I love this song and it's very deep. Even the video has meaning. His walk is a representation of the path of life, the people he encounters are the people and events that we encounter through our lives. The guy with the fridge on a dolly is like a big life altering event that was narrowly avoided. The people he bumped into are the little speed bumps that help shape our lives. The girl in the car is a bad relationship, the car is the large event that he was able to cross and move on from but she didn't move on as easily and followed representing how a love can effect your life long term even after it's ended. The lady he knocked down was like an encounter where he hurt someone else's life in some way and he was recognizing that but still life continues without looking back. The girl that checked him out was like a perfect fling that came and went and left only a fond memory. The car that actually made him pause was a major life event that held him in place for a while, maybe good maybe bad but significant enough to make his life take pause and him looking at his reflection in it's window's was representing him taking that moment of pause to reflect on himself a bit but in the end it too did pass and life continued as always. At the end when the other four followed with him is like the people in your life who are there for the long haul whoever they may be they stick with you till the end while still living their lives.
It is amazing how somethings so simplistic can be so deep. It’s literally nothing but a guy walking down the sidewalk but when you put it all together with the lyrics in the mood and tone of the song it’s kick ass!
I’ve listened to this song more times than I can remember. The lyrics really hit hard on this one. Goes to show that making our way through this life is full of complexities and challenges. It’s not simple but it’s never dull. ❤❤❤🙏🙏
His walk down the street is interrupted by different people representing different situations and hurdles... and he deals with them each in his own fully focused way. It's a reflection of real life. Brilliantly written, and brilliantly made. The lady who jumps out of her car and tries to remonstrate with him is (or was at the time) his actual wife. 🙋♂
The Rolling Stone's former manager, Allen Klein, noticed a similarity between this and their song The Last Time and refused to relinquish rights. That meant the $5 million songwriting royalties went to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. In 2019, Mick and Keith agreed to return the $5 million and future rights to Verve songwriter Richard Ashcroft, who claims he originally made about "$1000" for his efforts. Ashcroft was grateful and called Jagger and Richards gesture "kind and magnanimous" and "life affirming."
hes walking the timeline of his life, and its the only road he will be down, or ever has been down, and he has decided that his time is far too valuable to be wasting it molding himself to other lower beings ways, or posturing tough guys, or angry women, or stepping out of the way of anyone that wants to stand in his timeline.. hes not shoulder checking everyone hes passing, just the ones that are in his way.. the alternative, stepping aside.. but theres no reason to be doing anything but living your own life the best way you can come up with, from one day to the next
This song and Richard walking in a straight line represents the inevitability of life, your born you live, you die, yes you can deviate from the path and try and change who you are but ultimately you're going to end up dead.
This song resonates with me too. I have a friend who has family members in this video. The song comes from a brilliant album, Urban Hymns which had some iconic hits, including The Drugs Don't Work, Lucky Man and Sonnet. Ashcroft's solo song: A Song for the Lovers is outstanding too. In 2005 I was lucky to be at Live 8 - Hyde Park, London, right near the front, where Richard Ashcroft joined Coldplay on stage to sing Bitter Sweet Symphony.
@@rickb.4168 Unbelievable. When I was in high school people said the Stones kicked the Beatles asses. The Beatles were for pussys and the Stones had balls. 30 years later Lemmy (in the wonderful documentary “Lemmy” made while he lived in LA after Motörhead) says speaking to the cameraman while trying to buy some Beatles albums in their original mono, “The Beatles were bad ass. Louder than anyone, when pop was hard. They were from the Liverpool docks. Everyone thought the Rollong Stones were so bad ass. They were a bunch of spoiled suburban Londoners.” I guess you gotta add to that that they were taking other bands profits when they were long washed up. Wow.
I saw Richard Ashcroft last year , August bank holiday at Sandringham, with the Who being headlining. Richard Ashcroft, played this and the drugs don’t work, amazing performance
Huge worldwide hit. .... greatest Britpop song of the 90's ... subject of huge inappropriate litigation ... first cousin to the theme music from the great reality mini-series "Manor House" (originally produced in the UK) ... used in a holy shipload of commercials, movies and television programs ... great jukebox bar song - the extended version is almost 8 minutes long ... can put this one on repeat at home and loop it for hours. This is one of those songs that, for those of us who are neurologically, ah, different is a real metronome that resonates with us and helps us to think in one direction SO much more clearly.
Hi you beatiful Maddy. This is one of my farorites of that 90's era when there was already grunge and basically all sort of genres and somehow even I never lived that 60's era and Beatles this song gives me some same vibes.
Though The Verve split up as a band, lead singer Richard Ashcroft is still making music and playing live. I saw him and his current band doing a headline show here in Devon in the UK at the Beautiful Days Festival a couple of months ago and his voice still sounds incredible. He does his solo songs, but still plays quite a few Verve songs (including this one) in his live sets. Well worth seeing live if you ever get the chance.
This whole video is bigger than you can imagine. So many ripples from this particular pond. Verve from my home town. This influenced a generation. The blonde who remonstrates with him is Richard’s wife.
Thank you so much for mentioning the autistic spectrum in your review. I have a son with Asperger’s and every time that I comment on this video on different review channels I swear that this video is a window into the day of an autistic experience. So refreshing to have someone else relate to that.
Writing and recording. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is based on a sample of a 1965 orchestral version of the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra.
Wonderful song, I never paid attention to the lyrics until now, they’re really good. As you say, I was just absorbed by the overall beauty of the music and vocals. Now I like it even more. Another great post, Maddie, thank you! 🎻 🎶 🎵 🎼
I’m a 70s classic rock & hard rock guy from the 80s, didn’t like much in the 90s on…but this one, this song is fantastic. Powerful lyrics, great hard percussion & those strings! (Kinda remind me of the strings in “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS)
They got the lyrics wrong. It should be "my mode" not mould. Classic 90s Brit Rock. Props for rocking the Clark Wallabies. Ashcroft is a genius lyricist. Has had some great solo work as well. Try "The Drugs Don't Work" next time.
Love this song and the video. I don't often listen to or care about lyrics that much, but this one is great. Sadly, this band was sued for plagiarism on this song.
The music in this song is from a 1960s instrumental arrangement of "This Could Be the Last Time" by the Rolling Stones. The Verve eventually agreed to give Keith and Mick composition credits, but not until after they were sued.
This song is in my opinion about the fact that you cannot waste your life changing yourself to other peoples moulds, but you have to beleive yourself and have some direction like the singer quite brutally even crashes some women on his way. You cannot sacrifice your millions of toughts and hopes for nothing, but you have to go for it, what is the best.
I read somewhere that the band wanted to end the video with him getting beat up with blood all over his face lol. I think they were advised not to because it wouldn't get play on tv.
Walking through soft guys all day long, but when you find that one guy whose hard asf, you ain’t standing upright for long, but love the song just the same, Maddy thanks so much as always and many blessings today and always...
