One of the few good things to come out of the global pandemic is that people are biking more. But with an increase demand for bikes, and the pandemic kind of wrecking the global supply chain, bike parts have either been extremely hard to find or way more expensive than they were during more normal times, bringing a resurgence to the most cost-effective way to get into fixed gear riding: converting an old road bike. That's exactly what Jesse Bader did. But to bring his Bridgestone Kabuki fixed gear conversion to the next level, he did some expert DIY to make a fixed gear conversion like you've never seen before.

How to have your fixed gear featured:
1. Email me your extensive parts list: iam@zachgallardo.com with BIKE CHECK in subject line. Include your Instagram handle if you want to be tagged.
2. Tell me your bike's story. Bikes with cool stories are more likely to have bike checks made than bling but boring bikes without a story.
3. Send me your 1080p or 4k video files via Google Drive or Dropbox. Video files must be:
1) 10-15 seconds long each
2) have as little camera movement as possible (little camera shake, no pans/zooms, be horizontal DUH!)
3) 20-25 different shots with 3 shots of your complete bike is a good amount.
4. Keep in mind I'll run ads on the video to help cover the cost of producing the bike checks. Gotta stay fed.
5. Follow this carefully. Bike checks either get made the right way or not at all.

That's a beautiful build! Sometimes it's about the challenge, not the practicality. He rejected the expense of an eccentric axle hub, resisted the temptation to make a single speed with an off the shelf tensioner. Who said "It's not about the bike?"
Here in argentina route frames are all over, and there are not so manny track frames, so we make dropouts and replace the original ones. We unweld it with oxygen welder and bronze, and reweld it with bronze, it works pretty well. I had made a couple of my own in my workshop.
Here in Chile it is the same, many steel artisans do that work. It is an excellent alternative and work very well.

@@alpacamale2909 depende de la relación que uses algunas se complica dejar tensa la cadena. Otros ganchos tienen muy corto el recorrido o son pars encastrar directsmente

What a cool bike and great color! I have an old blue Bridgestone Kabuki too! An older guy from work gave to me as he was trying to get me into road biking (from mtb), he said it was his first road bike he got when he was young.
I was going to do the same conversion but ended up just cleaning it up and upgrading the wheels with used aluminum wheelset- it rides so nice!
As for my first fixed gear bike...I ended up going all in and getting a new cinelli shark frame and built it over 3 months as parts came in. ✌️

Those dropouts are amazing, great job.
Forget the half-link chain on fixed gear - the forward stopping/skid power tear the chainlinks apart.
Skiding is a waste if money as is ruins tires and chains get killed as well
@@gulfcitynd THIS type of chain is not recommended to fixed gears, because if you do a skid, the chainlinks work like a wedge on each other

Well, it's been almost fifty years since I rode "fixed gear" not conversion, I've been considering it, and have a 77 "Viscount" frame, I believe is 55 or 56 cm, and I watched this specifically to see how he did it. I believe I will do these slightly different, as they begin differently, but I like the way, and have some chrome moly to do it out of. I also build motor cycle frames. I have watched a dozen or so of your videos, and enjoyed them enough to get motivated. I don't have a proper hub for the rear, but I do have a set of "Campi" high flange road hubs laced to 700's I just built last winter, with a Gipieme crankset from the sixties, maybe, not sure, and a 53 chain ring. Weinman center pull front brake is ready for it, with the "Tange fork" Yamaha I believe did, immediately after buying them. I wasn't sure what to do with this frame that fits so nice, but this video convinced me. I might be three times your age, I had a Campi bronze rear deraileur and the accompanied front, on my first not Schwinn frame. This frame is 4130 straight gauge tubing, I believe, with 130 mm drops in the rear. I will send pictures when complete. Thanks for some informative, very professional videos, it's good to know those your age are still doing what I was, I loved every minute of it, and hope to have many more hours of joy. I believe the bicycle is probably the best, most important invention of "the industrial age", imagine, running as fast as a horse, under your own power, or just do it. Thanks again.

Bet the cog is threaded onto a single speed hub, and the lockring is a bb lockring. Live reasonably dangerous!

no way, im doing the same thing right now but just a little more complete by changing the Dropouts entirely with a custom build jig for alignment. I think i send you the Details for a Presentation on your channel

I liked this video because you are using a bike with a front brake and not advocating something like riding without a hand brake that someone could go out on and kill themselves on.

Yeah it's a bmx shadow chain and its 100% is backwards
halflink chains are really strong one way. So the fixed gear really eats it. i think he put the chain backwards so its stronger during skids

now that you mention it continious push from my roadie friends(now fixed riders dont worry xD) and with your channel on the tab I first traded my Giant mtb for an old but crisp road bike and I am in the middle of converting my bike into fixed gear bike(dam those parts are expensive)

110 bcd makes it possible to have a 34t chainring. Very useful for a compact double or for a touring triple with an inner 74.bcd chainring down to 24t.
The notion of "compact double" didn't exist in the 1970's or 1980's (that I ever saw).
Right, it didn’t but it was versatile in the future. Everyone was stuck on 52/42t back then.

