Two small details that catched my eye: - The boat splashes look more like they are going into the boat instead of away from it. - The fishing rod holder looks like there is no way to take the fishing rod out of it atm. Other than that, stellar work as usual. Can't wait to stop being a sad, unemployed bastard so I can support you on Patreon.
Also I think the boots are maybe a bit too big... And it would be cool to make the boots on the back look like they are worn or a bit dirty after all that travel. About putting some fantasy detail on the front cover, I thought about making the clouds on top of the mountains in a swirlie spiral shape thing. The blue wallpaper is a bit too plain, some little texturing could be nice, like a lived in kinda old house. All this channel makes me see sooo mcuh good stuff in storytellong! I Love it, I leart so much, thanks!
@@lucieth555 That's been adressed in the video a few times. :P He had it right the first time, but Kevin told him while that might make sense in-universe, for the reader it's nicer to have it facing them. But Boro's thinking it over nontheless.
Congratulations on finishing this massive project. I know you must be proud. It's been a pleasure to learn and grow with you over the course of this series. I know I've learned a lot.
Normally you would have a welcome mat on the outside of the door, so you're like welcoming people who are outside your home into your home. But I kind of love the way you have it. It's like Gilbert/the viewer is being welcomed to the outdoors. And that interpretation makes sense with the letters facing the viewer like that.
I am a retired printing press operator ( have produced books and many magazines) I have seen thousands of logos/designs. The logo for your book is readable yet interesting. I think it is excellent. It has been fun watching you design pages and the cover. I have been learning digital art for about 4 years and have enjoyed your thought processes. Congrats Boro on nearing the conclusion of such a big project. I am in the south east U.S. near Atlanta, Georgia. I am 63 and my children are all grown, but I probably will buy a copy just because I have been "riding along" for most of your videos. Hope it will be available here.
My favourite digital paint series of all time!!! Congratulations for finish the book!!! It was so epic Boro!! Thanks for share so beautyful process!!!!
looks really cool! as far as feedback: - i would suggest adding the boat shadow on the water - also add some more saturated translucency in the waves. and on the back - since the sun is coming from the front, i think the window should also catch some high contrast light on the frame, sill and even on the plant a bit (again translucent leaves)
Your work is beautiful as always, but there are two things that you should be aware of for the backcover. You might need more space for the text. As you stated, it is a lot. Rule of thumb is one third of the backcover for text. Maybe make the door bigger. And everything looks too clean. You could add sand on the doormat and the floor. I think it would look good :) I really love the front cover, the only thing I noticed there is that the splashes go the wrong way. Boats "break" waves, so the splashes should go away from the boat, as is shown in your reference. :)
Door could use a peephole and mail slot and maybe some mail implying he hasn't been there in a while. Maybe also a tackle box or a fishing basket under the window.
There will be text on the door, so less detail is optimal. I think it doesn't need a peephole nor a mail slot. If this should be a stand alone illustration then you would be right.
I really love the front! The welcome mat reading towards the reader is a nice thing as it welcomes the reader to the story. As so, I'd love to see the door being just a bit open and showing a sneak peek of the world or something, to lure the reader in to the story! So even tho we're in the house, the adventure waits us outside...
Been here from the start!! So cool to see your journey up to this point. It must feel like you've gone as far as Gilbert! I can't wait to get a copy when it's officially released!
Great job and congrats on finishing the book! It crazy how much you have grown as an artist through out working on this piece and it's super cool to see what kind of things you have come up with. I think most of the comments already have stated some of the weird things so I'll just add what might be fun to include. On the from cover I think since the books focus is going towards the island it would be nice to give more visual interest to the island, maybe some flowery patches on the side of one mountain, maybe a more densely packed jungle while other parts are more field like. Obviously non of that it necessary, you already made a very legible cover, just some suggestions to spice it up. Keep up the great work
Love it, especially the cover, looks very inviting. I know you still have to go ahead with the detailing so you're probably aware - but I'd say like most things look too 'perfect' in a way. Boots and the doormat may be a bit sandy from walking on the beach, wood could have some knots or blemishes, some defects from the long travel etc. Might make it feel more like an adventure. Anyways, can't wait to see the end product!
I think the plant pot on the back would be better as a dark orange to tie in the nice pop of color from the fish on the front. Also I think the mat by the door should look more like a decorative rug or mud mat rather then a welcome mat, as those are usually outside the door. I love how these covers are looking and I can't believe outlandish curiosity is nearly done, it seems like last month I found your channel, not 5+ years ago 😅
I may have missed this explanation because I haven't watched the full video (yet) but on the cover the cabin of the boat is missing, if you look at the other drawing of the boat the mast is right in front of the cabin and are almost touching, but in the cover you can see the mast and don't see the cabin at all, it looks like 2 different boats.
