Simply buying a fixed gear doesn't make one a fixed gear rider; no, fixed gear riders are much more pretentious than that. Rather, to tell whether you've been fully assimilated into the fixed gear culture, here's 17 revealing signs you're officially a fixed gear rider.

So glad I flipped my hub to single speed. The social pressure was overwhelming.
LoL
😂😂😂
Now that’s a proper hipster joke 😂
I do love that feeling when I'm flying down a road, spot another cyclist on the opposite side, they have pedal straps, it's singlespeed, no brake... and you both share a nod of respect as you whizz past each other.
Same...WAIT WHAT
@@ashadowoftheg3705 🤣
@@maryavina2868 i need to read stuff more carefully XD
Altough you can use your shoe solls as a rear brake
Singlespeed no brake is wild
Bro what … single speed no breaks
Every time I go back to a geared bike or single speed I feel weird when coasting 😂
lol yea
same, I always forget about brakes and find myself panicking for a split second when I try to backpedal and nothing happens
I feel weird just looking at one
While hitting the brakes I'm still pedaling 🤣
everytime i go back i feel my pedal strokes are wonky because im used to it spinning for me
In Singapore, we scream at each other no matter how far away we are “RIDE SAFE!!!!”
Indeed
I love this
i think thats beautiful
Meanwhile, one of that friend doing tricks falls down and everyone in the group cycles past him: "ride safe" "ride safe"
@@sean-ck4ql Quite an ironic usage of the "ride safe" term, but it happens often enough.
I dont know why so many cyclists pick a discipline and never change. I try to ride all types. Keeps you well rounded.
@Anthony Slusser You can also put a massive chainring on a folding bike (or minivelo) to boost the speed up to normal bike levels. Plus it looks really cool/strange
I have a slick-tire steel fatbike I built to handle downhill on pavement and hauling cargo, a semi-klunker grocery-getter made from a 27"x1-1/4" old 2x5 ten speed, a reynolds 531 road bike I'm slowly making as optimal a balance of aero and lightweight as you can make steel while poor, a folding bike, and a cruiser frame hanging around to be a "project".
None of those are fixies, but I like Zach's content. If I lived someplace flatter I might consider one.
Agreed
I'm starting to think Zach's favorite videogame character might just be Chun Li. (For pure _non-creepy_ admiration of the 82/13 she could probably push, of course.)
And at a meeeean cadence, have you seen her hyakuretsukyaku?
Yay street fighter reference
Here in the Philippines, whenever fixie riders pass by another, we greet each other with "whoop, whoop!"
Whoooppp!!
whoooppp ❤️
Wooop!!

Really got into cycling last year, got my first fg/ss Jan 30 this year in the dead of MN winter. Needed a simple reliable winter bike. Took Zach’s advice “if you wanna try fixed just do it” (or something like that) so immediately flipped it to fixed. I’m 61 and I love it love it love it. Pushing 70 gear inches in the winter (need to be cautious) and 79 gear inches the rest of the year.
I'm both a roadie and a fixed gear rider. It's in no way mutually exclusive. I train and race pretty seriously on my road bike. My daily bike is a fixed gear. Minimal maintenance, I love the style and simplicity. And it helps my pedaling and handling on my road bike
Same.
same
I'm from Burma and If we see an another fixie rider, we give him a nod and the specific smile, you can only find in Hollywood movies which means "u da man!"
I'm a roadie but just thoroughly enjoy Zach's content. I don't even own a fixed/ss
I got 2 carbon road bikes but much prefer cruising around on my surley steamroller (fixie).
Come to the dark side, we have cookies. 😁
If ya got 2 wheels and 2 pedals you’re alright with me 🙏
I'd love to have one, but I'm in Seattle... fixed gear is a serious commitment, and I have bad knees XD
@@codyherring3895 have you an ebike? If no an mtb and bafang mid drive could be for you. They range from 250 watt to 1000 watt. Totally depends on your skill level though which motor you get. (If you get 1)
I just built one for a disabled man in his 70's.
Also johnnynerdout on UA-cam is a smart guy building loads of ebikes and is happy to share information.
Hope this helps.
Battery quality very important.
Brilliantly honest.... the genuine smiles say it all when you are going through each of these points brother. Sub earned. Thank you for all your content.
My mind while watching this video: "Check. Yup. Done that. Yeah. Check. *Blushes* Check!. *Smirk* Hell yeah."
This could very well be a magazine test labeled "What kind of fixie rider are you?

