It is the natural grain Sokoto Goatskin cover, and a Calfskin liner. The most mind blowing feature is the 22K Gold page edge gilding. That is pretty wow. It has 45 GSM paper, which makes it thick and heavy. They used the Scofield layout, and left the...

Some good points. Most of the textual variance really are inconsequential. And your salvation doesn't hang in the balance of whether the word is wind or spirit. Episcopalians generally don't tote our Bibles along to church. The readings are going to be printed in the bulletin anyway and the sermon is going to be tied to one or more of them.

I’m Jewish so my thoughts on textual criticism may be somewhat different. I’m not sure what Jonathan means by the vocalization having anti-Christian tones, as it purely just tells you how to chant the words while in Temple. It has no effect on the meaning of words. In fact the Torah scrolls in every Temple in the world do not have any vocalization or vowels. Also most will be displeased at this take but there shouldn’t be much debate on manuscripts like Masoretic vs Dead Sea Scrolls and possibly even the Peshitta. The reason is over the course of the cannonization of the Tanakh (Old Testament) taking place many Oral Traditions & other thoughts have creeped into the text while scribes were producing these manuscripts. We even see in the period of the Qumran community the cannon was less strict, including books like Enoch. So it’s not wrong to say people commissioning these manuscripts may have asked for the scribe to edit passages, and let’s not forget scribal errors, of which there are hundreds within the Leningrad Codex itself. I can also give some insight into the Orthodox Jewish world where the Dead Sea Scrolls aren’t seen as something to look into. While valuable obviously, the Masoretic text represents our tradition and the DSS represents a different tradition. You’ll probably only find debate between manuscripts like the Aleppo Codex vs Leningrad Codex, of which I am in agreement that the Aleppo is far more authoritative and should be the base standard for all modern bibles (Not to mention the Aleppo only has a handful of scribal errors compared to the Leningrad’s hundreds) Textual criticism is definitely a headache sometimes but honestly between every extent manuscript the overall narratives are mostly the same. One thing to always keep in mind though is that the DSS & Masoretic manuscripts were preserved by Jews, while the Peshitta, Latin, & LXX were preserved (and copied) by Christians.

I don't have an issue with the NRSV saying "wind" in Genesis 1.2 because of how the verse is later echoed by Genesis 8.1: "Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided" (NKJV). The restoration of creation after the flood is stronger if you can see how the same Hebrew words are being used in both passages. That being said, I like having translations that say "Spirit" as well, since "Ruach Elohim" is otherwise a term in reference to the Holy Spirit. English doesn't have that perfect word that can mean wind, breath, and spirit at the same time, so you're always trading off one thing when you're gaining another.

KJV - Most Popular English Translation RV - Most Popular Spanish Translation Synodal Bible - Most Popular Russian Translation CUV - Most Popular Chinese Translation Van Dyck Translation - Most Popular Arabic Translation Hindi Bible Society - Most Popular Hindi Translation Louis Segond Version - Most Popular French Translation All of these translations use the Masoretic Text for the Old Testament and the Textus Receptus for the New Testament. Note that the Hebrew in the Tanakh used in the present day by the Jewish community - the tedious and careful custodians of the Prophets and the Law throughout history - is in the ancient Hebrew, and is not modernized. In fact, it is against Jewish law to alter the text of the ancient Hebrew. Compare that to our 500+ Modern English translations. I find Codex Vaticanus and Sinaiticus spurious.

Do you know anything about the 1973 Common Bible. Apparently, it is an RSV Bible that added 3 and 4 Maccabees and Psalm 151 becoming the only Bible to be authorized for use by all Christian Churches (Protestant, Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox). Seems to be a phenomenal way to bring all Christians together. I have something similar that I had to get for classes at Notre Dame - an NRSV Oxford Study Bible that includes all those scriptures. It is billed as an ecumenical Bible.

I love my text only Bible but sometimes while reading I wish I had a reference suite. Then when I get into a reference Bible I tend to rarely use it.
