Is The New 2021 Ford F-150 Coyote V8 Quicker AND More Efficient Than Ever? 0-60 MPH Review

- ( www.brightonfo... ) The 5.0L Coyote V8 is back for 2021 in the Ford F-150. It's still a powerful alternative to those who prefer an eight-cylinder option over the EcoBoost V6, and here's how you can spec your own.

Truth!

yup
That engine with a Roush exhaust system makes it sound like a Mustang GT. No better sound exists!
You know what we like clearly, perfect spec right here. Low options, 5.0, 4x4, cool color
And a column shift not a stupid knob
its pretty bad ass for sure great spec !
I think that is the best looking front end to, clean grill, probably pretty light to.
But the fx4 package

I'm glad to see the Coyote V8 is still an option today.
Thank Chrysler, Jeep Dodge and Ram, because Ford was writing V8's off. Ford was absolutely done with em, they were doing everything in their power to switch everybody too turbocharged small displacement engines, but the absolute massive sales success MOPAR has had with putting giant V8's in their vehicles, cutting into Ford's sales significantly, has made ford rethink their whole ecoboost master plan.
And besides all that, the ecoboost engines have been underperforming, underdelivering, overpromised unreliable piles of junk.
@@PotatoeJoe69 Ford sells a million trucks a year, ram isn't cutting into their sales very much at all. The ecoboost engines are as powerful or more powerful than the 5.7L, better gas mileage, probably more reliable. Soon as that hemi eats a cam (as they're known for) its done too
@@BullittKid08 I'd agree that fiat Chrysler isn't known for quality, but we have no idea how the ecoboosts will age. The very oldest eb are about 10 years old. Every other vehicle here is a 15-20 year old truck. We'll see if the ecos join them in the next decade
@asteinmann well 10 years are the oldest and there's been problems with them. If the turbos break, you're talking about a lot of money into an older vehicle.
Yeah agree unfortunately oil companies say like every 10,000 miles between changes. Maybe in a lab or all freeway miles, but most people should change it twice a year (what I do) if they drive a normal amount of miles. And save a ton by doing it yourself, which is a piece of cake for a truck
@@PotatoeJoe69 The only thing Ram had on ford was interior and now Ford stepped up their game. Other manufactures had nothing to do with Ford keeping the engine. Ram has been cutting into GM sales more than Ford. But with the new F150 those days of cutting into ford sales might be over.

I don't care what the eco boosts do I will ALWAYS take the 5.0 every time. The sound alone is worth it. 5.0 with flowmasters original 40 sounds glorious!
I beat My dads 3.5 ecoboost vs my 5.0 tuned with a chip I beat him in rolling start and stopped races every time. Just saying. They like to compare a down programmed 5.0 vs a twin turbo 3.5 but they never let you know the numbers once you open up and take the cuffs off of the 5.0

I don’t think it’ll hurt reliability. Honda has been doing cylinder deactivation for years and fords the most reliable American brand

The common thing in newer cars, GM and Dodge have been doing it for years and has been known to cause issues such as the dodge MDS system which destroys the lifters.

@Nacka4life Break it in like you're gonna drive it!
Not sure what y’all are talking about, what happened????

