The sight of him splashing through that water under his twelve stone six and going flat out over those last few fences is a remarkable sight. And probably will never be seen again. He probably meant the front running flyingbolt would have set a blistering pace, Arkle tucked in behind, then done him on the run in. Mill House who taaffe was recorded as saying was the second best he rode, Tried and failed with these tactics.... miserably!!!Mi
@@beverleymorris167 - 1 watched a replay the other day of the 1965 King George at Kempton. While you can marvel at the magnificent brilliance of Arkle, the race was badly marred by the tragic death of Dunkirk. Well, Timeform had Arkle 2 pound better than Flyingbolt, perhaps that was about right.

Incidentally Buonna notte, of Massey Ferguson fame, beat Dunkirk as novices..... That shows what a task Arkle had in that Massey Ferguson! Giving nearly 2 stone to that horse, only seven days after trouncing mill House in Hennessy giving him weight!
I watched this race live on TV and have never forgotten the deep impression it made on me. I personally doubt there has ever been another steeple chaser born who would have beaten Flyingbolt that day.
Arkles Gallagher was better performance...the greatest of all time.... flyingbolt could have been flattered a bit by the going... described on the day as the worst ever seen.. flyingbolt loved heavy. Brilliant performance still though.

I HAVE STUDIES THOUSANDS OF RACES IN THE 60’S 70’S AND 80’S AND IM CONVINCED THE CHAMPION HORSES FROM THAT ERA WERE FAR BETTER THAN THOSE OF TODAY. FLYINGBOLT WAS A CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS AND IF YOU DISECT HIS FORM IN DETAIL THAN ITS VERY CLOSE TO ARKLES. GREAT GREAT MEMORIES AND THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEOS
Sprinter Sacre and Flyingbolt were the greatest two-mile chasers I have ever seen. But I doubt that ANY horse could emulate Flyingbolt's performance of finishing third in the 1966 Champion Hurdle after destroying the Two Mile Champion chase field (QMCC) just 24 hours previously. Flyingbolt was a truly phenomenal chaser.

Not according to Liam McLoughlin or Paddy Woods who also rode both of them at home, don't have to ride them in races to know which was better, Liam won a bumper on Flyingbolt first time out at Navan, the same day T P Burns won on Arkle over 1m 5f, Arkle never won a bumper. The Duchess had a lot to say about where and when Flyingbolt ran, as long as it wasn't against her lad. And as for Pat Taaffe's book she dictated what was written in it..

I was at Haydock one foggy January afternoon and was lucky enough to watch this superhorse take the water jump in front of the stands and win in a canter for Barry Brogan and Ken Oliver. I will never forget it.
3rd January 1969 Haydock Park 2 mile Gamekeepers Handicap Chase,won 4 lengths carrying 12st 7lb 4 ran,and there was a water jump in front of the stands,it was a spectacle,the water jump has since been removed.
I was talking with Barry Brogan last evening, Barry rode both Arkle and Flying Bolt at work. He suggested that Flying Bolt was actually a better horse than Arkle and if had been allowed by trainer Tom Dreaper to run in the 1966 Gold Cup alongside his stablemate he would have beaten the great Arkle.
Given what happened the only time they jumped fences together on the gallops, I'm glad Tom Dreaper and both owners had more sense than to ever let them meet in a race. It could only ever have ended one way. One horse would win - the other would be dead.

Many of Arkle's performances were similar in terms of merit. Not easy to say who was the better of the two.
