I can't imagine a P.T. doing an internal exam. I wouldn't even let my Dr. do that. I had disc replacement where they went through my belly to remove the disc then cut me 8n the back 4 replacement. Not 9nce did my PT ever even mention an internal exam. And I had some problems. They just strengthened my core.

Thank you for your comment! In your case, with a disc replacement, this type of physical therapy would not be required. Pelvic floor physical therapy is a speciality within physical therapy and is recommended for specific diagnoses like urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, etc. Sometimes lower back pain can go along with these conditions, but is not the main cause. The reason I make these videos is to help spread awareness that there are effective treatment options for very common conditions. Thanks for watching!!

If you have some of the problems discussed, the last thing on your mind is if the exam in too invasive. Incontinence is a major inconvenience and more embarrassing than a physical therapist feeling the muscles in your privates. Same if you have pain in that area. Also, most of the time, you can avoid an invasive exam if you can communicate well where you feel pain. The therapist can ask you to explain the difference on both sides of your body, and report which side is more tender to touch, etc. They can work around the invasive part in most cases.

Are you talking about men or women or both? What are the reasons a man would need PFPT? What are the differences' in the exam for male V female.

      Hi Frank,
Both men and women. Men can benefit from PFPT if they have urinary incontinence, bowel issues ie. constipation, fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, penile or scotal pain, chronic prostatitis (can cause chronic pelvic pain), or before and after prostate surgery. Can also be helpful for lower back issues or tailbone pain.
Much of the exam for males and females will look the same. We are looking for a history of the condition, what makes it worse, etc. We will do a full range of motion and strength exam. In males, the internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles is performed rectally. The external exam will include muscles located in the perineum.
This video is overall geared more toward female pelvic floor physical therapy, although there is definitely overlap. Would you be interested in a video about what to expect at a men's pelvic health PT visit?
      Thanks for your comment!
