Hiccup always made his crush for Astrid pretty clear but her fondness of him was not. Yeah Astrid didn’t really seem like she was too into Hiccup but over time they did grow closer so I figured when we would see them again they would probably start to date or even be dating for a little bit... but no. Hiccup’s father Stoick reveals they are far beyond that point. They are betrothed at the time of the second film! Somehow over the course of the five years between the How To Train Your Dragon films this crush and spark transformed into a strong, lifelong bond. These two awkward kids became a loving engaged couple and I just had to know all of the details of this true love story.

Yeah I definitely agree there was a deleted scene that had a little hiccstrid moment before the events of the first movie and showed that she liked him at least a little but I feel like the only thing holding her back was him not taking the dragon training seriously

@@IDK098 it's not exciting, yeah, because they're already adjusted and comfortable around each other. but it's still interesting to me to see a couple like this in animation. i dunno, it's just nice. but i can agree it's not everyone's cup of tea because of lack of nuance like their relationship in the first movie.
And if you watch all the tv series, especilly Race to the edge, then the second movie and then the third one... there's not a single couple that can beat these two... that wedding was just meant to be! 😭❤

Astrid may definitely feel something for Hiccup from the start cuz right after Hiccup tried to explain that he shot down a nightfury, and the other kids make fun of him, you can see Astrid’s face looking a bit concerned after Hiccup walks off!

I kinda hope that Astrid had a crush on Hiccup before the flight, cause that would make sense with the emotional awkwardness, and why she was so begrudging about him, but then so quickly warming up. She’s a warrior, and probably isn’t emotionally fluent because of her determination and focus on fighting, combat and taking her mission seriously. Plus, they never hung out, so once they started bonding, feelings probably didn’t develop, it just started being more visible. I dunno, just me, it just sounds more realistic to me than it happening all at once.
Plus walking away from a fire toward someone is a good way of saying "I have a crush on you"
Also Astrid never made fun of Hiccup, when her friends called Hiccup names she would always scowl at them.
And you can't start liking someone after spending ten minutes together, so yeah you're probably right.
Mmmm from what I understand she never had a crush on him before their first flight together as she was focused on becoming a Viking and that's where she put all her focus on. I think people underestimate crushes that develope pretty quickly. The best way I can describe Astrid's interest in Hiccup in the begining is similar to how most young kids develope their crushes, rather spontaneous and sometimes unknowingly. By the end of the first film it seems that she developed very affectionate feelings for him which later developed further down into falling in love with him. Of course I'm aware there is a show about HTTYD so unless there is a flashback episode before the events of the first film that hints that she had a crush before the first film, I think its safe to say she didn't have a crush before the events of the first film.

I often wonder: did he slowly get better looking over the time span between Defenders of Berk and Race To The Edge? Or did he just wake up one day and WOOOOAAAH!!!
I feel like the Race to the Edge show did really well to firmly establish characters relationships with each other. Hiccup and Astrids being them finally cementing their love for each other, its done in a really realistic way and feels natural. Hiccup and his dad now seee each other as peers with Hiccup being allowed to oversee and advise him on dragon related issues, trying to ease him into becoming the chief Berk will need one day.
Now Dagur was the interesting, going from villain to hero by the midpoint. Something I like is how everyone is still slightly cautious around him even to the end, with some exceptions.
One could say that was Hiccup's arc in the Dragons series as a whole. Starting with the dragon academy.
Totally agree! I started watching the whole series as a fan of the movies but without high expectations, but I ended up loving every single episode! I was really impressed by the storyline and strong foundation of each chapter, character and timing! Everything made sense, the relationships are smoothly taken to the next level, the characters including the new ones and the villains are superb (Dagur and Vigo are just awesome!), the personalities of all are well defined and the bridge between both movies is excellent created! Especially seasons 5 and 6... I can say that someone who loves the movies but hasn't watch the tv series have lost half of the story... go watch them now!!

Their kiss was perfect, *but* my favorite moment of theirs is still that one when the guy from the dragon island goes to the edge talking about how he'll marry Ruff and she gets so pissed Hiccup has to stop her axe so the guy won't end up with it on his face. It's also funny how once so small Hiccup can literally stop Astrid now. 😁
There is no doubt that Hiccup and Astrid are one of the best couples in animation right now, with the third movie on the way by March. Yet, here's the caveat with Vikings: with them, trust earns love. A Viking is a Viking nonetheless.

I believe its confirmed it was Hiccup who made Astrids axe (I could be wrong), but I do think Astrid admired Hiccup to a degree. Hiccup was different, he was kind hearted and joking, she never showed interest in bullying him and openly showed annoyance when others picked on him.
I wouldnt call it a crush, yet but I think there was something before the movie.I think she was jealous when Hiccup surprised her in the ring, but a part of her was jealous people were giving him attention and his attention wasnt on her anymore.

If you pay close attention in the first movie, Astrid looks sympathetic twords Hiccup when he’s being bullied about the machine he made to catch Toothless and even glares at the others after Hiccup has walked past them.

So... before Hiccup got good fighting dragons, Astrid was like Helga from Hey, Arnold!? Had feelings for him but felt she wouldn't be able to live normally if she expressed her feelings and hid them behind insults and treating him badly?
One of the reasons I don't like her when she was 15, teens at that age don't always make some good choices compared to a young adult.
Though her 18/20 yr old self is far more likeable.