Just catching up on your videos Zach. I tried riding fixed but being a BMX rider and eventually a mountain biker for close to 10 years, it did not really gel with me. I'm already 52 years old and I was not really comfortable with the no brakes and the fixed spinning. I'm just too late to the party and my cycling feels and habits are really cemented in. I really wanted to love riding my fixed bike but I just can't get over it and was really disappointed with myself. Our trails rides are pretty hardcore and you need skills and this simple bike was kicking my ass. Like you the riding experience is the #1 reason we ride bikes. I really love and absolutely think that the fixed gear bike is the coolest looking bike bar none. I turned my Fuji track into a single speed and put double brakes and attached bars similar to Ricky's. I enjoy riding it now but its not looking fixed. Oh well can't have it all. Impotantly, I discovered by this conversion that I really love the "urban cycling" ethos. So now I ride a vintage cro-mo steel 90's mountain bike that I converted into a city cruiser and I really love riding that bike around .
I am 61yo and ride fixed and road. Hats off to you BMX riders! I feel those are skills I will never truly acquire. I started cycling riding fixed in my 50s and it really fueled my passion for riding. Have never mastered an unending track stand or wheelies, and sometimes wear road kit for riding fixed. In sum, not sure I conform to a particular riding lifestyle, but enjoy the ride every day I can. Cheers.
Bruh why does sign #4 hit so hard 😭😭 I really thought I was the only one lmao
I am the only fixed gear rider here in our subdvivision. I ride and try to keep up with roadies and mtb riders who do laps around the block. It’s really challenging but it gives me that sense of achievement whenever I manage to keep up with their distance. I may not get to pass thru them but damn, I still feel great to ride with non fxd gear riders. Still not sure tho if I have instilled that fixed gear lifestyle ‘cause I still cannot skid. Thanks for the 2 new videos Zach!
I was a geared rider for the longest time, I loved it when it rained, you can still do some awesome skids on geared bikes. Plus I just love the rain,
Watching this channel made me decide to go full fixed! Ordered parts and looking forward to start building!
Used to riding geared for sports/hobby and singlespeed for groceries.. the singlespeed frame (old Batavus WITH LUGS and reynold steel) is going to get some sweet upgrades :)
Keep up the good content Zach
am loving the new cam setup zach :D
Absolutely awesome video! Outrageously makes rad sense to me!
I’m 54years I rode Fixie for a number of years BMX in the 80s then always had a Fixie now I ride SingleSpeed here in the UK 🇬🇧 but still love the Fixie culture ⚙️
I can relate there. 50 yrs old here and I rode a SS everyday
I'm 46 and fucking love this culture. And I absolutely love gapping younger dudes on road bikes.
Hey Zach, I'm primarily a "roadie" but still enjoy your content. I have an original orange Wabi Lightning (scandium - aluminum alloy, not steel) that I ride rarely, but can't get myself sell it. It the least expensive bike in my stable, but the most beautiful looking!
these videos make me feel better about riding because you're hella funny and you make hella sense and I could totally relate so thank you keep making these videos dog
Fun video like always!! It seems without trying I have checked off a few of the list, especially the stickers!!! Love my Glock, PSA, SB, Bearcreek and many other gun related stickers, heck ran out of places to put them.
Literally every time i see another bike that is either single speed or fixed i always go up to it to see if its on the single speed or fixed side and its always so disappointing when its on the single speed side of the hub :(((((((
I love the desire to run track bike parts, its like using race car parts on your street car in car culture.
You're a fixed gear rider, I get it. I have a 20 year old Masi fixed gear I ride quite often....... But I'm 67 years old, I never go into the drops anymore and my back is tired of bending over. I'm thinking very seriously of flipping the rear wheel and getting some risers. Single speed bikes need some love too. Nothing like a good pedal strike to make someone think seriously about the advantages of a freewheel. Love that purple bike you have with the basket and cruiser bars. Manufacturers should offer more bike like that for us old people. Great video, cheers!
Hey, Im younger than you but last year bought moustache bars to ride upwards...turns out, frame is too big for me. Then I got another bike smaller one size and find myself keeping risers on it. Back is sensitive place, but with this light speedy beasts I don't normally need to lean low to go faster than average. Hope I'll be in same mood good 20 years later. Keep riding, be safe!
I’ve been riding fixed since Nixon was president. After moving away from the velodrome l didn’t need drops, so i switched to bullhorns & risers with taller stems.
Remember: You don’t get older, just your cogs get bigger...
