Left lanes are for passing vehicles, per Florida law

  • How fast or slow a vehicle travels in a left lane can be a polarizing topic among Florida drivers, but state law requires all drivers to treat it as a passing lane.
Even if you’re driving the speed limit on the furthermost left lane, and another vehicle - driving faster than you - approaches you from behind, Florida law states you must move out of the left lane, Officer Roy with the Tampa Police Department explained on Good Day Tampa Bay.

On a city road, I also stay on the passenger's side lane until in the block I am ready to make left turn. Being blocked from entering the left turn lane and having to wait for next green light is wasting time and gas, so assume other people would feel the same.

You're not looking for opportunities to turn left. You're looking to turn left at the appropriate time. You still don't need to be cruising along in the left lanywhere. Because traffic needs to be passing to the left not passing on any random side.
People need to be trained to pass on the same side and allow passing on the same side. So it's less chaotic howard driving.
Yes, sometimes you need to, but we're talking about anybody. That does it unnecessarily and makes excuses. It is for just automatically moving towards the left or towards the middle. There are situations where you turn left and immediately or soon. You need to turn left again but if you're not doing that. Stay to the right, maybe not the far right, but if you got multi lanes, stay towards the right, not the middle of the left whenever you can.
Just for courtesy common sense, safety the law etc. But just cause you don't have to is not an excuse or shouldn't be an excuse to be unsafely. In people's way just cause people shouldn't be going as fast as they're going. Doesn't mean we should add more danger to the situation

Meaning that in GA if you are driving 80mph in the left lane and a car approaching your rear is doing 95mph and the speed limit on that road is 70mph, you're still required by law to move over to the right to let them pass.

1:57 - Absolutely not, Florida law also says you cannot drive past the speed limit! Let's say the speed limit is 65 mph. If the person already in the "passing lane" is driving 65 mph, he cannot be overtaken unless you speed, which is against Florida law! No judge is going to give you a pass for speeding in the left lane to overtake someone. 2:50, he just contradicted himself!

I thought the purpose of the passing lane is to keep a clear lane so that emergency vehicles always have a travel route. Keeping a car’s space behind the car in front of you is ample space to pull to the side if there isnt a clear lane and one needs to be created.

  • @Harley46835

Since I was in pre-school, it's been taught and insinuated that the left lane, at very least regarding state roads, interstates, and other highways, is the PASSING lane, and the right lane, is the "cruising" lane.... Well, too many misuse all lanes, even the HOV(HIGH OCCUPANCY(MORE THAN 1 PERSON IN VEHICLE DURING BUSINESS TRAFFIC)LANE...... For too long, I won't even bother throwing out any guess at just how long, far too many have ignored these state and federal mandated rules of the road, whether by racing in all lanes, or idling in all lanes, in whatever manner, or worse, there are too many losers who occupy what should be passing lanes, by matching the speed of the vehicle either immediately in front or behind them, with no clear consideration shown to anyone else, and these same losers develop and exhibit road rage, and too many of them intentionally risk and attempt to cause wrecks, when they perceive the car that is approaching them, especially in the left lane(s). If these losers would refrain from their bad displays of improper driving, and extreme displays of being void of courtesy and consideration, there would likely, in short order, be likely a 60% decrease in safety accidents across the entire board, which would mean that insurance premiums would be able to be forced to be decreased, even at the displeasure of any insurance company/lobbyist..... Now, Illinois, under the stewardship of Blago(yes he was crooked as capone), enacted a stiff and defined law, nearly 15 years ago, which was labeled, or stated as a "NO LOITERING" law, where by police are able and encouraged to cite anyone caught loitering in the ''PASSING" lane, especially when that loiterer does not show courtesy to any vehicles, especially emergency units, that come upon them in the left lane(s).... As far as I know, either the same time, before or shortly after, other states, such as Tennessee, and Florida actually considered, if not chose to write and enact similar citations/laws. Sadly, last I saw, all 3 states have lazily enforced these citations, and these and other states, instead of enforcing these reasonably citations/laws, have wasted money, and material, and chose to take the opposite route, rather than choose to beautify their highways and such, they chose, and to this day, choose to ruin the scenery, by, using I65 in the Nashville, Tennessee area as example, expanding the sizes of the road, by wastefully adding lanes, to the degree that they could just as easily land jetliners, instead of enforcing sensible laws and citations, and otherwise genuinely encouraging proper driving, and discouraging stupidity..... Anyway, unless the municipalities choose to enforce the laws already in effect, especially those that are just and or at least make fruitful sense, writing newer citations and laws like this, will do nothing to improve driving conditions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It should be possible to get a 2nd driver license that proves you van drive faster at the same safety as before and speed limits should be changed based on the every single whether condition but becuase the world is poor we are stuck with a ghetto system.

