6:33 Oh my gosh. Merlin Racing is a Rascal Racers port. Someone get Caddy! This cannot go unseen!
Given this one seems more advanced I think this was the original, then when the system flopped they ported sliced up bits of it to the PS1
i thought I recognised it from somewhere!!
I was wondering why it looked so familiar.
@@Exospray Apparently it's a prequel
Other way round
Awesome to finally see this video come to fruition! Been waiting ever since you mentioned you'd run into a Nuon, really cool to see a nice in-depth video on this oddity. Happy to have helped a little with getting some of the games for it!
You da man Lazy Game Reviews! :D
I managed to get one of the American consoles a while back, purely for the Jeff Minter stuff. Such a limited amount of games and way ahead of its time. Only now are they embedding console quality gaming abilities into TV's
Must... control...urge to squeal like a fangirl.
Around 2000 there were quite a few flops from various upstarts... they all had one thing in common, they were based on optical disk technology (CD/DVD) trying to break into the large consumer market... some made it, other have flopped.
At 8.47 he said Free Fall 350 AD hmmm. it should be 3050 AD ??
LGR It’s also worth noting that FreeFall 3050 AD also got a mail-order exclusive PC release in 2003 until lately.
It was recently also put on Steam as of December (2018).
I remember seeing this at Best Buy and it was pretty hidden away with the DVD players and nowhere near the traditional game consoles. There was definitely nothing trying to push it on the market as a game console.
as he said, not all nuon systems can play games
@@markusTegelane it... still could have been misplaced. & I mean where do you put it? With such a limited roster...
I had one of these, and the box it came in only had a tiny area showing it's ability to play games. After it failed, I heard that NUON systems actually sold half decent, but the manufacturers kept the profits from the hardware, and VM labs (the company behind NUON) kept the profits from game sales. So when people bought them as fancy DVD players but didn't buy games for them, Samsung and Toshiba ended up getting all the money. It would also explain why the manufacturers advertised them as DVD players with extra bells and whistles, but didn't advertise that they played games.
Whenever I hear about obscure consoles like this, I always wonder what would've happen if they had been successful.
Gaming would be different.. Like very different.. Like not cool (looks down)
Alternate universe where this hit it big and there was some shitty failed console called the Playstation
imagine if SEGA were still making consoles.
@@socialjusticewarrior2316 I kind of wonder how that would have changed the gaming world if Sega was doing that.
I have a friend who has a Nuon and all of the games and we were supposed to do an episode on it sometime last year. It still may happen. I haven't played the thing yet.
I really want to see what the two of you make of it. I didn't have the other versions of the games, would you be able to do comparison footage to show off the various ports?
*****
Maybe. That would be a good idea. I have to wait until said friend moves back out to Colorado.
***** Lmao, what games did you have for it?
aaaaw shit the sack just arrived to teabag
Do it
Man, you know something went wrong when a port of Myst wasn't even released on the thing.
If you check out Nuon-dome.com you can find out more about the library of games that never made it out. You would be surprised at what was supposed to be on the system!
“Obvious success of the Jaguar” that killed me you need a Netflix special
This was the very first Rerez video I've ever seen, back in 2014 when it came out.
This and the AVGN are what got me fascinated with gaming tech, retro games, and obscure gaming stuff.
So along with the "who's watching this in *insert year here*" cliché, also who else was motivated by this video too.
Genius!! A DVD player and video game console.........oh wait, PS2.
+salozmen29 it was released before the ps2, so you could say it was an innovative idea.
on the other hand, PS2 was more of a gaming console with a DVD player feature on it, whereas Nuon was more of a DVD player with a gaming console feature on it.
@@jasonlee7816 True but every console has shitty things about them tbh.
@@jasonlee7816 I love Xbox tho not gonna lie.
@@jasonlee7816 meh.. i liked my xbox butps2 was good too
@ Walter Flanagan name some consoles that have features you dislike
Dreamcast was a pretty good console. There were just too many competitors coming out at the time and it didn't sell.
I respectfully disagree. Sega had really lost the trust of most of the fans. Sony was rumoured of threatening several developers. The Dreamcast was a great system. In many ways it was ahead of its time. I think it would have been a bit closer if Sega had a dvd drive.
I thought the reason why not many developers jumped on Dreamcast was with the way they handled the Sega Saturn: forcing the console to come way earlier than expected and then dropping support very quickly. This pissed off some developers and made them stop working with SEGA.
It was a good console, but it didn't have many great games on it because Sega killed it too early.
