Zondervan is starting to take risks and it is really paying off. From the blue cover on the NIV Grace & Truth to the newly released NRSV Personal Sized Large Print Bible with Apocrypha. This was a risk for two reasons. One is the bold purple premium goatskin cover/liner, and the addition of the Apocrypha (between the testaments). They also swung for the fences with the sprinkle ink pattern on the page edges. This, in my opinion is the what makes this Bible special. The area they really hit it out of the park is the layout. I wish they would release a layout like this in all of their translations. This hand sized block does not compromise at all in font size. It has a very nice 10pt font in a double column format (line matched). They accomplish this by leaving a small but plentiful outer margin, and forgoing references and only offering some limited textual notes. A fantastic compromise in my opinion. They also nailed it on the gutter space. The text is well into the readable zone. Because it has the Apocrypha, in order to keep the spine from being too thick they did not include a concordance. Another fantastic choice I think. This allows them to use the premium European 36gsm paper which makes their high end Bibles so special. It is among the best paper in print. It also has overcast stitching in the first and last signature to assure this will last a lifetime. The only small compromise is the split liner, which is only noticeable because of its bold color, but for the price point it’s really hard to complain about it. Overall if you like the NRSV (1989) and you’ve wanted an affordable premium bible with all the bells and whistles (edge lined, perimeter stitched, gilt line in the liner) at a price that won’t break the bank, this is it. So neat !! This purple is so beautiful!! I agree with the clashing colors of the liner/end sheet. Would've considered this one if i was actually wanting a NRSV
Nice and concise review! Showed off the bible and gave us your insight in a reflective and direct light. One aspect of the NRSV I want to gain knowledge of is the translation. This looks like an exceptional road to travel. Thank you. Heading over to your review after reading the NRSV and your thoughts on it. Thank you. I'm probably gonna add this to my collection.
It's hard to find the original NRSV now. Even harder with the Apocrypha. But I did find this very Bible you reviewed from Amazon, and am looking forward to getting it. 😊 I do wish they had included maps.
I was too, but after reading much of the ue I've decided they have crossed the red line abandoning faithful translation for their progressive agenda. Not that the translation as a whole isn't good. It is, even making some improvements on the original NRSV. But the blatant mistranslations and supporting textual notes are quite disingenuous. Just my thoughts on the matter.
Agreed the two color liner is odd, and the listing of traditions in the Apocrypha is very nice! Looks like a great Bible and I love the speckled gilding.
Loved it. Thank you. You mentioned that the Coptic Orthodox (I think I got that right) recognise the book of Enoch. How interesting - is there a Bible with Enoch in it do you know? Blessings
Hey Tim. I’m looking for a Bible with deuterocanonical books. I’m not a maps or concordance fan. I’m looking to invest in a $500 rebind that will be my go to Bible to last me for the ages. Would you consider the quality of this Bible “worthy” to put $500 into? Meaning do you believe the craftsmanship, paper quality, etc would be ideal for a rebind? Thanks!
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews do you feel the binding and quality is up there with a Schuyler ? I’m nervous to invest 500 in a rebind being it’s from China. But I haven’t had hands on it yet. Thanks!
@@orangemanbad It is overcast stitched. A rebind with a reputable rebinder will only make it even stronger. Is it a Schuyler? No. Also, I would recommend you look into ICA Bibles. Not sure who is charging you $500, but that seems a bit high. He is reputable. He stands behind his work. And he is not $500. Anyhow. I am confident this block will serve you well. Again, look up ICA Bibles before you drop $500. Seriously. Do it.
I think we may all have a wish list about our bibles, Tim, but I have one that I've not yet heard anyone else mention, and that publisers could put some pages of blank text paper after the card stock at the front to ensure that the title pages do not slip and wrinkle up, which almost always happens and which can press my perfectionist buttons! The light weight text pages slip against the hard cardstock pages because the paper weights are incompatible. This is always happening in the front of the bible becuase we read Genesis 1 onwards....and those title pages have no where to go but slump. Annoying!! I have ordered this bible today from EB to me in Australia, and the only thing I'm not wrapt in is the 3 ribbons choice of colours...bit yuk, in my opinion. I will be changing mine!
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews That's right. I've done a few and even have a video on how to do it! I reckon they could have done one colour ribbon, because those 3 do not relate to one another despite that the speckling has lovely tones in it, they could have gone for much softer toned ribbons. I agree with you about the end pages which could have been one colour right across from leather liner to book block. But I don't spend much time looking at that once I'm reading. I like your review, thank you!
I am curious if your copy had most of the pages stuck together due to the speckled gilt? I like the Bible very much, but I did need to page through it to unstick every page.
Pretty common in almost all bibles I've had. I usually "break them in" by quickly flipping through the pages a few times before I get into reading them. I've got a Schuyler personal size Canterbury kjv....it was on sale and I still never thought I spend that much on a Bible but it was worth it! I love it so much.
White space is to small. I have mild astigmatism. More space is needed between words for my eyesight. Looks lovely if I want a Bible to set on a coffee table and not read. 2k makes a Bible that is lovely to look at and with less page used. However it makes a Bible that only works good if no have astigmatism. My astigmatism changes. So corrected reading glasses will make the text readable until the eye shifts again. I avoid 2k Bibles due to this issue. They do make some Bible that have better spacing like the ancient Faith Bible, but most are a no go. Funny part is a TCR handy size is easier to read with my reading glasses. Maybe that is sad part.

The only one I know of is the Lexham English Septuagint, but aware the Septuagint is only the Old Testament.

Absolutely. The only minor disappointment is that it doesn’t have accent colors. Otherwise it has all the premium options.

That’s a bummer. I love 2K’s work. It is crowded, but it’s sort of the cost of having it hand sized.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews NO I have tcr handysize easier to read!
Not sure what that is. This one has the Apocrypha as well, it’s a lot extra to put in a smaller bible.
