- My Cotoneaster survived the severe root pruning from last spring and today it is getting top pruned.
Today's update is my Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) vine.

I was terrified for a moderate root and branch pruning on my new cotoneaster this year, but having seen yours, I feel very safe now.

I wonder if you could wrap the vines together so as to fuse the 3 together for one thick trunk & go from there.
I think so, I'm going to look for a thicker vine before they start getting leaves this spring!
Thank you for mentioning, by the way, about the breaking dormancy. I have a wisteria that broke dormancy this year. I was going to chuck it outside into the cold, now I know not to! I'll protect it indoors until it warms up in April
I remember when you root pruned that cotoneaster, it seems like only a couple of months ago.. time must be speeding up!

It is best to keep the trees dormant if possible, if they do leaf out, the new leaves should be protected from hard frosts!
@@TheBonsaiZone thanks, Nigel! I guess for a potted plant in particular, it's just super taxing if they were to break dormancy and the leaves died - then having to reproduce leaves again (which you stated). thank you!

Great video Nigel! I'm very worried of early wake up, but also coming cold spells! I see forest trees showing signs of wake up. Pollination organs are dropping.😬 Too soon!! I want spring, but....😕

Hi Nigel, I know that in watching you, it is a good time to prune trees. I am wondering if it is also a good time to do transplanting of trees, or should it be left until spring. Thankyou
What type of climate do you live in? Generally you wanna wait until late winter/ early spring, right before (or as) the tree breaks it's dormancy. but if you live in a warm climate you could probably get away with it, but it can be risky depending on the tree's health.
I bet you just came back from the future when the cotoneaster leafed out in the spring, you must share this technology so we can all get rich!!

I have found that the greenhouse stays in the shade most of the day in the winter, it's only in the sun for about three hours in the afternoon, and it doesn't seem to heat it up much. I had my heater on a bit too high this winter, compared to the outside temperatures, good for me working away in the greenhouse, but not so good for the trees!

Is it bad if trees that are placed inside break dormancy early? I’ve put olives inside for the winter and they started growing already.
If they bud out early, the leaves should be protected from any hard frosts!
@@TheBonsaiZone so keeping them inside until spring is ok? But isn’t it weakening the tree if it had a very short dormancy period?
@@murray821 Depends on the tree, but bare in mind where they naturally grow. If you're in Canada you get much worse winters then the UK yet you both can grow similar trees in the wild.
Hello nigel. I got a cotoneaster horizontalis. And I have out on the bench . And it still have all of it leafs. Normal?
If you keep the leaves or not depends on the climate

Many of the Cotoneaster's keep their leaves all winter, especially if they are grown in the ground! I think it's normal!... if the leaves are still green?
@Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone they are green as they where in summer. Is in a pot. Nursery pot
My first year American elms are starting to wake up. I noticed sap at the highest pruning point today and swelling buds. They should be in deep dormancy right now. What do I do?
All you can do is try and keep them as cool as possible, keep them in the shade and the coldest spot you have!

Some off my trees are budding out too early what can I do about that?
You should keep them out of a hard frost if you can, other than that, there is not much you can do if they are outside. Maybe move them to a shady cooler spot in the yard?
@@TheBonsaiZone they already are in the coldest shadiest place butt its going between - 6° and 17 ° here every other week btw thanks for the tip I'll try keeping them out off frost