GA 40-6-40 says the only reasons for temporarily leaving the rigjt lane.
All states have laws to comply with federal regulations of this propwr lane usage.
It is illegal in the US to slow faster traffic out of the driving lane and in states with "SlowPoke" law it can be a road rage charge to block a faster moving even obviously speeding car.

A second thought, though I promise a much smaller declaration; Too many people ignore and or incite problems on roadways, while occupying the "Cruising" lane, they show no desire or courtesy toward everyone else, by doing things, such as driving no slower than how they perceive those in the neighboring lanes, or, when a vehicle attempts to safely pass them, they accelerate to impede traffic, where by the passing vehicle commonly has to excessively speed up, usually 15mph above reason, just to even attempt to move over.... Likewise, there are too many dummies who do the slightly opposite, especially during heavy traffic, by intentionally retarding their speed, in the same vane intent/desire..... So, unless municipalities actually want to return to more 90's presence, where they actually post an acceptable quantity of patrol vehicles on high use roadways, especially on interstates, no newly written retread citation/law should be proposed or enacted! The left of 2 lanes, or the left 2 of a 4+ lane highway should be maintained as passing(not extra cruising) lanes

People argue that them obeying the speed limit gives them the right to ignore these other laws. It will not work, it's already law. It already has been law but floridians are too ignorant it will not work.
It spent on the book for years Florida 316.081 (2)
Drive in the right most line except while passing, do your passing to the left and return to the right most lane.
Every single state has an equivalent law. Florida has 2 or 3 other redundant laws that say. Do not slow down faster traffic and keep right. Stay in the right most lane, but we ignorantly ignore them. The police don't want to obey that law. So they're not going to enforce that law.
Really the police don't know the law so they can't enforce it.
So why would this law not be equally ignored????
The speed limit is the only law that people's limited brains can handle.
Keep right except to pass is always the law. But people argue that it's not when there's not a sign blatantly telling them to get over.
If florida lawmakers are passing laws that ALREADY exist and too ignorant to realize these laws already exist. There's no way they're going to be able to enforce this one with so much perpetuated and supported ignorance.
People are just too ignorant entitled & argumentative to obey or recognise this law.
There are too many drivers on the road that are driving beyond their driving limit and making them be aware of as much as they're supposed to be aware of while they're driving, it's not realistic. It's not something they will agree with. It's not something they will obey. It's not something they will take part in. It will not work and I know this. Because it's always been that way and it has not worked. It's already law. It does not work because of ignorance.
Cops are people and cops are ignorant to the law. They will not enforce this law because they do not know. It exists because they do not want to have to obey it themselves.
People listen to their dumb. Daddy say getting one lane and stay there. But that's not legal driving the right most lane except while passing do not impede main street autumn paid means do not impede, but people make excuses for why they get to and why this doesn't apply to them.
Florida has redundant laws that already say this. But we are too ignorant to obey or enforce or realize.
This is worthless and has been proven over and over and over again. The law already exists the law already exists. We're too ignorant to know that the law already exists several times over.
People argue that obeying the speed limit gives them the right to ignore all of the other laws.

Some times when i stay in the left lane its beause cars will be entering the freeway or i may be fixing to pass a slower motorist, this happens in heavy traffic. And if traffic is entering and vehicles are driving in the left lane, please don't bolt around on the right and cut in front, this is very dangerous and you are Not going to go any faster than the vehicle in front on me, cops do Not stop motorist for these actions. Also if i move over to let you pass in the Precious let lane why do most of you not move to the right lane after passing.... its only most, not all. and where is it written " serious question here " speed has priority over law abiding " obeying the speed limit " ???? Also why so many but not all people drive like they're running from the cops only to pull into a fast food resturant, this i also see constantly. Also try using your cruise control and not worring about every other motorist out there, it makes the drive much easier on the rest of us. And when was the last time you were almost involved in a crash with a motorist driving in the Left Lane?, my guess while you were tailgating. Most crashes occur because motorist are trying to get in front of other motorist. Remember you are not the only motorist on the road and this is Not Germany in the 1980s. Thank You for reading.

I'd also ask that if you're planning on passing someone, don't be planning to pass for 10 miles. Pass them within a minute and two and then move over. I get sick of sitting behind someone that's supposedly attempting to overtake another vehicle but doing it at .5 miles per hour faster than the vehicle they're attempting to pass. Pass the vehicle and move over. That's how it's done.

