    Most of my hair is about 5 inches or so and I started them with twist and rip method about a month ago. The shorter hair fell out but the rest is actually dreading pretty well! Your videos will be helping me for a while haha.

    im really considering dreads. my hair has lots of volume and is very soft. Even tho im a guy all of my female friends are jelly. Its really hard to style my hair in the way i like it and the fact that with dreads i can just get up and go. My hair is almost to my back and my bangs are covering my eyes. If you start dreadlocks at a short length, like 6 inches, will you have to continue to do the dreadlock method as your hair grows, or will your hair grow into the dreadlocks? Your videos are very helpful thank you!

    So I jumped the gun and started with twist and rip with a bit less than 6 inches, I have some reallly great starter dreads, but I have even more that have washed out... should I start over now that my hair is a good bit longer, OR should I be patient and just wait until new dreads form all on there own. I hear about the messy stage, but I don't know how to judge whether or not I'm in a messy stage or I'm in a failing stage. What should I do?! remove them and re-dread them all, I also think my sectioning would be much better this way. OR can I just leave it all and wait it out?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Vapur13 If the dreadlocks loosen so much that they fall back to free hair with no apparent sectioning, then they would need redoing. If the hair still remains sectioned, then it would not need redoing. I however wouldn't have recommended trying to twist and rip hair of only 6 inches.

      With T&R you usually won't notice much length loss right away, but over the following months they will shrink up like all locks do. How much is impossible to say as it differs from person to person with thinner, longer hair generally losing more % than shorter, thicker hair. I would imagine you'd lose more than 5 inches, but only time will tell!

    My hair is about 4 inches and I have begun wool rubbing it all day while I work, sit at home, etc. I can already feel my hair knotting and forming and its all sticking up. I am going for a messier, natural look as it grows. Is this a good method? As it grows more I will be starting to separate them and palm roll, etc.

  • @kaikkimeni2519
    @kaikkimeni2519 7 років тому +1

    I started at 10cm, 15cm would've been a lot easier. Caucasian hair pretty much needs palmrolling which is very hard with very, very short dreads -> this causes the need for a ton of maintenance, especially if you start them like I did, without chemicals and rubberbands and just with plain hair and crochet hook. You can expect your dreads to be pointy often during the first months of having them, because the roots keep getting tighter over time and the dreads simply don't have enough mass to keep them down. The moment you finally have enough length/mass it's heaven but the second wave of problems begins, the biggest one of them being the front hair too short. You can't pull it back to rubberband it with the rest of the hair so you need to pull them to a series of multiple smaller parts and then pull the parts back. Another annoyance of the just wrong sized dreads is the way the tips keep poking your eyes, every fking time! And if you have glasses, expect to clean them often because the dread is just the right size to keep wiping on the lenses . . and since it's too short to pull back, you can kinda see the annoyance it can become - but fear not, just another year and you won't even remember you had the problem. When you finally have really long dreads, they're really annoying to sleep with. So you pull them up and when you do, they crawl out of the bed. So. Keep your floors clean or else your dreads will do that for you, leading to that amazingly fresh look which everyone swears dreads are supposed to have, even if not many people have actually ever seen really dirty dreads (:

    Once your dreadlocks are formed and they begin to grow out, how do you get the new hair growing from your scalp to form together since you can no longer use the methods you used to form your dreadlocks? Is it just that since the hair below it is already knotted and formed it will just follow suit in it's own natural way? Looking to start my dreads soon, thanks a ton.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Johnest Mofo If you start dreadlocks with hair that is layered - the hair that is too short to knot can come loose out of the dread and just sort of float loose around the dreads... like a shorter hair cut with dreads growing out of it... it's recommended to wait until the hair is long enough.

      jacoreyious walker It depends on the method you're going to use - if you are going to naturally freeform the hair into dreadlocks, then you'll need to stop combing. If you're going to use a starting method such as backcomb or twist & rip etc - then you'll want to continue combing until it's time to start them.

      Rob Thompson With Caucasian hair 6 is inches is a safe length to go from for most methods - I know some have started with 4, but the shorter the hair, the higher risk of them washing out - however with African textured hair there are other methods available that will work with shorter hair - it all comes down to which method is to be used.

