I really appreciate that you explain your thought process and how you find solutions to problems. Art is problem solving! You are so detailed in explaining why you are using the technique, and that's super helpful. I like that it is software-agnostic - I can play around and see how I could use this in procreate or CSP.
When I heard the words "..I pretty much finished working on the Outlandish Curiosity...", september suddenly turned into christmas. Can't wait to get my grabby little hands on it. I will be very much using it as an art book and it will get a place of honour amongst my "The art of..." books.
Thank you so much, I can’t praise you enough ❤️! You just pointed out that big mistake I’ve always been doing of having all my edges razor sharp. I realize how it kind of ruined every single one of my works. I’d have taken years to figure it out by myself yet it felt so obvious when you explained it.
I actually started reducing the amount of layers in my pieces some time ago and at some point i started painting more and more in just one layer just because i didn't like how detached everything looked on separate layers I thought it was just my weird problem lol
Hey man I really appreciate the video. As somebody who is still learning digital painting, how these things are done is still a bit of a mystery to me. I tend to assume artists are somehow doing all this edge control on the fly, so to speak. Thanks for demystifying some of this process for us.
Paintstorm user here, been using this kinda technique for a while now. : ) It really works well. I have three blending brushes just like yours; One round for just pushing things roughly One soft for also doing that "airbrushy smooth" look One bristly for artsy looks.
Borodante in the Teleshop: "Are you tired of having razor-sharp edges everywhere that ruin your picture and eventually crush your art dreams? Are you tired of limiting yourself to working on a single layer to fix this problem and make your artworks look like the works of your arch-nemesis, Chad McPainter's pictures? Are you tired of trying to work with ancient traditional painting tools instead to make it somehow? We introduce you to the brand new Edge Blender Brush!" "But Boro, is this tool really that great?" "Great question, Random Internet User! Let me show you easy it is to blend those ugly, sharp edges!" "Wow! That is brilliant. How could this tool be even more useful?" "Well, now that you ask, let me show you that you can use this tool like a classic paintbrush, only by pressing it a little harder!" "Boro, this is phenomenal! It is truly an offer that you cannot refuse. So don't hesitate, call us now and order your brand new favorite tool!"
For PS Smudge tool you can tweak the brush scattering to make it blur, or even link it to pen pressure to be able to smear and blur in the same preset. Hope it helps
I'm trying to figure out why you need to go to another software (Paint Storm?) ... when Photoshop already allows you to "Sample All Layers" while painting or using any other Tool on a new empty layer placed above the layer you are refining. You are able to do all edge touch ups on a brand new "empty" layer while still being able to move pixels, distort edges, blend, etc. from the underlying layers ... but all those changes will take place on the new layer while the underlying layers remain untouched. This is one of the major strengths of Photoshop!! This feature has been available for many years.
Wonderful video, yes, you can move multiple layers at once in PS. Press and hold the Command, inPC Ctrl, key and, in the Layers panel, click directly on the layers you want to move to select them, each layer will become highlighted as you click on it. 😊
Sadly from my short bit of research into it, moving a selection of multiple layers isn't possible. What you _could_ do though is to make your selection and then press Ctrl+Shift+C (Or the mac equivalent if different) to copy from all layers then paste that into a new layer that you can positon where you please. It'll select from _all visible_ layers though so if you want to avoid moving the background then you'll need to hide those layers. It's probably not the most favorite way to do things for someone who uses painting style/concepts, but I guess it's something you could try. Another option I saw was to make a macro for the selection > movement, and then use that on each layer. That just seems like a lot of work though.
FYI, Paintstorm WILL let u transform multiple layers under the same selection. That and a bunch of other minor details are the reasons I can't switch back to Photoshop.
I gotta try that right away! With ASP on the iPad it should work the same I guess. So Boro, I think one work around to all that work at the end to polish things would be to just make the masks using a textured brush instead of a lasso tool for example. And maybe even using a brush with opacity/flow control so that it’d automatically blend with the bg in a few places whatever the bg is. Then it’s just a matter of refining it all at the end like you showed, but maybe doing it from the beginning like this would save a lot of touching up at the end. What do you think?
