    I have a de and had start up rattle. De’s had a crappy tensioner. 05+ had the revised one. I got the revised tensioner and it helped with the start up rattles a ton. I found using 10 weight oil vs. 5, helps with the start up rattles.

    Hey Anthony, I am going to try this after watching your video so thank you! Do I need to put the engine at top dead center before I start or would it be wise to use the tdc marks ? I just don't want to mess it up. It's my first time messing with timing and I want to do the water pump too since I am in there. So again, do I start at tdc? Would it be wise to start there?

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  2 роки тому +5

      It won't hurt to start there. Make sure to secure the wheels because you might need to put the transmission in neutral to turn the engine over from the crank pulley. Also disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  • @stopher1971
    @stopher1971 8 місяців тому

    Also, if your tensioner is not all the way extended out, which if it was, your timing would probably be off at that point then it may be in between clicks and it’s backing off to the nearest tooth and giving you that rattle without putting too much tension try to get another click

    Anthony, im getting a rattle at startup and turn off, and strictly at 2750rpm up. i swore up and down it was rodknock but all my local 350z enthusiasts are saying its this tensioner. i havent got any metal in the Oil and i even dropped the oil pan to see if there was anything in there. Im a bit anxous to attempt this in the car on my own. does this sound like a noise that could occur from this tensioner? what caused you to desire to replace it?

    • @AnthonyJ350

      Could be. Like I said in the video the car was making a knock at idle that used to go away then didn't. I would also try Castrol 5W40 synthetic in the car and replace the VVT solenoids with OEM ones. Best to change the solenoids, run the engine to test, then change the oil. ua-cam.com/video/WnUObIdmyho/v-deo.html

    What happens if something does fall into that housing? I had an incredible rattling noise and I already had a hunch that the tensioner was at fault. I was right and when I took it out, I noticed the detent pin and spring were missing. The pin that was supposed to hold those things was stuck out about 1.5" out the side of the tensioner upon removing the cover. So the detent pin and spring (that is supposed to click the cylinder) is missing. I can only assume it is in my engine but I don't know where it went. It didn't go out the intake system and it hasn't made it through my cylinders yet, so where exactly are they? I looked with a flashlight but didn't see anything. I know it was fine originally because I installed a new tensioner 5 months ago when I did the water pump. So did it make it to my oil filter? Or is it in my oil pan? I don't know what to remove to find that spring and detent pin. I got the main tensioner out with the cylinder and all that, but there's no spring and detent pin. A new one has been installed for the time being. I do not want those pieces in a place that I don't know if will cause harm

    Nice video! With these cars, have you experienced the engine fan run on "high" after 20-30 mins of driving and doesn't shut off until I put my heater on full blast
    No noticeable coolant leaks on the floor or decrease in coolant level. No over heating on the temp gauge. Water pump replaced. Slight coolant smell. And I do have a small engine valve cover leak on the left side, noticed when I did my spark plug change.

    Hey, was wondering about the crankshaft pulley part in the video. After you said how to loosen it a little to get some slack in the chain, you never said how you're supposed to tighten it back. Just curious on this part. Trying to replace this part and I'm a little stuck as I can't find any information on the pulley. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

      @AnthonyJ350  2 роки тому

      After you get the tensioner in and release the locking pin, if there still isn't enough tension turn the crank pulley the other way. You'll want to rotate it after to make sure everything is lined up.

    • @instakillers9560
      @instakillers9560 2 роки тому

      @@AnthonyJ350 Well we're basically stuck at the last part. The tensioner is in and the pin is pulled we just want to make sure that the timing chain is properly aligned so nothing goes bad and don't exactly know how to do that. We've tried researching it but there's not a lot of information surrounding it.
      We have tension I'm just confused about if there is a specific torque or technique to tightening the pulley/chain. Or if there can be too much tension also.