400 HP used to be a special number back in the muscle car era, but now they are pushing 600-800 HP numbers. I prefer 350-400 for that classic hold. I feel like the Coyote would have been a solid muscle engine and still is. With the Godzilla, Ford is quietly saving the V-8 legend.
At the wheels? I had a 3rd gen Camaro with close to 300whp. Surprised that car started after doing a lot of the porting myself lol! Not the fastest but the torque would throw you around between lights. Liked the L98 look too much to give it up and go LT
I own a 2021 with 5.0. In sport mode it is a rocket ship. 2,050 miles on it averaging 18.5 MPG. Not too bad.
I ordered per my spec an XLT package with the third tier trim level.
I owned a 2018, which felt cheap to the redesigned truck. Interior is nice. Luxury feel for a $54,000 truck.
Now that’s a truck worth buying! 5.0, extended cab, and bench seats! 😊
Bench seats sucks, it defeats the purpose of the tat wide front area.
@@davidzavala337 idk what a tat is but having folding bench seat up front is great for extra floor and leg and space up front or if you need to take someone in a pinch, or lie down on a trip.
@@vr4787 I just rather have that snug sporty my own space. Plus now my mother in law would want to ride and that a no no.
The 8 to 4 cylinder cruise is a great feature and goes off and on without even noticing. I have it on my C8 Corvette an it makes an economy car!
until that feature causes your engine to grenade like the silverados and camaros lol
Cool to see you guys showcasing a closer to entry level option instead of a $70,000 truck that few will buy.
Lots will buy, that’s why they make those expensive trucks
I don't know I see the platinums in the King ranch's flying off the lot Even the limited they go somebody's got money
I really like the column shifter. I feel I’m one of the only ones that prefer column shifters in trucks. Takes up less space and I grew up with trucks with column shifters. Just feels right
I like the column shifters too.🖤
I’m old enough to remember that a column shifter is classier and the floor mount is for Pintos and Tempos.
Yep. Love dodge rams but i hate how you shift with a knob. I prefer column shifter
That's the one I'd like to own. The extended cab and even the color. Nice.
Andre is by far the best guy at tfl. Very genuine!
Love the specs on the truck most of all I love that there's a column shift and not a shifting knob.
Cylinder deactivation is a joke. It doesn’t do anything but make a a engine more complex and create more problems once the engine gets age on it.
I totally agree, the thermal shock to the piston once it gets fuel again cannot be good. GM certainly had issues.
@Lukas zzstu Sikorski that’s what I’d like to know. I’ve heard that it’s all done electronically, but I’ve always heard that it’s mechanical. I can’t find any Confirmation though.
Plus, the gas mileage doesn’t really improve that much with cylinder deactivation.
@@MrKEMills I got up to 30mpg on a slight downgrade during a road trip with cylinder deactivation. But my overall fuel mileage actually improved slightly when I deactivated it.
man i never knew the f150s had this that sucks
I'm really glad a V8 is back in the lineup, but that cylinder deactivation just kills it. No one has been able to do this without problems with it. First going I'd do, deactivate that feature.
If you put in sport mode 8cyl on all the time
@@flockatron6428 Good to know!
That front grille looks really good; the color is awesome too - reminds me of the Sting Gray on my Wrangler. Coyote seems like a great motor, what a good 60 time for us up here at elevation. Nice truck, thanks for the review Andre.
Coyotes are great. I love my 2014. I also have a 2016 wrangler and cant drive to work more than 2 days without feeling miserably underpowered. Makes my truck feel that much better.lol
Got rid of my 2014 Chevy Silverado because of the cylinder deactivation and bought a 2017 Ford F150 5.0 ... best Truck I ever owned... 302A with the Sport package.

Long live the 5.0 V8! And ditch that crap deactivation. The Coyote is perfect as it is/was.
You may be able to deactivate it with a custom tune, I believe you can with the GM engines.
That moment when you say “I’ll stick with my truck because the engine is simpler”. The reference truck is a 2015...
😂😂 I have a 2016 and I love it, no bull crap sensors or “start-stop technology”.
@@ndb466 it does have a ton of sensors but doesn’t shut down half the engine for fuel economy and have 7 1/2 different driving modes lol. 10 speed transmission is not as smooth as the 6. My 2015 feels like a muscle truck compared to my 2018 work truck. 10 more hp? I don’t feel it
I love my 18. It has the 10spd and its mated to the 5.0. Currently I have 40k on the clock and it’s been serving me flawlessly. I keep up on my maintenance and I’m hoping that will give me the longevity my older ford has given me. 2005 Explorer 4.6 2v with 194k on the clock and it still drives like new
Test drove the 5.0 V8 & the 3.5L Ecoboost V6 and must admit that the Ecoboost is far smoother & enjoyable power delivery. The 5.0 is jerky in lower gears & felt considerably slower than the Ecoboost overall. I’ll be going with the 3.5L ... looking for either a Lariat or Platinum.
I think the jerkiness has to do with the cylinder deactivation. the older 5.0 and 5.4 never had this issue
I've owned two 3.5 ecoboosts and now a 5.0. The 3.5 is more powerful except for initial off the line power that the 5.0 has. All in all, the 3.5 was a better driving experience for me except for sound that that the 5.0 makes. Fuel mileage is also terrible on the 5.0 at 3 mpg less than the ecoboost.
I just traded in my 2017 3.5 XLT for a 2021 V8 Lariat. I will say, the Eco screws! Was a fun truck for 5 years! Just a heads up. Pay attention to your coolant up around 70k. Mine was leaking very slowly. Notoriously bad water pumps. It can get messy and super expensive if you start talking about internal water pump and or turbos, labor etc. Good luck!
@1970chrish I found my fuel mileage wasn't that great in my 3.5 You're right though. (All stock) 5.0's, 5.7's and Chevy 5.3's never had a chance when we left the line. Maybe for a second or 2, that was it. Then the twins kicked in and forget out it. Dude's feelings would get hurt. "Yea well it's still a piece of shit that sounds like an air fryer!" Crazy to think that this exact spec with a Lund Racing or 5 Star tune will run high 12s with no weight removed. Now that makes for an excellent no compromise work truck lol
I like the capabilities at the lower price.
Super happy Ford is putting the 5.0 in the trucks. Thanks for the review Andre and to the super things you guys at TFL do.
I love my coyote. I found a 2013 xlt back in September with 63k miles on it, couldn't pass on it. Finding a used v8 with decent milage in my area is was very difficult, the market is flooded with ecoboost.
There is a good Good reason for that
Love this package. Not a fan of cylinder deactivation. I wish Ford (and the others) would offer the higher end packages with a standard cab. If you really want to consider your vehicle an off roader, why not make shorter wheel bases options? For that matter, if you don't want to do that, you could simply offer a front locker in the FX4 package.
They are keeping torsen for Raptor/Tremor options now, don't want those XL buying peasants getting better options on lower margin trucks.
The raptor is the offroader.
LOVE my 2015 with the coyote. Works hard and runs great with over 80,000 miles. Would definitely buy another some day. Though I am real tempted to get a F-250 with Godzilla engine.
I love my ‘19 Lariat 5.0 . I had a ‘17 XLT , but I missed all the convenience options so I traded up . Not a fan of the stripped down models . If you spend a lot of time in your truck , I suggest getting the upper trim package . Trust me , you’ll be glad you did . Just stay away from the panoramic sunroof . Nothing but problems .