Forgot: When you’re off the bike and see a fixed gear ride by, you yell “YO, FIXIE”
haha ... i've nearly always ridden all geared bikes throughout my life as a fixed gear b/c i was always happy with the middle gear ratio. but you're right it's really hard to use gears after not having gears.
I want to see a Zach Gallardo X Global Cycling Network collab video, they need some good fixed gear content
GCN is super booooooring
Gcn is, and has been for years, just one big industry influenced sponsor commercial
@@appelflapdrol That is actually what their business is listed as afaik. An "advertising network" or something.
They still make some good content, even if IMO most of the good stuff is on the GCN tech and GMBN tech channels. Always watch sponsored content with a heavy skeptical goggle.
No offense intended to GCN, love their channel, buuuuut they did hire a womens track champion as their latest presenter and there has been not much fixed content outside of Rad Race, John's Peugeot conversion and painting a Fuji frame/constantly swapping the DA's between the Fuji and a TT Cervelo frame. Which has me believing GCN's about as much a channel for fixed gear riders as Seinfeld is for mountain bikers.
@@nefariousstylo9943 I think Manon just likes to gofast. She really liked the super aero recumbent they were temporarily given lmao
The pang of dissapointment when you see what looks like a cool fixed gear bike, and then they coast. 😁
@Bebo Dude right? These comments are the most pretentious shit, then again I guess it is just validating a lot of his points from the video.
@Bebo I think you're interpreting it wrong... not a lot of people ride fixed or take it seriously so it's cool to see someone else out there. Like hearing a loud car, expecting something exotic and seeing a civic
@Bebo sure, for you it is, but you understand how a guy who rides fixed sees another single speed and hopes it's fixed as well. That's all, it's not about which is actually superior, it could be a civic driver hearing a loud car and getting disappointed at the sight of a lambo, if you'd rather.
I feel like Zach is messenger of long gone culture. These days people ride three side by side, not in a row like in a days back then. They use bicycle as a moving chair to have a chat not to spin and enjoy flow of smoothness.
i rode for urban express back in the day when you actually had to know the streets of manhattan better than the mail carrier and there was no such thing as google maps gps whatevers. still ride the same fixed but I did retire my Walkman to my personal museum...
Geez i cant wait for my new “fixie” bike to get here so I CAN BREAK ALL OF THESE RULES!!!!!!
Rain skidzzzzz!!!! loving the april showers so i can ride like a hooligan
hit the nail on the head with damn near everything, I went and say some college buddies last night wearing a cycling cap and legs out and you know they were amazed by my tree trunks and tiny hat.
I used to take my fixed out on group metrics. I was always the only one fixed😂 people thought I was nuts! Def the best shape I’ve ever been in!
getting into fixed gear riding late in life, I just converted the first bike I bought new into a fixed gear. A 1971 schwinn super sport. The bike is now fifty years old and I am just short of 70. This after falling twenty five feet landing on my back fracturing 6 vertbrae
Love my 81 Schwinn Traveler FG American muscle 🙏🏽
I live in Arkansas and I get excited when I see some one on a fixie. Wished there were more fixed gear riders
I dont ride a fixie but I do ride a 29" BMX and most of this applies to me.
On corners I keep pedaling, leaning to the side and keeping the bike more vertical to avoid pedalstrike. Even on a freewheel bike. And I always stand up in pedals when I'm about to brake harder 🤦🏼♀️
Yay new video!
I been watching ur video thanks i learned a lot
I'm a 76 yo bloke, been cycling seriously for 35 years. I own a super light carbon road bicycle, Dura Ace groupset & all nice bling etc.....
Recently bought a cheap & heavy single speed bike, mainly to improve my level of fitness, pushing an 11 kg solid steel "beast" has turned me around, big time.
Use the single speed almost all the time. Non complex drive line, nothing to adjust or tune.
KISS - keep it simple solution !
I'm now a converted cyclist.
Single is sweet, the beast only cost me $300 - new.
I’m a roadie and fixie foo. I ride clipless, and spandex on my fixie. I ride my fixie in town and my road bike in the canyons and open roads. Though I do ride on open roads on my fixie, I haven’t braved the canyon roads on it.
Same here. Roadie and fixie, ride clipless and geared. canyon roads are a adrenaline rush on fixie. Would not recommend unless you have years of experience riding
@@Therealconnoissuer I’ve been riding for 15+ years but I still won’t brave the canyons on my fixie. It’s one thing to climb a 7-10%, another to descend with no brakes. 😅
Zach, the Fixie Points stickers inside the chain stays... I see what you did there.