Hi Boro, I've been watching since the Baba Yaga painting (so quite a few years I guess?) and the Outlandish Curiosity series has been one of my favourite things on the channel next to the SPC series and Overpain. I really enjoy these long videos and hope you keep doing them. Congratulations on nearly finishing the book and I honestly hope I get the chance to buy it soon as I kind of feel like I've joined you on this journey.
Front cover looks awsome. Welcome matts are usually on the outside of a door. Is this the inside of the boat...that would make sense as he has collected the little bush. The back could contain more subtle easter eggs from the book.
The covers look both really, really great! The back cover gives this cozy feeling and I love it! About the eventual wallpaper not being all that fantasy, I guess it depends on the kind of fantasy you're inspired by? I have definitely seen victorian patterns in fantasy illustrations, like florals, usually either very subtle or very very colourful... I also see repeated simple shaped patterns in a contrasting colours from the base, but I think that it might be too eye-catching in this case. About the logo, I really love it tbh, I would just maybe add a rim light and maybe a highlight star-shaped-like to the t, or the y... To make it look even more antique metallic than it looks like now, and to get it to gel a little better with the lights in the illustration maybe. But feel free to ignore me lol, it's great!
I think the welcome mat facing toward us, and therefore Gilbert, makes sense. Because both the reader and the character are being welcomed into an adventure into a new world... So it's more metaphorical than practical 😅
Love the work! The only thing that’s bothering me is the direction the fish is jumping to. I kind of have the feeling that he is just aiming to much to the right, but it could just be me too … It is a bit sad this series is coming to an end, I really loved to watch the journey. I discovered you with one of the first video’s of this series. Since then I’ve learned a lot from the channel.
Love this, the front cover especially is really gorgeous! I'd love for you to add some wallpaper texture. Honestly as of now, the amount of detail on the backside compared to the cover is really really low, it feels a litte bland to look at. So I'd definitely go with a pattern! Another thing I noticed was that the perspective on the floorboards feels a bit messed up, although it might just be the shadow of the window messing with my head a bit.
honestly I really like the logo, just make sure there's enough contrast behind it and it's fine. it looks interesting and quirky and a good representation of the book's vibe.
Overall, I think the covers came out wonderfully! My only recommendation for change is the shadow of the plant on the floor in the corner of the back over. It looks like the plant is sideways in the shadow, but its standing straight up in the window. If you could make the shadow angle different, my OCD brain will stop screaming. I love your water and the composition of the front cover is *cheif's kiss*. You did a great job! I can't wait to buy this book!
Amazing video as always! Fun to watch! Personal opinions: I liked it more towards the end, but I still think the fish is too big in the cover, also I would do a more in the top view to bottom ==of the boat, this would give that "point towards the island" and give that sense of "to be reached" sense, although would kill the big wave. The color of the wall in the house should be more "natural" and blue is not that good at portraying that, also I would jag and tear the boot, make it weathered and slightely folded on itself as it should be with more wrinkles at the ankles area.
The jumping fish looks much better for sure imo, also I do have to agree with others in the comments (kind of) about the water on the ship, the ship is cutting through the water and it should be splashing at least partly out, but also what's going in rn looks like its going _inside_ of the plane that the ship is on, instead of splashing up it/interacting with the surface. Edit: Also if you end up thinking the back of the cover is too brown wood heavy the door could maybe have a white wash paint? that'd tie in nicely with the white on the cover, maybe? Also I think maybe if the window light patch is from another window to the left the angle? might? be weird? Or rather bc it matches the angle of the visible window pretty similarly it looks like it's cast from it, maybe i just misunderstood where the light is coming from though. Piece looks awesome as always
Wrapping things up with the cover :0 ! Ur stuff's are frkn awesome, I like how specific this channel is - it's not exactly what I eat when it comes to my own art, but this is something a lonely pash can appreciate soundly. (Also ur merch looks amazing, can I just say that?) - This might seem an odd suggestion, but could you read Mistborn by thee brando sando perhaps? I would love to hear your thoughts on it, since his books helped me a fat much, take it as an offering lol's
The wallpaper might look like Cat in the Hat which I feel like shouldn’t be the vibe Gilbert’s home has but other than that the covers are great so far.
Do you work out compositions with small thumbnails? I usually have to do that to get my brain seeing things before I start my images. Just curious;great job Boro!
Love the front, dont Love the back. Personally I dont think that the blue is working, I would have liked it better, I think, if you incorporated the colors of the fishy for the back :)
Two small details that catched my eye:
- The boat splashes look more like they are going into the boat instead of away from it.
- The fishing rod holder looks like there is no way to take the fishing rod out of it atm.

