I was taking my driver's test and got instructed by my examiner to move into the left lane. I did so, and passed one car and immediately got over to the right lane on my own. Immediately my examiner said "Excuse me, I did not ask you to move back to the right lane!" I called her out saying that I was just obeying the law and it was mandatory for me to move back to the right. She was super chill once I said that though.
how about warning for first violation, and warning for second violation, $100 fine for 3rd violation, 30 hours community service plus $100 fine for 4th violation. most people drive on the left lane because they don't know better, so educate them. then you fine them. and take times away from them cuz those who drive fast on left lane probably value their time more than their money. if you make $1000 per day, i can see why you would speed everywhere
I sit behind them and freak the fuck out, they love it. Its pathetic. THEY CAUSE ACCIDENTS! I am a very aware and "athletic" driver who gives everyone space but people don't return the safety of space in return. They cause people to dart in and around traffic because they are driving 50 fucking mph in the middle of the highway its extremely dangerous.
I saw someone get pulled over for camping out in the left lane and when an unmarked cop just flashed his high beams at the guy to get him to move over, the driver brake checked the cop..... Ooopsie!!
thelittlepilgrim _ Yes, at one time long ago people would just pass in the left lane. They would happily move to the right after passing. Now this country is full of self entitled idiots who do what they want. This is causing states to make the left lane laws. When in the past this was just common curtesy. No law state I have to move over to let someone on the freeway but people do out of common curtesy.
1:20- “as soon as you pass, move over”? Not until you give passed car room, usually 3 car lengths at the minimum, at highway speeds. 2 tractor trailer lengths minimum. For any reason you have to stop suddenly, that truck will crush you if you cut him off.
eric wsmith you can't say nobody does!!! that's what this whole conversation is about is us watching videos of people getting tickets for what you're insisting nobody gets. very strange opinion you have that what you see happening isn't happen.
That's not true. The law applies whether it's enforced or not. People just have the ideology that it's legal unless you get caught. But that thinking is incorrect.
1Klooch and here you see that law being enforced on this video that we're watching that we're discussing I'm not sure how so many people can be so unbelievably stupid and blind to watch the police and forcing it on a video and if you look at UA-cam there are hundreds and hundreds of videos of people posting Slowpoke laws being enforced and the viewers are watching this saying just like you know I don't believe what I see. I don't believe they will ever do what they're telling me that they've already started doing
Dear God. The law in much of the country is clearly stated in the video and some of you are still arguing it? The speed limit has nothing to do with it. Left lane is for passing ONLY! Common sense applies on multi lane highways= go with the flow of traffic for the lane you are in, each lane to the left hopefully moving slightly faster than the lane to the right, again leaving the far left lane for PASSING ONLY! Anticipate your exit from freeways so that you have merged to the right at the prevailing speed to be ready to exit without causing traffic disruption. Follow the above simple plan and watch how smoothly traffic will flow. Remember, it's not up to you, the ordinary citizen, to actively try to force others to obey traffic laws. Call the police if you witness a problem and steer clear of foolish drivers. DO NOT knowingly block other drivers from changing lanes or speeding, etc. Nothing good will come of it.
Here are the actual state by state laws: www.google.com/amp/jalopnik.com/5501615/left-lane-passing-laws-a-state-by-state-map/amp?client=safari. But I'd like to add that you can't say it's common sense to apply the law in a place where it doesn't exist. As you said, people can't make up their own laws. People can't expect "keep right except to pass" rule to be in effect if the state doesn't have that rule. In those cases, each lane is both a passing and a traveling lane.
thelittlepilgrim The way I read that, in all but a handful of states, the rule is "get the hell over". I lived in KS for a few years and they started ticketing people for blocking traffic in the left lane. I think it's common sense to get over. The few states that have nothing on the books, really should. Traffic "flows" and road systems are designed with this in mind. I'm often surprised people have no concept of blocking traffic, or will even consider themselves the passing lane police, figuring they should stop everyone from speeding.
they do not care, they are too puffed with self righteous indignation to give a damn about impeding. nevermind that it creates more dangers than one who is speeding, in their little hypocritical minds, they are in the right.
Listen to the news story listen to the police, stop arguing pointless details like speeding and speed limits which has nothing to do with the topic whatsoever. Keep right except to pass. slower traffic keep right. Notice the consistent word here is KEEP. This is the very ignorance everyone is ignoring the word keep and stupidly arguing empty unrelated excuses to ignore the most important word here keep. why do so many people think that this news story is so wrong?
richgs76 If you’re in the left lane and passing cars, then you aren’t doing anything wrong. You are not obligated to speed up or move over as long as you are still passing!
See, you can't do this in Germany because if someone comes behind you doing 250 km/h and you don't move out of their way, you die. It's that simple. That's why people respect the law.
Tuddec This is exactly what I tell people that don't understand this rule. Just go drive in Germany for a day and you'll never get in the left lane again haha
German drivers are more likely to know the rules of the road as the testing for receiving a license is much more stringent than it is in most of the world. In North America all you need to get a license is a pulse.
You can't undertake in most counties, except the US. I learned to drive in Germany and feel far more comfortable at 160 kph on the Autobahn than I do at much slower speeds on the American Interstate.
