I tried to make this my most comprehensive video in regards to dropping some knowledge for y'all!
James, you are the best on this area. Your videos should be a "school" to all photographers starting to shoot sports, or dance, or anithing, with flashes
@@bluewater68 Thanks Blue!
Really enjoyed it 🙏🏾
Love your videos, can you clarify why you choose to use 4 lights for edge/rim - you mentioned 2 umbrellas and 2 reflectors, why not just two lights? Thank you very much!
I so enjoy making epic images and the elements you have added (smoke...stadium-like lighting) and showing how each light has a purpose really challenges me to learn light more and HOW to get to these type results. I SO appreciate you and being comfortable enough to share your many years of experimentation to get here.
The insane part is that you unpacked all this information but made it easy to understand as an extreme beginner
Thank you!
YOUR LIGHTING IS GENIUS JAMES
Appreciate that Don!
We all appreciate the time and energy you put into sharing your knowledge with the community.
I appreciate that!
Excellent BTS, many thanks for making and sharing this!!!
Love it James! Keep 'Em Coming!
Outstanding!
Fantastic info. Thx!
Thank you James for sharing knowledge. Always such great content, this BTS is on another level. Much appreciated!
Thanks Leo!
Awesome info as always! 🐐
Thank you!
Great BTS vid! Love your work and it's great to see how you light these photos
James. Can’t thank you enough for these videos. Sharing this type of knowledge and setup is so appreciated.
My pleasure!
Thank you! Awesome video as always. I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to help out other photographers.
Thanks Dan!
You really help get the creative juices flowing. Thank you.
Glad to hear it!
You the man for this one 🤝💪🤘
Thanks Zack!
Really nice set up. Great idea =)
Thanks!
Awesome work as usual. Thanks for sharing the lighting setup and rational as well as examples from your session.
Thanks Chuck!
Amazing!!
Thanks Martin!
Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
You are a fantastic wealth of knowledge and I appreciate the time you put into these tutorials.
Thanks Nacho! 🔫🔫
Thank you for sharing this information! This is so valuable and we are grateful for your willingness to share it!
Glad it was helpful!
Love it. I love the way you
Explain how and why. ❤
Thanks Stacy!
Very thorough, and you answered my question about the umbrellas perfectly, thanks!
Awesome!
Good stuff James!
Thank you!
This was very helpful. Thank you!
So glad!
Awesome! Youre a genius sir! Thanks for sharing your brain with us!
Thanks Justin!
Thanks for this video so much information and knowledge, great done. Cheers from Sweden ✌️🙂
Always!!
Another great video, I really appreciate the extra effort in detailing the thought process and build up. Would also love the editing tips. I always feel claustrophobic in my garage studio but the generative fill is going to be a life saver to “expand” my set.
Noted!
Great stuff! I'm using the Pro Light Mods for the first time tonight!
Good luck - make sure to watch the "Mastering Pro Light Mods" video if you have a few minutes!
@@QuantzPhoto Doing that now actually. 😂
Can’t wait to see the finished images! I just got a set of Wescott FJ lights and I’m loving them. Go Gamecocks!
Right on!
Nice Intro. Viewer approved ... great videos.
Ha, thanks Monte!
Good tips on the Canon glass. I held on to my EF 24-70 2.8, but opted to go with the RF 24-105 when I bought my mirrorless setup. Maybe look at getting some PVC pipes to slide over your Xdrop legs as an extension piece.
Once again you knock it out with sharing your knowledge. I can’t thank you enough on how much you’ve helped.question though have you thought about RGB lights? As an added affect or even with smoke in place of a gel light? You’re thoughts and advice are always appreciated 😊
Thank you for all you share. As usual, great stuff! Love the stadium look!! And the most brilliant hack yet - the FJ400 cases put to good use. I have to try that next time.
Thanks for watching!
Dud you rock
🤟🤟
Thanks for showing us your setup! I just found your channel, excited to go through the rest. Do you offer classes?
Thanks - just UA-cam currently!
Thank you for sharing this! I'm still working w/ a 4 light setup, 2 of which i'm using on 1x4 PLMs when using them, but this definitely gave me some ideas. And YES, I'd love to see some video of the tweaks you're making to these images (i.e. curves, etc.). Thanks again! @timbrantphotography
This is a great video and breakdown of your lighting. A+!! My question is: Are the lights above the backdrop constant or are all the lights flash? Thanks. You have gained a new subscriber. Keep the vids coming.
They're all strobes!
Great video! Would love love to see just a quick tutorial on how you use Photoshop to remove things like the ceiling and reflectors out of your shots.
Great suggestion!