    Hey! I got a question :)
    I had dreads for 3 years and I cutted them 2 months ago (my hair was damaged and didn't grew cause I dyed it too much).
    So now I'm growing my hair.
    My hair has never been so healthy like now and I never want do use chemicals anymore and never wanna dye it again.
    So my question is; I've got straight hair and now it's 2-3 cm how long will it take to start free form dreads? +/- 2 years (shoulder length) that I can start with them? I prefer natty dreads cause I love loops but there will be more shrinking right? And I heard it's better to start dreads at a short length than long? Is that also for free form or do I better wait till my hair passed my shoulders?
    I never want to use shampoo or anything else, doesn't matter how long it will take I cutted my dreads for a reason and I'm longing for healthy pure dreads.

    Great video, my question would be... The front of my hair is shorter then the middle back of my head, the front is about 8 inchs, and middle & back are 13 inchs, should I trim my hair? Thx

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      I wouldn't bother trimming it - the longer, the better. The longer the hair, the more knots can form in it. Once everything starts to form and lock up the differences in hair length will not be noticeable as everything shrinks and tightens anyway.

    I have very thick afro hair and when i pull a single hair out it's twice the length of the apperance of my regular hair at first glance. Should i say that the length of a single strand is how long my hair is or should i go with what it looks like normally which is basically half of a strand of hair straightened out?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Itachi8 You would measure it by using it's length while straight.

    my hair is about 4 inches long and I twisted and riped a few sections on the back of my head about 2 months ago and they have shrunk about 1 inch already, should i leave them in or wash them out and start again when there longer???????

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      If you've already started them and they haven't washed out then there would be no benefit to take them out to start over - unless you are unhappy with the sizing or positioning / sectioning.

    I put a couple dreads on the bottom layer of my hair around my neck area. I watched videos of all the different methods and I chose to do the twist and rip because I thought it would be the best for my hair. I don't know if I did it right, my hair is very thick and wavy and it just seems that they aren't knotted up enough. I put small rubber bands on the top of the dread ( I wasn't sure wether or not I was supposed to do that) but it seems like it holds it all in place?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      8plutten The longer it is, the easier it will be to work with. If it's longer than 6 inches, you can give it a go - it will be long enough to freeform or to backcomb.

    I have a question. I have 6 inches on the top of my head as I had a long hairstyle, but the sides are still too short to do anything with at the moment (especially at the bottom near my neck and ears). Would it be wise to wait until the sides have grown to 6 inches too? Thanks.

    • @zariamaxwell9892
      @zariamaxwell9892 7 років тому

      Nadja Extraordinary - it is possible to have undressed hair and dreads. I currently have my hair in dreads and also have undreaded bangs. the loose hair will try to find a dread to connect to. however it's as easy as separating them after a wash or whenever you are playing around with your dreads. separating is something you want to do even with all dreads so either way.

    • @twiztidrivers6192

      Abe Valdez I used back combing and rubbber bands. Because its short its a pain in the ass so when u first make them they dont feel or look like they will work but throw some bands on them and keep rolling them between your fingers and they will start to form. also i use a little crochet hook to pull in the hairs that come out of it.

    Hey me Bruddah!!! I have a question for you, see I want dreads and I want to do the twist and rip method but my sides are shaved off so it's kind of uneven but the rest of my hair is about 5 inches long so with all that been said will that affect my dreads and anyway. let me know what you think.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Raymond West Personally I wouldn't use the twist & rip method on hair that short. It's a looser method and 5 inches really isn't going to give you a lot of length to form knots in.

    Hi, my hair is currently 5 inches long and is really bulky, wavy and curly. I'll probably do my dreads in a month when my hair is a bit longer. Could you please give me a prespective of how my dreads will look? I'm only asking because some people have smooth hair with short volume and usually the dreads don't look good from an aesthetic point of view. For some people the scalp is really visible and I don't want my scalp to be too exposed.
    Thank you :)

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +1

      Hi João I do not try and guess how people's hair will turn out... because it really would be a guess, it's impossible to say. The scalp will often be exposed at the very start if the hair is pulled particularly tight at the root, but this will fade when the dread start to get washed and loosen at the root. The scalp will only remain visible if the roots are forcefully maintained or if you have particularly thin hair.