As someone who did get pulled over for being in the left lane except when passing, and was ticketed ($105) for it a while back, I didn't understand it at first, but after looking into it more, it kind of makes sense, and it was a lesson learned. Hogging the left lane is obstructive, dangerous, and causes problems for everybody on the road.
@jimbritttn it doesn’t matter if you’re going the speed limit. If you’re in the left lane and not actively passing someone or turning, you’re breaking the law. Nobody expects you to break the speed limit. They expect you to move to the right
At first I was like "WTF?! I always drive in the left lane, what's wrong with that?!" Then I realised here in the UK we drive on the other side of the road...
I had to go around some lady who was camping out in the left lane a few days ago. she was keeping pace with the car next to her and so was absolutely not passing. about 5 miles and I had to go around. she then sped up after I passed and put her brights on and followed me for another five miles. She seemed to be happy to drive faster, as long as she was getting revenge... I didn't cut her off or anything. She just was angry that she was no longer able to set the speed in that lane and felt it was unfair that I took matters into my own hands.
Yeah, it's the tiny ego patrol usually does the left lane rolling. Little people are sad they are losers, they've gotta try and enforce their authority wherever they can. One day they'll do that shit to someone with less to lose, and then they'll be pitted into a median wall at high speeds. Videos of this all over youtube.
Thats when you get next to a sow ass car and block her from passing you. They’ll get the message, if they wanna keep playing games then it looks like the perfect time for an animal to cross the road causing you to emergency stop.
My sister was notorious for this. It used to aggravate the shit out of me when riding shotgun. Twenty cars would be backed up behind her and I'd tell her to move over. She'd say, "I like this side. I don't like the right lane." Her bad driving killed her and she took her two dogs to the grave with her when she ran a stop in Oregon, was T-boned by a van and died instantly. Some drivers should take road tests annually.
I am sorry for your loss of your sister, but driving in the left lane and running a stop sign are two different issues. We all have lapses of judgment, running lights, speeding. You name it. I ran a stop sign and was ticketed, a tree branch had covered the sign. The judge said "the court finds you guilty as charged, fine is..." I even showed him pics of the tree branch covering the sign.
I was traveling I75 north near Ocala, FL and there was a left lane hog with a driver right on his tail. Finally the driver had enough and went to pass the left lane hog, but was too close and clipped the bumper. The front car spun out of control and rolled 7 or 8 times. We went to go check on her. It was an old lady. Her engine caught fire and we had to drag her out and away from the car. Even though the passing driver hit her, it still goes to show what lady lane hoggery can do.
this is the one thing that aggravates me most about drivers. Camping out in the passing lane. No wonder there’s so many road rage incidents. Watch police chases and watch all the fools blocking police cars trying to get in front of them in the passing lane and they are totally oblivious as to what’s going on around them. How the hell did these fools get their drivers licenses?
deftone4u wont make any slightest difference, 4wheelers will do what ever they want to get to their job/grocery store/home fast as they can, speed limit has no affect on them.
Yall talkin about dumbasses sraying lefr lane yet yall dont know how to do the speed limit. Was in a construction for over 5mi and speed was 60 well you know what everyone else was doing...70 o but see a cop yall make the damn traffic come to a stop...sont get me started when shit is hapoenng on the opposite side of the interstate...yall shoupdnt be allowed on the roads i. The first damn place. I hate all of you
If you're not paying attention (doing something other than driving), or are unaware of where you are and what's around you, you have no business driving a vehicle of any kind on America's highways. If you know what you're doing and don't care; i.e., are too selfish and inconsiderate to do the right thing and stay out of the passing lane, you have no business driving a vehicle of any kind on America's highways. I will never understand why people drive in the passing lane for no reason. ...and before any of you left-lane lovers use this argument, let me address it right now: THE SPEED AT WHICH YOU'RE TRAVELING OR WHETHER OR NOT YOU'RE DOING THE SPEED LIMIT IS IRRELEVANT. THE SPEED AT WHICH OTHER DRIVERS ARE TRAVELING IS IRRELEVANT. It has nothing to do with speed, it has to do with COURTESY and CONSIDERATION.
thelittlepilgrim You are talking in terms of state & local laws. I'm talking in terms of common sense and nationally-accepted rules of common courtesy and consideration.
What you're talking about doesn't apply. You're looking at it like walking down a sidewalk or hallway. On the roads in a vehicle, laws apply. . Moreover, how courteous and considerate is it to speed (break the law) and force law abiders to change what they're doing? Common courtesy would be for everyone to follow the law and then after that, not inconvenience other drivers.
thelittlepilgrim Common courtesy also applies when we are driving vehicles. Most of the problems that occur on America's highways could be prevented if people acknowledged that there are people on the road other than them and drove accordingly. If someone is driving faster than you are, it does not affect you. Let them go by. You are not responsible for enforcing speed limits; most of which were arbitrarily selected by state and local governments so they'd have another source of income. However, if someone is driving in the passing lane without passing anyone; especially if they are riding next to a vehicle or vehicles in the right lane, they are impeding the flow of traffic. This causes traffic to back up in long lines of vehicles which are usually travelling bumper-to-bumper or very near it. This is far more dangerous than someone driving 5 or 10 mph over the speed limit. Simple common courtesy and consideration is not too much to ask for from people who should not have to be told to practice it.
