I remember the first time I rode the gryphon from IF to SW . I don't think I'll ever be able to replicate that in a game ever again, looking down at the other zones, seeing a few skull enemies ..wondering if I'll ever make it to that zone ...good times

"Troll shamans would have basically been raid bosses"
But all that time.... there he was. Just standing there. Regenerating f̶i̶v̶e̶ TEN, health,
    per
    second.
    I glared at the Troll.
The Troll glared back at me.
    Silence flooded the world.
"And there's nothing you can do about it," the Troll whispered.

You see, back in vanilla the "endgame" wasn't the most important thing. The grind to reach level 60 was a great experience by itself. It was a legitimate part of the game, just as important as the endgame.

    • @Dudedontdodrugs
      @Dudedontdodrugs 5 років тому +9

AlexeiVoronin totally agree man. For me vanilla is more of a journey spent with my friends to try out new things, get new gears and explore new place rather then hitting the endgame. Those little nostalgic moments along the way are such a treasure for me. Tbh I didn’t even know the “endgame” part until tbc is about to come. After hitting 60 I was just wondering around helping new players and guide them in case they got lost. It was a more pure and enjoyable experience for me.

    • @ExplosionRadius

      This.
It's why I can't stand playing modern wow. There's no "world" in world of warcraft anymore when 99% of the content is a loot slide into the current patch with heirlooms, queues and "catch up" dungeons making said content meaningless.
They designed the game to revolve entirely around the short term, then wonder why they're losing subs in the long term.

    • @zhain0
      @zhain0 5 років тому +3

@@ExplosionRadius it's not a mmorpg anymore. It's a mmo hack n slash with a cash shop and a paid way to get to end game.
I thought it was narrative that had mostly ruined retail. Sin e classic I've realized the entirety of retail is trash. It died after wotlk. Something was lost after that.....

I was a casual-hardcore gamer in vanilla, meaning I was a bit slower to lvl to 60 than most of my guildies with hardcore tendencies... I was a warlock. they needed warlocks in early lvl 60 raids and because warlock was a weak class in the first months of the game not many warlocks were rolled.
so my guild waited WEEKS upon WEEKS for me to finally make it to lvl 60.... imagine that in modern times.. . Somehow, despite being rather slow, I was still among the first 10 warlocks on the server to make it to lvl 60. And then I needed another 3 weeks to get my Onyxia attunement done.... meanwhile they had already disenchanted half a dozen warlock epic pieces because there was nobody to loot them.. (the only other warlock in the guild already had everything because he got 100% of the warlock loot. Finally I was able to join them for MC and Ony.... I stayed with that guild for 2 years all the way to C'thun and Naxx... It was amazing, we were amateurs compared to modern raiders, but we kept going till TBC... We had those legendary all night wipe fests.... guild drama, splitting up and merging.... We never made it to end boss naxx, but we had a blast and till today it was the best gaming experience of my life . at some patch warlocks got really powerful

Mad season, I’ve seen and love all your videos, they’re just incredible. Very informative, relaxing, and you truly know how to both inform those who are new and interested, and play on us old gamers nostalgia. One of my favorite things is that, as if the wow nostalgia isn’t enough, you throw the Zelda music in there and it really just brings me back to a really positive, enjoyable time hehe. Don’t ever stop making videos. I don’t even care if they’re not about wow anymore even though vanilla was and is my favorite game ever made. Literally any game you become knowledgeable about will be worth watching videos created by you on.

On my server getting rid of 10 man raids for all the 5 man dungeons was actually a huge deal. It wasn't uncommon for people to still have all their quests when the change happened. Paladins had huge issues trying to get their epic mount because nobody wanted to do those runs 5 man.

Great video as always! I do want to point out that for a long time flight paths weren't connected. To go from one end of the continent to the other, you had to take a flight to the next flightmaster, then look at their map and buy the next leg of the journey. This was exacerbated by some flight points near each other not actually connected, so upon landing you'd see you can't get to where you wanted to end up, you had to fly somewhere else first and then there.

6:14 - while that entrance to Naxxramas never was used, it WAS possible to get to in the live game eventually. During MoP, I found ways of glitching under/behind Stratholme (so, uninstanced version), and you could indeed go through that tunnel where what you're showing in the video is in fact there in the open world.

