You could mount an electric fan clutch pully to the pump and adding a pressure sensor to control it so the pump isn't being deadheaded. Pull the trigger, pressure drops, pump pumps, water comes out. Release the trigger, pressure rises, pump disengages.

@Karl with a K ... I do believe the biggest problem is the water flashed to steam in a heartbeat any time the water is not flowing. If there was a pressure relief valve with some internal flow it may fix the issue.

@Karl with a K ... did you even watch the video? That pump locked up several times with only a few minutes of running. If you know anything about high pressure pumps, excess pressure will do that when it has no place to go. BTW, compressing anything makes heat. The difference is with water it tries to convert to steam, which takes up 1700 times more space.

there's something called an "un-loader valve" used in pressure washers. It's used to keep the pump from HYDOLIC LOCKING when you stop spraying.(which is why the pump pulley stopped spinning when you stopped spraying.AS far as adding soap,a T fitting added in to the fresh water supply useing a flow valve would have been of benifit.

it is not the blades of the pump that is the problem, the problem is the bearings on the pump shaft, as he said water has no lubricating properties, a power steering pump is an oil pump, it uses hydraulic oil so it has oil type solid bearings that need a constant oil supply, with no oil they are overheating and seizing up on the shaft even though they are covered in water.

I replaced the power steering pump on my '01 Subaru Outback with a reman unit and took the old unit apart; There are these hardened metal blades that slide and pump the water. One side of each was shiny, meaning it had worn. I put one of the blades in a vice and tapped it gently with a small hammer and it broke instantly. These are VERY hard but very brittle metal. But water is not enough to lubricate them, that is why the pump seized up.

But fit all this to a traytop 1 tonner so you can use a 1000 L bulk liquid container. Have the pump outlet plumbed to the back for convenience of the access to fitting and storage of the hose.

By using a nut to disable the pressure relief valve you cause undo back pressure enough to stop the pump and burn the belt and overheating. I suggest rather than a nut, use a stronger spring so that when there is no flow out the nozzle, the pressure still has a relief but yet much higher.

I believe with the correct valving, water resistant anti friction/ceramic based coating to the bore of the pump, bearings and it’s vanes since water is a poor lubricant, a smaller tank in the back, with a garden hose bypass direct fitting in the front and you may have stumbled on to a interesting option for factory pickup trucks. If I could ever afford a new truck I’d happily pay $1000 bucks for an option like this.
My suggestion is to add an electromechanical clutch for an air conditioning compressor, find a properly sized pressure switch with a high enough rating and wire it in such a way that once the hose is not spraying water it will disengage the clutch. You can use the pressure bypass port for that as a cheap add on and stop the pump from deadheading itself which can cause issues.
You may have stumbled on to a hidden market and a way to save old worn parts and make them useful again for those who want to give it a go.
    Well done.