But common courtesy would include not breaking the law, and if one is to break the law, not affect others. Speeding does affect others if it causes them to have to change lanes. The courteous thing to do would be for the speeder to do the lane changing. And you talk about other drivers knowing they're not the only ones: That would include lawbreakers knowing THEY'RE not the only ones, and to leave law abiding drivers alone. Yours or anyone's personal opinion of what the speed limit should be doesn't trump what it actually is. My main point is that the burden is on the lawbreaker, and law abiders shouldn't be hassled.
I've talked to people who think they don't have to move over if they're going the speed limit. I've also noticed when people are getting pulled over, sometimes they pull off to the left of the road we were taught you always pull off to the right hand side
"As long as I am doing the speed limit, I can stay in the left lane as long as I want to!!!". What's even more annoying are those left lane bandits who stay in the left lane until the last possible moment and then scurry across five lanes to make the exit.....
0:47 "...or some just don't care" Pretty much sums up a lot of them. That'd change if it were enforced more and they started getting cited for it. People really start caring when their pocketbook takes a hit.
Dear Gov. Abbott: if you passed a law making it a $500 fine for using the left lane for anything other than passing, or driving slow on a one-lane highway and refusing to pull out to allow faster drivers to pass, you would probably get elected Governor for Life. Hell, I'd pay an extra 10 bucks for my tabs to pay for another 5000 state troopers to enforce it. And add a provision for a lifetime license suspension for anyone who gets 3 or more citations for left lane camping.
"I pulled you over for driving in the passing lane" "...but i'm passing" "Who?" "That guy WAAAY up there... I was slowly gaining on him at a moderate rate when you stopped me"
The sad thing is that my police officer friend said that kind of statement will actually get you out of the ticket. Not that you would ever get pulled over for it in the first place.
Spliffer45 the left lane is for passing only, if I am going faster than you in the left lane that means I intend to pass you. If you do not move over then I am forced to slow down behind you until you move over.
Keep Right! Did any of you people commenting actually watch this video? This video that says that it's illegal to block faster speeding traffic. This video that says it's illegal to leave the right lane or enter the passing lane if you're not currently passing? and if you hold up other people you're breaking the law!! these people that are arguing this video that we just watch that says all this stuff is illegal. why are so many people saying that it's not illegal to block faster traffic when it is? and we have this video we just watched it says so. Move over and stay over.
Driving instructors here judge you based on how confident you look and as such everyone becomes confident they know the rules of the road. So when you are confronted with the actual rules one recoils as their head rules is what has worked for them and only that.
Number 1 cause of road rage! Not #3. You're 100 times more likely to get a speeding ticket and 1000 times more likely to die in a cross-over accident in the left lane!
There are four things that need to happen to alleviate this problem. 1. Driver training for ALL drivers, not just teens 17 and under. 2. Completely revamp what is being taught and make it similar to what is taught in Germany and raise the costs paid to the schools accordingly. 3. Make the exams for obtaining a license more intensive. 4. Increase fines for DUI/DWI to include jail time for repeat offenders, as well as for reckless driving, failing to yield for an emergency vehicle, impeding traffic (which would include left lane hogs) and distracted driving.
"Road Rage--1. Texters, 2. Tailgaters, 3. Slow Left Lane Drivers" Wait, there wouldn't be Tailgaters if Texters weren't driving Slowly in the Left Lane!!
I think this is actually true for the middle lane two. If it's a three lane road the middle lane is also a passing lane!!! So much space is not used on the right lane because people think the middle lane is the "cruising lane." I use the right lane to cruise and I actually almost always am able to easily move faster than the middle lane.... that is until I get to the guy doing 65 in a 70 (when the speed limit really should be 80 lol.) I get it, there are situations, and the right lane is definitely the place to drive more slowly. But because the people use the middle lane even though there is clearly space in the right lane I'm blocked by passing by these people making it harder to follow what I understand to be the full keep right law.
J Otto, there are hundreds of laws on the books in all states. You want all the laws to be enforced? Whose taxes do you want to raise to hire the cops to enforce all of the laws? That many cops would change the landscape of America real quick, it would be a police state.
I think the point was... If an officer is watching traffic with the radar or laser, then they should pull someone over for driving in the left lane and not just wait for a speeder.
In Canada the law is the same, use the left lane only for passing, and pull over to the right and stop for emergency vehicles. Some road hogs just don't get it.
I'm an older driver, and tend to drive the speed limit. It is NOT my job, nor anyone else's, to get in the left lane and make you drive the speed limit. If I think you are driving recklessly, I'll call 911 on you, but I'm going to stay out of your way, and in the right lane where I belong All cops care about are writing speeding tickets for profit. If they wanted to make a difference, they would write for following too closely, not signaling lane changes, and driving with parking lights on. Those are reckless driving, careless driving, and stupidity, in that order.
They TALK about this law,but don't ENFORCE IT!! I've seen Pa. State Police drive in the left lane for miles with absolutely no one on the right. Guess they're special.