Around 11:25, you say that the IF-SW tram was a godsend due to the cost savings on travel it enabled. While that may have been true for the most penny-pinching of adventurers, the main advantage of the tram was the MUCH faster speed compared to the slow griffins at the time, a point you mention later in the video. Besides, this particular flight path was quite cheap.
The griffin was good for the view, and/or if it was time to make some dinner anyway.

I played on Windrunner for all of classic. On my server it was standard to run all the level 50+ dungeons as 10 mans in PuGs. It wasn't until patch 1.10 that I ran any of them as 5 mans. Good memories lol

  • @Demagogue88

In early vanilla everything was done 10 man for 60 man dungeons, and around DM it changed to 5 man mostly. Scholo was especially bad with all the bugs like ghoul poison death damage having an extra zero in it that insta killed people.
LBRS was also tuned for 5 people, the ring parts wouldn't drop if you were in a raid during live. So usually you'd 10 man it, and have to drop group to loot the body to check for ring gems. The ring also summoned Vael if you right clicked it during the Arena fight, he'd pop in and help you for a little while.

I remember when I played some random rpg's when I was 10 yrs old, and to see someone at max level, felt like an achievement. A thing that used to be a part of mmropgs is the fact that not everyone had a max level char, and when u saw a player that has max level you would ask him about his adventures and how to get that powerful. I miss those days, when level was a huge part of the game.

i recall darkshore to silithus taking 35 minutes until sillithus was connected to feralas. it would take 45 minutes just to get from ironforge to diremaul. and that was after flight path linking.
to ferelas took around 25 minutes.
the biggest problem the alliance had was teh lack of connection cross continent.
people would hang around in iron forge, because it was central for the eastern kingdoms, but if you wanted to go to sillithus you had to fly to either bootybay or wetlands, and take a boat over. or take a portal from a mage. whether you went, ironforge-wetlands-abberdine, or to bootybay, you had to run across a zone to get onto the boat, and then personally disembark and run to the flight master. this was a pain because so much of the transit time required manual input. you couldn't just fly to the boat, nor was teh flight master on the docks.
you could shave a few minutes by going to booty bay instead, but it was basicalyl horde controled and there was faction based glitchiness. sometimes someone could attack you and you would get flagged as hostile by the guards, and have to die 7 times to get on the boat.
engineers had portals to the neutral cities, but weren't able to share them.
it honestly was horde favortism. the blimps had much better coverage. and even when the seccond ship got added, it took players to theramore, not rutherran (eventually a 25 minute reduction) or gadgetzen (4 minute time reduction from theramore).
the rest of this is worldbuilding because i care. not directly relevant to the video though.
and the tram shouldn't have gone from ironforge to stormwind because there was no point to go to stormwind, and it was less than 1s cost. it should have connected to the bael modan (dwarf outposts in barrens), grimbatol (wetlands, and the location should be destroyed), and either thandor span or dun garok in hillsbrad foothills.
bael modan might have been a better tram location if instead of being in the hills near theramore, it was flipped to be on the opposite side of the barrens, then it could penetrate into ferelas and thousand needles. that would ballance it to "you may have to use a boat/tram/blimp/ and one flight path"
the blimps had two locations on one map, and a central location on the other, and you could jump off the blimp anywhere along the way; if you died you would only get a 5 minute penalty at the spirit healer. the ships had a top and central location on one, and a central on the other; and the tram was basically nothing. the ships couldn't really be jumped off to allow fast transit. you could shave time lost, but you couldn't avoid a run down darkshore; meanwhile a zeplin to TB would save a few minutes from a run down barrens, and once you could fly out of TB most of kalimdor opened up.
undercity-ogrimar-thunderbluff--bootybay. undercity was a zepplin from ogrimmar, and close to half of the highlevel easter kingdoms stuff, "bootybay" (gromgol) was close to the other half.
    darnassus wasn't close to anything.
stormwind was 10 secconds closer to BRM, and minutes farther from strat and scholo.
thereamore was close to onyxia, but not of other value.
ironforge was optimally placed for eastern kingdom's dungeoning, but was a flight and a boat and another always long flight from anything else.
southshore was appropriate for a boat, but didn't have one. so was the troll fishing village in hinterlands.
everlook was close to a place for consumables. it was sorta meh for both factions, but could have worked as a shared hub if the goblin cities had been networked via tram. shifting it to have a dock would have been awkward but okay.
gadgetzen was sorta close to Anquiraj. it is like a 5 minute flight.
bootybay was close to swamp of sorrows, blasted lands, and acceptably far from BRM.
the last map problem i had was that sillithus was just not connected to anything. having a break in teh mountains with a beach would allow for a seccond boat from ferelas to get down to sillithus. put neutral cenarian hold or goblin npcs on board and it is good and fair for both factions hell put both and allow them to fight as you travel. alternatively, they could have had the sillithus bug caves connect to the ferelas ones, or an item and entity like BWL which would allow a port to the gong in sillithus from the ferelas festering hole. even connecting the ungorrow camp cave system to ferelas would have droped 10 minutes of alliance travel time. teh last option, which would have been teh best, would be to have the goblin cities connected somehow. instead of dwarves having the tram, the goblins could have it and the 'bank' locations could be tram openings. thus alliance get ships, horde get blimps, and both get tram access. sure the bootybay to rachet ship would have to replaced but that isn't bad or much, rachet still has a bank which looks like a subway terminal. swaping the two would be flavorful.
that is just for ballancing and reducing play pain. flavor additions for horde would also have been nice. the blimp from orgrimar to thunder bluff is pretty bad, and similar to the tram. they should have added stops to thousand needles and ferelas. having a convienent one all the way to sillithus would proabably be bad for community, unless it had neutral guards. it would need neutral guards for both factions to pvp over access, just like for the ferelas boat option. but both ferelas and thousand needles would have character and charm for blimps to go through. thunderbluff to thousand needles would allow my height difference and verticality in thousand needles allowing the blimp to not have to go up and down. and a blimp floating down the main road to ferelas with a old style continuous elevator (paternoster) attached to one of the windmills, would be charming.
a mass transit vehicle going from some contested zone, like moonglade down to sillithus, would have droped a huge amount of time for only a bit of complexity, and would have really shown the faction dissonance between the druids and sillithids. it also would have increased world pvp a ton. similarly opening up tangential zones to reduce flight time would have helped the world completeness. they sorta did it with dwarf door to the searing gorge, but it was rarely used by raids. even then, using attunement and world things to reduce time would have saved a ton of transit time and aggravation.
the distance of the twin capital city blimp and tram isn't what matters, but the relevance of them. the travel time and complexity. the distance between silithus (on the map) and ferelas beign similar to mulgore and durotar has a different connotation because of the actual use and demand of the paths. if there is no good alternative to an option then it will always be picked, but if there is a better alternative, the bad redundant option will only be picked by roleplayers. either the use of mass transport should be from the utilitous purpose of getting strangers around the world together, focusing on tapping the low level zones, or it should be for expedition style grouping of premades. everything else is a waste.