Boro, I don't know if you'll read this and I don't know if you *want* any critiques to your painting either, but I mean, there's something bothering me in that painting that I just need to tell you. There's this spot with the monkey-cat-like creature sitting on a round window, and it's holding the edge of the window sash that's opening to the outside of the house. OK, so to me it looks like that the left arm of the creature should extend a looot more and it wouldn't be sitting that comfortably there because of it. Think about it in 3D: The window is pretty big, and so should be the sash that covers it when it's closed. You could even do a simple mockup in 3D to see it. The framing of that sash could probably receive more light of the outside to separate it from the window frame, so that it will look kind of like a round door, and not like just a capital letter "D" with its top and bottom attached to the window. Hope this helps you somehow. Cheers!
How well does this work within the actual layers? Would it allow you to blend between color and transparency? If so, you might be able to paint and blend the edges like normal and still be able to move the layers around!
Paintstorm Studio can blend with transparency. It can't work with Lab color mode though, that's why I didn't open my PSD in it. The problem with blending edges from the start is you'd have to be using a blending brush all the time. I like my brushes dry these days. Also, it's just not the same - blending with transparency instead of actually putting solid blended brushstrokes at the edge.
I know this video is super old now (it has literally been sitting open in my tabs since it came out) but I think the reason it looks vectory or cartoony is because it lacks bounce light in the darker areas/characters specifically. I know you're going for a mysterious vibe and don't want to reveal the character so you could use that really strong high contrast lighting to introduce some atmospheric light rays from the window obscuring the character somewhat and that could look really good!
Playing with layers can be fun - you get to play with different effects that can enhance the image that you are working on. Also, you can lock up a copy of the original image in case you mess up your current layer to the point where Control Z can't fix it anymore!
Loving the extreme progress on this book, I can't wait to see it's completion especially considering the journey and skill improvements seen throughout it's inception. That being said though, is it just me, or in the two compositions shown at the 1:10 minute mark, shouldn't the hat/crown be re-rendered on the left composition to account for the curvature that is shown in the right composition? Or is this something I'm simply not understanding with how the story is intertwined with the artwork? Assuming both frames are representing the same mystery character, doesn't the geometry of the hat/crown significantly change?
If you wanna move several selections to the same spot, just move them separately, but use arrows instead of the mouse. And do not zoom in-out into the canvas. Arrows will allow you to move objects at the same exact distance, as long you remember how many times you clicked the buttons (I usually just count)
Hi Boro, Apollo's position is impossible if he's holding the edge of the window open. if the diameter is the same it would be much further from Apollo's position.
Maybe it's just me, but i find more interesting and intriguing the lighting in the second image (right) than the left one. Talking about mistery, adding dark tones help to build up that mistery you may want to achieve, just like you did in the right one. But hey, it's just an opinion :)
Layers are God tier if you use them right. Best method is to lasso airbrush and erase to get photorealism in seconds. Shapes with soft edges and sharpe edges really are god tier and new layers is the best way to do that
Ah I see. Sometimes I'd fix it and sometimes I wouldn't. I'd often do a bit of blurring or remake an edge entirely so it didn't stand out more than it needed to. I think it comes about more often for me when I use selections and mask for the purpose of going back to a shape later for a different purpose.
i think that this image looks flat couse of the perspective. leg of the shelf seams to be standing in a position slightly facing the sealing. The wall with windowsseams to be waling onto the viewer. but windws are close to being a perfect circles. which is also wierd. i think fixing perspective would make the imige pop much more and that it can have even grater efect on the final pice.
So I'm wondering if painter has this kind of thing? Mmmh. I have stopped using PS for the most part and CSP for larger painting projects can get laggy... I'll have to try. The cartoony effect is one I've noticed before and sometimes it bugs me so much
usually how i solve this issue is I never use the eraser on the edge of an object when defining the silhouette. Instead I paint with transparent colour to retain that brush texture.
My gosh. I just watched Boro's old video about painting a daydream (from 5 years ago, ua-cam.com/video/A-pdVOjpMp0/v-deo.html), and I wanna cry seeing old Boro. Pretty sure you can with ctrl + f to use the same transform. Also if you had created a group earlier with only individual characters then you could just move the group.