+Tom My - NO, LEARN TO DRIVE! If that was the case than the Autobahn would have the MOST accidents of anywhere as it is a highway system with NO SPEED LIMIT. Drive on the right, pass on the left and no speed limit is necessary. It is ignorant, clueless drivers who don't look in their rearview mirror on the highway that are causing the accidents AND the traffic jams. MOVE OVER!
+Tom My - see my last comment, then read this copy/paste of someone else commenting on the same video "See, you can't do this in Germany because if someone comes behind you doing 250 km/h and you don't move out of their way, you die. It's that simple. That's why people respect the law."
Statistically, slower drivers cause more accidents. Its harder to see traffic overtaking you. So DON"T DRIVE SLOW, especially in the passing lane! YOU ARE NOT BEING SAFE YOU LEFT LANE BANDIT!
As a Canadian who frequently drives in the USA, I find it hard to understand this bad habit of driving on the left lane when not passing. I heard the Officer in the clip saying that you will get a citation if you do so... Surprise, surprise! I NEVER saw any driver cited in the many years I drove on US roads. BTW, passing on the right is not only caused by the left lane occupied by a slow driver, it's also another bad driving habit of US drivers. As an RV driver, I frequently get passed on the right by super fast drivers who CHOOSE to pas on the right, even though left lane is free. And I don't get passed because I don't belong in my lane, I get passed because getting back to the right lane is dangerous because of those fast right lane drivers coming and blocking my attempted movement. I drove in Europe and of course in Canada and I seldom encounter that kind of behaviour outside of the US.
"it's very nerve wrecking, especially when you have to get to work" ..so than leave your house 10-15 minutes earlier.. if you have to constantly speed to get to work on time than you should drive to work a little bit earlier
Why should she have to leave home earlier to accommodate someone driving slow on the fast lane? Whatever excuse you could think of, the lanehogger shouldn’t be in the left lane. She shouldn’t have to leave home earlier because of their lack of courtesy on the public road.
Ken Rodbender you better think long and hard about engaging in road rage to drive home a point. Dash cams are becoming more common as the days go by. If you go out there and set off a major collision and it is on a video, how much sympathy do you think a judge or jury is going to have for you??? You are running up the odds and they are not in your favor.
The lady said some people are from other parts of the country but driving the rightmost lane except while passing is a law in every state in the country it is a federal mandate that every state must have a law that says keep right except to pass. It's always illegal in the United States to drive out of the rightmost lane unless you're passing.
Its called in your handbook ' slower traffic keep right'.....by knowing this information when first applying for your license, you got your license.....dont forget it.
This makes no sense. You are effectively reducing all multi lane roads to a one lane road. It would be more reasonable to say "You must keep to the right if you are not going the speed limit." If the traffic is going the speed limit, there can be no legal passing. What's funny is all these people would probably approve of the zipper merge, which encourages full use of all lanes until they end.
Mark Jones Federal Law requires that your speedometer show accurately to 110 miles an hour because federal law states that passing requires breaking the speed limit temporarily to be safe. the danger only exist when you get so freaky about the exactness of never ever ever breaking the posted limit even while passing be realistic be safe. you passing on a dashed yellow line in a 55 Zone that he expect you to go 80 if you're passing they just expect you not to be going 60 once you get way heading back in your lane
Mark Jones please specify your state. if you're referring to where I said federal law that has to do with how highways are designed and funded but enforcement is on the state level so uniform vehicle code of the road would be dependent on State to find the specific code material and where it applies to you. my reference to speedometers up 210 does not suggest that police officers are going to allow you to go hundred miles an hour. I'm just saying that they do not "expect" you to stop at 71 when the speed limit is 70 just because that's the maximum allowance.
Short answer: California. Long answer: I really had no idea it was legal in some states to exceed the limit for passing, but now you've forced me to educate myself. A quick look at google tells me it is indeed so. So, apologies, and thanks for the learning experience! (As painful as they may be ☺️)
and even after watching this video. people still think they have every right to HAUL ASS on the left lane from the time they got on the freeway, till the very last moment just right before an exit.
So get in the right lane you idiot. Let those who haul ass get a speeding ticket. What is it to you? Don’t be the stupid guy cruising in the left lane when there’s traffic going faster than you.
it is not a culture of complacency. it is a culture of ignorance. left lane snoozers cause faster divers to start weaving through traffic in the right lanes which is dangerous.
I always find it funny when you get someone camped out in the left lane and someone behind them finally gets so angry passes him and gets back over immediately in the left lane and continues to be a camper themselves!
The solution is actually pretty simple. We just need to require *real* driver training. Making the content of the laws more accessible and understandable to the average person would also help, not just on the road but in all areas of life.