Bit curious how you're making the footage of these old patches. Do you somehow run a server & client locally or how's it done? :)

I remember static health regen being much better/faster in Vanilla and TBC. Think it was in WoD they slowed it down a lot along with adding that annoying overkill save on mobs which you blatantly knew the mob should've died from but instead stayed at 1% health until the next hit.

The tram might have been added in 0.10, but it wasn't completed until those ERP guys moved in after the game went live.

I kinda like the idea of dungeons having no cap on how many peoples can enter. Like sure 40 man in deadmines might make the content beyond easy but the chance of you actually getting loot decrease significantly so its a good trade off as long as the number of items dropping dosent change and exp decreases. Make it feel more like an open world rpg.

I will be very interested to see how many people convert to Classic. You know, the type who dismiss vanilla as pure nostalgia and partisanship. Indeed, vanilla had a lot of problems and very underdeveloped classes-- but the fact that it knows what kind of game it is, an MMORPG, and embraces it, completely overshadows all of those issues and makes it a vastly superior example of its genre.
Modern WoW is designed for people who don't like MMOs, and I strongly suspect the reason there's so much dissatisfaction these days is because people are unconsciously becoming aware of that fact and it being a bad thing. It's like like SWTOR and its recent content, an MMORPG trying to bastardise itself into a hybrid single player game-- with the result being a piss poor MMO and a piss poor single player experience.

Logged into hard-core today and everybody in chat was talking about the new update and how it bricked all the mods. people were joking about them implementing a rez token in the new patch and a lot of people we’re genuinely thinking it was real which says a lot about what many think blizzard would be willing to do

Amazing video as usual! What tool do you use to get a freeroaming camera in a vanilla build? Can't seem to find older versions of WMT and Free Far Sight didn't exist for older builds. Thanks!