Wow, big surprise! If Ford didn't offer the 5L, they'd lose a lot of customers!
I doubt Ford will stop offering V8 engines as long as the competition still has them. They known the V8 has its loyalist and no amount of Ecoboost hype will sway them, aside from that they risk losing customers to GM and Ram if they drop the V8. I'd wager they'll have a V8 of some form and fashion until they replace everything with electric power.
Hearing Andre say “poosycat” is the best thing I’ve heard all day.
I don't see a good future with the cylinder deactivation. GM and Ram have a lot of problems. The people that want V8 obviously don't care about economy.
Gm doesn't have issues with cylinder deactivation anymore. That was the pre 2014 versions. Anything after 2014 are different engines and the system was improved. The #1 cause was lack of oil changes and/or not keep it topped of as the lifters are all oil activated. It also didn't help that full synthetic wasn't a requirement either. Better oils and updated tech pretty much solves the problems

When making a absolute statement it helps to irrefutable evidence to support this. What is the failure rate of multi-displacement engines vs non multi-displacement engines?
@@davidporter7051 the first thing you want to do for maximum fuel economy is get the revs down. The 4 cylinder engine in my brother's Ranger is a 2.3 L4 and lugs at 1200rpm while the 4.6 in my Thunderbird doesn't at 900.
Low revs allow lots of time to burn AF mixture with so less timing advance is required reducing back work and giving highest Mean Effective Pressure. If the engine is cold it will cause more heat transfer to the engine warming it up instead of going out the exhaust reducing cold start enrichment time. An engine in cold start enrichment usually burns 3 times as much fuel than when hot and running.