I am an honorably-retired police officer with a successful law enforcement career spanning 30 years. I did stop offenders camping in the left lane. But the other law mentioned in this video, is also very important. When you see and/or hear the emergency lights and/or siren of an emergency vehicle, the law requires you to IMMEDIATELY move ALL THE WAY to the RIGHT and then STOP COMPLETELY. It doesn't mean speed up and try to make your left turn before the officer reaches you. It doesn't mean slow down and continue to drive with two wheels on the shoulder. It doesn't mean pull to the left. It doesn't mean try to guess which car I'm trying to pull over. It doesn't mean to jerk the steering wheel back and forth and stomp the brakes when you come out of your road coma. It doesn't mean do nothing because the officer is going another direction. It doesn't mean do nothing because you think you haven't done anything wrong. It is important to know that most police officers are medically trained to the level of EMR (Emergency Medical Responder), carry medical equipment to included AED (Automated External Defibrilator), have high-performane EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) training, and most police cars cars will do 150 mph. Fire trucks and ambulances do not do 150 mph. That's why it is not unusual for police to arrive at medical calls long before anyone else. So if your infant stops breathing, and Dispatch sends the police and medics, how would YOU want all of the motorists between that officer and your infant to respond to the flashing emergency lights and siren on that officer's patrol car?
I think it’s just that people don’t care anymore. You can be on a road with one lane for each direction, be doing 10 over the speed limit, and someone will still tailgate you. You have to hit the shoulder of the road and wave them past you for them to “get it.”
Its up and down with this issue. If right lanes are congested and passing lane is clear. the drivers that wants to go faster will stay in the passing lane and not want to keep having to pass and keep getting over. that is the issue. Unless right lanes are less congested to allow for safer passing all the time . that is a different story. Move over slow pokes. Right lane should be for speed limit.Middle lanes 5-10. left lane whatever speed is safe for the situation.
No one follows driving laws or show any consideration for anyone else on the road... might as well clog that left lane too. The new rules are dont follow the rules.
Ive got a better solution. When Im out on low congestion area between city Interstate sections, I dont like to get bunched up in the right lane with too many cars and shorter following distances between me and the next vehicle ahead of me. So I will ride in the left lane for awhile to see what happens, sometimes the other vehicle to my right passes, slows down, or rides on side of me, all the while no one is behind me. If the vehicle to right exits, then i get back over to right lane, if someone comes up from behind me I get over to right, no problem, even though sometimes they then dont pass me then , but just ride on left side of me. This way I get the best of all worlds, longer following distances, the option to pass, or speed up, and drivers behind me can get through. To me its not a race, I have no embarrassment that someone is faster than me and Ill get over. Keep in mind that if you are following someone and they are doing 70, as read on your speedometer, you may need to do 75 or more to pass, and continue moving away, if you go 75, then drop down to 70 again after passing you will eventually be next to the car you passed again, so keep an eye on speed and remember what you were doing 5 minutes ago. I try to keep a constant speed of some command. Also, forget the cruise control in left lane, stop being lazy.
There is more to this than what’s reported. The big question that has to be asked is…….why are people in that left lane? Correct that issue and the left lane issue will correct itself. 1) That rule could be considered outdated. There is a LOT more vehicles on the road since that law was first made. Just think how far traffic would be backed up if everyone on the road where there are 2 lane going in one direction and everyone was in the right lane. Legally if everyone was doing the maximum speed limit in the right lane then no one would legally be able to drive in the left lane. Wow! That would be a long line. 2) The right lane is where people merge into traffic and most don’t know how to properly merge forcing drivers in that lane to hit the brakes or people in the right lane thinking they have to stop to let merging traffic in. That’s why a lot people drive in the left lane, it’s less hassle. 3) The left lane is not the Audubon!! The speed limit applies to the left lane the same as it applies to the right lane! My biggest issue with left lane drivers are the ones that BLOCK the flow of traffic. Honestly I don’t care what lane you’re in or how fast or slow you are going in that lane. As long as I can pass you “left or right lane” I’m good with it. I don’t care if there are 2 lanes or 10 lanes going in the same direction. There is just too much traffic to not use that left lane.
Now sometimes I’ll ride in the left lane when the right lane is worn out and the state refuses to fix it but when a car gets behind me I do pull over so they can go around me
Maybe that is just Texas on emergency vehicles. Here in BC, by default its right, but on the two-lane highway where the jam is already happened, in most cases, we would go both directions and let the emergency vehicle pass in the middle.
In Germany, if you stay on the left lane in Autobahn for no reason at all, you get pulled over and get fined. Time for US cops to get their acts together.
I always drive in the right lane on divided highways, and pass on the left, then back to the tight, unless there’s a stopped vehicle on the right shoulder, if it’s clear, I move to the left until clear, then move back to the right.
NC drivers are the worst at cruising in the left lane 🙄 they do it selfishly and have the mentality of ‘I’m going the speed limit so they can go around me on the right’
For a country of cars the USA is seriously lagging behind on laws. Driving on the right is mandatory by law in most if not all European countries. You'll quickly learn this rule when there is a BMW or Audi tailgating you while flashing all his lights. In most European countries (number is increasing) vehicles have to keep an "alley" open between 2nd and 3rd (3 lane ) or 1st and 2nd lane (2 lane) road. So one lane vehicles have to keep to the left, one to the right.
These rules are usually inaccurate. Would be pointless to have 2 or 3 lanes just so people could pass one another. The purpose of having that many lanes is to transport more vehicles through an area. So in that case it is inevitable to have vehicles occupying all lanes. Otherwise you get congestion. I do find it funny when everyone wants this law enforced. But speeding seems to be okay. You can't just pick and choose the laws you want to obey. It's all about everyone's safety. Not some people's convenience. Just saying.
