The Search for My 25" Tautog

- The soul purpose of this trip was to get a 20"+ fish originally, but my friend and I were actually talking the night before about how our PB tautog were 23" and 24" so I put in a little more effort today in 45ft-50ft of water for my new PB tautog.
Here is how to make your own tautog jigs!

Beautiful fish. I don't think I've ever seen anyone lip a black fish.
My grandfather used to grab them with his teeth.
Giggling like a school girl 😂love it! Great job!!
I paid for a license and I abided by the law set forth in the regulations. I only took 6-8 fish home all of last year so I didn't even put a dent in the fishery. I easily let dozens of large tautog go so I feel no remorse taking this fish to eat. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and everyone is entitled to take the fish they catch if it's legal to do so. There are so many comments like this all over social media sites with some comments more aggressive than others and the funny part is that majority of those with big feelings about how a fishery could be managed do not attend their public fishery hearings that take place in their state. Thanks for watching guys and tight lines. Ps I didn't have a net with me so I was trying to grab the shank of the hook to lift the fish in the canoe. But looking back at it prob had the adrenaline going and it was coming in the canoe whatever it would taken anyway. Also, I make these videos to simply bring you guys along with me. I'm not looking for subscribers or a million views just to hopefully cheer someone up and get someone motivated to be outdoors it's as simple as that.
Where is the spot
@11:47 25 inch tog🫡🥶👍🧜♂️🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🦈🦫🐿️🍁🍂🌔☀️🌮🌮🌮🌮 amazing catch 🦈🦈
When I catch a new Personal Best fish I release em. After a bunch of photos and video… It’s just something I like to do.
Poor man's lobster, absolutely delicious 😋 nice haul!
Awesome catch 🎣
Nice fish, its better to put the 20+ inch fish back, and keep the 16-18 inch fish. The 25 inch fish is probably 20 years old, and you want it to breed to help the tautog fishery. But great video overall!
Amen to that brother. Release the big ones
Nice, I'd Like to learn the way of the TOG some day....
Great video nice catch
Great catch! It wasn't illegal so you have nothing to be ashamed of.
Great catch great video. Just south of you there's some really deep water between the two ends of a bridge that washed out for the last time in the 1950s. But you probably know that spot. It's my favorite for tautog.
We're do I go in just starting out on tatog?
That's 25 inch should have went back since you had other great catches take a picture he/she deserved to live a longer life