Seems like cylinder deactivation technology was bad for reliability on Chrysler and GM V8 engines. I guess time will tell if that will be true for Ford, as well. I think another reason people wanted the V8 because it was a simpler engine that had less to go wrong and was simpler to maintain relative to EcoBoost engines.
There's ways around it. Range Technology will probable sell a device to keep it in 8 like they do for GM and Dodge. I also found if I go to the manual mode on my Silverado and shift into 5th gear, it will stay in 8.
I had a 14' Sierra with 5.3L with cylinder deactivation. Put 140k problem free miles on it.
Andre, there is nothing special about Ford Leaf-Springs. That exact same leaf-spring setup was used by Wells-Fargo in the late-1800's on their stagecoaches.
Through many decades of testing the leafspring has been determined to be the premium suspension for payload and towing it’s been used since the Roman days although I do believe an air assist is good for heavy duty trucks but sometimes you pay for it and ride quality I’m in the towing industry and we hate to see a vehicle come in with coil springs they don’t have the road stability of a leaf spring
@@ripfletching Air assist is a gimmick. Especially since Ford has a history of using the cheapest parts suppliers that they can find. Those systems are expensive as hell to replace. But thanks to several class-action lawsuits, Ford has one of the best Warranties there is. Also, Nothing is more reliable than adding a good pair of shock absorbers in combination with leaf-springs.
I got a 20 5.0 because I got an insane trade in on my raptor and price on an XLT but also because I knew the 21 would have cylinder deactivation. Doubt it saves any fuel. Just adds complexity and probably less reliable. Also I did a muffler delete on mine. Sounds great.
How do you like it compared to the raptor?? Not sure what to go with
@@BeastModeFitness11 it does save fuel if you Cruze it lol in eco and then do pulls switch it to sport haha
Not digging the cylinder deactivation... :-)
If you tap the traction control button twice you get Advance Trac sport mode... At least that is what comes with the turbo charged 3.5L. It takes all the delays off and in 4H she rips it up .... And I love the sound of that Coyote motor. The 3.5 sounds like a diesel in Sport mode.... Ford makes a great truck...
Chevrolet has had trouble with their cylinder deactivation stuff but if I had to choose between two AFM equipped v-8s, it's gonna be the folks who have more experience with them.
Honestly, the cylinder deactivation made my decision for me on my next truck. I will be going 3/4 ton. I prefer to not have to worry about internal engine failure due to emissions nonsense. An 8 cylinder engine is not built to run on 4 cylinders. I’m not buying the truck for fuel efficiency.
I am a mechanical engineer and I know engine technology has come a long way... but I still can't shake the thought that cylinder deactivation makes the engine unreliable. That and start-stop technology too. I know beefed up starters, hardened cylinder liners.... I just can't help it.
That's why you immediately tune it to turn all that crap off.
I actually attach your heater core tubes to the HVAC system for this truck. We do great quality work our people are great putting your HVAC system together for this truck.
Really loving this truck, it’s got everything you need and nothing you don’t, and that beautiful sounding v8 just makes it perfect. With a few bolt-ons this thing will happily keep up with the 3.5 ecoboost.
Wow, that sounds amazing!
No cylinder deactivation just something else to go wrong
People buy based on spec sheets now, they see a GM or RAM with cylinder deactivation the Ford without and that is the decision maker for them. What I would say is Ford waited a long, long time to implement this and has had time to benefit from everyone else's lessons' learned.
@@Steve-yr5vi got it is ford playing follow the leader ive rebuild the hemi 5.7 the chevy 6.0 with cylinder deactivation and its all bad news im sure i will be rebuilding Ford's 5.0 soon what ever happened to naturally aspirated V8 and not caring about how much gas it's going to use all the bells and whistles just something else to go wrong got an old 57 Chevy with a 350 in it runs like a champ a little zinc additive every now and then pulls what it needs to and works like a horse but I get you everyone wants all the bells and whistles nowadays I guess it's just the time we're in now
they have cam kits where you can get rid of the deactivation. cylinder deactivation works by shifting the cam lobes around, as you can imagine not very reliable
Chevy cylinder deactivation has been around for over a decade and wasn't an issue for me. Many many many many many many other parts failed first. I think synthetic oil and midgrade gas help longevity. Just like auto stop start I found cylinder deactivation was hardly used under normal use. Either by air or heat settings, passing and keeping up with traffic. It's mostly off.
Oh man...STX, 4x4, extended cab, 5.0, Lead Foot paint...STOP TEASING ME! That’s basically the EXACT truck that I want to get! Only things I would add is the full center console and 3.73 rear gears. I can’t wait to get mine this year, hopefully within the next few months! Always enjoy your content, much love from Texas!
