It looks like the Astra/Zafira power steering pump is faulty so I shelve it and instead bolt the Freelander power steering pump to a car alternator which has been adapted to work as a motor.
    Spoiler alert. At Verks!!!!! 😊
    Advantages are
    1. I have one.
    2. It has a pulley that matches the PS Pump.
    3. It has mounting brackets that makes it easy bolt the two together.
    4. It's easy to set the speed of the motor using an ebike controller
    5. I already have everything required to drive it.
    Disadvantages are
    1. It is inefficient - a proper permanent magnet motor would draw less current for the same output.
    2. It is bulky
    3. It cannot be driven from the 12V battery.

If you are looking for 18650 cells to build a battery pack here is where I buy mine. I have always used LiitoKala cells and found them to be good quality.
Note the Name brand cells are copies, they are NOT genuine but do have similar properties to the original and are still excellent batteries.

That's so much quieter Ali. And even 10 Amps at 36 Volts is still using much less power than that noisy pump.
More a more workable solution IMHO.

Yes mate, I'm really pleased it went so well. I suspect a better quality setup would be virtually silent but for now this will do the job.

If you still have the Leaf, you could look at taking the steering column and rack from that as it's an electric drive, you'd have a lot less losses in running, but would take a bit more engineering to get it installed and working.

That's a good point Neil. The car is gone but the steering column is in my garage as I stripped pretty much everything that might be of any value. TBH I haven't even looked at it yet as my priority is to get the car working and it is easier to use the existing PS pump. I believe some models of Corsa have an electric power steering system that may be easier to get working but I'll look into that another time.

Changing the rack could induce undesirable bump steer if you don't match the dimension and locations of the standard rack. Not impossible but the new rack needs to be the same length and position.

Hi Ali, good to see you still at it. I'm doing house renovations at the mo. Yes, I use my every second year's leave to catch up on stuff that I can't get to in the past two years that I have to work in😂. Any way, you could look at getting hold of a decent sized out runner and "somehow" attach a serpentine pully to it to drive the pump, that'll do away with the paracitic losses..... Come to think of it, you may even be able to directly drive the pump shaft if the out runner is facing the pump head on. You could remove the pully on the pump and come up with a machined aluminum socketed coupler from out runner to pump.... Good video mate. Happy new year.

Hi Charles, thanks for dropping by.
I'm hoping to use an ebike battery and controller to drive this motor and pump. It should be easy to keep a charger in the car connected to the mains socket so it charges every time the main battery is charged,
This way there will be no drain from the main battery.
For now I'll keep it simple and use the pulley and alternator but in the future a more efficient motor would make sense.

Thinking this idea might work for a stock AC compressor to avoid all the faffing with flushing the system to change oil types.

I can't see why not although I don't know what power is required for ac. It would be a very constant load so should be fairly easy to calculate the capacity of the battery required.

Have you explored electric steering racks from another model ? I ended up using an MR2 (3rd generation) power steering pump on a Lexus RX350, the pressure was lacking to say the least. Going this route might impact your range as a result of parasitic loss.

Using an MGF or TF rack and or steering column is a possibility and a Corsa rack was mentioned too by another guy but for now I'm keeping this as simple as possible and retaining the Freelander rack.
As for losses I recon an ebike battery would last as long as the cars battery so there would be no parasitic losses there.
It would be easy to charge it every time the car is charged so I think I will stick with this idea for now.
