@@Fish-Story I think it's pretty likely they will go after the other marmoratus next. Is there anywhere you can move them rather than the paraiba? They're pretty peaceful for big cats, mine has only ever eaten one 5" striped silver dollar before regurgitating it a few hours later. Guess he decided they weren't worth the effort after that.
Yes, marbled pim catfish are utterly non-predatory but out of 16 tanks we only have 4 suitable for their size, and only 3 suitable for their sharp spines, and there is no better tank of ours for them than their current tank.

@@44_83 That's a interesting proposition, the first of its kind for me. I looked into shipping dead fish before on a request from some professors of anatomy, for their classes and lab work for students. No postal carrier agrees to take such a package. They all state this clearly on their policies too. The only way for you is to come pick them up in person it seems.

Dovii need caves usually. In a smaller pond a Dovii probably would have nipped at the big catfish and then hid. Eventually the catfish would probably get an infection. I'd keep a Dovii in something 300 - 400 gallons with maybe a convict, Jewel cichlid or salvini and give them sturdy caves to hide in.

A large predatory Catfish against most other fish is like a death sentence.
Good generalization, thank you, but I thought all predatory catfish could not be lumped together in this statement. My point is about fitting in the mouth. If a tankmate doesn't fit in the mouth, most predatory catfish will not try to eat it or give up hunting it after the first try, perhaps, except the least intelligent ones and/or the most predatory ones, e.g., piraiba and paroon shark catfish, maybe tiger shovelnose catfish too. Again, in this scenario the predator is not allowed to get too hungry to try desperate attacks. If they get too hungry, I think all bets would be off.
Its part of fish keeping. Good work managing what you could.
Thank you. It's a constant learning, vigilance, and adjustment of the stocking when one has more fish than tanks.
Big catfish are constantly hungry and their mouths are proportionally bigger so swallow everything, maybe smaller meals everyday. I had Asian red tails, electric cat, even a bumblebee cat go after or eat smaller tank mates. I learned never let predators get hungry.

Thank you. The GGs get an odd bite sometimes but hard to say from who, maybe the kin disputes. They are smarter I guess at staying away from the piraibas and avoiding getting on their prey radar.

That dorado cat is looking amazing I can't wait for u to place it onto a bigger tank! Also as far as the feedings go, I feed my guys 3x a week when it's warmer and 1 to 2x during the colder months esp when there are many cold fronts coming thru. Regardless I read the fish and their activities. I watch the Goliath the most when he moves alot it's a key to increased feedings and keeping him at Bay. I fed him last night and he ate one whole big ass filet of tilapia. He is over 3' now easily reaching 40"!

I wonder how much food a large piraiba in the wild eats? I've seen videos of some huge 200+ lb piraibas caught by fisherman, they must eat massive amounts!!
IDK about the wild. Our piraiba are fed until their tummy is significantly enlarged or until they refuse. Our biggest 5 footer is fed once a week, probably about 2-3 pounds of herring in the cooler season, 3-5 in the warmer season.

Can you guess why they attacked the Dovii, instead of other smaller fishes in the tank? The Gouramis seem to be the same size of the Dovii.
IDK really. It's a mystery. My guess would be they attack those who move the least, who doesn't run away. Gourami are smart and have likely much better night / twilight vision than diurnal cichlids like dovii.
You might have to set up a night vision camera to see the action at night.

Piraibaare notorious killers the siize difference was too much. If you put more salt in the tank with the injured Dovii it may have helped.Some predators will attack other fish even if they are full.
Thank you, I appreciate finding confirmation of our observations and conclusions in yours w.r.t. piraiba. Full predators attacking fish we don't believe we encountered firsthand but it is probably fathomable for a few reasons.

Thank you for this, I appreciate your thinking about it and trying to help. I believe the DO concentration was adequate though. This is a flow-through hospital and QT tank and receives a fresh water flow 100% every 20 min. Because the incoming flow is supplied by free falling water from a 2 inch pipe sitting half a foot above the water level, it is hard to visually notice the flow. ... As I said in the video and other places, the dovii didn't die from the physical injuries it sustained but from the stress of being hunted repeatedly and going into an irreversible state of shock. I've seen it before numerous times.

The piraiba? Or the P. Marmoratus? P. Pictus only grow to around 5 inches.
If you are speaking about the injured catfish, it is indeed Leiarius marmoratus aka Marbled Pim catfish. Its kin, Leiarius pictus looks a bit different. Its more distant kin Pimelodus pictus is a small fish and looks even more different.

U don’t even have structure in your tank for the smaller fish to hide or rest everyone just free swimming… have you ever observed fish in the wild or went swimming in a lake do your homework

I'd predict so, yes. A 2.5 foot cichlid would be far harder to test-taste versus a 1.5 footer.
not really, none of the monster sized Cichlids are going to do any better with a Piraiba in attack mode

I know your friends big Rich and Josh feed their fish everyday if you would start feeding every day it should keep the aggression down but just don't do as heavy of a feeding as you normally would do to make sure they're full for the almost 2 days
Thank you. Feeding is a convoluted issue. In community tanks of highly diverse fish, some fish tend to overfeed while others tend to underfeed. The feeding routines of every keeper of such communities have evolved over time to mitigate this over and underfeeding challenge to keep it balanced, the game of trade-offs. Any departure from it is a new experiment with some predictable and some unpredictable results. What you suggest would bring about one predictable result - some fish will overfeed and may even kill themselves in the long run while others may go hungry and also die from it sooner than they would otherwise.
No oxygen will kill it quick. Lookes like suffocating to me with.
I believe it went into a lethal shock from the stress of getting hunted and preyed upon.

Thankyou. It was a mistake in retrospect and a learning curve but not as blatant as you make it seem. No one in that tank would be able to swallow Big Bad, not even close. Which is why he wasn't swallowed.

This fish is sick looks like an immune infection but ur stupid for putting him in a tank with fish bigger then him.try adding a female dovii into his med tank for a month or so then put them both back into that community tank an see what happens some for size that dovii will own ur whole tank
Thank you. The fish was hunted and chewed up. Anyway, this is an old story, and yes, a huge blunder on my part. Our current 20inch+ dovii indeed dominates his 4500 gal without any females in sight, but not the bottom, only top and mid water.

Don’t play the victim when your fish a truly the victims… a catfish is always the apex in a monster tank… you made a sly comment about nobody touches the dovii.. but if you look at a dovi shape it’s made to be predated on by something like a catfish or gar ect.
