SURABAYA, INDONESIA - Today we’re going to eat some of the best food in Surabaya from the island of Madura!
Huge thank you to Budi Tarjo: / indonesiadiscoverer (He offers incredible tours in Indonesia), for taking me around Surabaya!
Madura is an island located right across a small channel of water from the main Java island of Indonesia and from Surabaya. So within the major city of Surabaya you’ll find many people from Madura and a huge selection of Madura food. Food in Madura is famous around Indonesia - for example one of the most common versions of satay (sate) is Madura Sate. Today we’re going to eat five unique Madura foods, that you don’t want to miss.
Soto Madura Imam Bonjol (maps.app.goo.gl/7xWi7YgrAGxCM...) - Soto Madura is a beef soup, commonly eaten for breakfast, and it’s one of the best soups I’ve had. So good and so flavorful.
Warung Kongde Mbak May (maps.app.goo.gl/Ss6T6zWADj1Sb...) - Welcome to probably the funniest food stall in all of Surabaya, maybe in all of Indonesia!? Warung Kongde Mbak May serves Madura style rice and mixed dishes and the flavors are spicy and intensely flavorful.
Bubur Madura - Typically you think of rice porridge as savory, but this rare Madura style of rice porridge is sweet, with a variety of jellys and palm sugars. It’s quite a complex and delicious dessert.
Sate Ayam Madura Pak Mat (maps.app.goo.gl/8ACpuUikkH3k4...) - You can’t go on a Madura street food tour without eating Madura sate (satay), a type of sate preparation that’s commonly found all over Indonesia.
Nasi Bebek Pak Sayeki (maps.app.goo.gl/EnnK4amRYQafo...) - Next up we’re on our way to a Indonesia food truck that specializes in another Madura delicacy; Bebek Hitam - Fried duck with fried blackened spices.
Surabaya is a food haven, and they are well represented by Madura Indonesian food!

@@TheYoungteenager I'm not sure the tour guide leader will think like that🤔 I saw Mark's head gesture when he tried some food. It's like very common food, not something special, I guess. Been in the UK, Japan, and South Korea for a while and I have to say this, Indonesian Foods (and lots of South east Asian countries) are waaay above the rest. Especially the spicy ones. Yes it is spicy as hell but tastier! So much flavor than just garlic or soy sauce or kimchi. Indonesia is my catalyst for not just having fish n chips my whole life. You are an inspiration, Mark!

The country is rich with culture, friendly people, food and natural resources.

Mark, this Indonesia series is Awesome! What i actually do when making Soto Ajam? Is perhaps a bit 'Out of the box Thinking..' : I make a 'bold flavoured' Soto Ajam broth, AND a 'bold flavoured' Soto Madura broth. I combine bóth broths (Soups) Ratio 2 parts Soto Ajam & 1 part Soto Madura in one pot.. It's Delicious Deluxe!! Add cubes of boiled Egg, Potatoes, Taugè (Bean sprouds), fried onions, chopped leek/sellery, maybe some fried Tahu cubes. And the shredded Chicken meat.. It's Yummy!!! And that Food at "Warung Kongde" looks Mouthwatering! Greetz from The Netherlands...

You should try one more Sate style if you are still in East Java, try one of the most famous Sate styles Sate Ponorogo. Ponorogo Sate's style is unlike any others. The chicken is caramelised with spices and sweet soy sauce and eaten with thick and spicy peanut sauce. Because of the caramelization, it can hold up to three days or more, so people often buy it as a gift to bring it to their home town. The uniqueness does not end there; this Sate only cooked with local species of chicken, or "Ayam Kampung" in Indonesia. The famous one is "Sate Ayam Ponorogo Haji Tukri Sobikun".

You might want to try a porridge called bubur manggul. It's originated from madura but not many people make it anymore. I tried this porridge in Surabaya actually and it's even more rare there. I only know 1 seller that sell this porridge by moving around with their cart so I need to wait for the seller to pass by if want to buy it. It's basically a savory porridge, the basic porridge is from coconut milk and taste rather plain. This basic porridge then topped with a more savory porridge made from alot of spices like tumeric, ginger, pepper, galango, cumin, and red chilly and sometimes shrimp head is added as a natural MSG. After that, a soybean powder is added to give a hint of sweetness in it. Believe me it taste heavenly.

Mark when explaining how great a fish is, uses an array of English vocab words that he knows no one around him will understand but they will be overjoyed when they catch words like "so good" and read his expressive actions.

Hey Mark. Really thrilled you are giving these food that carries so much heritage and culture with such a vibrant approach and appreciation. As a local and as someone who grew up abroad, the level of delicacy can only be adequately justified by experiencing it first hand. However, do watch out for the excessive vitamin A intake those innards contain tons of it. Just concerned what it does to your body, especially the fact that they are addictive 😆Been enjoying all of your Surabaya tour. Been a fan since the formative years of your channel. Sending some love!

I remember one of my high school friends was a Madurese person, and he often gave us Madurese food when we came over to his house. It was so delicious.
Sadly, we haven’t spoken to each other after that because we went to different colleges. 😅
Great video as always, Mark. ❤
