The self entitlement of members of the public and the media outraged at the Spanish police for not informing us of everything they are doing or have found out so far is amazing. When did the police anywhere give away information on an ongoing investigation. It's on a need to know basis and you don't need to know .
there is no ongoing investigation, and to top it off, the search has been called off today. the Police want nothing to do with exploring the drug underworld of Tenerife. they never have.

More than 300 people a day go missing in the UK. Our police need to concentrate on them not go on a jaunt to Tenerife, that is the job of the Spanish police.

Finally, somebody has said this, I thought from the start how does one make a phone call on 1% battery? Usually, when a phone gets to under 5% batt, the remaining % goes down pretty rapidly, I've found in phones that I've had.
Making a phone call with 1% left would make the phone lose the power that was left almost instantly.

Lucy's call is the call that came through whilst he was on a video call to Brad. If your battery is on 20 - 30% or so, for example, video calls are gonna drain the battery fast, especially in the heat of a summer day, the heat of Tenerife. Then he takes a call from Lucy and sends a screenshot of his whereabouts, that was what made the battery die. It wasn't on 1% the whole time - when he said to Lucy it was on 1% that's when it was on 1% and cut out. Not difficult to understand. If you can't follow that it's no wonder everyone is making crazy assertions and speculations. It's suspicious, no doubt, there's more to all of this, but that original narrative, aside from omissions to cover for drug-taking and whatever else, is fairly straightforward to follow.
I live in Tenerife and I was pleased to hear the positive views on The Guardia Civil. They don't mess around if you're on their wrong side, but they are a damn good force, and I'm the son of an ex copper. They work on the premise that the fewer people that know what they are doing, the less distorted information can be put into the public domain. As far as liaison officer is concerned, their priority is the victim.
Are all recreational drugs legal on Tenerife? If not, the police can’t be that good at their job as the place is awash with them - or they turn a blind eye to that aspect of the economy.

So a lad is involved in an offence of which he gets a COMMUNITY ORDER the lowest form of punishment available to the court, which would have to be within the sentencing guidelines for his involvement and awful people say that no one deserves to find what could be his murdered body, for a lad that is basically still a boy. The alternative of paying for more family to de-camp to Tenerife, for emotional support, while running up more costs in hotel bills is not a good look.
People will part with their money quite easily. They won't care what it's being spent on.
British Consulate should have supplied someone who speaks Spanish to liase with Police. They could have done that without interfering with or compromising the investigation.
I know mine would if a family member was missing in a non-English speaking country.
Mine provided plenty of Indonesian speaking interpreters for families in Bali after the Oct 2002 bombings. I was there.
If we could do that on such a mass scale, surely one Spanish speaker wouldn't be hard.
Mine does even if someone is sick or injured in a hospital overseas. I've been in hospital myself in a country where I was fluent in the language, but i still had twice daily visits from someone from my Consulate & a number to call 24/7.
So what's wrong with the British Consulate ?
But also, Police in my country never divulge info in an on-going investigation & everyone is a suspect until proven otherwise. EVERYONE.
There will be arrests at some point even if it's only for perverting the course of justice... like lying to police during an important investigation.
Personally, I can say that every phone I've ever had shuts itself down LONG before it gets anywhere near 1% battery. But whatever....

Unfortunately, us Brits do not exactly cover ourselves in glory when abroad, and I can imagine that during the peak seasons they are swamped with requests. Many Brits have reported frustration with consular/embassy help (across the world) when facing trouble abroad.
My point was about the optics of the situation. Perhaps it's the media who are skewing the situation, focussing on using the GoFundMe money to bring in more of the family. To many this looks like squandering the money. If the money is being used in the SAR, then get that message out (hence the need for a bilingual agent).
Yes, the issue of the phone calls make no sense. How reliable is any account from a young guy, partying all night, getting a lift by 2 strangers, lost in an environment the polar opposite to his experience? With a Manchester accent does "bus at 10am" get lost in translation to "bus in 10 minutes".

It seems that a large part of Tenerife’s economy is dependent on illegal recreational drugs. If that’s the case, the police will be under pressure to not bother too much uncovering all possible aspects of his disappearance.
If the stories about him are true it's highly likely he made himself dissappear or just as likely he's in a shallow grave somewhere.
Sad for the family but there is probably a dodgey story here involving drugs, money and deals gone wrong.

I can second this, Spanish police are the est police in Europe and they are very thorough. They are more open to answers if they have them and are nothing like the waste of space police force we have here. Same in Germany where I am from, police actually fight crime there and don't let criminals out on good behaviour.
Ohh yeah parents don't search for their kid because they are tooo busy bashing the police. That bashing the police takes up their main part of the day. No time to put on backpack and go searching

Just because the Spanish Guardia do not attach a liaison officer to the family does not mean that they are 'left in limbo'. As Gerard Couzens says: the Police here work differently to those in the UK, this does not mean they are less efficient. Spain has 3 Police forces - National, Guardia Civil and Local. Years ago there used to be criticism that they tended to jealously guard information from each other but I don't believe that is the situation now.
Maybe the reason why you're struggling to understand this case is because the police use the press etc at times to print information that is false to confuse the perpetrators into making mistakes.
As Inspector Morse would say nothing adds up.
How is it a mystery when:
1) he travelled on a "1 hour car drive journey" with "2 strangers" who were not registered to attend the festival party?
2) he was said to have gone to buy cigar by 2 persons but was said to have asked for the next bus time. Did he buy the cigar?
3) he was walking away from the very bus stop where there was a possibility of him getting a bus?
4) he sent his location to his female friend at 1% phone battery but did not remain where he was?
5) his male friend who had a so-called video call with him kept mum for almost a fortnight before revealing that his feet was slipping on a rock?
6) this all happened after Michael mosley as if it were an afterthought?
7) least to mention his past criminal records
