  • Ivy Leaguer David "Mott" Green dropped out of the University of Pennsylvania and moved to a bamboo hut in Grenada. Now he lives in the chocolate factory he built with a co-op of local growers and produces "tree to bar" organic chocolate that is winning international awards and bringing jobs to the local economy. Sailing his Hobie Cat and catching fresh fish for dinner every day, Mott has built an idyllic life that few would believe possible.

So sorry to hear. We met David and visited his factory when we lived in Grenada for 5 months in 2002. He made a great contribution to Grenada society.

I wish that I could love this video instead of just a thumbs up. This man has created a model of what Grenada should do with all of it's natural resources. I feel deeply touched and motivated! Thank you.

The Grenada Chocolate Company made the best chocolate I ever tasted. I just regret I visited the island just a couple months too late to meet Mr. Green. He was an inspiration and a testimony to the power of the human spirit.

OMG! what a beautiful soul. I was watching this video and thinking I would contact him so he can help and teach me to start something similar in the village of Ikata in Cameroon. The farmers there work so hard but get ripped-off by cocoa buyers from chocolate manufactures in the West. Some of the farmers became so disillusioned of the pittance they get that they stopped farming cocoa altogether, some even burn down their own cocoa plantation. The ability to produced their own chocolate would've been the best thing for Ikata farmers and the other villages around that area. It's just heartbreaking to learn he passed away. He had such a tremendous impact on thousands of life. May your soul rest in peace Sir.

Terrible to hear about his passing. I was sitting here watching this and started writing all the information down thinking "I finally found what I wanted to do!" Just so sad that he passed knowing how many people's lives he had an effect on. I pray his legacy and this company lives on.

Just rewatched this after so many years. Mott sent me the link with a comment "check this biography out. I think Judith, my mum, comes across great" She certainly does, and we miss you so much Mott. You would be very proud to see what the crew at the factory have done, just about to open Bonbon Shop Mark II - very close to the factory, restoring the old boucan... Thanks Savannah for making this great video.

Many condolences from West Philly where Mott "Moth" Green lived and worked for many years. His legacy is felt here in the people he lived with, buildings he fixed up, and the chocolate that we eat here every day. Moth, we celebrate your life!

I learned -- quite by accident -- of Mr. Green's passing halfway through watching this video.
How fascinating and moving it was to watch the second half of the video knowing that such a fine man no longer walks the earth.
May you rest in peace, Mr. Green, and thank you for all of your hard work over the years.

I just read that Mott passed away from being electrocuted on a solar project. How sad. He is one of the ones that this world needs. May he RIP and his hard work and dreams live on in Grenada.

What a beautiful soul...so inspiring to see someone fulfill MY ultimate dream, of finding a culture where I can live by my values and make a small impact for good. To live the way I believe we were intended to. I am so saddened to hear of his passing. As an American, I was raised to pledge allegiance to my county & value patriotism...but I'm conflicted. I don't feel like I belong here. I'm proud of the courage & good our soldiers have done at times, but ashamed of many of our actions in the world. It often feels as though we've become a bully, rather than using our power in positive ways. We no longer care for our own citizens either- the way we treat our veterans, mental health patients, etc, is deplorable. I don't want to be brainwashed by powers that seek only imperialism, domination, to increase their own wealth. I don't want to waste my life. I thought my degree in social work would lead me to my dream, but so far I haven't found my calling. I'm inspired by this man's vision & drive- he was truly wealthy. I hope I too, can find my path. This man just shone from inside. I am sure he was loved by many and his spirit will live on.

I love the show, the intro music, the draw back of the intro into the collective etc, but you always highlight that player with the boat. Please highlight the personality of the show, not the same guy every time...
After reading these comments, I realized Sir Mott is dead. Electrocuted by his equipment apparently. A sad ending to a good story, but a cautionary tale to men like myself who want to try and do it all. Some jobs are better left to the professionals.
