Delightful seasonal video! Your larch forest is spectacular!! Truly surprised at the wonderful structure under the foliage of your cotoneaster. It has all the form to make a great old apple tree. Thank you for sharing the fall beauty. 🌿🌿🌿
Amazing work on the greenhouse Nigel, need to get me one of those some day! Love watching your videos every day, I don’t often comment because I’m watching through my PS4 and don’t get that option, but I’m on the phone this time so figured I’d pop in to say hi! Keep up the great work. Can’t wait to see what you get up to over the winter, especially with the Ta Prohm temple!
For the composed pine bark, I get the cheap big bags (not miracle gro)of either potting soil or top soil and some brands have a lot of pine bark in them. Some top soil has a lot of large sand or grit in it, which is a added bonus. I get it at home improvement big box stores around the bags of mulch and such. Normally you do have to let it dry out real good and them sift the fines and the large pieces but you still get a fair amount out of a bag. But for only 2 or 3 dollers it isn't bad. I have found the same brand will change from time to time, I guess it depends on what the company has at the time. Some brands use more shredded wood instead of bark so watch out for that. I have found that adding bark to the mix really helps the fired clay from breaking down as quickly. Thank you for sharing your videos, have a great day.
I saw a cottoneaster at our local fàrm store that I just knew would be great for a bonsai. Next spring I will look again for one. At this time of the year any tree or shrub or bush with fall fruit with bright color gets my attention. Thanks for your video s keep them coming.
Looking very cold there Nigel. Your winters seem so long and your Spring/summer so short! Its still quite mild here un UK we still have the cold to come, luckily it is not usually too bad. Love the winter colour on your larch forest, but love more the fresh green Spring growth.
It is spring here , I’m not sure what variant of cotoneaster I have but it’s taking for ever to bud out properly , yours looks nice Nigel , good job as always 👍
Hey Nigel. Wow I love those fall colors. I got red around the edges of my little gooseberry. My little oak and Japanese maple got red to. But not that deep. I’m surprised you haven’t talked Connor into UA-cam yet lol. He kinda makes me think of one of your viewers who are good! Whenever anyone ever looks at my trees they say “wow you’ve got allot of plants back here.” 🤦♂️ Unless they see the 1 pine that I wired into an S shape. Then they say “hey is that a Bonsai?” “Ah, yeah.” Lol
Hi Nigel, this spring I’ll be taking cuttings off a Cotoneaster from a place I lived in Boulder, CO for 14 years.(w/the new owners permission of course) I’m wondering if you or any viewers know if they can be propagated from only the whips? Was hoping to go bigger and get some cuttings down to the woody areas as well without air-layering. Thanks in advance. ☀️😎👍🏻
Aussie Dave here Nigel, question what is "safety sorb 🤔" is it like a kitty litter that is a white granular rocky pellet?🤔. If so does it have any chemical advantages or is it just absorb and retain water 🤔.
Hello David, it is 100 percent fullers earth. I believe it is fired so it doesn't break down much over many years. It is similar to kitty litter, but a more course particle size. It does hold some water and fertilizer. It is a poor person's substitute for pumice or lava rock.
I love the shape of the cotoneaster! It's already a lovely little tree. I read online their sap is poisonous to other plants, so you have to wash your tools after pruning. Do you know if that's true Nigel?
Hello i have a cotoneaster variengata , in the beginning poor buth after a few weeks with flowers / after a 8day holiday (my daughter watched my bonsais) the leaves are drying out - what to do, publishers say bacterie ? What do you think many many thanks
I see some of your bonsai plants/trees are covered in snow. I live in Chicago and our winters are pretty cold too. I don’t have a greenhouse. When should I bring my bonsai indoors to protect the roots from freezing? Till what temperature is it ok to leave bonsai outside?
Most of the hardy bonsai are fine on the benches down to 0 F. It's best if they have a good layer of snow on them to protect the trees. It's important to keep them cool over the coldest parts of winter, try and keep them below 50 F if possible. Below 0 F, even the most hardy trees can begin to die if unprotected and in pots. There are a lot of factors that determine the winter hardiness of the trees, so this is just a general guideline for the hardy native species.
I love Cotoneasters, I have a ton of cuttings from a few different varieties but the trunk on yours is so tick! I don't think its a horizontalis variant, do you have any more information on it?
Hello Nigel Sir Namaste.. This question I had asked earlier aswell, but got no response. "Here we get perlite not a problem, but safeTsorb not available at all. What else we can you instead of safeTsorb? Smashed clay brick or pot gravel?" please suggest!!
What a silver colorful world outside and green inside^^, Cotoneaster's color is so nice red, love it.
I feel like this is my surrogate greenhouse. The vicarious pleasure I get from watching you tinker with it is ridiculous 😀
You work out in the snow like it’s the middle of summer. Canadian Strong! Everything looks great. Thanks, keep growing
What do you mean Matt, this is our summer...Lol!! Thanks!
I’ve gotta get one of these cranberry cotoneaster’s! Beautiful tree!
Thanks, they are great trees for hard pruning too!
Oh wow! That larch forest! I now know what you meant when you said you couldn’t wait for the leaves to change colour. Just beautiful
Thanks, I'll be sad when they all fall off!
I'ma big fan of 'the Bonsai Supply' - almost as big a fan as I am of 'The Bonsai Zone'!
Nigel your glass greenhouse is coming in handy for a lot of things. That Cotoneaster looks amazing! Larch Forest also.
I'm looking forward to the cotoneaster's repotting! It's looking so good already :D
"All rigth. Oh, it's locked! Hold on..." xD
Not the first and it won't be the last time for that!