I used to yell at my wife for driving in the left lane the whole time, but then I realized, at least for her, it creates a safety bubble. No one can cut you off, they have to pass on the right. If they ride your tail just slow down until they have no choice but to go around.

You want to 'ask' them to move to the right so that everyone can proceed safely.

Are you saying everybody even those entering from the slip road and who wants to pass should move over and queue behind this idiot? If undertaking was so dangerous then it would be illegal.

I've done a few ride along shifts with the locals and one with FHP. I asked each one about this and they all said they would not issue a ticket to someone who passed above the speed limit and then moves back to the right and slows back down to a "reasonable speed".
I lived in Europe for many years. People may haul ass, but they know how to drive better than most Americans. I promise you will get out of the left hand lane there. The German Police are will ticket you if you impede traffic. BTW- You can't haul ass on every road in Germany. Much of the Autobahn has speed limits in many areas. Florida is awful because we also have no Primary texting law. You can not be pulled over for just texting, it has to be incident to another reason such as speeding along with texting. It's stupid and our rear end collision rate has sky rocketed. It's killing people and our legislature keeps dragging their feet on passing a primary "Distracted Driving" law which encompasses a lot more distractions than a cell phone. Example- Saw a guy reading the paper on his steering wheel one day. Nothing like time management.
My other complaint...……………round abouts. We keep building them and no one knows how to navigate them. Once again Europe taught me that one. They work if you utilize them correctly. The morons here either never yield or signal out of the circle. Yes turn signals are required in traffic circles to inform those which spoke you are exiting so the traffic can continue to move. Other wise the people stop at yield signs and wait when they could have kept the traffic flow moving. Others just keep "charging the circle" and never yield to anyone. Keep your head on a swivel. :)

I love it!! These slugs that block the left (the fast lane) need to be punished. I make sure that when Income upon one of these slugs when I pass them I cut back over as close to them as I can. Example this morning one of these losers cut right in front of a car about 3 ahead of me and then drove below the posted speed limit. Blocking traffic. Finally a break opened up and one by one we all passed that slug and shaved them off as we got back over. The slug started flashing lights and was met by the driver’s giving them the international sign for hello. What a punk. Next can we do something about these slugs that refuse to pull up normally in drive-thru’s that throw everything off? We already have a law prohibiting large trucks (18 wheelers, big box trucks, vehicles that are towing) from driving in the left lane. That would be awesome too!! My son calls these lousy liberal drivers. Love it b

Ah, so it’s the rude Florida drivers that are coming to other states that think I should move out of their way when I’m doing 5-10+ MPH over the speed limit in the left lane, already exceeding the rate of traffic and the lanes to my right are open. Makes so much sense now. Your laws breed entitlement.

that's a 2 way street cause when ever you out of state folk come to Florida yall think that its ok to hog the left lane and not get over and camp next to slow traffic in the right lane, cant tell you how many none Florida cars I pass on the way to work in the left lane a day my highest count was 60 and that was in 50miles. See in Florida most highway's a freeway are like the German autobahn its not a rare sight to see a group of 10 pickups doing around 90-100 together down the freeway and runnin 80 in 65's even semi trucks Ive seen runnin and 90 on the highways we want to get where we are going if there's room we will go right around you but if your playing games or playing on your phone were riding bumpers or passing you threw the grass its not entitlement its common sense the left is for faster traffic to pass.

We’ve all got places to be. Doesn’t mean you can just ignore the speed limit and force people out of your way, especially if they are already over the limit. That my friend, is entitlement.

@@frase32 - I don’t “camp” in the left lane. I am typically outpacing all the other vehicles… that is, until someone with a big ego gets behind me and thinks changing lanes is my problem. I don’t hold up traffic… it’s always the one guy who feels they’re in the right and could easily go around, but instead they choose to tailgate… which by the way, is also illegal, in addition to going 10+ over the posted limit 😉
It’s funny how you’re trying to make a point about how fortunate it is that these laws are in place, yet you ignore the fact that these people are breaking the laws themselves. The irony of entitlement.

@@HiThisIsMine I regularly drive I90 in New York. The posted speed limit is 65mph. The flow of traffic is certainly at least 75mph if not 80mph. If your going 70 in the left lane and sit there because you raitonalize, "I'm going above the speed limit" you're going to have a line of cars piled up behind you.
The point of the left lane laws is to make sure that doesn't happen.
People who drive the left lane and don't get over when the normal flow of traffic is faster than them quite literally make the roads more dangerous. Which is why these laws are being enacted. But, at least you can take comfort in your perceived moral high ground.
