Capturing a year in the life of a rural, lakeside community in Ireland in the 1970’s,
THAT THEY MAY FACE THE RISING SUN is an adaptation of the final novel from John McGahern, one of Ireland’s greatest novelists. The film stars Barry Ward (Jimmy’s Hall, ‘Bad Sisters’) and Anna Bederke (Soul Kitchen, Sterben) in the lead roles. Lalor Roddy (Grabbers, God’s Creatures), Sean McGinley (Michael Collins, Braveheart), Ruth McCabe (Philomena, Joy Ride) and first-time actor Phillip Dolan make up the rich cast of supporting characters.
Joe and Kate Ruttledge have returned from London to live and work among the small, close-knit community near to where Joe grew up. Now deeply embedded in life around the lake, the drama of a year in their lives and those of the memorable characters around them unfolds through the rituals of work, play and the passing seasons as this enclosed world becomes an everywhere.

I'm tearing up just from the trailer...definitely won't be going to cinema to blubber in public lol. Looks amazing, so happy ireland is being celebrated on screen in many films these days. This country is a beaut

I think the whole point of this movie was to subtlety bash Catholicism.. main protagonists are portrayed as virtuous, intelligent, and morally upright and the first lines spoken by them in the movie are “We are non believers” while asking their elderly neighbour “Why do you go to mass if you don’t believe” to which his response is “looking at other women and some other superficial reason”.
At the end when the others are saying the Rosary at the removal for the dead neighbour the director of this movie makes such a point of having these “virtuous” protagonists shown standing their saying nothing acting condescendingly above those saying the Rosary, a real show of pride I thought. It’s such a worn out, stale and boring concept at this stage to bash old Catholic Ireland and that’s what this movie set out to do successfully. Perhaps a movie bashing the current woke culture the same way old Catholic Ireland is constantly bashed can be made? Unlikely

Reminds me of that classic poem. 'But I useta see her up the chapel when she went ta Sunday mass ... and when she'd go up to receive I'd kneel down there and watch her pass, the glory of her ass.'

bashing catholicism is just trendy these days, maybe one day it will pass, or these people will disappear into the void and there will be nothing left of them