More improvement for the greenhouse! The cotoneaster is looking great and apparently the branches root from hardwood cuttings quite easily!
Yes, but I'm not going to root the cuttings, I'm tempted too, but I must resist!!.........Unless you want some, then I'll try!
@@TheBonsaiZone oh I am good, I got my own cotoneaster now and cuttings have already rooted! Thanks anyway Nigel
@@MaybeBonsai How about some Schefflera cuttings??? Lol!!
@@TheBonsaiZone 😂 I got enough of those as well haha
Love Cotoneaster! Great video Nigel!
Amazing to be, a bonsai tree. Creater and grower in life i see. Potential in nature's musical tone. Playing right here in The Bonsai Zone💚
Great pruning Nigel, and I can't believe it's snowing there already!
Winter prep is a lot of work. Cotoneaster is looking good.
Wow! The cotoneaster is looking so good with the fall colours and after the pruning it's already a beauty ❤
Thanks for your work. It is really appreciated.
My pleasure, thanks Jason!
As I watch this I realize your video and editing skills equal your bonsai skills tremendous job thanks for what you do
Thanks Ken, it's always fun editing the videos!

I just watched your latest video!! Thanks, more fun stuff to come!
@@TheBonsaiZone And I just replied to your comment on it! Thanks so much, you're the coolest.
It really looked good when you were done. I’m glad I had my glasses on as some of those pieces came right at the camera when you weee trimming. 😂
Yes, the pieces were just a flying!

I love this tree. Have to get one of these!
My first one!!
After a long day at work, this was just what I needed. Thanks Nigel!
Lisa
Good to hear Lisa, have a great evening!
That is a nice looking tree. Thanks for the video.
Great video
Really like the Autumn colour of your Cotoneaster leaves. All mine have yellow fall leaves. I know what's top of my Santa wish list this year !
I saw a cottoneaster at our local fàrm store that I just knew would be great for a bonsai. Next spring I will look again for one. At this time of the year any tree or shrub or bush with fall fruit with bright color gets my attention. Thanks for your video s keep them coming.
Thanks Charles!! I hope you find a nice one!
I’ll keep them in the greenhouse, there they’ll be dry…… proceed to wetting it all by watering the acorns 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm surprised the manufacturer didn't think to include a way for drainage in those problem areas.
Awesome
Thanks Jian!
That big green bag of pearlite is comically large! 😂
Yes, big, but not heavy!!
Comically large…a bit like his hair….
that clip at the end made me giggle
And of course the keys were inside the house!

Yes, a true 4 seasons here, but I enjoy all the changes!
Good thing you could get at those to drill holes without removing the glass! Makes you wonder how it lasted as long as it did for the last owner Eh!
Good idea

I've had good luck with the cuttings, but I haven't tried any larger ones.
I got my latest bougainvillea from Jerome at Bonsai Supply. 😃
Nice!!

for redundancy we always do 2 holes

Hey Nigel, I wanted to ask . Do you ever use bonsai wire on your trees? If not , why? Blessings
I am just growing my trees with pruning now! Here is a video that explains why....
ua-cam.com/video/YGhQjOma8gQ/v-deo.html
Apparently oak trees do something and kill other trees not sure if this could be something to consider
Is it the right time for pruning, it's not going to weaken the tree? Just curious 🧐

Love the channel. I noticed you are using safe t sorb for your soil. I thought you used turface. Why the change?
I think both products are made from Fullers earth and they seem to behave in an identical way. The store switched brands a few years ago!
Foist?
Another Foist!!!

Nigel is the new Tupac the rapper, with his famous HellMary
Lol!
Did you check for water traps inside the eaves in addition to those at the foot of the walls?
Yes, I had already drilled the eaves to drain the water, it was collecting up there too! Thanks!
the plant is still in the original container. How long have you owned this plant? The trunk is looking very mature.
He bought it this past season. Not sure the exact time, but if my memory is correct- I’d say early/mid summer 2021.
Yes, I think it was mid summer?

Hello Suni, you can use pumice, lava rock or coco husk. All will work!
@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks Nigel sir!
i am surprised that glass houses have such basic design flaws.
perhaps, write to the manufacturer
Me too! Seems bizarre!
I'll be talking to them this weekend, I'll ask about that! Thanks Vinny!
Anyone interested in an oak tree forest- viewer/Bonsai Zone exhibition ? Similar to the ole viewer pics spot but with a plan of some sorts.
Cool!