The right lanes of the interstate are in such terrible condition they are unsafe. I use the left lane to avoid damage to my vehicle and risk loss if control, BUT I keep a close watch on my mirrors and yield the lane immediately to anyone passing me.
as a speed-limit prius driver, I always stay in the rightmost lane, except when the freeway splits and I'm going thru the left split. In light traffic, I prefer to get in the correct lane 2 miles before the split, so I will speed up to match the flow of traffic. I hate idiots in their little bubble who are oblivious the everyone around them.
The easiest thing is to adopt Germany's Autobahn rules nationwide! Hog the left lane, get busted; refuse to vacate the left lane to traffic coming up on the rear, get busted Emergency evacuation: right lane traffic pulls to the right, left lane traffic pulls to the left, Emergency vehicles split the lane in the center!
In North Carolina if you are in the left lane you cannot be under the posted speed limit or you WILL get a ticket but if youre at or slightly above the speed limit youre fine
Been to Texas a few times now and overall they do a good job with not hogging the left lane in comparison to here in FL where they simply don't care hop in the left lane as soon as they get on the road and stay in it. While it was not perfect I think the sings saying "state law left lane for passing only" on every highway helps its the law in FL as well but I really don't think anyone in FL knows it. At this point I pretty much use the middle or right lane here in FL as 99% of the time it is fast than the hog filled left lane.
Feel they mostly do it because they realize somebody behind them going in and out of lanes because they’re better than everyone. I’ll gladly do that if I see it happening. Don’t cry for a change in this, and go off speeding because you’re free to do it.
She was super chill once I said that though.
she needs to lose her teaching license
Female examiner? I guess you were the instructor...
So many people really aren't qualified for their jobs.
@@johnleeson6946 "Female driving instructor" is an oxymoron.
typical female!
Then pull them all over and fine them $500. The world would be a much better place if the law enforcement would actually enforce this type of laws.
What about the people who use the excuse "fast lane" to go 100 mph
they are risking getting a ticket as well lol youre not the person whos supposed to enforce the law the cops are
Erwin Schrödinger lol exactly
how about warning for first violation, and warning for second violation, $100 fine for 3rd violation, 30 hours community service plus $100 fine for 4th violation.
most people drive on the left lane because they don't know better, so educate them.
then you fine them.
and take times away from them cuz those who drive fast on left lane probably value their time more than their money. if you make $1000 per day, i can see why you would speed everywhere
catsspat. Be even more better if they enforced the damn speed limit...none of you fucking idiots even know what that is.
Personally I like the old saying; "If you are passed on the right, move to the right". I believe it is self explanatory.
you should not wait to be passes on the right to move over !
just move over unless you are currently passing someone that is on your right !
Personally I like the old saying; "Your comment was stupid, you fucking idiot". I believe it is self explanatory.

Absolutely....great saying to live by.......because in the real world, lots of peole go over the limit.
Narcissist drive slow in the left lane on purpose, they thrive on your anxiety.
Either they mess with your anxiety on purpose or they’re just lost and don’t know where they are going.
JR Selsing I’m trying to change my ways. But I usually do whatever possible to forcibly move them to the left lane / scare the fuck out of them.
Lol well said.
I just ride behind them with my high beams on
This video needs to be shown in every single drivers education class
Most wouldn't understand. " If I'm driving the speed limit bla bla bla "
I saw someone get pulled over for camping out in the left lane and when an unmarked cop just flashed his high beams at the guy to get him to move over, the driver brake checked the cop..... Ooopsie!!

It's not a worldwide law. www.google.com/amp/jalopnik.com/5501615/left-lane-passing-laws-a-state-by-state-map/amp?client=safari
thelittlepilgrim _ Yes, at one time long ago people would just pass in the left lane. They would happily move to the right after passing. Now this country is full of self entitled idiots who do what they want. This is causing states to make the left lane laws. When in the past this was just common curtesy. No law state I have to move over to let someone on the freeway but people do out of common curtesy.
Platinumrings exactly people do this because they think, I’m doing the speed limit so the people behind me are trying to break the law by passing me.
1:20- “as soon as you pass, move over”? Not until you give passed car room, usually 3 car lengths at the minimum, at highway speeds. 2 tractor trailer lengths minimum. For any reason you have to stop suddenly, that truck will crush you if you cut him off.
NOBODY.... I MEAN NOBODY gets a ticket for driving in the left lane and not passing, THATS why people do in the US.
sad but true.......... slower traffic move to the right lane please!
You will in Georgia
It's not a worldwide law. Depends on jurisdiction
eric wsmith you can't say nobody does!!! that's what this whole conversation is about is us watching videos of people getting tickets for what you're insisting nobody gets.
very strange opinion you have that what you see happening isn't happen.
Tennessee does now. A visitor even made a UA-cam video about getting a ticket there.
Yeah, now lets' see the cops act on this. Where there is no enforcement, there is no law.
Agreed
Yeah we have the same problem here in the UK. They spend millions building a fourth lane and the inside lane is empty...
That's not true. The law applies whether it's enforced or not. People just have the ideology that it's legal unless you get caught. But that thinking is incorrect.