Yes, you can even use bmx pedals with straps. Foot retention is really up to your preference.

Big difference between vintage cupNcone bearings and current. Back then there were quality materials and craftsmanship put into cNc bearings, these days it's mostly cheap stuff except some specialty makes which cost more than Taiwan made sealed bearings.
I have a '73 Univega Gran Turismo made by "fuji" I converted to fixed and it also has a 110 BCD.
Are you sure it was made by Fuji? Miyata was the outsourced maker of all the Univega's I know of.

I just did a reto fixie build with 1976 frame a Schwinn Super Le Tour 12.2 small frame.....its so lite and was built in Japan I love it :) Oh got the frame off Craigs List for $20!!! No it wasn't stolen :)

Furthermore wabi is not distributed in Europe.
I got a lot of money of a bank loan and i waa ready to order a Wabi then I discovered they don't send to latin america anymore.
I instead used the money to build a new bathroom in my house :(

Hey everyone I've got a real issue when I tried the fixed gear side on my State Bicycles bike. Actually, when i was gently peddling forward no problem but as soon as I tried to block the pedals the chain felt like it was jumping for 2 sec then back to normal and same if I strongly peddle forward. My cog is tight af as well as my chain so I really struggle to locate the issue. Hope someone has the answer. Peace :)
Probably an issue with your chain line which can be common with State bikes (I have a black label v2). You might need a spacer on the back. If you're not familiar enough with bikes take it to a shop and have them look at it because chain issues on a fixie can be very dangerous.

Since watching your channel, I now ride regularly, own a 2020 Wabi classic complete with brooks saddle, MKS cages, and Toshi double straps LOL and don't forget the cycling cap for maximum hipster points.
He could just get a new rearwheel with a cog, remove all derailers and brakes and cut the chain to length...but sure why not while i’m at it just slice off the rear drop outs and slap on new track drop outs
Its not nearly as hard as you think to modify a frame.
Could have use some file work to make it look smoother.
The machining is crisp as heck, all around amazing job.
Rad I love hacking steel bikes its the biggest benefit to steel imo. Alu is cheaper and just as strong, titanium is similar but doesnt corrode and is more expensive but steel is easy to weld, cut, braze and bend. 4130 especially. Anyone thats into track-packing or hauling stuff on their fixed gear, get a torch some bike silver braze rod and a drill and you can start adding extra bottle bosses and rack bosses all over your frame.
Aluminum is cheap, but it also doesn't last. If it has any flex in it that will be a failure point from fatigue. This is why good alu is the stiffest non-compliant thing you can ride, and why you don't want any alu parts to be so thing they flex, particularly the stem.

Fixed gear or single speed track, I cycle single speed on road long distance and my record right now is minimum 33.5kmh speed and I cycle 70km plus on single speed, you can find me on strava. Not to keen on gear up bikes. I can even speed up hills and stronger than most who have gear up bikes. Crank on my bike is 49t 16t 108 freewheel. I upgraded my bike recently and crank is miche and my wheel set is token carbon. Love cycling single speed rather than geared up bike. What you think?

I always wanted a fixed hear but I never felt my 400 dollar hybrid held me back so I never really wanted to spend so much money on a bike
Wheels are just too expensive for me I don't know why I would spend 200 on a wheel set when the entire bike I ride Currently only cost me 400 dollars
Wheelsets are usually an "upgrade" so keep it in that context, but you can just go for a rear wheel which cuts the cost down.
If your LBS does wheel builds that can be an even better cost:benefit ratio - I think mine charges 60$/wheel built (as long as you provide all the parts) but YMMV.
Years ago when I were less selective about bikes I bought $400 hybrid bike for a kid. Now I'd spend same $400 on SS with better, lighter, stronger any part of bike.

Pls make a video about using a QR hubs on rear on a fixied gear bike because trying to find female hubs in the Philippines is like gold and I dont want to always bring a 16 inch wrench when riding a fixed gear because the most common hubs u will see here is a male hubs and QR
What would really look cool would be a set of welded wings on carbon steel nuts. That's how it used to be done before QR. Cold weather and numb hands would not be a problem there. If you could score some vintage originals you'd get triple fixie points !

Delta makes a kind of security hub quick release only using an Allen key to tighten it. Unfortunately its usable life is limited to a few dozen tightenings. It would work for like 126 to 135mm OLD. The front version at 100mm wouldn't work.
Park tool makes the SS-15, made for single-speed/fixed. Plenty of ways to stash that on your bike as it's pocket-sized. Might fit in a small pocket knife belt case tied to your seat tube
I'd rather not bother with a fix gear bike not worth the knee pain and I'd rather coast and I prefer the woods as is and do like getting muddy
If your saddle height is correct and you are running a sensible gear ratio the knee issues are more or less the same as a well fitted road bike.