@@QuantzPhoto It would be so helpful. I'm a hobbyist with limited room and always trying to force the composition. Also picked up 2 1X4s with the Pro Light Mods a few weeks ago. They are absolutely awesome! Creative and Innovative - congrats!
This is part of why I like the Godox units is the ability to run the extension cable and keep the body mounted low.
Well I could've plugged in those FJ400's but just didn't feel like running a cable to the back of the setup.
Thanks for sharing. Love the insight! With the 24-70mm do you stay within a certain range?
Great question - I probably try to stay as close to 70mm as I can to avoid too much distortion.
Thanks James. Your videos are great, the photos even better. For someone without a big budget, or any budget at all, would the 200s be powerful enough to get started? Even at that I don’t expect to get more than 2 lights to begin.
Absolutely!
@@QuantzPhoto thank you. I actually just watched another of your BTS videos where you talk about your first real experience with the 200 and how much you liked it.
Thanks again James for another wonderful video.
I also have an old iMac, but now I bring a MacBookPro 16" to the shootings and the screen is just perfect, I don't think I'll go back to iMac. Have you tried with the 16" instead of 14"?
About ideas for another video: I would love to see you working with an economic set up, for those of us who can only afford 4 lights for example.
Thanks Fernando, yeah that's a 16" that I have. Check my video catalog since I do have a 2 - light tutorial.
Does the Canon R5 and the FJ400 allow you to shoot in HSS? I'm curious as to how you get your flash to shoot multiple times. I have the R3 and can't seem to figure it out. Thanks!
Awesome work, and BTS... At ISO 400 what aperture and shutter speed were you using? Do you shoot in HSS or do you typically try to avoid that?
You can't really rely on HSS with so many strobes plus you over work the batteries.
Was the overall look your concept and you pitched it to the client, or did they give you some ideas for you to work on executing? Great shots!
After doing this for so many years I can of know what they'll like and they trust me! ; )
Great work! I have a question about the action shots. You said you used the native 1/200th shutter. Was that the same for the action shots, or did you switch the lights to high speed sync? If you kept it at 1/200th, how did you avoid blur?
Yes 1/200 for action and I'm using the short flash duration of the strobes to freeze the action.
Love your videos, James! Quick question about the fog machine and fluid. I just ordered the fog machine last night and curious what fluid do you use. I see they have an Eco or a Premium. What do you use? I'll be using in high school settings. Thanks for all you do.
I used Froggy's Quickblast for this last shoot and it seemed to work well amzn.to/4dvxBej
@@QuantzPhoto Thank you for the quick response! I absolutely love your videos and have learned so much from them. Especially love watching how you edit an image.
Wish they made a larger Xdrop Pro! Maybe since you've mentioned it they will. And I have that smoke machine but I am so nervous to use it indoors in school sports setups. Have you ever had issues or am I worried for nothing?
I gave them my input but those backdrops worked just fine being "lifted"! 🤣 Also I'm no expert with smoke and alarms...🚒
Yea I’d think those bed risers would work well to just rise em up
Can you Rell me what was the frog juice you used
Bog Fog I believe..🐸
On your tether set up what software do you use? I would love to know how to do this
CaptureOne
How long does the smoke take dissipate? do you use that as last shots for the player to give it time to dissipate before next player starts?
It just depends on where you're conducting your shoot. In this space since it was a huge indoor building the smoke moved out really quickly.
Were u using the RF 24-70 or ef with adapter ? Thanks
RF!
Question do you make them take off the visors of the athlete's helmets?
If they do not how do you avoid light reflections appearing?
Football visors normally aren’t a problem but at this level the only guy with a visor is the player we photograph strictly for graphic type stuff.
What make & model for your smoke machine?
It’s in the video and linked in the description. 🤷♂️
Do you try and keep the same focal length during the entire shoot? Or are you zooming in and out
I'm zooming depending on the composition!
The other use for ISO 400...If you need to tweak the exposure +/- , you can change the ISO and keep the same f-stop and aperture, then reset when needed. No brainer.
True!
Have you ever had an issue with smoke detectors and the fog? I was in a building once that had optical smoke detectors and fog set off the alarms.
Hey Tony, I haven't but you'll want to check out the space you're conducting your shoot in!
Setup like this begs you have small group/position group photos. Would love to see if you did any of that. Often times transitioning from individual to groups is a novice challenge
Good point and I probably should've mentioned that this setup is also great for multiple people.
What kind of filter pro mist? Black
1/8 Black - it's linked in the description, btw!
you switched from Profoto didn't you? Did you have problems? Just wondering. I'm having major problems with my B1x's and looking maybe to switch.
Yes I've pretty much switched to Westcott since partnering up with them with the Pro Light Mods!
@@QuantzPhoto AHHH, ok.. I have had major problems lately :(