@@davedeefishing I understand and we do pay alot to fish and our expenses are high worms etc I know a fish like that was the King down there over 10 years old easily so I'm a little sensitive 🥺. But you are 100% on your answer keep up the good fishing videos I just subscribe stay safe
u kept it?
Hi Dave where is your fishing spot if you don’t mind thanks
He won’t tell you
He wants you to watch him catching
Great Video!!! Dave what setup are you using?
Rod is a 7ft backhole challenger bank that's rated up to 3oz. For a reel I have a shimano tranx 201 with 20lb powerpro on it. I use this rod for everything from winter flounder to 30lb striped bass. It's truly a jack of all trades.
Where is this at state?
Congratulations
Are you anchoring your canoe in this video?
No, just drifting or holding steady by paddling.
What bridge is that?
What State are you in and location
Youre crazy for sticking your fingers in a blackfish's mouth. They can crush crabs and stuff. LOL great catch
I was seeing if the shank of the hook was at the edge of his mouth so I could swing him in with at rather than lift by the leader. I saw that the leader was shot and I didn't think it would survive me swinging him in the canoe with it. I didn't have my net that day sadly. I know they have teeth I have been catching them for 20yrs lol
@@davedeefishing Do they ever bite down,or not realy. i am truly interested!
I tog with the same rod!
Congrat
This fishing spot is good. Can you tell me the detailed address
Nice but the big one should have been released. You had plenty of meat with the others.
Not with a family of five. Thanks though.
Fish that size is very old I bet that fish is 3t to 40 years old
throw the monsters like that back, they don’t taste as good and play a big part in producing more fish
Tasted great. All in the prep. So does this size thing apply to bluefin tuna and swordfish? This fish is really old and at some point aren't effective spawners. Taking females from the population I'd imagine is far more detrimental to the population. Do you think taking one fish is really that significant probably not. Marine fisheries doesn't think so. Would you rather 70yr Olds having kids or people in their 20s and thirties. Most if not all vertebrates have a point where their reproductive organs are not healthy and if they were to reproduce would have subpar offspring. This is why trout hatchery release brood stock fish, their spawn would be not as healthy as younger brood stock. Thanks for you comment!
How don't they taste as good? Do you even know what your talking about or your just hating.
You shouldn’t tie braided line directly to your rig always use a top shot of mono and I don’t know what you’re doing sticking your fingers in there mouths to get the hook out
There's There's snap swivel in between the rig and main line. I Just barely touched his lip because from my angle I thought thats where the hook was, but thanks for your concern. Never stuck my fingers past his jaws lol.
@@davedeefishing Still would use a top shot if that braid rubs against the structure it's going to brake mono won't
Doesn't seem as exciting as striped bass fishing, but still looks very fun.
Great fighting fish pound per pound. The littlest nibbles could be a tank of a tog too. There is something about using a piece of crab for bait and knowing a something with some attitude and teeth is going to crush it lol.
My ex girlfriend had teeth like a tautog .
Nice job and nice vid! Looks like a place I fish in Narragansett bay just north of Jamestown. Thanks for sharing. See you out on the water!
love how he siad 20 on the dot yet I can see its a quarter inch short of 20🤣😂🤣 pause at 5:49. still nice catches though!
Nice fish! Carry a towel to cover their eyes and they will settle down in the boat. Get a landing net so you don't loose them, never reach in to pick them up, not only are the teeth dangerous, but the dorsal fin is as well.
Dude stuck his hand in its mouth
Yo I saw you put your finger in it's mouth! Don't want to think about what could even happen 😰
Dude I was excited watching the video too is if I was there I can’t wait to get out there in my area and have your luck tight lines dude
Rhode Island native moving back after 30 years in Colorado. Can't wait to do some real fishing!
I subscribed just to watch you loose a finger in the future. Nice catch!
So many people telling you what to do, implicitly and explicitly; don’t mind them. Great video and keep on fishing and uploading! 👍
Thanks, will do!
More videos plz and what’s ur set up
Ah, the video that made me sub to your channel lol. About to go tog fishing again for the first time this year on the 7th.
Tight lines my friend
I'm hoping to start tog fishing in two weeks. Good luck to you too!
No back bone on that rod u can't set the hook on it
Yes you can actually. It a mh for up to 3oz made by blackhole specifically for tautog. The wide camera angle makes it look like it's bending more than it actually is.
I have a few Black hole rods, What model is that one a charter special?
I'm GLAD you kept a few for the table. You earned it. What craft are you paddleing?
Old town next solo hybrid canoe/kayak
@@davedeefishing How do you find the weight and stability on big water?
Where you were fishing is a gem of a spot, Just Last Wednesday picked up 4 20 plus white chins and a dozen more keeper size...All released except 2 for dinner...I release all females regardless of if they keep or not. As you probably know Tog are slow growers. PS don't let overopinionated people get to you it's not worth it...Tight lines brother.
Hi..I’m from NYC..what bridge is that your fishing under..I never stuck my finger in a tautog’s mouth..
You are one heck of a lucky guy. You should have lost a couple of fingers by now. Please be careful.
Nice
Thanks
Great fishing video man 👏🏻👏🏻
Hell of a catch wow Go Get’em bro
2 fingers in the mouth never saw that b4
I can't believe you put your finger in the blackfish mouth,I don't think that's a good idea Very good catch.
Def not a good idea obviously. I was trying to see if the hook was at the edge of his mouth to lift him because I didn't have a net. But really if it came down to it , I would have done whatever to get this beast in the canoe.
Ok but be careful
Just subscribed... keep up the great work brother!
Monstah, nice catch!
Thanks!
@@davedeefishing even fished near dartmouth or westport?
Neither actually. I wanted to try Westport last year, but it just never happened.
Should only keep 15-20 inch fish lol so sad.. like you said think of all the fisherman and hooks that fish dodged. Why not let him swim another day, TOG are one of the slowest growing fish in the ocean.. that fish was probably 15-20 years old
I am only a drop in the ocean taking one fish. Sorry I offended you. I take like 10 fish max a year out of the dozens and dozens I catch. 🤷
@@davedeefishing I understand stand that, I keep every blackfish lol I’m just saying I only keep ones though up to 20 inches. I have respect for the fish! Like I mentioned they are one of the slowest growing fish. I’ve got probably 12 keepers so far starting in August
@@davedeefishing so why not let the monsters go to swim another day and just keep the minn size or a little bigger. 25 inch is a monster! My pb is only 16 1/2
Not sure if you understand the time, money, and physical effort I put out when I go out on a canoe to get these things. Read my pinned comment. It's OK to disagree on things. If one is abiding by the law I don't think it's worth more of my time explaining my point of view.. I am a single guy on a Canoe not a charter or commercial boat. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@davedeefishing dude i put in a lot of time myself. Been going every weekend inshore jetty fishing at inlets/ canals in the cold weather and go through like 6-12 dozen green crabs in a weekend easily. I put in a lot of time fishing for blackfish myself sir
Where you park?
can anyone tell me where is he fishing please. Thanks
No one is gonna give up their spot location. Just look for areas with lots of underwater structure for them to hide they tend to stay in those areas
How do you cook them?
I usually steam them as that's my favorite way, but baked tog fillets are hard to beat.
What state do you fish out of??
RI, MA, and CT
Great catch man!!
I don't understand why anyone kills big fish. 1st of all they taste like crap . Most importantly big fish produce more and bigger eggs than smaller sexually mature fish and have a better chance of survival. It's not the 70's any more when everyone killed everything they caught. Tautog are VERY slow growing and a very large one may be almost as old as you.
It tasted fine because I can properly clean and cook. Yes, bigger fish produce more eggs to a certain point limited by age. This was a male btw. Older female fish have less yield as far as fertilized eggs actually hatching successfully. I paid for my license and took very few fish all year. Me taking home this one is a drop in the bucket in the scheme of things. A lot of assumptions in your comment and many others I've seen. RI often has open fisheries meetings if you have input or complaints that could be considered in changing policies and regulations you should go. The regulations that are in place now are enjoyed by many many people harvesting with in the law. So there's nothing for you really to complain about other than the personal opinions. Thanks.
