Love the 3m Versaflow, game changer, wouldn't want to work without one anymore. The only downside is the fresh air inlet is near your rear exhaust! YMMV!🤣
It seems the hard part has been done so the legal ownership now rests fully with Brian so he can sell it to Sail Life with a clear provenance. The next step is pretty run-of-the-mill simple by comparison. I was worried that they wouldn't get this far for a year or more.
glass fibre reinforced plastics as we know them so nicely, are extremely strong. But a very big disadvantage is that they do not tolerate point loads. therefore be careful when removing the aluminium profiles. they redistribute these point loads in the glass fibre. to think about.
🤞🏽Hoping for a cooler Florida winter for you and all that fiberglass work you have to look forward to. And I’m in 100% agreements with Ava on a tidy workspace. My husband can work amongst chaos and it drives me insane when we do projects together. The last straw for me was a broken toe years ago after a pretty bad stub on a toolbox in our walk space. Cleanliness next to safety-ness.
Well done Mads. Love your work flow and presenting...getting it done without too much talking. So happy that you have resolved the paperwork. I am looking forward to the engines singing a tune. A shout out to Eva.
I've thought about suggesting it in the past... now you've got many many hours of fiberglass work ahead - in Florida heat no less - you should check out a Cool Suit / Cool Shirt / Cool Pants... They are popular in racing where drivers have to wear firesuits in the summer. The expense is trivial in the grand scheme of things and, feels like not turning a tyvek suit into a personal swiming pool would be worth the nuisance of dealing with dragging a couple water lines around. Obviously you could modify and customize the chiller/pump side to be more appropriate at a worksite instead of a racecar. Might even be really nice to wear when you aren't in tyvek.
1708 biax is very popular glass around here. It has the mat on the backside. 1700 is just the plain cloth with no chop stran mat. Fiberglass Florida in Rockledge is great place for your glass needs. 🤙
Mads I'm so happy for you and Ava; everything seems to be working out positively for you. And I get to see your awesome skills and dry sense of humor in what looks to be a great re-build project. Take care cheers
Gday Mads - a couple of things from my multi builds. 1 - try and keep the weight out of the ends - both ends. You will put stuff in the ends but don't think like a mono sailor anymore - think light. My 38ft cat has lovely motion offshore because it was built with the mindset of keeping weight centralised. Increasing rotational inertia is not a good thing in multis so wherever possible get weighty objects towards the centre. 2 - if you are going to go composite - start going the whole way and think cpmposite rather than stainless. With your tramp attachments, consider gluing on PVC pipe onto the tramp ramp and the hulls and then glassing over with 2 layers of 44gm db. Then cut into the pipe every 150mm with a notch. Slide through some alloy of glass rod and tie the tramp onto the rod through the notch. I even use this method for my genoa sheeting - as I don't move the genoa cars once set in the right place. Look at some composite cats and modern monos for composite tricks and how to do attachments. Bolting is heavy, expensive, produces point loads and causes leaks, whereas composite (when done well) is so much better. With the tramp ramp, I would run the PVC tube/glass along the edges where the tramp ran. I lash my tramps on, so don't need the boltrope. I love my cod end fishing net tramps - black nylon and 24 years old - 4 years liveaboard with kids. I will replace them soon but they last and are quite cheap from a fishery supply store.
Mads, you were born to do this! So glad Adsense worked out, so glad USCG issues are working out, so glad my Sundays contain “Oh glorious sanding” again! Thank you both Mads and Ava!
Om man, felt like the video was over before I started it! Crusing is nice to look at, but so many do that. Not that many who make good quality DIY videos. Really looking forward to see you transfer this to a gem. Years for interesting content.
This summer, I rebuilt the runners of the companionway hatch on my 79 Chrysler C-22 trailer sailor. Between you and Andy at Boatworks Today, I do my own fiberglass work.
Hey Mads. You might like to check out using basalt fiber instead of fiber glass. It is more expensive, but stronger, around comparable to s-glass, so you need less. But the big thing is that it is non-toxic. Maybe less itchy too? Of course, you still have the hassles of the epoxy, but it is way less hazardous in itself than fiber glass. It is also UV resistant.
I have extensively used the local equivalent of Coosa board and it is excellent. If you consistently use it throughout the rebuild you will save substantial weight. If nothing else you save huge amounts of epoxy, paint and TIME sealing up plywood.
@@markthomasson5077 Coosa panels consist of high density polyurethane foam reinforced with layers of fibreglass. They are stronger than the equivalent thickness of marine ply, and about 2/3rd the weight. The big upsides are zero water absorption and less work. The purchase price is about 30% higher but this is more than offset by the need for less epoxy sealers, paint and labour. I usually just put on two coats of single pack polyurethane for cosmetic reasons - fast and easy. It cuts and works like timber, but it is a little more abrasive and the dust has a glass content that is a bit itchy. And while it will take a thread OK - for high loads or repeated removals some form of threaded insert is advisable.
Being an avid viewer since you installed your first heating stove, 2 boats ago, I am thoroughly looking forward to your new adventure. I have been watching Bryan, Rossco, Colin, Gus amongst others, but the cat modified and upgraded by Teal on Onboard Lifestyle is absolutely top class in terms of systems layout and clever forward thinking design.