I tried to ride an old geared bike I still had sitting in the basement once after years and was so freaked out that I had to think about how to break that I stopped instantly and sold it
Nearly spat out my coffee when you got to the thigh one, never thought about it but soooooo true.
Was actually looking at my own thighs whilst watching and thinking how sweet that leg vein was looking 😂😂
Usually I have the smallest gear ratio in group rides 👩🏼🔧
I think we can cut it to two:
1) You own a fixed gear and;
2) You ride it.
It doesn’t seem that complicated.
I love my Fixie "Pegasus"...for the simple reason, there's less to go wrong on them. And real men ride Fixie's anywhere. Made me laugh how much we are alike, without any written rules 😂
I was looking at Wabi Specials and saw that they have a special edition purple coming out. Is this your doing?
I've trained myself to bike uphill I live in cali and road up pch for an hour keeping up with traffic as much as I can
What gear ratio do you ride? AKA how much do your knees hurt
I try to skid the wheel, then fumble for the brake levers. Road bikes don't feel safe. Generally ride 48x19 so uphill comes easy. 48×17 is for tailwinds! 30mph feels amazing!
Definitely guilty of a few of these. The ratio question, being disappointed at seeing someone with a front brake ss freewheeling, cycling caps on/off the bike, and ruined pants 😅
Worn bikes are pretty cool. I have an all weather bike and a nice weather one. May get a third if I can find a cool frame.
I do miss geared bikes. Hopefully I’ll get one in the future.
You are in my head man, the last four 😅
One up "what's your gear ratio" with "how many gear inches" lol
I once saw a courier with brake-on fg. Shouted "breaks are cool" and saw stone face not getting what i say. The only community where locally rebellious thing is also globally more practical one. (front brake only hill climbing guy here)
I technically ride single speed but they are the same things. One you coast and the other you can't, however, it has one gear and on a single speed you always pedal to get faster.
Tried riding my buddy’s single speed after a year of fixed. I didn’t have any control at my feet damn it. How do those people ride with such loose pedals?!
Great video! So true. I noticed you said you ride a 58cm. How tall are you? How is the fit? I only ask because I am 6ft tall and trying to decide on a Wabi frame and size. Curious for a comparison. Thanks!
Right on! Lugged steel frames, toe clips and straps? I've been riding two bikes just like that for 35 years! The babes say I know how to spin! Steel is real! Columbus SL, SLX, still rock like they did new.
Exact same frames as pictured above, except they have 6 speed freewheels, 52/42 chainrings, generous 42 mm Cinelli Campion del Mondo deep drop bars, I-A stem and single pivot rim brakes, Campy all the way. Full fendered daily driver and sport bike, pushing 100,000 miles on each.
They're just wonderful bikes that'll get you to the store or the next town, no problem. Cup and cone threaded bottom brackets? Yeah! Timeless. Like fine wine, "vintage" bicycles get better with age!
You should set up a bike meet and ride out in Sac!
What is the size of the wheels on your yellow bike
I want those Everyday is leg day hoodies 😖
Go buy his merch! Completely worth it
really dig your videos, I've watched several and have learned some shit. 52yo lifetime biker, been bombing the streets of DC since 1992, and since 2006 riding a completely stripped down track. bike to work every day, bike through the city almost every night. we would get along.
anyway, couple others I thought of.
when you see someone's bike, first thing you look at is the back wheel, what are they riding. if a rear derailleur, I'm done looking. then checking brakes and where. I have no problem with people who run a front brake, I probably should myself with these knees and hips. anyway, if there's one brake, I'm still warily on board. then you look at the pedals and check the cadence. you can tell pretty quick if someone is fixed or single speed. I have no brain context for single speed bikes, I just don't understand them. it's all the liabilities of a fixed gear without any of the fucking awesomeness. torpedoing through rush hour traffic on a fixed you've been riding for years is an intimate groovy dance, there is nothing like it.
I guess the other one is that when you're riding and see another biker and instinctively notice there's no rear derailleur but then you see them coast... I just... I mean I don't dog on anyone that is out there biking, they're already way ahead of the pack. but if the very sight of a single speed fills you with bafflement to the point that you veer out of your path, you're fixed up
I check off on a lot of these (more than half, I think); haven't been able to take the leap tho lol. I just ride too much; my main way of transport.