$500 fine? Psshhhhh. They'll enforce that.
Nothing good will come of it.
da Cat 100% correct
I'm often surprised people have no concept of blocking traffic, or will even consider themselves the passing lane police, figuring they should stop everyone from speeding.
they do not care, they are too puffed with self righteous indignation to give a damn about impeding.
nevermind that it creates more dangers than one who is speeding, in their little hypocritical minds, they are in the right.
da Cat
AMEN !!
Listen to the news story listen to the police, stop arguing pointless details like speeding and speed limits which has nothing to do with the topic whatsoever.
Keep right except to pass.
slower traffic keep right.
Notice the consistent word here is KEEP.
This is the very ignorance everyone is ignoring the word keep and stupidly arguing empty unrelated excuses to ignore the most important word here keep. why do so many people think that this news story is so wrong?
all people insisting on blocking the left lane are fucking assholes in my opinion.
richgs76 If you’re in the left lane and passing cars, then you aren’t doing anything wrong.
I learned to drive in Germany and feel far more comfortable at 160 kph on the Autobahn than I do at much slower speeds on the American Interstate.
and wonder why their are so few deathly accident in Germany. And 15 years and getting a driver licences also does't help
In Germany, you're taught to drive. In the U.S., you're taught to pass a basic driving test.
As someone who did get pulled over for being in the left lane except when passing, and was ticketed ($105) for it a while back, I didn't understand it at first, but after looking into it more, it kind of makes sense, and it was a lesson learned. Hogging the left lane is obstructive, dangerous, and causes problems for everybody on the road.
if you were doing the speed limit the ticket is invalid; if you are passing a car doing 69.5 MPH and you are doing 70 you are RIGHT
@@jimbritttnyou sir are not the law, if they're speeding it's on the law officers not you to correct them.
@@carlbuschman and you sir don't have the right to expect me to break the speeding law in the left lane
@jimbritttn it doesn’t matter if you’re going the speed limit. If you’re in the left lane and not actively passing someone or turning, you’re breaking the law. Nobody expects you to break the speed limit. They expect you to move to the right
What's wrong with common sense?
People think the left lane is the "good" or the "cool guy" lane, or the right lane is the "loser" lane or something, the way I've seen people drive.
Maybe that's just you projecting.
At first I was like "WTF?! I always drive in the left lane, what's wrong with that?!" Then I realised here in the UK we drive on the other side of the road...
caballero then don’t drive on the right lane instead you are passing someone over
I had to go around some lady who was camping out in the left lane a few days ago. she was keeping pace with the car next to her and so was absolutely not passing. about 5 miles and I had to go around. she then sped up after I passed and put her brights on and followed me for another five miles.
🤦🤦🤦
Thats when you get next to a sow ass car and block her from passing you. They’ll get the message, if they wanna keep playing games then it looks like the perfect time for an animal to cross the road causing you to emergency stop.
She thinks she's the speed police. Just another jerk.
My sister was notorious for this. It used to aggravate the shit out of me when riding shotgun. Twenty cars would be backed up behind her and I'd tell her to move over. She'd say, "I like this side. I don't like the right lane."
Her bad driving killed her and she took her two dogs to the grave with her when she ran a stop in Oregon, was T-boned by a van and died instantly.
Left lane drivers are so annoying on the highway. In Pennsylvania they have laws specifically on driving on the left side of the highway.
Shoulda let her die. No excuse for that bullshit. Keep grandma off the road.
@@Djevan41598 every state does
this is the one thing that aggravates me most about drivers. Camping out in the passing lane. No wonder there’s so many road rage incidents. How the hell did these fools get their drivers licenses?
Finally you guys do a story about this!!!

Rage much?
The passing lane only applies in certain jurisdictions.
thelittlepilgrim You are talking in terms of state & local laws.
0:47 "...or some just don't care"
Pretty much sums up a lot of them.
If you go the speed limit in the right lane, you’ll get along with everybody.
Seems to me like the camera car was also always in the left lane.

Michael Cole that's golden right there

The sad thing is that my police officer friend said that kind of statement will actually get you out of the ticket. Not that you would ever get pulled over for it in the first place.
Ok you're free to go watch yourself I'm gonna go get my donut on
Hogging the left lane is for the most part what causes people to tailgate.
Spliffer45 the left lane is for passing only, if I am going faster than you in the left lane that means I intend to pass you. If you do not move over then I am forced to slow down behind you until you move over.
This act is far worse than the lane hogger.
I thought the left lane was for retired people that don't really know how to drive. That's where they drive in my town.
I have to ask those who love to drive in the left lane " Does a two lane highway drive you nuts?"
Slow Left Lane Drivers"
Wait, there wouldn't be Tailgaters if Texters weren't driving Slowly in the Left Lane!!
If you pass someone on the right side you lose your driver's license in Sweden.
Please god run this news story on blast. Play it every day nationally.
Why don't officers actually enforce these laws? They are made to make driving more efficient and safe
If I think you are driving recklessly, I'll call 911 on you, but I'm going to stay out of your way, and in the right lane where I belong
All cops care about are writing speeding tickets for profit. If they wanted to make a difference, they would write for following too closely, not signaling lane changes, and driving with parking lights on. Those are reckless driving, careless driving, and stupidity, in that order.