Nobody is going to mention its piracy problem? Okay.
It had such a problem with that because it was using a Windows operating system on it Windows CE to be exact and that allowed the code of the games to be ripped onto a PC and onto a bootleg disc or could be downloaded and ripped onto your own
I actually owned this system all we did is play Tempest and watch DVDs on it
Damn Richard's hair cut is lit af
I got one via the post. But it was a DOA. But anyway, it's hopelessly obscure, which is more perfectly illustrated by this video than I could ever do. Well done man :)
Honestly freefalls opening cutscene was pretty impressive looking for the time. Really showed what this COULD have done, possibly. That said once you actually started trying to play it looked awful ;p
Buckaroo Bonzai is not an unwanted film. It rocks.
+eddygoombah I watched it like a month ago. And it indeed rocked.
+eddygoombah ABSOLUTELY AGREE.
+eddygoombah Great movie.
The "ocarina" outro is used almost daily on Alex Jones' show.
Out of all this I gotta say packing it with DVD players was genius.
Or the way Sony did it
tfw the only good game for your platform gives people epileptic seizures.
Epsilon yessss
nope
This is a good example of the saying "show me the money"
The Nuon failed cause it launched with a miniscule library of movies. If they wanted it to succeed, they had to go all out with a 100 movie library, not a literal handful.
Merlin Racing looks like a ripoff of Crash Team Racing
I thought exactly the same thing - even the adventure mode looks pretty much identical!!
***** exactly what I was going to say.
***** Yeah, it just won't let me reply to your comment yesterday
r4rukku Thank you, I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the game play.
Dillon Atkins have you paying ANY attention to the conversation
I actually had this thing as a little kid back in 2002, it was my only console at the time. Merlin racing was da bomb, we would do family 'mario cart' on it, by entering in a save code to unlock all the characters each time. The N64 controller on it was the best one as it had an analog stick. We ran Ballistic, tempest, Merlin racing, Freefall, Space invaders, and the homebrew Pacman until the laser started going out. We revived it for a while by fiddling with the laser adjustment pots on it, but didn't last too long (probably played too much of the burned homebrew disks on it).
If you like Tempest, Space Giraffe is quite awesome and fun to play.
why does the nuon logo look like the ebola virus?
0:53
thougth the same.
So I should probably *not* mention that there is a freeware remake of Tempest available for PC that runs at 60fps, has strikingly better visuals, and comes packed with more gameplay features, rendering the need for T3000 obsolete?
Look up Typhoon 2001.
You're so underrated Rerez. Love your vids man.
Thanks! :)
I actually had this DVD player and controller with bumpers. I wound up really enjoying the one game we had for it, Ballistic. After a few years of neglect, idk where the controller went and I'm sure my mom sold the DVD player as well. I always wondered why I never knew or heard of any more games for it.
Ah, Tempest 3000, the 1000th sequel to Tempest 2000... Wonder where TxK fits in... Ah well, the Tx series always seems to have the top title for every system it comes out on, even on a system as forgotten as this.
I remember seeing this in a magazine wayy back in the day, it stuck with me because it was the first & last time I heard of it. it was on a chart with the PS2, the yet to be released Xbox, the Dreamcast, and maybe the Gamecube? I don't remember that being there honestly, but it probably was.
Go watch Buckaroo Banzai! It's awesome!
A Shin Chan game? Holy shit I want it. I fucking loved Shin Chan back in the day.
DAMN! If they ever come out with another three stooges movie that Richard Miller guy would definitely be the perfect man to play Larry! Dead ringer for him!
Since this was made rotary controller interfaces using original Nuon joypad chips have been made. In the way the developer Jeff Minter put a rotary mode in Tempest 2000 on the Jagaur he did the same here...
I wonder if anyone is ever going to develop games for it like they did for the Dreamcast? People are STILL making games for the Dreamcast to this day and people are STILL making new games for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, so why not allow the Nuon to be a home to home brew games?
Only thing is these new games that come out for the Dreamcast are usually 2D shooters. Games that look like they would be at home on the Neo-Geo. Thats fine, but I want to see a new Dreamcast game that takes advantage of the DCs graphical power.
Pax Humana Because tens of millions of people have Dreamcast and Genesis. Who's your audience on the Nuon? Who's actually got one? Who's going to buy your game?
mattorama, you would be surprised, Doubting Thomas.
Pax Humana I'd like to know, it seems like one of those consoles that without the internet nobody would even know or care about. Heck even with the internet hardly anyone cares about it.
