Lay square gate frame over the top of diagonal and scribe

Build your frame of your gate. Place your diagonal board across your frame and mark with a pencil. Done. Don’t need any calculator to get your angles. Good Luck !!!

Nice information. We can talk about diagonal braces and support configurations for the gate itself til the cows come home, but the gate WILL sag EVERY time unless you Tap Con the 4x4 post to the house and mount the hinges on that side of the gate. Otherwise, that 4x4 with the gate hanging on it (even if the post is mounted in concrete) WILL BEND like a rocking chair
over time and will be a constant maintenance problem.

Yeah or just put the board on the angles and mark them but yeah

Ahhh yes..I put my brace in the right direction. I used a trig calculator and found my angles and length but it didn't come out as good as I hoped but made it work.

Be sure your diagonal does not exceed 45 degrees. If you have a wide gate such as a drive through gate or a big swing gate then put a vertical board at the halfway or 1/3 mark and then install multiple 45 degree braces

should the lower portion of the brace be on on the crossbeam and not the upright? I have seen it more commonly that way.

More surface area having the brace pushing against the upright than just the toe against the upright. But, do it how you feel best works for you.

Amateur question...once you've got everything cut at the right lengths and angles.... what's the best way to nail or screw it together?

I used pocket hole screws and glue. I placed them facing the gate boards.

Also, if the gate has to be hung on a post, the rule of thumb is three. Two lengths above ground and one length below
