      Technically if you move the magnet fast enough you can kind of sweep non magnetic metals with it. Like permanent magnet braking, eddy currents etc. I always wanted to try putting a magnet on a drill or something, but I'd rather not have such a mess to clean up in the first place if I can help it. :P

      correct they use the same latches as a passenger door. no way it just opened by pressure. Ford has a problem with the key-fob that makes remote opening by accident quite easy. I had a beautiful scratch on my week old truck because this happened inside my closed garage one time.

      Ford has a recall on the F-150 electric latch releases, causing the tailgate to pop open while driving. I know this because my 20 F-150 has it. The problem is, Ford made it so my tailgate won't open while the truck is running... PITA!
      I know yours is a F-250 but I'm sure it's probably the same parts...

    Not only did I watch you build it, I saw the incident. When I was a kid my dad had an old rusty beach van and one windy day he lost the whole roof on the freeway. After riding to school the next day sitting on the tops of the seats waving to our friends, we helped him weld some sheet metal to the top. Not pretty but pretty effective. Ah, thems were the days when we only had 5 channels, cartoons only Saturday morning and pong for video games.

    On a more serious note, It's a great idea and quite simple. The aluminum angles are a great addition for the platform. I'm just not sure if wood is gonna cut it for the inside part of the truck. Maybe adding a thin steel plate on the outside of the box and using nut and bolt to hold it? Just to avoid the wood spliting. The angular moment on those slides is very high for wood. I'm also not a fan of short wood screws for the platform in general. nothing like nut and bolt. The head of the screw was an issue so counter sunk head would have been great. Maybe some barrel bolts (aka sex bolts, yes its their name here) would be low profile enough to tighten it all together. But hey you are a grown man. Juste shoving ideas without thinking too much here. Take care!

    What a great build my friend you’ve done an awesome job and honestly, the commentary and interaction between you and your family is so wholesome it’s easy to see you are a great father.
    Thanks for the truck build out. I am going to try build it exactly like you did so it will hopefully go quicker for me
    And don’t worry, we’ve all had shit fly out of the back of our trucks or off of the tops of our vans
    Oh yeah, you know it. I had an E350 van and going down the tollway in Central Florida, here. Somehow the wind just caught a hold of my shit on top of my van which was strapped to some ladder racks. See back, then I hadn’t gotten a rolling or regular miter stand for my miter saw, and it used to use sawhorses with top plank for setting the miter saw on which I usually made out of some hefty material and was a decent length probably 6 to 8 feet I believe this monstrosity got too much wind friction and it literally caused all three of my ladder racks which were mounted and fastened tightly to the channel around the top of the van and was under such crazy force I guess that it bent in shredded my vans roof. The ladder racks were unusable, but the wooden wall plate was completely fine, of course
    Honestly, one of the craziest and funniest sites to this day was seeing that 50 pounds solid plank board 2 x 12 flying through the air like a kite somehow it was catching serious air I mean probably 40 feet in the air and coming down in a really unpredictable zigzag pattern, and it just reminded me flying Kate as a kid and them getting ripped off and flown away😂
    Hope to see more future builds and improvements on the system as time goes on thank you

    Wearing an insulated stocking cap, on top of all that insulating har, in the hot FLA sun? Girl's insane!!! I got the thought that the bumps in the road actually allow the locking mechanism jump up and down, skipping over the locking latch. Can't say for sure, but it seems reasonable. A lot of padlocks can actually be opened by shimmying them with a wiggler, so the same principal should apply to your slide locks. Of course, that still doesn't explain how it built up enough power to pop the tailgate. I've never seen that happen before, but it was effectively the world's largest slide hammer, so I guess it could pop a tailgate latch.

    I see there are some other comments about the auto tailgate release. I had that happen a couple times while driving on my 2019 F350 while the key was in my pocket. Ford had a recall for that issue but not really sure what they did to correct it or even if they did. I went out to the driveway once since to find the tailgate open. I "ALWAYS" now drive with the key setting in the cut holder to be safe. I carry spare tires for my car trailer and other very heavy items in the bed and like you said, "I almost killed someone". Don't take that chance. I was lucky and so were you. I think you had it open by mistake as well!

    When I have a load on my slides I put a ratchet strap from the bottom corner bed tie down (Dodge Ram came with 4 tie downs, 1 one each corner, the Chevy had them too) across the back of the load to the other corner tie down. I only have a 6ft bed so regularly allow the slide to slide out to the end of the tailgate for 8 to 10 foot boards or plywood and again crisscross 2 ratchet straps from corner tie downs. Used the same slide in 2 different truck, never lost anything in over 25 years. If the load seems shifty put another strap on it. They are cheap insurance.

      Or teach her how to apply pressure with two hands on the tool. Use the other hand and press on the back of the driver directly in line with the screw. It is a lot harder to keep it lined up and apply pressure from the grip if the driver is in an awkward position or just not strong enough. You need to both press down and counter the torque from having the hand of center if you press on the handle
      It is Torx not Robertson that should be used.

    Wood is great for cabinets and storing stuff but really needs reinforcement if holding some weight as it will flex. Ideally like angle iron or flat steel bar to introduce some rigidity to the cabinet tray..
    ..
    I guess, the wood flexed a bit as you were traveling, bounced with all the weight on it and freed off the catches..
    Now with the aluminium angle iron there'll be some stiffness that'll hopefully stop the slider locks from freeing themselves ..
    Can You deadbolt the rear tailgate?
    Like lock the tailgate with the key so when the doors are open the tailgate stays locked?
    ..
    Oh btw awesome Job camouflaging the water tank in previous episode...👍
    Did you switch on the magnet broom, perhaps why it's not working....😆.

    Ahh yes, magnets don't attract aluminum, but they do produce eddy currents when they move nearby. Now you just need to DIY a high power rotating magnetic vacuum cleaner for non-ferromagnetic metals.

    Those are some itty bitty screws for something that has slides for a 500 Lb load. I'm wondering if that stump bin bouncing around, even a tiny bit, popped the slides out of the locks and then maybe the tail gate wasn't completely latched...who knows, there could have been a few factors at play
    Put some tie downs on the top of the sliding platform so you can still strap down what you put into it. Even though it was in the bed of the truck with a cap and closed tail gate it was still an unsecured load....what if you had a roll over or had to slam on your brakes and that thing went through the passenger compartment? It would cut a person in half.

  • @chaosplan
    @chaosplan 10 місяців тому

    Look for the Ford recall that fixes tailgates that open unexpectedly. Check it out, no joke.

  • @underourrock
    @underourrock 10 місяців тому

    A block of wood or a well placed locking pin... You need a positive stop that prevents the slides from being able to move even if the slides aren't locked at all.
    Edit: not sure that top catch is going to hold up to the kind of force that might hit it with the pin in there.... a length of wood that prevents any side action, but can be moved out of the way easily would be a great end stop.

    The slides are rated for 300 lbs, but does the momentum of the truck affect or change the weight you can carry? Especially when braking.

    • @HAXMAN
      @HAXMAN  10 місяців тому +1

      The slides I used are rated for 500 pounds but momentum of something moving would definitely affect that. The truck moving could add to that I suppose.

    Haxman - Question:
    (Because I don't know and I want to learn) What was the reason for using wood and not a metal in the original build?
    Cheaper to use? Easier to work with?

      Cheaper and somewhat easier. Mostly because I don’t know how to weld. I am but a simple cabinet maker. 😂