Classic80sStuff, this console is the equivalent of a 1960s Biscayne or Bel Air. A lot of people might not know that they even exist, but give them some work, and they can perform wonders, just like this system could make awesome video games.
Wth!!!never seen this console lol! Great video
Thanks for watching! :)
I never considered the Nuon to be a console, but rather a DVD player with extra features based on or inspired by some of the hardware originally designed for the Atari Jaguar based systems.
So basically for nice zooming options and slow motion and fastforward options beyond what most players offered and a nice built-in virtual light machine (like the Jaguar CD had).
In terms of gaming it more or less reminded me of Philips CD-i and to lesser degree of 3DO.
Funny that it had more variety in available controllers at the time than the Jaguar.
In any case the systems don't seem that easy to come by, been searching for years to add to my collection, especially European versions.
I appreciated the puns on "soul/Seoul" and "Perspective" near the end!
*Merlin Racing*
Oh my god IT'S RASCAL RACERS AGAIN! BURN IT! BURN IT! SEND IT INTO THE FIRES OF HELL!
No you fool, it was born of the Fires of Hell, sending it back will only make it stronger! We must bury it, bury it deeper than E.T. was buried and sanctify the site with the blood of 13 sacrificial lambs to seal it away for 1,476 years and 12 days, during which time its power will be weakest. Then, one of our distant descendants must take up the Holy Spindle, bless it with the holy waters of Mount Fuji and put the discs onto the spindle, thus draining the game's last remaining unholy power, after which they should crumble to dust because, crap, they're plastic discs that have been rotting in the ground for almost a millennium and a half.
Dargonhuman Or... y'know, we could just smash them to pieces.
If it worked with Bratz: Rock Angels, it should probably work for this.
Or just slaughter it. If it worked once it should probably work again.
...Wait, twice. It worked twice.
stride99 no shoot it and throw both rascal and the noun into the burning house

Give it the Kill Bill treatment like Caddicarus did in his Miracle Space Race video!

Something I noticed about Merlin Racing (I know it's Rascal Racers, but I'm talking about this specific version of the game) is that the graphics aren't the worst thing ever. They're kind of okay. Also, the animation looks quite smooth compared to the PS1 version.
Gotta love Jeff Minter. I'm sad I never got ahold of T3K while I had my Nuon N501 some years back; really, I wasn't able to try any game other than Merlin Racers and some of the homebrew titles that were released online.
I'm so high, I literally read this as "Most OBS Cure Consoles"

@10:18-.-So like, a less extreme version of what I speculated to be a major contributing factor as to why the Philips CDI failed. And this one doesn’t even have any Nintendo property to leverage.
Thanks for this! No I had never heard of this one...
a bit suprised by it. I guess I need to find one now.
Makes sense to wait a minute at that time. Back then computers were dinosaurs trying to load an explorer.
I’m pretty sure that last game could give anyone an epileptic fit
I think I had a DVD player with that nuon logo on it. I ignored it because I had no idea what it meant.
I remember hearing about this, or at least something like it, but only because I used to read Next Generation magazine
I think I remember seeing something like this in a hotel room. I wonder if anyone but that hotel chain bought these...
I'm watching this thing and having vague memories of playing some random power rangers game on a DVD Player
2020: now everyone wants to watch Buckaroo Banzai. Thanks, Ready playe one.
Tempest 2000 was ported and upgraded to Tempest X for the PS1.
Now we know why we never saw VM Labs NUON. Restrict the software, you DON’T see the hardware. That’s SO unfair! I was praying for the promised 3D graphic capabilities that were going to be VASTLY superior to what we had at that time, that AGAIN we never saw
The Dreamcast wasn't a fail!!
It was a failed system. It didn't last long and sold very poorly. Despite how we view it now years later, at the time folks didn't want it. Believe me I was one of the few kids around my neighborhood who owned one when it was new.
***** It wasn't a fail. It was a lesser succesful system. a fail is a flop
sistaledaren The Dreamcast's projected long term lifespan of several years was drastically cut short. It only stayed on store shelves for just around 2 years before being discontinued. When Sega announced the halt of production for the Dreamcast their stock went into a nose dive. Sega's President at the time donated all of his company stock (around $695 million) just to prevent Sega from going bankrupt. The consoles failure to earn or find a large audience pushed Sega out of console development all together. Around 2004 a company called Sammy purchased Sega and became 'Sega Sammy Holdings'. The Dreamcast was the catalyst that pretty much lead to the end of the company as we knew them, primarily being a console manufacturer. Like I said, despite how we have come to view it now the Dreamcast was a massive flop.