While we're at it, wouldn't the Welcome mat face the other way so you can read "welcome" as you enter from outside?
@@lucieth555 That's been adressed in the video a few times. :P He had it right the first time, but Kevin told him while that might make sense in-universe, for the reader it's nicer to have it facing them. But Boro's thinking it over nontheless.

Gonna need the popcorn for this one

1:13:38 super easy barely an inconvenience 😂 immediate pitch meeting flashbacks
Welcome facing outwards feels like it's welcoming me to an adventure outdoors.
Hehe well that's true

I'm so proud of you Boro.
I've been following this book for...years?
I've loved to watch it develop.
You always impress me with everything you do.
I'm gonna miss watching you work on Outlandish Curiosity, though I'm hoping it'll come up occasionally. Onto the next big thing! 💕

Excited it’s close to done. But sad loved this series over the years will miss it. Congratulations on the completion of this large project!
I love how happy boro sounds about the things he's making ^^
Was amazing to see this project since the begining
I can't believe it's over!

that was an hour and a half video? I didn't even realize when I started watching, and it didn't feel like that long. Great video!
I really love the front! The welcome mat reading towards the reader is a nice thing as it welcomes the reader to the story. wow both the front and the back look lovely so far! i absolutely adore how you rendered the waves!!
I love to see you work on real projects. Better than advices ;-) Loved it !
55:20 "the vertical stick" - I'm dying right now 🤣
Been here from the start!! So cool to see your journey up to this point. It must feel like you've gone as far as Gilbert! I can't wait to get a copy when it's officially released!

Wow, what an accomplishment. Where do we go for presale of the book.
i love your 1h videos.
Amazing!

a question i ask myself every day
Is this still in lab color? Very satisfying results!
great work let gelbert hold the handrail
the welcome mat is a cool idea cos he's an outside kinda guy
The jumping fish looks much better for sure imo, also I do have to agree with others in the comments (kind of) about the water on the ship, the ship is cutting through the water and it should be splashing at least partly out, but also what's going in rn looks like its going _inside_ of the plane that the ship is on, instead of splashing up it/interacting with the surface.

Piece looks awesome as always
I'd also maybe extend the fishing rod all the way up, it looks pretty short, I dont think I've ever had a fishing rod at short as a door
I think the door would be more recognizable as a front door if it was a rectangle. I don’t see many front doors that look like that.
Why the door mat says Welcome and not Farewell? You'd read it before leaving if it's inside placed this way
Flip the doormat around maybe? -Otherwise love the vid, man. -Cool to watch you build something from ground-up :)
One thing is weird to me, the boots next to the door looks huge. If those are Gilbert’s boots they can get trough that tiny door. :)
Wrapping things up with the cover :0 ! I was 15 when this project started.

Overall it looks really cool, but all those details on the wave triggered my trypophobia 🥲