Touché on having multiple bikes like Batman has suits!
in my Country (at least Jakarta), we call it Doltrap..because if we call it fixie. people assume it's just Drum/Coaster brake. because lots of Kids ride those.
I don't think I'll ever go fixed gear. But I love single speeds. So I relate to some of this. Especially the bit about people with gears cheating. I always think that in my head when they pass me. 😅
And electric bikes grrr
I am a huge fan of Fixed Gear bikes, but the island I live does t make it possível to ride a fixed bike all time... My house is near the highest cape in Europe... You can't squid 580m high!!! Congrats for the channel and videos

I flipped my hub to single-speed yesterday and forgot how to ride a bike.
Man, I think Im Getting Into Fixie🥰
I don't use a messenger bag. I use a food backpack 😂
sir whats your chrome bag size?citizen?
That clarence though 👌🤣🤣
I have 5 runnins bikes right now and 4 of them are fixed gears. The one frame set i have sittin in the closet is gonna be built up as my tracklocross/hybrid/annoy roadies build. I think i might be a fixed gear cyclist.....
I may be a single speed rider, but honestly other than being able to coast vs not being able to, I relate to 80% of this video😂 Minimalism is applied to everything i have (even my car lol) but oh i need the three bikes I have🤣
i used my "dead cog" since 2013 dude 🤟
I did 43 miles yesterday in NYC, had to put my brake on because no way I can ride that much brakeless. can't feel my legs right now. :)
Just a few days someone called me out for having brakes on my fixed gear bike. The next Sunday, I did a 100km ride on it, in a heat wave. By the end of the ride, I was glad I had the brakes.
@@PrabuddhaDasGupta1966 Nice, brakes are useful in long rides
I love To ride my fixie Even in Uphill But when the Gradients Start To Rise I Wish I have More Gears😂😂 But still Riding Fixie Is more Convinient, Less maintenance And Its more Fun to Ride in the City using Fixie..
I gone through 3 back tires in the past month.... defo a fix rider 😂
I've never been so unsold on something so fast before in my life. I just started riding bikes think I'm going to stick with gears for a while. The skid thing is kool though gotta learn how to do it
Hey, Zach! Normally, when it rains, my tires (700x28c - wtb thick&slick) slip A LOT. I've had some pretty serious accidents because of that... Do you have any suggestions (other than me getting better at riding lol)?
Get good tires. I really like the Schwalbe one for the rain, it grips more. Also weight the rear of your bike more when skidding. If you run straps, also learn foot stopping.
I don't know if that I fixed. But I know before I got a fixed gear bike, anytime I have to go out for groceries or a few drinks I usually procast or just say no. After I got a fixed gear, the more chance I get to go out the more exited I become. I ride it anywhere I want to go, near or far whatever, I got to ride my bike that's an oh god that feeling. I would let the ride fuck me anytime I ride on it if it could, no joke.
The Campagnolo aero chainring at 2:12 is super rare. I am really surprised to see one on the street.
Mmm, i think that's a set of Stronglight's 107

Riding my Fuji track bike seems to keep me stronger but as not to disappoint you fixed gear guys at 67 yrs old and living in N.J. I choose to ride not fixed anymore, I can react quicker to the drivers here which in turn keeps me happy and hopefully riding for more years to come. Plus if you judge me I'll cancel my sweatshirt order!
I laughed so hard when he said you can tell a person is a fixie rider when he wear cycling caps ......... off the bike 😂
Love you man
So I really do respect and love the idea of riding fixed gear but personally I would rather be able to coast, i road bmx bikes for a long time and just like that liberty, everything else for me, I love not having so much weight from gears, I love the idea of pushing yourself to your limit, I remember always just having gears on my Raleigh just set on one and never switching it, so I just switched it out for a single speed freewheel, I like the inbetween
Oof, that 3rensho @ 9:42!
The thigh check hit hard. Haha

Me who’s always ridden a fixed gear and never understood a geared bike lol
I ride both, because 14% grade hills require it.
Fixed gear track bikes are so good looking and simple tho.
Yeah i just never got into geared bikes because i always had a fixed gear. Right now i have an og 2004 Fuji Track Bike and I’m 100% in love with it!
I was in town and a fellow asked me about my bike. He asked me my inches. "63" to anyone else that conversation is absurd. It was kind of a secret handshake.
In Philippines, Whoop! Or Whoop! Whoop! is a way of greeting the rider. Everytime you hear the "Whooop!" Or "Whoop! Whoop!"
Probably there is another fixed gear rider around or knows about fixie.