I think the moment when Astrid and Hiccup shared their first ride on Toothless was when she started seeing him less as a clumsy and hopeless disgrace and more as someone she could like and respect. I do think they started out as friends, and over time, their friendship grew into love. She was the one who promised to take care of Toothless when Hiccup faced the last test. She encouraged Hiccup to follow his dad and save Toothless from the Red Death when Stoic and his men went to find the dragons. And SHE was the one who initiated the first kiss after their first ride together....and she kissed him again at the end of the first movie. Its only in the second movie that we see Hiccup initiate a kiss with her. I have not seen the third film yet, but I think she will be a beautiful and worthy Queen for Hiccup. I also like the Hiccup sees her as his equal....not his inferior. He respects her and his devotion to her is just as strong as his devotion to Toothless.
When they started dating, it wasn’t even official at first. Nah they dated in secret. Because reasons.

Seriously, I'm literally on edge to be depressed because there is and can not be no such relationship this generation. I watched race to the edge in its entirety, I watched httyd 1, 2, 3 probably more than 15 times each. Their relationship is soo good that I both hate it because I cannot have a relationship like this and I love it because it is simply the best thing in the world *even if it is not real* . I watch those three movies always because I like to put myself in Hiccup's shoes because that is literally my ultimate goal, achieving such relationship! I'm not saying that I'm an exact replica of course but I kinda look like Hiccup and fix my own electrical stuff, I seriously made myself a 70 pound draw weight spring compound bow and much more. I'm 16 btw. I know I sound like an extreme fanboy but I really have emotional issues and I temporarily relieve those by watching those movies buuut it gets worse later on because what actually happens is I remind myself over and over again that I will definitely not have this kind of relationship. 99% of the girls my age are (execuse me but something had to be said)bitches that only hang up with bitter emotionless bad boys who has an iq score of 7 which also makes that girl stupid. I really want genuine love. I need a person which will fill my gaps. I need someone to trust and I need someone that will trust me. I felt like I need to say this; I listen to jazz, blues, funk and I play the sax. Ah man how can I deal with these issues.. I really need someone that will listen and actually understand that. Every person I met just looked like they listened but actually did not. Umm wanna talk? 🥲

I genuinely love that in the second movie Hiccup and Astrid's relationship was already well developed that the movie didn't have any "relationship drama". That movie had the potential to go in so many directions I personally wouldn't have liked but it didn't and I was so flipping happy!

That would entail at least one more "How to Train Your Dragon" movie, which I kinda doubt Disney is willing to work on, unless #3 is off-the-charts popular, they sell a shitload of movie merchandise, and there is an extremely high demand for a fourth movie or later. That would be pretty awesome, though, and it is sad, that this has to be the last How to Train Your Dragon movie... I hope #3 is uber popular, and that they do sell a ton of merch, and then turn around to see the fans wanting MORE, creating the necessary demand for a fourth movie! I mean, one would think off-the-charts popularity of the third movie, plus the sales of God-knows-how-much merchandise going through the roof ought to give them at least a good start, on paying for the production and creation of a fourth film!

Hiccstrid is one of my favorite fictional ships because their progression is realistic and it didn't happen out of the blue. I feel Astrid admired and was later attracted to Hiccup's own kind of strength. This is why I believe she hugged and kissed him after their first flight because he proved he was strong in his own way and not in the typical viking macho way. They also balance each other out and understand one another.

I think the biggest reason it took them so long is because Astrid is a warrior, so she's pretty clueless about love. She seemed to be noticing really late Hiccup loved her as she called them "Just friends" To Heather despite all the flirting. And Hiccup is a bit socially awkward so he just kept flirting carefully but didn't approach her directly, which is what would have made her notice his feelings for sure. They're frigging adorable though. They match so well.
When Astrid got jealous of heather I was so hyped to see what would happen!

IMO, Astrid grew up in a warrior based culture and probably felt a lot of pressure as the one really successful warrior female in the age group to marry another “strong” man. She might have had some sort of crush on Hiccup but might have felt he wasn’t Viking enough. However, after the events of HTTYD where Hiccup shows the kind of person he really is and comes into his own, it was easier for her to accept her feelings. In that movie we see her tell him that he wasn’t a coward for not killing a dragon, but brave for daring to break the norm and try and ride one. Alternatively, she might just be attracted to brave dudes and didn’t see him as an option before Hiccup showed his bravery.

Mod_ThunderWolf but in the trailer Hiccup said “there were dragons when I was a boy” so wouldn’t that be a hint that they have separated?
Elizabeth Beltran here's my theory. They will live in the hidden world together, until they realize that they can't coexist. Just like in the books, the dragons will go into hiding and to protect their existence, Hiccup will say that they are legends. But at the end of the book, while on his death bed, he waits for toothless to come back for one last time and inspires the reader to go out and find a dragon and that they are still out there, you just have too look. So yes, they will separate in the movie. It's supposed to be bittersweet.
Mod_ThunderWolf I think that means that there is still a possibility for the dragons to be out there, you just have to look for them. Just like in the books. I am pretty sure it'll end with "in my beginning is my end, there were dragons when I was a boy"
@WillFanofMany will if that's the case then toothless should be a lot smaller and not a nightfury because in the books he's not a nightfury, so in my opinion sure they try to follow the books but not completely