Just ordered one. 5.0 supercab 4x4 xl. Ordering my truck allowed me to create the perfect truck with the options I wanted. I'll never buy one off a lot again. Total was 41350
You know one of the things I have noticed since I moved up north to South Dakota is how many vehicles are rusted out especially it seems like Toyota and ram they rust so rapidly and Chevrolets rust around the fenders very badly I can’t help but notice when I pull up the stop lights the forwards with their aluminum bodies still look new and they might be 10 years old I think it’s pretty impressive how they retain their integrity and looks so nice after so many years this was a selling point for me after I moved up north and decided to purchase an aluminum body Truck and I absolutely love it I have a 2015 F150 and it still looks like knew some of my coworkers trucks are already rusted and have traded
Just remember, the steel bits underneath still rust. Get it Krown Coated on a schedule.
@@lppuckster1298 Yes I wish I had I keep pretty good tabs on it and it looks good but I wish I had protected it when I first purchased this truck I will the next one
@@ripfletching You can do it at any time in a vehicles’s life to help stop rust from advancing. Any treatment will help. Krown is just one of the most prevalent. Mustie1 (You Tuber in NH) uses bar and chain oil!
@@lppuckster1298 thank you
i buy the por15 in spray cans and coat my frame every year looks like new
Would be a beast with a supercharger or a twin turbo setup.
Raptor and Raptor “R” is coming
I don’t understand why there is about 2k charge for a V8 on a full size truck.
To discourage your purchase of it over to the V6.
Isn’t cylinder deactivation a large factor to figure engine failure? I feel like I’ve seen that a lot with the Chevy motors and de activation plays a role in that. Any thoughts? I can’t pick between getting the 5.0 or powerboost
Just wanted to make sure I saw this right. You selected 4H on a paved road under full throttle. Was there any driveline stress? You really should only do that with a 4A transfer case.
I’ve always said this, as a GM guy I must admit the move ford did to put a popular motor on a popular truck is a money move. For sure catching the eyes of enthusiasts like it’s nothing. Plus since it’s a de tuned version of the mustangs coyote, once it’s out the truck it really makes it a little more affordable to purchase
I had a 2.7 and 3.5, know that I got the 2021 V8 xlt Sport with the max tow package I love it I dont want no more ecoboost, so much better sound and aceleration, I been getting 18mpg city and 22 highway just like sticker says
2.7 is quickest, and from a roll and go the 5.0 is toast. Please tell the truth and stop the BS
lmao acceleration is faster on the EB's
If they are gonna do cylinder deactivation please give us the ability to permanently turn it off via tha dash menus as well as the ability to kill start/stop
Exactly!
Waiting on the 6.8. Cylinder deact was a long time coming!
You better bet your ass that if the 6.8L materializes into a reality it will 100% have cylinder deactivation. There's no way Fords going to offer a larger displacement OHV design engine in the F-150 without it.
@@nathanmcdonald610 Yeah probably, but if a "6.8" IS made, it is not replacing the, 5.0, Unifor has signed a deal with Ford for the continued manufacturing of the 5.0 at their Essex engine plant, where they currently make over 300,000 of them a year, it might be the new Raptor engine if it's not the 5.2 Predator, or it might be simply a replacement for the aging 6.2 Superduty engine.
"They gave it cylinder deactivation."
Oh God, why? Ford... Bro... Don't add GM's problems to your own!
Ford already has enough.
IDK man, the GM v8's with AFM or DFM are more reliable than the 2018+ 5.0 for sure. Hopefully Ford fixed all the other issues
@@mikew9146 no they are not, I can’t tell you how many fail before 80,000 miles, just put a motor in an 18 Silverado. Tick tick tick boom
@@freedomisntfree_44 Not saying they're invincible but they don't have a failure rate of the 5.0 after the 2018 update. There are no widespread failures on the gen 5 5.3
@@mikew9146 between transmission going out and lifter failure they do, 5.0 isn’t ever in the shop. The 5.3 is a cheap pos
That’s actually something I’d buy. Reg can is too small, 4 full size doors is too big and ridiculously long if you get an 8ft bed.
That's quite a handsome truck, glad they didn't go berzerk on a tall front grille or whatever.
XL w/ STX pkg is the way to go. Love those 20’s...
That's the exact model I would get. I don't need all that fancy stuff to break.
Prefer the 3.5 Ecoboost, but for those that like the V8, it was a good test! I prefer better fuel mileage over sound these days, and the Ecoboost is a beast in towing, for those that want to do so. Great numbers for all the Ford gas engines now indeed....thanks for a nice review/video! Oh, and I prefer the Supercrew...but that's a personal choice we all have to make.
Alot of power great fuel economy but I got news for ya its gonna stay in the shop broke down because of those turbos they just dont last
Those five ohs are known for having many issues @@slabbusterrtr7690
Andre......Please do a video showing us how to deactivate the cylinder deactivation feature. Thanks and love the video.
I have a 2013 F150 coyote with just a borla atak cutback and a k&n cold air no tune yet and it's still very snotty. I'm more than impressed. Loaded lariat supercrew cab.
