Hi Dustin, the gate brace needs to come from the outer top corner down to the inside bottom corner at the bottom hinge. This is the strongest part of the fence post. By doing it this way you transfer the weight of the gate down to the bottom hinge where you have the strongest support to help hold it up for the long haul. You do great videos keep up the good work.

The best how to build a gate currently on UA-cam. Easy to understand. Love the editing to make it time efficient. I did catch the brace was on backwards and corrected that. My son and I were able to follow the step-by-step instructions in this video and build our gate with ease. Would love to see more how to videos from this guy!
Hey cat! Thanks so much. The backwards brace worked awesome. 5 years old and no sag!! Thanks for sharing. Much more in the home mender community ! Thehomemenders.com would love to have you!
THAT is the way to do a video.....straight talk....only pertinent info, and no bullshizzle.....and yes....a command of his tools...lmbo..preciate it man
Thank you very much sir. I'm going to have to save this video for tomorrow when I build my gate so I can watch it step by step. You truly seem like a man who knows his profession.
I did it with my fence's gate after I watched several times of your video. It was easy and save me money from gate's kits installer. I like the frame; it appears as professional built that what my friends and relatives said. They could not believe i built it. they know I never done it before. Thanks video
Different but it works. looks good to. I'm a veteran remodel/renovation carpenter and unless you have specific instructions always take the rasy road was long as it works right and it looks like it was meant to be done.
Yep. That brace is bass ackwards. As a custom gate builder in OKC I see this mistake made time and time again perhaps run a turnbuckle along it and act as if you meant to do it!
I am a disable woman and I hired a team of guys in Dec 2016 to put up $3800.00 worth of privacy fencing around my backyard. They were suppose to come back this Spring to make me a gate large enough to get my lawn tractor through. They have declined several times to return. Now i am left with making the gate myself. I want to thank you for your clear instructions on this. I will try to get it done myself. I only need a 48" wide gate. I hope i can handle it.
Home Mender Inc Well today is the day I am going to give it a go. Only thing, I am not sure how will get the second post into the ground of get the gate back up in place. it will be heavier with the extra 2x4's on it. Wish you were here!!
Ellen Robison hi Ellen! You can do it! Usually I just set the gate in place and set it on the thickness of a 2x4 to leave it an inch or so off the ground. Then secure the hinges and remove the board! You can do it!
@@homemend It doesn't work, "as long as it's secured with no play." Physics will eventually take over and gravity, along with centripetal force, will cause that thing to sag.
@KGSJR that's what I was thinking. I've heard that wood braces should be in compression meaning going from the top of the swing side towards the bottom of the hinge side. Metal braces, in tension, meaning from the bottom of the swing side to the top of the hinge side. This prevents sagging. Either way, good video and nice finish product. Thanks for posting it.
Nice video Dustin! When i build a garden gate I like to use redwood or cedar instead of fir for the frame work since they are more stable. Fir tends to warp and twist when it gets dried out by the sun. Also the diagonal brace on the gate is a great idea but i would flip it around having it run from the top latch side to the bottom hinge side and put 2 screws on every board into the brace. Gravity is pulling down on the gate and there is more strength when it wants to drop and push against the hinge post.
Greetings from North Pole Alaska! Planning on replacing the existing "Box Store Fence in a Box" set up with a fence made of White Spruce (stain/ paint of course). Your video on building a gate has answered many questions I had, was easy to understand and to the point. Since our construction season is very short (It starts to snow in Sept and doesn't go away until Apr/ May) I want to make sure I know what needs to be done early so I can hit the ground running. Keep up the great work and know that your videos make a difference! Thanks a bunch!
You are awesome Linda! Im well aware! ive done 3 years in wasilla and anchorage. Would love to see your project on instagram! Thank you so much for the encouraging comments! So happy it worked out and thanks for watching!
Great Video, I'm going to cut the extra fence panel so we can build our gate like you did on the video. Our neighbors old fence post is above the ground so we have figure out where our new post will go and resize the gate door..! Thanks
True---the brace needs to be in compression, not tension, otherwise there will be tensile loading on the screws that secure the brace---over time they will loosen & the fence will sag or pull apart (esp if kids ride it, which they always do). Everything else in the clip looks ok...
Awesome , only thing you should do on the gate different is the diagonal. You want it under compression. Mount it hinge side in on bottom. It’s pushing on it instead of pulling.
I'm feeling so sad because my first gate I'm putting down for my dog will be as ugly as the original in this video! I'm a new builder (though I have experience with power tools from my sculpture days.) Anyway, I am learning and appreciate the advice! Videos like this are a lifesaver.
Thanks for the video! I was able to follow your simple step by step and make my first gate! However, you made it look way more easy that it was! Course, it might have just been me!
hey Jay! Not sure we have a setting post video.. we have some how to set posts, but not where to place them... pretty simple.. 8' on center post to post. I hope this helps! thanks jay
Hey Dustin how you doing sir happy Easter I forgot to tell you thank you so very much. Any excuse I can use to not use a table saw, I take. They’re more dangerous imo. Especially with framing lumber.

The brace should go from the top outside corner, to the bottom inside (hinge side) corner.
@@ekapilot ahhhh... Thank you for your reply!
@@DeNiLe_ the top end of the cross brace should be at the outside edge of the gate