***** I read somewhere that Sega actually continued production of the Dreamcast in Japan until 2007.
There are alot of games for the Dreamcast. In the US it broke the record of console sales at the launch. But PS2 was way more popular and people didn't trust SEGA because of its previous failures.
I worked for 3DO I was a producer for the abortion plumbers dont wear ties!!! I was given a system with an odd controller that was large, two buttons and a roller ball.. Wish I still had it but hard times hit!
Uno Carb what did you think of the angry video game nerd video on it?
Tgr2k1 He tore it the new asshole it rightfully deserved lol the production on that thing was a MESS! The director wanted a certain feel, the writer wanted something else and I was half drunk or stoned throughout.. Our stellar "actors" did their half assed best as well.. in the end we trudged thru and put out the phoned in mess people know and love now..
hehe nice
would be nice to know the name of all the background sountracks you used
Found one of the controllers at a thrift shop a few days ago and thought it was a bootleg genesis controller or something. Kind of wish I picked it up now
I remember the spread in EGM about the Nuon back in the day.
I bought a 3DO the day it came out. Still one of my favorite systems in video game history.
I actually own one of these, and completed merlin racing!
You sir are a legend.
I had it too. It seems everyone here is ripping on the system and game, but I really liked Merlin Racing. And while I was disappointed with how few games came out, the NUON was a really nice DVD player, and I swear the user interface is way more intuitive than my Blu-ray player or 4K player.
Salty LP's What if I told you that Merlin Racing is called Rascal Racers on the PlayStation.
What if I told you that Merlin Racing was later split into 4 different games for the PS1 (presumably due to DVD vs CD storage capacities): XS Airboat Racing, ATV Racers, Miracle Space Race, and Rascal Racers, which combined offer the content of Merlin Racing, presumably with not as good graphics and possibly sound. Merlin Racing was developed by the same developers, Miracle Designs, as Atari Karts, which it's considered to be a spiritual successor of.

Pioneer had a 6 disc cd changer with a playstation built in. I think i seen it in a sears or fingerhut catalog.
No way, I refuse to believe this is from 7 years ago
I’m not sure if anyone caught this but the Korean system exists “Seoul-ly” to play this one game. Nice Pun!
I have seen a few of these at thrift stores over the past few years. You can sometimes find them thrown in with the regular DVD players since no one at Goodwill or wherever knows that it's also a game system. Just look for the nuon logo on the front. Nuon systems aren't well know but they also aren't all that rare either.
Never heard of this system. Interesting.
wow I passed on that controller at a thrift shop for a few bucks few weeks back
Woah. The founder of VM Labs needs a personal assistant, that's an awful headshot even for the 90s.
Should have called it the Trainwreck.

I'm actually a huge Shin-chan fan, but DAMN, I COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING AT THE KOREAN VERSION OF THE NUON!
Well, I for one think that the levels showed in the arcade mode of merlin racing..... looks eeringly similar to Super Tux Kart.... which in my opinion is a REAALLY good game
I read that one of the rezons it fialed was that moist if it's 8 games were only like 500MB.
FreeFall 3050 A.D and Iron Soldier 3 are the only DVD-ROM based nuon based games.; and at 518MB Merlin Racing didn't have to be cut into 4 games for it's PlayStation re release. FreeFall 3050 A.D and Iron Soldier 3 wound have to have been cut up fur 2 more CDs.
Imagine going to your friends house in the 90s and see that he has a nuon
Well that would have never happened. The Nuon released in 2000.
Hmm looks like Myst was going to come out for it. It's a neat idea, too bad it did not work. UPDATE: Looking at that controller I think one at a local thrift store once, I did not know what it was but it did not have a norma interface so I did not get it.
Oh my. Such a shame wase of... everything! Thanks for that video. The next time I'll think that my daywork is a flaw, I'll recall Nuon
Hm, the buttons on the included controller sure does look like the ones on the Microsoft sidewinder game pad
@ 6:30 ..... IT'S FUCKING RASCAL RACERS
Are they completely identical? Same adventure mode, single player and no saving though?
That makes Rascal Racers a butchered port of Merlin Racing. (RR was released after MR) without the dkr-esque overworld and other features it seems.
Alex Angulo It maybe, but...

That was a thing for western-made consoles in the 90s. The Philips CD-i, Panasonic 3DO, and this; as if they didn't want their consoles to look like toys, but like media-center elements.
