took a chance and tried it on my Rokinon 35mm F1.4 and it's just not that simple or do-able as far as I could find. I ended up with the lens half stripped down and still didn't find any way to adjust the infinity focus on the lens and decided to reassemble it before I ended up with a totally unusable lens. It focuses at higher F ratios so I'll use it as an F2 lens.

All metal construction? Other than the lens hood, or the body, or half the interior components.... It's mainly a decent quality plastic... Like most of the MF samyang lenses....

Rockinon gives distorted images so what do we do? Gave an endless picture. The bitter taste of the cheap remains for a long time. Serious photographers will not buy it for even a single dollar. So Rokinon will redesign the lens if they want to purchase their own lens. Lenses of this type are for professional photographers who shoot architecture and such a lens will not do the job.

If you are a professional shooting architecture, then YES you need a lens with better geometry. You cannot expect a $300 lens to give pro results, but that doesn't mean it's not a great value. If I'm shooting nature, there are no lines that need to be kept straight. But I do want reasonable sharpness.

Too much "I" that's given if the I is credit with knowledge and experience having a proven portfolion. Humility and walk the walk will learn more