Michael Gilbert shut up gilbert
Someone driving with parking lights on makes you call 911? Wreckless? Maybe in the pitch dark. Can't you get a fine for needlessly calling 911?
Fast lanes introduces and reinforces bad driving behaviors
The problem is the same in alot of highways the world over. The laws are there but very seldom enforced, so people act like the laws don't exist.
They TALK about this law,but don't ENFORCE IT!! I've seen Pa. State Police drive in the left lane for miles with absolutely no one on the right. Guess they're special.
If you don’t understand or know the law you shouldn’t have a drivers license .
90% of the problems are because of people operating outside the posted speed range. Law enforcement needs to put its focus here.

NO 90 % is fricking PEOPLE AND PHONES!!
Some people should not be allowed to operate a vehicle.
Statistically, slower drivers cause more accidents. Its harder to see traffic overtaking you. So DON"T DRIVE SLOW, especially in the passing lane! YOU ARE NOT BEING SAFE YOU LEFT LANE BANDIT!
I stay in the right lane BUT alot of freeways force u into off ramps. So middle or right. Unless ur passing
Germans helped build them rockets. It's time to get some Germans to help teach them how to drive.
I learned this in the driver's guide book 50 years.
Keep the left lane clear
"it's very nerve wrecking, especially when you have to get to work" ..so than leave your house 10-15 minutes earlier.. if you have to constantly speed to get to work on time than you should drive to work a little bit earlier
One day a person like you would blocked the emergency vehicles on the way to your love ones, then you would become an opponent of left lane hogs!
Why should she have to leave home earlier to accommodate someone driving slow on the fast lane? Whatever excuse you could think of, the lanehogger shouldn’t be in the left lane. She shouldn’t have to leave home earlier because of their lack of courtesy on the public road.
Ooooh shit, you’re the fucking WORST kind of lane hog. I’ll run you off the fucking road homie! You a fucking left lane hall monitor type girlscout
If dash cam is involved, then the left lane driver will be held accountable for obstructing the flow of traffic.
The lady said some people are from other parts of the country but driving the rightmost lane except while passing is a law in every state in the country it is a federal mandate that every state must have a law that says keep right except to pass.
It's always illegal in the United States to drive out of the rightmost lane unless you're passing.
"they don't understand the laws, or some just don't care" It more like most don't care then the prior.
Please cite a vehicle code allowing speeding for the purpose of passing.
(As painful as they may be ☺️)
Mark Jones wrong. If youre not willing to go 5 over you are restricitng the capabilities of the road
Cruise control is a major reason for left lane drivers.
You can easily spot a cruse control driver.
and even after watching this video. people still think they have every right to HAUL ASS on the left lane from the time they got on the freeway, till the very last moment just right before an exit.

So ya damn right i do
So get in the right lane you idiot.
The "Valley". Worst driving I have ever experienced.
I always find it funny when you get someone camped out in the left lane and someone behind them finally gets so angry passes him and gets back over immediately in the left lane and continues to be a camper themselves!
Every second counts except when firefighters are sleeping.
The news is so polite about it
when my kids were 12 and 13, I started to teach them to drive. Even at THAT age, they had better sense to clog the left lane.
I miss living. in Germany, awesome lane discipline. Same with Spain.
Many left lane drivers believe that they are making others adhere to the speed limit.
When you are being passed on the right, you're in the wrong lane.
I think it’s just that people don’t care anymore. You can be on a road with one lane for each direction, be doing 10 over the speed limit, and someone will still tailgate you. You have to hit the shoulder of the road and wave them past you for them to “get it.”
I can't even get away going the speed limit because everyone is going 90 even trucks, like these truck companies shouldn't allow that
If I pass you on the right, you're in the wrong lane.
In Louisiana the fine is $1000 for the first offence.
RE EDUCATE ALL DRIVERS IN THE USA. Then ticket. Mercilessly. This has happened because of DECADES of no consequences.
Slow driving in the left lane should be punished with a taser.
All of the people interviewed are left lane drivers I can just tell
Also, forget the cruise control in left lane, stop being lazy.
speeding is also illegal, so just be careful what you wish for
but staying in the left lane is illegal
PEOPLE DO WHAT THEY GET BY WITH!
Come on Calvin. are you really that fucking stupid. Being a douchebag (or in your case an enema nozzle) in the passing lane is dangerous and illegal.
Hog the left lane, get busted;
refuse to vacate the left lane to traffic coming up on the rear, get busted
Emergency evacuation:
right lane traffic pulls to the right,
left lane traffic pulls to the left,
Emergency vehicles split the lane in the center!
I wish this would actually get enforced.
In North Carolina if you are in the left lane you cannot be under the posted speed limit or you WILL get a ticket but if youre at or slightly above the speed limit youre fine
Being on the phone isn't an excuse. For being somewhere your not supposed to be in the first place.
They should make cruising in the left lane a misdemeanor.
Ignoring left lane laws create talgators because most of the time, somebody's talgating you is because they want you to get out of their way.
For some reason on I-80 in Iowa it’s common. Been that way for years and years
95% of the people on the road have no business behind the wheel, due to ignorance
